Lycorane is a pentacyclic core presented in alkaloids isolated from the Amaryllidaceae family of herbaceous flowering plants. Members of this class of natural products have shown to display important ...biological properties including analgesic, antiviral, and antiproliferative activities. This review presents the known synthetic routes toward α‐, β‐, γ‐, and δ‐lycoranes. α‐(19 routes), β‐(10 routes), γ‐(38 routes), and δ‐(6 routes).
This study documents the presence of anti–Neospora caninum antibodies and their association with certain risk factors in 2 deer species from the central region of Veracruz State, Mexico. A total of ...90 blood samples, 20 from temazate deer (Mazama temama) and 70 from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), were taken from 3 farms, and serum samples were subjected to ELISA indirect test to detect N. caninum antibodies; the association between the serological status and the possible risk factors was then estimated. The overall presence of anti–N. caninum antibodies was 57.7% (52/90; 95% CI 46.9–67.9), with positive animals identified on all farms; in white-tailed deer it was 57% and in temazate deer 60%. Prevalence was higher in females than males. Adult animals had a higher prevalence than young ones. The risk analysis identified the age in the adult animal category (odds ratio 5.8) as being associated with the presence of anti–N. caninum antibodies. These results provide evidence of the significant contamination of oocysts in the environment and allow us to estimate the contribution of deer to the sylvatic cycle.
Linear Sebaceous Nevus Syndrome is a rare disorder that presents with nevus sebaceus in association with corneal dermoids, colobomas, choroidal osteomas, and arachnoid cysts. It is thought to ...represent a mosaic RASopathy. These are disorders characterized by postzygotic somatic mutation in genes involved in RAS/MAPK signaling pathway. In this report we describe two patients with linear sebaceous nevus syndrome found to have mutations in codon 146 of KRAS with evidence of mosaicism. This specific mutation has previously been reported in Oculoectodermal Syndrome and Encephalocraniocutaneous Lipomatosis, two other mosaic RASopathies with predominantly cerebrooculocutaneous manifestations. These findings suggest that, while initially classified as different syndromes, these disorders should be evaluated and managed as a spectrum of related disorders.
Educational technology has become an increasingly important element for improving the teaching and learning process of students. To achieve these goals, it is essential that teachers have the skills ...they need to be able to introduce technology into their teaching practice. However, this is often overwhelming and stressful for many of them. The aim of this review was to find out how research on teacher stress and anxiety associated with the use of educational technology was proceeding. A systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines through the following bibliographic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Sixteen articles were found from the review. The main findings show that teachers present high levels of anxiety or stress due to their use of educational technology in the classroom. Among the conclusions, the need for research on different strategies to prevent the emergence of these anxiety and stress symptoms in teachers stands out.
Ovarian immature teratoma is a rare subtype of germ cell tumour that can be pure or associated with non-teratomatous germ cell tumour elements and is graded based on extent of the immature ...neuroectodermal component. Immature teratoma (IT) can also be associated with somatic differentiation in the form of sarcoma, carcinoma, or extensive immature neuroectodermal elements and may produce low levels of serum alpha-fetoprotein. Variable interpretation of these issues underlies diagnostic and management dilemmas, resulting in substantial practice differences between paediatric and adult women with IT. The Malignant Germ Cell International Consortium (MaGIC) convened oncologists, surgeons, and pathologists to address the following crucial clinicopathologic issues related to IT: (1) grading of IT, (2) definition and significance of ‘microscopic’ yolk sac tumour, (3) transformation to a somatic malignancy, and (4) interpretation of serum tumour biomarkers. This review highlights the discussion, conclusions, and suggested next steps from this clinicopathologic conference.

A family of giant KASH proteins, including C. elegans ANC-1 and mammalian Nesprin-1 and -2, are involved in organelle anchoring and are associated with multiple neurodevelopmental disorders including ...autism, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. However, little is known about how these proteins function in neurons. Moreover, the role of organelle anchoring in axon development is poorly understood. Here, we report that ANC-1 functions with the SLT-1 extracellular guidance cue to polarize ALM axon growth. This role for ANC-1 is specific to its longer ANC-1A and ANC-1C isoforms, suggesting that it is mechanistically distinct from previously described roles for ANC-1. We find that ANC-1 is required for the localization of a cluster of mitochondria to the base of the proximal axon. Furthermore, genetic and pharmacological studies indicate that ANC-1 functions with mitochondria to promote polarization of ALM axon growth. These observations reveal a mechanism whereby ANC-1 functions through mitochondria to polarize axon growth in response to SLT-1.

This paper investigates and compares several highly efficient thermodynamic cycles that are suitable for coupling with particle-in-tube fluidized-bed solar receiver technology. In such a receiver, ...high-temperature particles are used as both a heat transfer fluid and a storage medium. A dense particle suspension (DPS) is created through an upward bubbling fluidized-bed (UBFB) flow inside the receiver tubes, which constitutes the “particle-in-tube” solar receiver concept. Reaching higher temperatures is seen as a key factor for future cost reductions in the solar plant, as this leads to both higher power conversion efficiency and increased energy storage density. Three advanced thermodynamic cycles are analyzed in this work: the supercritical steam Rankine cycle (s-steam), supercritical carbon dioxide cycle (s-CO2) and integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC). For each one, 100% solar contribution, which is considered the total thermal input to the power cycle, can be satisfied by the solar particle receiver. The main findings show that the s-CO2 cycle is the most suitable thermodynamic cycle for the DPS solar plant, exhibiting a net cycle efficiency above 50% for a moderate temperature range (680–730 °C). For the other advanced power cycles, 45.35% net efficiency can be achieved for the s-steam case, while the efficiency of the ISCC configuration is limited to 45.23% for the solar-only operation mode.
Navigation in complex and unknown environments is a major challenge for elderly blind people. Unfortunately, conventional navigation aids such as white canes and guide dogs provide only limited ...assistance to blind people with walking impairments as they can hardly be combined with a walker, required for walking assistance. Additionally, such navigation aids are constrained to the local vicinity only. We believe that technologies developed in the field of robotics have the potential to assist blind people with walking disabilities in complex navigation tasks as they can provide information about obstacles and reason on both global and local aspects of the environment. The contribution of this article is a smart walker that navigates blind users safely by leveraging recent developments in robotics. Our walker can support the user in two ways, namely by providing information about the vicinity to avoid obstacles and by guiding the user to reach the designated target location. It includes vibro-tactile user interfaces and a controller that takes into account human motion behavior obtained from a user study. In extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments that also involved blind and age-matched participants we demonstrate that our smart walker safely navigates users with limited vision.
Objective
Juvenile localized scleroderma (LS) is an autoimmune disease of the skin whose pathogenesis is not well understood due to the rarity of the disease. This study was undertaken to determine ...the skin transcriptome in skin biopsy tissue from children with juvenile LS compared to pediatric healthy controls, with identification of significant molecular targets using RNA sequencing (RNA‐Seq). In this study, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were assessed for correlations with histopathologic and clinical features in children with juvenile LS, and were used to group the children into distinct genetic clusters based on immunophenotype.
Methods
RNA‐Seq was performed on sections of paraffin‐embedded skin tissue obtained from 28 children with juvenile LS and 10 pediatric healthy controls. RNA‐Seq was carried out using an Illumina HTS TruSeq RNA Access library prep kit, with data aligned using STAR and data analysis using a DESeq2 platform. A standardized histologic scoring system was used to score skin sections for the severity of inflammation and levels of collagen deposition. Histologic scoring was completed by 2 pathologists who were blinded with regard to the status of each sample. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were used to assess significant correlations between DEG expression profiles and skin histologic findings in patients with juvenile LS.
Results
We identified 589 significant DEGs in children with juvenile LS as compared to healthy controls. Hierarchical clustering was used to demonstrate 3 distinct juvenile LS immunophenotype clusters. The histologic scores of skin inflammation (based on numbers and categories of inflammatory cell infiltrates) were significantly correlated with the expression levels of HLA–DPB1, HLA–DQA2, HLA–DRA, and STAT1 genes (rs > 0.5, P < 0.01). Collagen thickness correlated with the expression levels of collagen organization genes as well as with genes found to be correlated with the severity of inflammation, including genes for major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I, MHC class II, and interferon‐γ signaling.
Conclusion
Among children with juvenile LS, 3 distinct genetic signatures, or clusters, were identified. In one cluster, inflammation‐related pathways were up‐regulated, corresponding to the histologic skin inflammation score. In the second cluster, fibrosis‐related pathways were up‐regulated. In the third cluster, gene expression in the skin corresponded to the patterns seen in healthy controls. Up‐regulation of HLA class II genes was observed within the first cluster (characterized by predominant inflammation), a feature that has also been observed in the peripheral blood of patients with morphea and in the skin of patients with systemic sclerosis.
