In this paper we derive Lat. pirum ‘pear’ from the PIE root *peys- ‘to crush, crumble’ (attested also in Lat. pīnsō ‘crush, pound’ and pistillum ‘pestle’). The semantic motivation lies in the ...delicate, crumbling texture of pears, and it has an exact parallel in Slavic, where, e.g., Croatian krƘška is derived from the same root as kršiti ‘crush’. The development of PIE *pisom > Lat. pirum is regular, since the development of *i to *e before *r was limited to the word-medial position (and the vowel e in serō ‘sow’ is analogical to the regular reflex found in compound verbs such as re-serō ‘to replant’, con-serō ‘to strew thickly’, etc.). Moreover, Gr. ápion ‘pear’ can then be easily derived from *ha-pihon < *sm-pisom, from the same PIE root *peys-.
U radu se iznosi teza da je hrvatska riječ patúljak stara posuđenica iz vulgarnolatinskoga ili ranoga dalmatoromanskoga, te da joj je izvor lat. puttilus „malen, neznatan”, ili puttus „dječak”.
“Latin presents in -t- and the etymologies of necto ‘to weave, bind’ and flecto ‘to bend, curve’” This paper discusses the origin of the Latin verbs formed with the suffix -t- in the present stem, as ...well as the etymologies of those verbs. It is argued that PIE did not have the present-stem forming suffix *-t-. Rather, this suffix developed in some western Indo-European dialects, including Italic, in the verb *pek’-t- ‘to comb’, presumably on analogy with the noun *pek’tēn ‘comb’, and it spread analogically to the verb *plek’-t- ‘to braid, plait’, which had a similar meaning and form. In Latin, this present-stem forming suffix was further extended to necto ‘to weave, bind’ and flecto ‘to bend, curve’. The former verb is probably derived from the PIE root *neg’h- ‘to penetrate’ (> ‘to intertwine’), and the latter is from the PIE root *gwhleg’h- ‘to bend’.
Ime otoka Iža do sada nije bilo etimološki uvjerljivo protumačeno. Značenjske su usporednice posvjedočene u grčkoj nesonimiji (npr. otok Polýaigos u Kikladima pored Mila i Kimola, čije ime znači 's mnogo koza'), dok među hrvatskim nesonimima sličnu motivaciju nalazimo u imenu Kozjak (nenaseljeni otočić u Ilovičkim vratima) i drugdje.
The articles in this volume present original research on the encoding of meaning in a variety of constructions and languages. Many of the contributions take the framework of Role and Reference ...Grammar as a point of reference, either by applying it to the analysis of linguistic data or by discussing, extending, and challenging some of its assumptions. The topics of the articles range from general questions concerning the relation of meaning and its syntactic realization to the study of specific grammatical phenomena in a number of typologically diverse languages, including Yucatec Maya, Kabardian, Tagalog, Murik-Kopar, Avatime, Whitesands, Tundra Yukaghir, and various Indo-European languages. The articles will be of interest to researchers and advanced students working on the interface between syntax, semantics and pragmatics.
In this paper we derive Lat. umbra ‘shadow, shade’ from PIE *undhreh2, the zero-grade of the root *(s)wendh- ‘fade, wither’ (PSl. *ǫditi ‘smoke’, PSl. *vędnǫti ‘wither, fade’, PGerm. *swend-a- ‘fade, ...wither’). Lith. ùnksna ‘shade’ is also regularly derivable from this root (from PIE *undh-sn- with the common epenthesis of *-k- before *s), and Skt. vandhyā- ‘barren, sterile woman’ is probably from *wendhyeh2 with the change of meaning from ‘withered’ to ‘barren, sterile’.
