In 1990, Andrew Bakun proposed that increasing greenhouse gas
concentrations would force intensification of upwelling-favorable winds
in eastern boundary current systems that contribute substantial ...services
to society. Because there is considerable disagreement about whether
contemporary wind trends support Bakun's hypothesis, we performed a
meta-analysis of the literature on upwelling-favorable wind
intensification. The preponderance of published analyses suggests that
winds have intensified in the California, Benguela, and Humboldt
upwelling systems and weakened in the Iberian system over time scales
ranging up to 60 years; wind change is equivocal in the Canary system.
Stronger intensification signals are observed at higher latitudes,
consistent with the warming pattern associated with climate change.
Overall, reported changes in coastal winds, although subtle and
spatially variable, support Bakun's hypothesis of upwelling
intensification in eastern boundary current systems.
ABSTRACT
While intensively studied, it remains unclear how the star formation (SF) in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) compares to that of nearby clouds. We study G351.77-0.53 (henceforth G351), a ...cluster-forming filamentary IRDC. We begin by characterizing its young stellar object (YSO) content. Based on the average parallax of likely members, we obtain a Gaia distance of $\sim \, 2.0\pm 0.14$ kpc, resolving the literature distance ambiguity. Using our Herschel-derived N(H2) map, we measure a total gas mass of 10 200 M⊙ (within 11 pc2) and the average line-mass profile of the entire filament, which we model as $\lambda =~1660 (w/\rm pc)^{0.62}\, \, {\rm M}_{\odot }\, \rm {pc}^{-1}$. At w < 0.63 pc, our λ profile is higher and has a steeper power-law index than λ profiles extracted in Orion A and most of its substructures. Based on the YSOs inside the filament area, we estimate the SF efficiency (SFE) and SF rate (SFR). We calculate a factor of 5 incompleteness correction for our YSO catalogue relative to Spitzer surveys of Orion A. The G351 SFE is ∼1.8 times lower than that of Orion A and lower than the median value for local clouds. We measure SFR and gas masses to estimate the efficiency per free-fall time, ϵff. We find that ϵff is ∼1.1 dex below the previously proposed mean local relation, and $\sim \, 4.7\times$ below Orion A. These observations indicate that local SF-relations do not capture variations present in the Galaxy. We speculate that cloud youth and/or magnetic fields might account for the G351 inefficiency.

Aims.
Thanks to the high angular resolution, sensitivity, image fidelity, and frequency coverage of ALMA, we aim to improve our understanding of star formation. One of the breakthroughs expected from ...ALMA, which is the basis of our Cycle 5 ALMA-IMF Large Program, is the question of the origin of the initial mass function (IMF) of stars. Here we present the ALMA-IMF protocluster selection, first results, and scientific prospects.
Methods.
ALMA-IMF imaged a total noncontiguous area of ~53 pc
2
, covering extreme, nearby protoclusters of the Milky Way. We observed 15 massive (2.5 −33 × 10
3
M
⊙
), nearby (2−5.5 kpc) protoclusters that were selected to span relevant early protocluster evolutionary stages. Our 1.3 and 3 mm observations provide continuum images that are homogeneously sensitive to point-like cores with masses of ~0.2
M
⊙
and ~0.6
M
⊙
, respectively, with a matched spatial resolution of ~2000 au across the sample at both wavelengths. Moreover, with the broad spectral coverage provided by ALMA, we detect lines that probe the ionized and molecular gas, as well as complex molecules. Taken together, these data probe the protocluster structure, kinematics, chemistry, and feedback over scales from clouds to filaments to cores.
Results.
We classify ALMA-IMF protoclusters as Young (six protoclusters), Intermediate (five protoclusters), or Evolved (four proto-clusters) based on the amount of dense gas in the cloud that has potentially been impacted by H
II
region(s). The ALMA-IMF catalog contains ~700 cores that span a mass range of ~0.15
M
⊙
to ~250
M
⊙
at a typical size of ~2100 au. We show that this core sample has no significant distance bias and can be used to build core mass functions (CMFs) at similar physical scales. Significant gas motions, which we highlight here in the G353.41 region, are traced down to core scales and can be used to look for inflowing gas streamers and to quantify the impact of the possible associated core mass growth on the shape of the CMF with time. Our first analysis does not reveal any significant evolution of the matter concentration from clouds to cores (i.e., from 1 pc to 0.01 pc scales) or from the youngest to more evolved protoclusters, indicating that cloud dynamical evolution and stellar feedback have for the moment only had a slight effect on the structure of high-density gas in our sample. Furthermore, the first-look analysis of the line richness toward bright cores indicates that the survey encompasses several tens of hot cores, of which we highlight the most massive in the G351.77 cloud. Their homogeneous characterization can be used to constrain the emerging molecular complexity in protostars of high to intermediate masses.
Conclusions.
The ALMA-IMF Large Program is uniquely designed to transform our understanding of the IMF origin, taking the effects of cloud characteristics and evolution into account. It will provide the community with an unprecedented database with a high legacy value for protocluster clouds, filaments, cores, hot cores, outflows, inflows, and stellar clusters studies.

The vastness of the worlds' oceans makes them difficult to monitor. Seabirds that forage and breed across oceans globally have been recognized as sentinels of ocean health. Sydeman
...et al.
looked across seabird species of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and found varying patterns. Northern Hemisphere species exhibited greater signs of stress and reduced breeding success, indicative of low fish resources. Southern Hemisphere species showed less impact on reproductive output, suggesting that the fish populations there have thus far been less disturbed. The differences across hemispheres indicate different strategies for conservation, with active recovery needed in the north and enhanced protection in the south.

The breeding success of seabirds is tracking hemispheric differences in ocean warming and human impacts.
Climate change and other human activities are causing profound effects on marine ecosystem productivity. We show that the breeding success of seabirds is tracking hemispheric differences in ocean warming and human impacts, with the strongest effects on fish-eating, surface-foraging species in the north. Hemispheric asymmetry suggests the need for ocean management at hemispheric scales. For the north, tactical, climate-based recovery plans for forage fish resources are needed to recover seabird breeding productivity. In the south, lower-magnitude change in seabird productivity presents opportunities for strategic management approaches such as large marine protected areas to sustain food webs and maintain predator productivity. Global monitoring of seabird productivity enables the detection of ecosystem change in remote regions and contributes to our understanding of marine climate impacts on ecosystems.
Blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption occurs during human immunodeficiency virus encephalopathy, but the mechanisms involved are not understood. We studied how acute and ongoing exposure to human ...immunodeficiency virus 1 envelope gp120 alters BBB structure and permeability. Intravenous Evans blue, given before stereotaxic gp120 injection into the caudate putamen of rats, was rapidly extravasated. Gelatinolytic activity, studied by in situ zymography, was increased after gp120 administration and was localized within cerebralvessel walls. The gp120 increased the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) 2 and 9. Laminin and claudin-5, key BBB components and targets of both MMPs, were greatly reduced upon gp120 administration. The gp120 increased lipid peroxidation in the vascular endothelium and in neurons. Prior administration of rSV40 vectors carrying the antioxidant enzymes Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase or glutathione peroxidase protected from gp120-induced BBB damage. N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor activation upregulated pro-MMP-9 and increased MMP-9 gelatinase activity, and memantine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor blocker, mitigated gp120-induced BBB abnormalities. Using intra-caudate putamen SV(gp120) to test the effects of chronic exposure to expressed gp120, we determined that oxidant stress and increased BBB permeability occurred as in acute exposure. These data indicate that both direct administration and cellular expression of gp120 lead to disruption of the BBB by increasing MMPs and reducing vascular tight junction proteins via mechanisms involving reactive oxygen species generation and oxidant injury.

The exposome is the cumulative measure of environmental influences and associated biological responses throughout the lifespan, including those from the environment, diet, behaviour, and endogenous ...processes. The exposome concept and the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the United Nations are the basis for understanding the aetiology and consequences of non-communicable diseases, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Pregnancy may be developed in an environment with adverse factors part of the immediate internal medium for fetus development and the external medium to which the pregnant woman is exposed. The placenta is the interface between maternal and fetal compartments and acts as a protective barrier or easing agent to transfer exposome from mother to fetus. Under and over-nutrition in utero, exposure to adverse environmental pollutants such as heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pesticides, drugs, pharmaceuticals, lifestyle, air pollutants, and tobacco smoke plays a determinant role in the development of GDM. This phenomenon is worsened by metabolic stress postnatally, such as obesity which increases the risk of GDM and other diseases. Clinical risk factors for GDM development include its aetiology. It is proposed that knowledge-based interventions to change the potential interdependent ecto-exposome and endo-exposome could avoid the occurrence and consequences of GDM.

DTI is a tool for microstructural spinal cord injury evaluation. This study evaluated the reproducibility of a semiautomated segmentation algorithm of spinal cord DTI.
Forty-two consecutive patients ...undergoing acute trauma cervical spine MR imaging underwent 2 axial DTI scans in addition to their clinical scan. The datasets were put through a semiautomated probabilistic segmentation algorithm that selected white matter, gray matter, and 24 individual white matter tracts. Regional and white matter tract volume, fractional anisotropy, and mean diffusivity values were calculated. Two readers performed the nonautomated steps to evaluate interreader reproducibility. The coefficient of variation and intraclass correlation coefficient were used to assess test-retest and interreader reproducibility.
Of 42 patients, 30 had useable data. Test-retest reproducibility of fractional anisotropy was high for white matter as a whole (coefficient of variation, 3.8%; intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.93). Test-retest coefficient-of-variation ranged from 8.0%-18.2% and intraclass correlation coefficients from 0.47-0.80 across individual white matter tracts. Mean diffusivity metrics also had high test-retest reproducibility (white matter: coefficient-of-variation, 5.6%; intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.86) with coefficients of variation from 11.6%-18.3% and intraclass correlation coefficients from 0.57-0.74 across individual tracts, with better agreement for larger tracts. The coefficients of variation of fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity both had significant negative relationships with white matter volume (26%-27% decrease for each doubling of white matter volume,
< .01).
DTI spinal cord segmentation is reproducible in the setting of acute spine trauma, specifically for larger white matter tracts and total white or gray matter.
It has been demonstrated that vitamin D (Vit D) included in diets offers a beneficial effect by improving innate immune responses in chickens. However, its mechanisms of action and the effect on ...immunosuppressive pathogens, such as infectious bursal disease virus, are not yet known. In the present study, we have studied the immunomodulatory effect of Vit D on the innate immune response in 3 cell lines: fibroblast cells (DF-1), macrophages (HD11), and B cells (DT-40) infected with IBDV (intermediate vaccine) at 2 multiplicity of infections (MOI) (1 and 0.1). Genes associated with innate immune responses (TLR-3, TLR-21, MDA-5, MyD88, TRIF, IRF-7, INF-α, INF-β, PKR, OAS, viperin, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-12) were evaluated at different time points (3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 h after infection, h.p.i). Virus production reached a maximum at 24 h.p.i., which was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in DF-1 cells, followed by HD-11 and DT-40 cells. Mainly in HD-11 cells, there was a significant (P < 0.05) effect of Vit D supplementation on receptors TLR-3, TLR-21, and MDA-5 after 12 h.p.i, independent of MOI. DT-40 cells showed the highest antiviral activity, with a significant (P < 0.05) effect on IRF-7, IFN-β, OAS, and PKR gene expression, where expression of IRF-7 and IFN-β correlated positively with Vit D supplementation, while OAS and PKR were independent of Vit D. Proinflammatory cytokines were significantly (P < 0.05) upregulated and found to be Vit D and MOI dependent. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the capacity of IBDV to trigger a strong innate immune response in chicken cells and contributes to the understanding of the activation pathways of innate immunity induced by IBDV and further shows the benefitial effect of Vit D supplementation as an immunomodulator.
