Chern insulators are band insulators exhibiting a nonzero Hall conductance but preserving the lattice translational symmetry. We conclusively show that a partially filled Chern insulator at 1/3 ...filling exhibits a fractional quantum Hall effect and rule out charge-density-wave states that have not been ruled out by previous studies. By diagonalizing the Hubbard interaction in the flat-band limit of these insulators, we show the following: The system is incompressible and has a 3-fold degenerate ground state whose momenta can be computed by postulating an generalized Pauli principle with no more than 1 particle in 3 consecutive orbitals. The ground-state density is constant, and equal to 1/3 in momentum space. Excitations of the system are fractional-statistics particles whose total counting matches that of quasiholes in the Laughlin state based on the same generalized Pauli principle. The entanglement spectrum of the state has a clear entanglement gap which seems to remain finite in the thermodynamic limit. The levels below the gap exhibit counting identical to that of Laughlin 1/3 quasiholes. Both the 3 ground states and excited states exhibit spectral flow upon flux insertion. All the properties above disappear in the trivial state of the insulator—both the many-body energy gap and the entanglement gap close at the phase transition when the single-particle Hamiltonian goes from topologically nontrivial to topologically trivial. These facts clearly show that fractional many-body states are possible in topological insulators.
Introduction Le diabète pré-existant la grossesse et le diabète gestationnel ont été associés à un risque plus élevé d’obésité de l’enfant, pourtant des études récentes n’ont pas retrouvé cette ...association dans les 2 premières années de vie. Notre objectif était d’identifier systématiquement la littérature ayant examiné la relation entre exposition au diabète (type 1, 2 et gestationnel) et développement ultérieur de l’adiposité chez le descendant et de réaliser une méta-analyse après stratification sur différentes périodes, de la naissance à l’âge adulte. Matériels et méthodes Nous avons identifié 4 255 résumés dans Pubmed et 2 410 dans Embase rapportant des paramètres d’adiposité (IMC, poids et autres mesures) chez des enfants exposés ou non (contrôles) au diabète maternel pendant la grossesse dans des études observationnelles. Parmi eux, 87 études étaient éligibles et 50 finalement incluses dans la méta-analyse. La qualité des études a été évaluée grâce à l’échelle Newcastle Ottawa. Des différences de moyennes standardisées (DMS) ont été obtenues en utilisant Revman. Résultats À la naissance, la DMS IC95 % combinée pour l’ensemble des études incluses était de 0,21 0,10 ; 0,31 indiquant un poids de naissance plus élevé chez les nouveau-nés de mères diabétiques. Dans la période postpartum-18 mois, il n’y avait pas de différence significative entre les exposés et non exposés (0,10 − 0,11 ; 0,31). Dans la période 19 mois-5 ans, la DMS n’était pas différente pour l’IMC de l’enfant (0,07 − 0,01 ; 0,15) mais indiquait un poids significativement plus élevé chez les enfants de mère diabétique (0,23 0,16 ; 0,31). Finalement, les enfants exposés présentaient un IMC et un poids plus élevés dans les périodes 6–10 ans et ≥ 11 ans (pour l’IMC : 0,33 0,19 ; 0,48 et 0,40 0,33 ; 0,48 respectivement pour chaque période). Discussion L’association du diabète maternel avec l’adiposité chez le descendant ne semble plus être visible dans les mois suivant la naissance et jusqu’à 18 mois mais réapparaitrait plus tard dans l’enfance. De futures études sont nécessaires pour comprendre ce qui déclenche la réapparition de cette relation.
We present evidence that spots imaged using astronomical CCDs do not exactly scale with flux: bright spots tend to be broader than faint ones, using the same illumination pattern. We measure that the ...linear size of spots or stars, of typical size 3 to 4 pixels FWHM, increase linearly with their flux by up to 2 % over the full CCD dynamic range. This brighter-fatter effect affects both deep-depleted and thinned CCD sensors. We propose that this effect is a direct consequence of the distortions of the drift electric field sourced by charges accumulated within the CCD during the exposure and experienced by forthcoming light-induced charges in the same exposure. The pixel boundaries then become slightly dynamical: overfilled pixels become increasingly smaller than their neighbors, so that bright star sizes, measured in number of pixels, appear larger than those of faint stars. This interpretation of the brighter-fatter effect implies that pixels in flat-fields should exhibit statistical correlations, sourced by Poisson fluctuations, that we indeed directly detect. We propose to use the measured correlations in flat-fields to derive how pixel boundaries shift under the influence of a given charge pattern, which allows us in turn to predict how star shapes evolve with flux. We show that, within the precision of our tests, we are able to quantitatively relate the correlations of flat-field pixels and the broadening of stars with flux. This physical model of the brighter-fatter effect also explains the commonly observed phenomenon that the spatial variance of CCD flat-fields increases less rapidly than their average.
We introduce a Bloch-like basis in a C-component lowest Landau level fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect, which entangles the real and internal degrees of freedom and preserves an N(x)×N(y) full ...lattice translational symmetry. We implement the Haldane pseudopotential Hamiltonians in this new basis. Their ground states are the model FQH wave functions, and our Bloch basis allows for a mutatis mutandis transcription of these model wave functions to the fractional Chern insulator of arbitrary Chern number C, obtaining wave functions different from all previous proposals. For C>1, our wave functions are related to color-dependent magnetic-flux inserted versions of Halperin and non-Abelian color-singlet states. We then provide large-size numerical results for both the C = 1 and C = 3 cases. This new approach leads to improved overlaps compared to previous proposals. We also discuss the adiabatic continuation from the fractional Chern insulator to the FQH in our Bloch basis, both from the energy and the entanglement spectrum perspectives.
Objectif Décrire l’évolution de la prévalence du diabète traité pharmacologique-ment, à partir des données de l’Assurance maladie, en France, entre 2006 et 2013. Patients et méthodes Les personnes ...diabétiques traitées, tous régimes d’Assurance maladie confondus, ont été identifiées dans le Système national d’information inter-régimes de l’Assurance maladie (Sniiram), par la délivrance d’antidiabétiques oraux ou d’insuline à au moins trois dates différentes au cours de chaque année d’étude (deux si au moins un grand conditionnement est délivré). Le taux de croissance annuel moyen (TCAM) global a été étudié sur la période 2006-2013 et décliné sur la période 2010-2013 en fonction du sexe, de l’âge, de la région, de la cmU-C et du niveau de désavantage social de la commune de résidence. Résultats La prévalence du diabète traité pharmacologiquement en France est estimée à 4,7 % en 2013, tous régimes d’Assurance maladie confondus, soit plus de 3 millions de personnes. En 2006, cette prévalence était inférieure à 4 %. L’augmentation de la prévalence du diabète observée depuis 2006 enregistre un ralentissement: le TCAM était de 5,1 % sur la période 2006-2009, et de 2,4 % sur la période 2009-2013. Les évolutions temporelles seront détaillées par sous-populations démographiques (sexe, classe d’âge, région, niveau socio-économique) afin d’identifier si les progressions au sein de certaines sous-populations sont différentes de la progression globale. Conclusion La prévalence du diabète ne cesse d’augmenter. Toutefois, cette progression enregistre un ralentissement depuis 2009. L’analyse des évolutions temporelles par sous-populations pourra permettre de mieux cibler les populations dans lesquelles des actions de prévention des risques modifiables (surpoids et obésité, sédentarité) devront être mises en place. Objectif (1) Estimer la fréquence de dépistage du diabète gestationnel (DG) et sa prévalence en France en 2011, (2) Étudier les associations entre caractéristiques socio-démographiques maternelles et ...dépistage, diagnostic et pronostic de DG (ie. naissance d'un enfant de poids élevé-pour-son-âge-gestationnel (LGA)). Matériels et Méthodes Pour 17 348 couples mère-enfant de l'étude ELFE, des sages-femmes ont recherché un diagnostic de DG dans le dossier obstétrical et interrogé les mères pour déterminer si elles avaient bénéficié d'un dépistage. Des données socio-démographiques, la parité, la consommation d'alcool et tabac, le poids de naissance et l'âge gestationnel ont été collectés. Les analyses multivariées visant à expliquer le dépistage, le diagnostic ou le pronostic de DG étaient ajustées sur ces facteurs (et l'IMC avant grossesse pour le dépistage), et pondérées suivant le plan de sondage complexe. Résultats 79,9 % IC 95 % : 78,4-81,4 des mères déclaraient avoir bénéficié d'un dépistage. La prévalence du DG était de 7,0 % 6,4-7,5 en population générale et de 8,9 % 8,1-9,6 chez les femmes dépistées. La proportion de LGA était de 9,0 % 7,6 ; 10,3 chez les non dépistées, 11,4 % 10,7 ; 12,2 chez les dépistées négatives (DG-) et 18,8 % 15,8 ; 21,7 chez les DG+, P < 0,0001. En multivarié, l'âge et l'IMC étaient associés au dépistage du DG comme attendu. Un moindre dépistage était retrouvé chez les femmes au niveau d'études le moins ou le plus élevé (OR ajusté = 0,75 0,53-1,05 pour les femmes avec un niveau ≤ collège et ORa = 0,76 ; 0,66-0,86 pour > bac + 2 vs lycée à bac + 2), et chez les sans profession (0,69 0,50-0,95 vs professions intellectuelles). Après ajustement, les ouvrières présentaient un risque augmenté de DG (ORa = 1,96 1,30-2,98 vs professions intellectuelles). Par rapport aux DG-, les DG+ avaient un risque augmenté de LGA (ORa = 1,74 ; 1,37-2,21) et les non dépistées un risque diminué (ORa = 0,73 0,59-0,90). Conclusions En 2011, la prévalence du DG était de 7 % et son taux de dépistage, relativement élevé, 79,9 %, variait selon le niveau d'études et la profession de la mère. Le moindre risque de LGA chez les non dépistées pourrait dénoter la pertinence des critères de dépistage utilisés en pratique.
We numerically explore the many body localization (MBL) transition through the lens of the entanglement spectrum. While a direct transition from localization to thermalization is believed to be ...obtained in the thermodynamic limit (the exact details of which remain an open problem), in finite system sizes there exists an intermediate 'quantum critical' regime. Previous numerical investigations have explored the crossover from thermalization to criticality, and have used this to place a numerical lower bound on the critical disorder strength for MBL. A careful analysis of the high energy part of the entanglement spectrum (which contains universal information about the critical point) allows us to study the crossover from criticality to MBL, and we find evidence for such a crossover which could allow us to place a numerical upper bound on the critical disorder strength for MBL.
Interfaces between topologically distinct phases of matter reveal a remarkably rich phenomenology. To go beyond effective field theories, we study the prototypical example of such an interface ...between two Abelian states, namely the Laughlin and Halperin states. Using matrix product states, we propose a family of model wavefunctions for the whole system including both bulks and the interface. We show through extensive numerical studies that it unveils both the universal properties of the system, such as the central charge of the gapless interface mode and its microscopic features. It also captures the low energy physics of experimentally relevant Hamiltonians. Our approach can be generalized to other phases described by tensor networks.
Interfaces between topologically distinct phases of matter reveal a remarkably rich phenomenology. We study the experimentally relevant interface between a Laughlin phase at filling factor ν = 1/3 ...and a Halperin 332 phase at filling factor ν = 2/5. Based on our recent construction of chiral topological interfaces (Nat. Commun. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-09168-z ; 2019), we study a family of model wavefunctions that captures both the bulk and interface properties. These model wavefunctions are built within the matrix product state framework. The validity of our approach is substantiated through extensive comparisons with exact diagonalization studies. We probe previously unreachable features of the low energy physics of the transition. We provide, amongst other things, the characterization of the interface gapless mode and the identification of the spin and charge excitations in the many-body spectrum. The methods and tools presented are applicable to a broad range of topological interfaces.
