Time-reversal breaking and parity-conserving millistrong interactions, suggested in 1965, still remain a viable mechanism of CP-violation beyond the Standard Model. One of its possible manifestations ...is the T-odd asymmetry in the transmission of tensor-polarized deuterons through a vector-polarized hydrogen gas target. Upon the rotation of the deuteron polarization from the vertical direction into the ring plane, the T-odd asymmetries, odd against the reversal of the proton polarization in the target, will continuously oscillate with first or second harmonics of the spin precession frequency. The Fourier analysis of the oscillating T-odd asymmetries allows for an easy separation from background persistent in conventional experiments employing static vector and tensor polarizations.
Precision experiments, such as the search for a deuteron electric dipole moment using storage rings like COSY, demand for an understanding of the spin dynamics with unprecedented accuracy. In such an ...enterprise, numerical predictions play a crucial role for the development and later application of spin-tracking algorithms. Various measurement concepts involving polarization effects induced by an rf Wien filter and static solenoids in COSY are discussed. The matrix formalism, applied here, deals solely with spin rotations on the closed orbit of the machine, and is intended to provide numerical guidance for the development of beam and spin-tracking codes for rings that employ realistic descriptions of the electric and magnetic bending and focusing elements, solenoids, etc., and a realistically modeled rf Wien filter.
The study of the approach to the quantum ground state and the possibility to detect displacements of macroscopic bodies close to the quantum limit represent pressing challenges in modern physics. In ...the recent experiment of the JEDI Collaboration at the COSY storage ring, the coherent oscillations of a deuteron beam were detected with an amplitude of only one order of magnitude above the limit of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle of about 40 nm for the one-particle betatron motion. On the other hand, the much discussed search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with an ultimate sensitivity of10−29ecmrequires control of the position of the beam center of gravity with an accuracy of≈5pm. In this paper, we develop the full quantum mechanical treatment of the coherent beam oscillations with ultrasmall amplitudes. In agreement with the Ehrenfest theorem, we find a continuity of the description of the coherent betatron motion from the large classical amplitudes down to the deep quantum region below the one-particle Heisenberg limit. We argue that quantum mechanics does not preclude control of the beam center with subpicometer accuracy.
The waveguide RF Wien filter is one of the key components of the JEDI project at the COoler SYnchrotron in Jülich. The driving circuit constitutes a fundamental part of the waveguide RF Wien filter. ...When running at the spin precession frequency, the driving circuit must ensure that the load impedance is set to the correct complex value so that the electric and magnetic fields are matched, leading to a vanishing Lorentz force during operation at high power levels up to 10 kW. This paper discusses the design, simulation, realization and performance analysis of the RF Wien filter driving circuit.
Precision experiments, such as the search for electric dipole moments of charged particles using radio-frequency spin rotators in storage rings, demand for maintaining the exact spin resonance ...condition for several thousand seconds. Synchrotron oscillations in the stored beam modulate the spin tune of off-central particles, moving it off the perfect resonance condition set for central particles on the reference orbit. Here, we report an analytic description of how synchrotron oscillations lead to non-exponential decoherence of the radio-frequency resonance driven up–down spin rotations. This non-exponential decoherence is shown to be accompanied by a nontrivial walk of the spin phase. We also comment on sensitivity of the decoherence rate to the harmonics of the radio-frequency spin rotator and a possibility to check predictions of decoherence-free magic energies.
An implementation of the polynomial chaos expansion is introduced as a fast solver of the equations of beam and spin motion of charged particles in electromagnetic fields. We show that, based on the ...stochastic Galerkin method, our computational framework substantially reduces the required number of tracking calculations compared to the widely used Monte Carlo method.
The proton analysing power in p→p elastic scattering has been measured at small angles at COSY-ANKE at 796 MeV and five other beam energies between 1.6 and 2.4 GeV using a polarised proton beam. The ...asymmetries obtained by detecting the fast proton in the ANKE forward detector or the slow recoil proton in a silicon tracking telescope are completely consistent. Although the analysing power results agree well with the many published data at 796 MeV, and also with the most recent partial wave solution at this energy, the ANKE data at the higher energies lie well above the predictions of this solution at small angles. An updated phase shift analysis that uses the ANKE results together with the World data leads to a much better description of these new measurements.
This paper describes a time-marking system that enables a measurement of the in-plane (horizontal) polarization of a 0.97−GeV/c deuteron beam circulating in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the ...Forschungszentrum Jülich. The clock time of each polarimeter event is used to unfold the 120-kHz spin precession and assign events to bins according to the direction of the horizontal polarization. After accumulation for one or more seconds, the down-up scattering asymmetry can be calculated for each direction and matched to a sinusoidal function whose magnitude is proportional to the horizontal polarization. This requires prior knowledge of the spin tune or polarization precession rate. An initial estimate is refined by resorting the events as the spin tune is adjusted across a narrow range and searching for the maximum polarization magnitude. The result is biased toward polarization values that are too large, in part because of statistical fluctuations but also because sinusoidal fits to even random data will produce sizable magnitudes when the phase is left free to vary. An analysis procedure is described that matches the time dependence of the horizontal polarization to templates based on emittance-driven polarization loss while correcting for the positive bias. This information will be used to study ways to extend the horizontal polarization lifetime by correcting spin tune spread using ring sextupole fields and thereby to support the feasibility of searching for an intrinsic electric dipole moment using polarized beams in a storage ring. This paper is a combined effort of the Storage Ring EDM collaboration and the JEDI collaboration.
The analyzing powers in proton-deuteron elastic and proton-neutron quasi-elastic scattering have been measured at small angles using a polarized proton beam at the COSY storage ring incident on an ...unpolarized deuterium target. The data were taken at 796MeV and five higher energies from 1600MeV to 2400MeV. The analyzing power in pd elastic scattering was studied by detecting the low energy recoil deuteron in telescopes placed symmetrically in the COSY plane to the left and right of the beam whereas for pn quasi-elastic scattering a low energy proton was registered in one of the telescopes in coincidence with a fast scattered proton measured in the ANKE magnetic spectrometer. Though the experiment explores new domains, the results are consistent with the limited published information.
