To meet growing demand for wood, particularly softwoods, the authors study a number of new silvicultural pathways for planting 3 species: Douglas fir, spruce and maritime pine. The goal of these ...pathways is to achieve specialised production of either industrial and workable timber, or a mixture of industrial and workable timber with medium-diameter workable timber. Pathways of this type have already been standardised for hardwoods, generally on fertile farmland. In a less fertile forest context, softwoods have a significant potential for woody production but specialized pathways and their profitability have yet to be studied. This article describes the innovative work being done to construct and simulate profitable production, new potential pathways, where plantation density, rotation time, the level of fertility are made to vary using the data from the FCBA test network in conjunction with the FCBA growth models (Oasis for spruce and Douglas fir, Sylveco for maritime pine). Economic data is derived from auction sales statistics and the ONF management and forestry work costs for the period 2012-2015. The Economics module developed by FCBA and ONF on the Capsis platform in the framework of the ICI project (Futurol) was used for the economic simulations. The analyses show that compared to conventional pathways, these pathways generally increase productivity but are nonetheless less profitable than current economic assumptions, although results vary according to species, fertility and the particular pathway. The sensitivity study shows that variations in the price of wood could alter the performance ratings as between conventional and specialised pathways.
Pour répondre à une demande croissante en bois, en particulier résineux, les auteurs étudient de nouveaux itinéraires sylvicoles en plantation pour 3 essences : le Douglas, l’Épicéa et le Pin maritime. Ces itinéraires visent une production spécialisée soit exclusivement en bois d’industrie et bois énergie (BIBE), soit un mixte BIBE et bois d’œuvre (BO) de diamètre moyen. De tels itinéraires sont déjà référencés pour les feuillus, plutôt sur terrains agricoles fertiles. En contexte forestier moins fertile, les résineux présentent un potentiel de production ligneuse intéressant, mais dont les itinéraires spécialisés, et leur rentabilité économique, restent à étudier. L’article présente le travail original réalisé pour construire et simuler les productions associées aux résultats économiques de nouveaux itinéraires potentiels, en faisant varier les densités de plantation, les durées de révolution, les niveaux de fertilité, à partir de données du réseau d’essais FCBA et à l’aide de modèles de croissance du FCBA (Oasis pour Épicéa et Douglas ; Sylveco pour Pin maritime). Les données économiques proviennent des statistiques des ventes de bois et des coûts de travaux et de gestion de l’ONF sur la période 2012-2015. Les simulations économiques ont été réalisées avec le module Economics développé par FCBA et ONF sur la plateforme Capsis dans le cadre du projet ICIF (Futurol). Les analyses montrent que par rapport aux itinéraires classiques, ces itinéraires augmentent en général la productivité mais restent moins rentables dans les hypothèses économiques actuelles, avec cependant des résultats différenciés selon l’essence, la fertilité et l’itinéraire. Les résultats de l’étude de sensibilité montrent que les variations des prix du bois pourraient moduler le classement des performances entre les itinéraires classiques et spécialisés.
The effects of population density and summer drought were analysed by means of diameter and height growth in sessile oaks (Quercus petraea) on the stand and individual tree scales. Dendrometric ...inventory data collected from two networks of silvicultural experimentation were used (LERFOB and GIS Coop networks, 9 sites, 31 plots, 99 inventories, ages from 10 to 120 years). These networks study the effects of a broad range of densities, from freely growing trees (relative density index, or RDI, close to 0) to maximum density situations where self-thinning occurs (RDI equal to or in excess of 1). Climate conditions vary from 660 to 850 mm per year with a heat gradient of 9.5 to 11.5 °C (average 1990-2010). Generally speaking, density very strongly affects tree and stand growth, with drought playing a secondary role that is nonetheless significant. Overtopped trees contribute very little to the growth of the stand, particularly when the stand is dense. Drought reduces growth, particularly that of non-dominant trees. Density and drought therefore have the same effect: they accentuate growth differences between trees when stresses are greater. By allocating more resources to diameter growth as compared to height growth, trees in open stands are more “stocky”. In contrast, in densely populated stands, there is “a race for light” making for greater height growth, especially that of overtopped trees. In all cases, drought has a greater effect in reducing height growth than in reducing diameter growth. Finally, following a particularly severe drought (1976), trees recovered most quickly at the drier sites (recovery in 2 years) while the overtopped trees in the higher density stands recovered very little (still no recovery 7 years later). These results suggest that sessile oak adapts better in drier conditions.
Les effets de la densité du peuplement et de la sécheresse estivale ont été analysés sur la croissance en diamètre et en hauteur du Chêne sessile (Quercus petraea) à l’échelle du peuplement et de l’arbre. Les données des inventaires dendrométriques issues de deux réseaux d’expérimentations sylvicoles ont été utilisées (réseaux LERFOB et GIS Coop, 9 sites, 31 placettes, 99 inventaires, âges de 10 à 120 ans). Ces réseaux étudient les effets de larges gradients de densité, depuis des arbres en croissance libre (relative density index, ou RDI, proche de 0) jusqu’à des situations de densité maximale avec des phénomènes d’autoéclaircie (RDI supérieur ou égal à 1). Les conditions climatiques varient de 660 à 850 mm par an pour un gradient thermique de 9,5 à 11,5 °C (moyenne 1990-2010). D’une façon générale, la densité module très fortement la croissance des arbres et du peuplement, la sécheresse jouant un rôle secondaire mais néanmoins significatif. Les arbres dominés participent peu à la croissance du peuplement et ceci est d’autant plus vrai que le peuplement est dense. La sécheresse réduit la croissance et ceci particulièrement pour les arbres non dominants. Ainsi densité et sécheresse ont le même effet, c’est-à-dire qu’elles accentuent les différences de croissance entre arbres quand les contraintes augmentent. En allouant davantage de ressources à leur croissance en diamètre par rapport à leur croissance en hauteur, les arbres dans les peuplements ouverts sont « trapus ». Au contraire, dans les peuplements denses, c’est la « course à la lumière » avec une croissance en hauteur accrue et ceci d’autant plus que l’arbre est dominé. Dans tous les cas, la sécheresse réduit davantage la croissance en hauteur que la croissance en diamètre. Enfin, après une sécheresse exceptionnelle (1976), la récupération des arbres a été la plus rapide sur les sites les plus secs (récupération après 2 ans) et elle fut très faible pour les arbres dominés dans les peuplements les plus denses (toujours pas de récupération après 7 ans). Ces résultats suggèrent une meilleure adaptation des chênes sessiles dans les conditions plus sèches.
The area of French forest has grew by 60% in a century, and is at the fourth position on the European rank; Its harvesting was doubled at the same time; however the national trade-balance of the wood ...products sector is still in deficit. This forest is also facing important changes: climatic (composition and productivity of forest are affected, frequency and intensity of forest disturbances increase), societal (workers are fewer in the forest and we are more aware of benefits and services to society provided by forest) and bioeconomic (fossil resources decrease and we need of renewable materials). Wood is a versatile material which is renewable and can be used from construction, furniture to pulp and composite material, with a final recycling in energy. This cascading use of wood products enables a low carbon production of materials and energy, particulary effective for new challenges in bioeconomy. To address this joint challenge of stronger and differentiated demands on wood resource and threats and constraints on the forest, some innovations and research of the public forest service are presented in this paper. The diversity of solutions (in harvesting, silvicultural treatment, species, soil monitoring…) underlines the potential of innovations in forest management and the need to mix and transfer them.
Même si la surface de la forêt française a progressé de 60% en un siècle, la plaçant à la quatrième place au rang européen, que sa récolte a dans le même temps doublé, la balance commerciale du bois et des produits dérivés est la seconde déficitaire au niveau national. Cette forêt est également confrontée à d’importants changements : climatiques, pouvant faire varier sa composition et son étendue spatiale ; sociétaux, avec de moins en moins de main-d’oeuvre en forêt simultanément à une prise de conscience des nombreux services écosystémiques rendus par ces espaces naturels ; mais surtout mondiaux avec la diminution des ressources fossiles, qui peuvent être pour partie remplacées par ce matériau polyvalent qu’est le bois. Le bois est effectivement une ressource renouvelable qui peut répondre à différents besoins de nos sociétés (construction, meubles, emballage, papier, chimie, matériaux composites, énergie), avec une utilisation des produits en cascade, jusqu’à un recyclage final ou une valorisation énergétique, assurant une production de matière et d’énergie à faible niveau de dioxyde carbone, particulièrement efficace. Pour relever ce défi conjoint de demandes plus fortes et plus différenciées sur la ressource, et de menaces importantes sur son évolution, quels sont les leviers à la disposition des gestionnaires de la forêt publique ? Cet article présente quelques pistes d’innovations à l’interface entre recherche et gestion, qui explorent des solutions différentiées mais ciblées sur des attentes des gestionnaires. La diversité des exemples en exploitation, renouvellement des peuplements, sylviculture et suivi de la fertilité des sols, souligne la richesse des innovations potentielles et le besoin de les mêler pour répondre aux attentes de la société. La forêt publique est façonnée par l’homme depuis des siècles, permettons-lui ensemble de s’adapter, et de nous aider à relever le défi d’une société plus sobre, valorisant les matériaux renouvelables, tout en continuant à assurer les multiples services écosystémiques.
La plantation forestière est un outil important pour l’adaptation des forêts aux changements globaux. Les échecs parfois récurrents dans certains contextes, les coûts associés à la plantation, la ...pénibilité du travail pour les ouvriers forestiers ainsi que les impacts environnementaux parfois négatifs sont autant de facteurs qui freinent le recours à la plantation et peuvent ainsi limiter la capacité d’adaptation des forêts. Un ensemble de travaux ont été menés pour répondre aux besoins en innovation technique sur les méthodes de plantation exprimés par les praticiens. Ces travaux portent sur le processus d’innovation en sylviculture et sur l’amélioration technique des méthodes de plantation. L’analyse du processus d’innovation indique une faiblesse des réseaux sociotechniques associée à un mauvais partage des connaissances entre acteurs, et une réticence à l’investissement dans du nouveau matériel, dans un contexte économique perçu comme incertain. Ces observations suggèrent qu’un des leviers possibles serait une meilleure mise en réseau des acteurs, à travers différents liens fonctionnels: partage d’information, échanges de services, construction de partenariats économiques. Des exemples de méthodes innovantes pour réaliser chacune des différentes étapes de l’itinéraire de plantation (préparation du site, plantation, entretiens), répondant aux besoins d’innovation technique exprimés par les praticiens, sont ensuite présentés.

Most forest ecosystems grow on acid and nutrient poor soils. In many cases, a slow degradation of forest soil chemical fertility due to increasing external pressures (decreasing atmospheric inputs, intensification of biomass harvesting and silvicultural practices) has been observed and is a growing concern in the international forest community. When the pressure endured by low fertility forest ecosystems is too intense, nutrient losses and ecosystem function losses may occur, forest decline being the ultimate stage of this process. In such cases, forest liming with a carbonate product is a solution to restore soil fertility and reduce soil acidity, globally improve the ecosystem functioning and compensate for nutrient losses caused by biomass harvest and exportation. However, the effects of liming on ecosystem processes and the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients in forest ecosystems are still unclear. We studied the dynamics of magnesium and calcium originating from the dissolution of liming products in the different compartments (organic and mineral soil layers and, aboveground biomass) of five long-term (20 to 40 years) monitoring beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) plots located in Northern France from ecosystem magnesium and calcium budgets.
Compared to the control plots, soil exchangeable pools of Mg and Ca in the 0–15 cm mineral soil layer increased during the first decade after liming but these differences rapidly decreased after 20–30 years. The effect of liming on foliar concentrations and tree growth was still observed after 40 years, most probably because the biological cycling of these elements was more dynamic in the limed plots. Liming increased the decomposition rate of the soil organic layer but the pools of Mg and Ca in this layer remained relatively stable over time, probably because Mg and Ca concentrations in foliage and litterfall increased after the liming. Liming effects varied between sites depending on the liming product and amount, and the initial chemical fertility level of the soil. Although liming operations may help improve forest soil fertility, they may also generate nutrient deficiencies and/or imbalances for nutrients that are poorly available in the soil. The planning of liming operations therefore necessitates a thorough soil chemical fertility diagnosis.
Plant–soil interactions are increasingly recognized to play a major role in terrestrial ecosystems functioning. However, few studies to date have focused on slow dynamic ecosystems such as forests. ...As they are vertically stratified by multiple vegetation strata, canopy tree removal by thinning operations could alter forest plant community through tree canopy opening. Very little is known about cascading effects on soil biodiversity.
We conducted a large‐scale, multi‐site assessment of collembolan assemblage response to long‐term canopy tree removal in sessile oak Quercus petraea temperate forests. A total of 33 experimental plots were studied covering a large gradient of canopy tree basal area, stand age and local abiotic contexts.
Collembolan abundance strongly declined with canopy tree removal in early forest successional stage and this was mediated by negative effect of understory plant community composition changes, i.e. shift from moss and forb to tree seedling, fern, shrub and grass species. Negative effect of this composition shift on collembolan species richness was largely offset by positive effect of the increase in understory plant species richness. This gives support to both the plant mass‐ratio and functional diversity hypotheses. Collembolan functional groups had contrasting response patterns, which were mediated by different ecological factors. Epedaphic (r‐strategist) abundance and species richness increased with canopy tree removal in relation with the increase in understory plant species richness. In contrast, euedaphic (K‐strategist) abundance and species richness declined with canopy tree removal in early forest successional stage in relation with changes in understory plant community composition and species richness, as well as microclimatic conditions.
Overall, our study provides experimental evidence that forest plant community can be a strong driver of collembolan assemblages. It also emphasizes the role of trees as foundation species of forest ecosystems that can shape soil biodiversity through their regulation of understory plant community and ecosystem abiotic conditions.
Mechanical site preparation (MSP) is widely used in forestry to improve plantation success. Although it is known to alter soil properties, its direct effects on soil structure have rarely been ...described. The cultivation profile is a visual soil evaluation (VSE) method developed in agricultural research to analyse the impacts of cultivation practices on soil structure. The objective of the study was to adapt the method to forest plantations in order to analyse the effects of MSP on soil quality. Cultivation profiles were performed in six experimental plantation sites located in Northern France. The method made it possible to compare the impacts on soil structure of three MSP methods. It provided a schematic representation of the soil structural quality and a quantitative estimation of the volume of soil favourable to seedling root growth. It also highlighted unexpected negative effects of some MSP methods on soil structure, such as the creation of small cavities, the presence of compacted soil volumes due to wheel tracks or smeared soil volumes due to tool pass, and the pseudogleisation of soil zones due to changes in water circulation in the soil. The relevance and limitations of VSE methods in the context of forest plantation as well as the expected future development of the methods are discussed.
The importance of plant litter traits and decomposability for nutrient cycling processes and plant community dynamics through plantplant–litter–feedbacks has been largely emphasized. However, the ...role of biotic interactions as drivers of intraspecific variability in litter traits remains surprisingly little studied. In this study, we used a large-scale, multi-site network of long-term tree removal experiments manipulating the abundance of a foundation tree species, i.e., Quercus petraea, to assess how plant interactions control intraspecific variation in oak leaf litter traits and decomposability. We studied 19 plots across eight experimental sites covering a large gradient of oak abundance, stand age, and local abiotic context. Oak leaf litter quality strongly declined with tree removal in early forest successional stage. Litter became poorer in nutrients such as N and Mg and richer in secondary metabolites such as lignin and condensed tannins. This in turn slowed its decomposition. Importantly, litter N loss switched from N release to N immobilization. Variance partitioning indicated that oak abundance explained as much variation in oak leaf litter traits as oak age and twice as much as soil inherent fertility. Confirmatory path analysis revealed that the decline of oak leaf litter quality induced by tree removal was most likely driven by a shift in understory plant species composition. Plasticity of oak leaf litter traits to the shortage of nutrient supply related to the development of understory plants competitors with higher nutrient capture and retention ability could potentially explain this response pattern. Our data also give consistent but weaker support that the decline of oak leaf litter quality could be driven by alleviated competition for light among canopy trees and subsequent enhanced crown exposure to light. Overall, our study provides evidence that biotic factors such as plant interactions are major drivers of plasticity in leaf litter traits and decomposability. This finding contributes to the emerging view that phenotypic plasticity is fundamentally related to biotic interactions for sessile organisms, especially for long-lived and large plant species such as trees. Taking this source of functional diversity into account could help us to better understand plant community dynamics and ecological processes in terrestrial ecosystems.
Mechanical site preparation methods that used tools mounted on lightweight excavators and that provided localised intensive preparation were tested in eight experimental sites across France where the ...vegetation was dominated either by (L.) Moench or (L.) Kuhn. Two lightweight tools (Deep Scarifier: DS; Deep Scarifier followed by Multifunction Subsoiler: DS+MS) were tested in pine ( L., var. (Loudon) Hyl. or Aiton) and oak ( (Matt.) Liebl. or L.) plantations. Regional methods commonly used locally (herbicide, disk harrow, mouldboard plow) and experimental methods (repeated herbicide application; untreated control) were used as references in the experiments. Neighbouring vegetation cover, seedling survival, height and basal diameter were assessed over three to five years after plantation. For pines growing in , seedling diameter after four years was 37% and 98% greater in DS and DS+MS, respectively, than in the untreated control. For pines growing in , it was 62% and 107% greater in the same treatments. For oak, diameter was only 4% and 15% greater in , and 13% and 25% greater in , in the same treatments. For pines, the survival rate after four years was 26% and 32% higher in and 64% and 70% higher in , in the same treatments. For oak, it was 3% and 29% higher in and 37% and 31% higher in . Herbicide, when applied for three or four years after planting, provided the best growth performances for pines growing in and and for oaks growing in . For these species and site combinations, DS+MS and DS treatments reduced the neighbouring vegetation cover for one to four years following site preparation.

Reducing stand density by thinning intensification has been emphasized as an efficient strategy of forest adaptation to climate change as it improves stand resistance to drought. Yet, it is still ...unclear how it could affect litter carbon (C) cycling processes. Recent evidence indicates that the plasticity of an oak tree species can lead to a decline in its leaf litter quality and decomposability following thinning. The consequences for litter decomposition and forest floor C storage at the ecosystem scale remain largely unexplored.
In this study, we took advantage of a regional‐scale, multi‐site network of long‐term thinning experiments in temperate oak (Quercus petraea) forests to address this issue. We measured ecosystem properties related to forest floor C cycling in 19 plots across eight experimental sites covering a large gradient of stand density and age. Though we expected thinning to affect in situ litter decomposition by altering oak leaf litter quality, we conducted complementary experiments exploring additional mechanisms, that is alterations of microenvironmental conditions and soil faunal activity.
Thinning intensification induced a strong decline in tree canopy leaf area index, above‐ground tree litter production and forest floor decomposition rate in early “aggradation” stage of forest development. This slower litter decomposition was mainly driven by plasticity of oak trees that produced leaf litter of poorer quality and decomposability following thinning, for example, litter richer in secondary metabolites such as condensed tannins. Change in microenvironmental conditions also contributed to the slowdown of litter decomposition, likely as a result of the less buffered microclimate associated with larger tree canopy opening. No change in soil faunal effect induced by thinning was observed.
Thinning intensification resulted in a limited decrease in forest floor C stock. Indeed, the slower litter decomposition offset nearly half of the forest floor C loss associated to the reduced litterfall in “aggradation” stage.
Our study demonstrated that phenotypic plasticity in leaf litter traits of a dominant tree species can strongly affect ecosystem functioning by slowing forest floor decomposition following thinning intensification, in turn partly mitigating the negative effect of thinning on forest floor C storage.
Abstrait
La production et la décomposition des litières sont des processus clés du cycle du carbone dans les écosystemes terrestres. Comprendre comment ceux‐ci sont affectés par les facteurs du changement global est essentiel pour évaluer les conséquences potentielles sur la dynamique du carbone et les boucles de rétroactions avec le climat. Les forêts tempérées sont fortement menacées par le phénomène croissant des vagues de chaleur et de sécheresses estivales, qui peuvent entraîner une mortalité massive des arbres. La gestion forestière pourrait être utilisée pour rendre les peuplements forestiers mieux adaptés au changement climatique. La réduction de la densité des peuplements en intensifiant les éclaircies est par exemple mise en avant comme une stratégie d’adaptation efficace pour renforcer la résistance des peuplements aux sécheresses. Dans cette étude portant sur des forêts de chênes sessiles, nous avons examiner comment cette adaptation de la gestion forestière pourrait affecter les processus écosystémiques liés au recyclage du carbone dans les couches organiques du sol forestier, à savoir le tapis forestier.
Nous avons sans surprise observé qu'une coupe partielle des peuplements par les opérations d'éclaircie entrainait une ouverture de la canopée arborée et une réduction de la production de litière aérienne. Toutefois, l'ampleur du déclin ultérieur de la masse du tapis forestier et de son stock de carbone était étonnamment faible. En effet, nous avons également observé que l’intensification des éclaircies entraînait un ralentissement de la décomposition des litières. Des investigations complémentaires ont révélé que ce ralentissement s’expliquait principalement par la production de feuilles de chêne de moindre qualité biochimique après éclaircies. Cette litière était plus riche en métabolites secondaires récalcitrants tels que les tannins, et était donc moins décomposable. La plus grande instabilité du microclimat lié à l'ouverture de la canopée arborée semble également contribuer à cette décomposition plus lente de la litière.
Dans l'ensemble, notre étude suggère que plusieurs mécanismes contribuent à atténuer en partie les conséquences de l'intensification des éclaircies pour le stockage du carbone dans les tapis forestiers. Parmi eux, la plasticité phénotypique des arbres apparaît comme un facteur sous‐estimé mais essentiel, qui devrait donc être mieux pris en compte pour comprendre la réponse du fonctionnement des écosystèmes forestiers au changement global.
