We present observations that were carried out with the Two HUndred Micron PhotometER (THUMPER) mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii, at a wavelength of 200 mum (frequency 1.5 ...THz). The observations utilize a small atmospheric window that opens up at this wavelength under very dry conditions at high-altitude observing sites. The atmosphere was calibrated using the sky-dipping method and a relation was established between the optical depth, upsilon, at 1.5 THz and that at 225 GHz: upsilon1.5 THz = (95 +/- 10) xupsilon225 GHz. Mars and Jupiter were mapped from the ground at this wavelength for the first time, and the system characteristics measured. A noise-equivalent flux density (NEFD) of 65 +/- 10 Jy (1tau 1s) was measured for the THUMPER-JCMT combination, consistent with predictions based upon our laboratory measurements. The main beam resolution of 14 arcsec was confirmed and an extended error beam detected at roughly two-thirds of the magnitude of the main beam. Measurements of the Sun allow us to estimate that the fraction of the power in the main beam is 15 per cent, consistent with predictions based on modelling the dish surface accuracy. It is therefore shown that the sky over Mauna Kea is suitable for astronomy at this wavelength under the best conditions. To assess the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) on anemia in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who are receiving zidovudine therapy.

Two hundred and ninety-seven anemic (hematocrit < 30%) patients with AIDS who were receiving zidovudine therapy. Of the 297 patients, 255 were evaluable for efficacy, but all patients were included in analysis of safety.
Patients were randomly assigned to receive either r-HuEPO (100 to 200 U/kg body weight) or placebo, intravenously or subcutaneously, three times per week for up to 12 weeks.
Changes in mean hematocrit, transfusion requirement, and quality of life.
Sixty-nine percent of patients had endogenous serum erythropoietin levels less than or equal to 500 IU/L, and 31% had erythropoietin levels greater than 500 IU/L. In patients with low erythropoietin levels (< or equal to 500 IU/l), r-HuEPO therapy decreased the mean number of units of blood transfused per patient when compared with placebo (3.2 units and 5.3 units, respectively; P = 0.003) and increased the mean hematocrit from the baseline level (4.6 percentage points and 0.5 percentage points, respectively; P <0.001). Overall quality of life improved in patients on r-HuEPO therapy (P = 0.13). Patients with erythropoietin levels greater than 500 IU/L showed no benefit from r-HuEPO in any outcome variable. Placebo and r-HuEPO recipients did not differ in the incidence of adverse effects or opportunistic infections.
Therapy with r-HuEPO can increase the mean hematocrit and decrease the mean transfusion requirement in anemic patients with AIDS who are receiving zidovudine and have endogenous low erythropoietin levels (< or equal to 500 IU/L). Such therapy is of no apparent benefit in patients whose endogenous erythropoietin levels are higher than 500 IU/L.

Leaf spot, caused by Cercospora hydrangeae Ellis & Everh., is a common disease of bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) in ornamental nurseries and gardens. Experiments were conducted to ...determine the effects of cultivar and shading density on the disease severity. Two year-old plants of six bigleaf hydrangea cultivars were purchased from Bell Family Nursery, Aurora, OR and transplanted in field plots. Shading treatments included 0% (full sun), 30%, 60% and 90% shade. Disease indices were assessed for leaf spot using a 0-5 index scale on September 17, 2007. Shading treatments significantly (P = 0.0003) affected the disease indices. In general, increasing shade decreased disease severity of leaf spot. Because of the significant (P = 0.0380) interaction between shading and cultivar treatments, comparisons of disease indices among cultivars were conducted in each shading treatment. The results showed that the disease indices were not significantly different among cultivars for the 60% (P = 0.2828) and 90% (P = 0.4348) shading treatments. However, significant differences in disease indices were detected among cultivars in 30% shading (P = 0.0053) and full-sun (P = 0.0001) treatments. 'Fasan', 'Blue Deckle' and 'Lilacina' had significantly lower disease severities than 'Miranda' and 'Pretty Maiden', whereas 'Sister Theresa' was intermediate in both 30% shading and full sun. The present results provide knowledge in the disease management and resistance screening for hydrangea leaf spot.

yr. From the shortwave data, we found no statistically significant periods. Both periods are further supported by harmonic fits and data folding. We discuss the possible implications of these periodic fluctuations, specifically in regards to pulsation, convection, and binarity.
