Recently, zinc and its alloys have been proposed as promising candidates for biodegradable metals (BMs), owning to their preferable corrosion behavior and acceptable biocompatibility in ...cardiovascular, bone and gastrointestinal environments, together with Mg-based and Fe-based BMs. However, there is the desire for surface treatment for Zn-based BMs to better control their biodegradation behavior. Firstly, the implantation of some Zn-based BMs in cardiovascular environment exhibited intimal activation with mild inflammation. Secondly, for orthopedic applications, the biodegradation rates of Zn-based BMs are relatively slow, resulting in a long-term retention after fulfilling their mission. Meanwhile, excessive Zn2+ release during degradation will cause in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo delayed osseointegration. In this review, we firstly summarized the current surface modification methods of Zn-based alloys for the industrial applications. Then we comprehensively summarized the recent progress of biomedical bulk Zn-based BMs as well as the corresponding surface modification strategies. Last but not least, the future perspectives towards the design of surface bio-functionalized coatings on Zn-based BMs for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications were also briefly proposed.

Materials based on Mg2+-containing phosphates are gaining great relevance in the field of bone tissue repair via regenerative medicine methods. Magnesium ions, together with condensed phosphate ions, ...play substantial roles in the process of bone remodeling, affecting the early stage of bone regeneration through active participation in the process of osteosynthesis. In this paper we provide a comprehensive overview of the usage of biomaterials based on magnesium phosphate and magnesium calcium phosphate in bone reconstruction. We consider the role of magnesium ions in angiogenesis, which is an important process associated with osteogenesis. Finally, we summarize the biological properties of calcium magnesium phosphates for regeneration of bone.
Thanks to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, injectability and self-setting properties, calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) have been the most economical and effective biomaterials of choice for ...use as bone void fillers. They have also been extensively used as drug delivery carriers owing to their ability to provide for a steady release of various organic molecules aiding the regeneration of defective bone, including primarily antibiotics and growth factors. This review provides a systematic compilation of studies that reported on the controlled release of drugs from CPCs in the last 25 years. The chemical, compositional and microstructural characteristics of these systems through which the control of the release rates and mechanisms could be achieved have been discussed. In doing so, the effects of (i) the chemistry of the matrix, (ii) porosity, (iii) additives, (iv) drug types, (v) drug concentrations, (vi) drug loading methods and (vii) release media have been distinguished and discussed individually. Kinetic specificities of in vivo release of drugs from CPCs have been reviewed, too. Understanding the kinetic and mechanistic correlations between the CPC properties and the drug release is a prerequisite for the design of bone void fillers with drug release profiles precisely tailored to the application area and the clinical picture. The goal of this review has been to shed light on these fundamental correlations.

Zinc based biodegradable metals (BMs) show great potential to be used in various biomedical applications, owing to their superior biodegradability and biocompatibility. Some high-strength (ultimate ...tensile strength > 600 MPa) Zn based BMs have already been developed through alloying and plastic working, making their use in load-bearing environments becomes a reality. However, different from Mg and Fe based BMs, Zn based BMs exhibit significant “strain-softening” effect that leads to limited uniform deformation. Non-uniform deformation is detrimental to Zn based devices or implants, which will possibly lead to unexpected failure. People might be misled by the considerable fracture elongation of Zn based BMs. Thus, it is important to specify uniform elongation as a term of mechanical requirements for Zn based BMs. In this review, recent advances on the mechanical properties of Zn based BMs have been comprehensively summarized, especially focusing on the strain softening phenomenon. At first, the origin and evaluation criteria of strain softening were introduced. Secondly, the effects of alloying elements (including element type, single or multiple addition, and alloying content) and microstructural characteristics (grain size, constituent phase, phase distribution, etc.) on mechanical properties (especially for uniform elongation) of Zn based BMs were summarized. Finally, how to get a good balance between strength and uniform elongation was generally discussed based on the service environment. In addition, possible ways to minimize or eliminate the strain softening effect were also proposed, such as controlling of twins, solute clusters, and grain boundary characteristics. All these items above would be helpful to understand the mechanical instability of Zn based BMs, and to make the full usage of them in the future medical device design.
Biodegradable metals (BMs) is a hotspot in the field of metallic biomaterials. Fracture elongation is normally adopted to quantify the deformability of Mg and Fe based BMs owing to their negligible necking strain, yet the strain softening would occur in Zn based BMs, which is extremely detrimental to performance of their medical device. In this review paper, a better understanding the mechanical performance of Zn-based BMs with the term “uniform elongation” instead of “fracture elongation” was depicted, and possible ways to minimize or eliminate the strain softening effect were also proposed, such as twins, solute clusters, self-stable dislocation network, and grain boundary characteristics. It would be helpful to understand the mechanical instability of Zn based BMs and making full usage of it in the future medical device design.

High-spin defects (color centers) in wide-gap semiconductors are considered as a basis for the implementation of quantum technologies due to the unique combination of their spin, optical, charge, and ...coherent properties. A silicon carbide (SiC) crystal can act as a matrix for a wide variety of optically active vacancy-type defects, which manifest themselves as single-photon sources or spin qubits. Among the defects, the nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV) are of particular importance. This paper is devoted to the application of the photoinduced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron–nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) techniques at a high-frequency range (94 GHz) to obtain unique information about the nature and properties of NV defects in SiC crystal of the hexagonal 4H and 6H polytypes. Selective excitation by microwave and radio frequency pulses makes it possible to determine the microscopic structure of the color center, the zero-field splitting constant (D = 1.2–1.3 GHz), the phase coherence time (T2), and the values of hyperfine (≈1.1 MHz) and quadrupole (Cq ≈ 2.45 MHz) interactions and to define the isotropic (a = −1.2 MHz) and anisotropic (b = 10–20 kHz) contributions of the electron–nuclear interaction. The obtained data are essential for the implementation of the NV defects in SiC as quantum registers, enabling the optical initialization of the electron spin to establish spin–photon interfaces. Moreover, the combination of optical, microwave, and radio frequency resonant effects on spin centers within a SiC crystal shows the potential for employing pulse EPR and ENDOR sequences to implement protocols for quantum computing algorithms and gates.

Titanium and its alloys are the most used biomaterials for orthopedic and dental applications. However, up to 10% of these medical devices still fail, mostly due to implant loosening and suboptimal integration at the implant site. The biomaterial surface plays a critical role in promoting osseointegration, which can reduce the risk of device failure. In this study, we propose a novel surface modification on titanium to improve osteogenic differentiation by depositing manganese-containing bioactive glass (BG) on TiO2 nanotube arrays. The surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, contact angle goniometry, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cell toxicity, viability, adhesion, and proliferation of adipose-derived stem cells on the surfaces were investigated up to 7 days. To evaluate the osteogenic properties of the surfaces, alkaline phosphatase activity, total protein, osteocalcin expression, and calcium deposition were quantified up to 28 days. The results indicate that TiO2 nanotube arrays modified with BG promote cell growth and induce increased osteocalcin and calcium contents when compared to unmodified TiO2 nanotube arrays. The deposition of manganese-containing bioactive glass onto TiO2 nanotubes demonstrates the ability to enhance osteogenic activity on titanium, showing great potential for use in orthopedic and dental implants.
Sr2+-substituted β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) powders were synthesized using the mechano-chemical activation method with subsequent pressing and sintering to obtain ceramics. The concentration of ...Sr2+ in the samples was 0 (non-substituted TCP, as a reference), 3.33 (0.1SrTCP), and 16.67 (0.5SrTCP) mol.% with the expected Ca3(PO4)2, Ca2.9Sr0.1(PO4)2, and Ca2.5Sr0.5(PO4)2 formulas, respectively. The chemical compositions were confirmed by the energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) methods. The study of the phase composition of the synthesized powders and ceramics by the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) method revealed that β-TCP is the main phase in all compounds except 0.1SrTCP, in which the apatite (Ap)-type phase was predominant. TCP and 0.5SrTCP ceramics were soaked in the standard saline solution for 21 days, and the phase analysis revealed the partial dissolution of the initial β-TCP phase with the formation of the Ap-type phase and changes in the microstructure of the ceramics. The Sr2+ ion release from the ceramic was measured by the ICP-OES. The human osteosarcoma MG-63 cell line was used for viability, adhesion, spreading, and cytocompatibility studies. The results show that the introduction of Sr2+ ions into the β-TCP improved cell adhesion, proliferation, and cytocompatibility of the prepared samples. The obtained results provide a base for the application of the Sr2+-substituted ceramics in model experiments in vivo.
Magnesium alloys as bioresorbable materials with good biocompatibility have raised a growing interest in the past years in temporary implant manufacturing, as they offer a steady resorption rate and ...optimal healing in the body. Magnesium exhibits tensile strength properties similar to those of natural bone, which determines its application in load-bearing mechanical medical devices. In this paper, we investigated the biodegradation rate of Mg-Zn-Mn biodegradable alloys (ZMX410 and ZM21) before and after coating them with hydroxyapatite (HAP) via the electrophoretic deposition method. The experimental samples were subjected to corrosion tests to observe the effect of HAP deposition on corrosion resistance and, implicitly, the rate of biodegradation of these in simulated environments. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) provided detailed information on the quality, structure, and morphology of the HAP coating. The obtained results demonstrate that coating of Mg-Zn-Mn alloys by HAP led to the improvement of corrosion resistance in simulated environments, and that the HAP coating could be used in order to control the biodegradation rate.

) bone cement. Temperature profiles were first evaluated for 3D hybrid devices (PCL/PMMA, PLA/PMMA, PCL/PMMA/Cu-TCP and PLA/PMMA/Cu-TCP). Peak temperatures recorded for hybrid PCL/PMMA and PCL/PMMA/Cu-TCP were significantly lower than those found for the PLA-based ones. Virtual and physical models of customized devices for large cranial defect were developed to assess the feasibility of the proposed technical solutions. A theoretical analysis was preliminarily performed on the entire head model trying to simulate severe impact conditions for people with the customized hybrid device (PCL/PMMA/Cu-TCP) (i.e., a rigid sphere impacting the implant region of the head). Results from finite element analysis (FEA) provided information on the different components of the model.
