Neutron stars are composed of the densest form of matter known to exist in our Universe, the composition and properties of which are still theoretically uncertain. Measurements of the masses or radii ...of these objects can strongly constrain the neutron star matter equation of state and rule out theoretical models of their composition. The observed range of neutron star masses, however, has hitherto been too narrow to rule out many predictions of 'exotic' non-nucleonic components. The Shapiro delay is a general-relativistic increase in light travel time through the curved space-time near a massive body. For highly inclined (nearly edge-on) binary millisecond radio pulsar systems, this effect allows us to infer the masses of both the neutron star and its binary companion to high precision. Here we present radio timing observations of the binary millisecond pulsar J1614-2230 that show a strong Shapiro delay signature. We calculate the pulsar mass to be (1.97 ± 0.04)M , which rules out almost all currently proposed hyperon or boson condensate equations of state (M , solar mass). Quark matter can support a star this massive only if the quarks are strongly interacting and are therefore not 'free' quarks.

Radio pulsars with millisecond spin periods are thought to have been spun up by the transfer of matter and angular momentum from a low-mass companion star during an x-ray-emitting phase. The spin ...periods of the neutron stars in several such low-mass x-ray binary (LMXB) systems have been shown to be in the millisecond regime, but no radio pulsations have been detected. Here we report on detection and follow-up observations of a nearby radio millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a circular binary orbit with an optically identified companion star. Optical observations indicate that an accretion disk was present in this system within the past decade. Our optical data show no evidence that one exists today, suggesting that the radio MSP has turned on after a recent LMXB phase.
We report the first discovery of a fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 20200125A, by the Green Bank Northern Celestial Cap (GBNCC) Pulsar Survey conducted with the Green Bank Telescope at 350 MHz. FRB ...20200125A was detected at a Galactic latitude of 58 43 with a dispersion measure of 179 pc cm3, while electron density models predict a maximum Galactic contribution of 25 pc cm3 along this line of sight. Moreover, no apparent Galactic foreground sources of ionized gas that could account for the excess DM are visible in multiwavelength surveys of this region. This argues that the source is extragalactic. The maximum redshift for the host galaxy is zmax = 0.17, corresponding to a maximum comoving distance of approximately 750 Mpc. The measured peak flux density for FRB 20200125A is 0.37 Jy, and we measure a pulse width of 3.7 ms, consistent with the distribution of FRB widths observed at higher frequencies. Based on this detection and assuming a Euclidean flux density distribution of FRBs, we calculate an all-sky rate at 350 MHz of FRBs sky−1 day−1 above a peak flux density of 0.42 Jy for an unscattered pulse having an intrinsic width of 5 ms, consistent with rates reported at higher frequencies, albeit with large uncertainties. Given the recent improvements in our single-pulse search pipeline, we also revisit the GBNCC survey sensitivity to various burst properties. Finally, we find no evidence of strong interstellar scattering in FRB 20200125A, adding to the growing evidence that some FRBs have circumburst environments where free-free absorption and scattering are not significant.

Background
The incidence of acute pancreatitis has increased sharply in many European countries and the USA in recent years.
Aim
To establish trends in incidence and mortality for acute ...pancreatitis in Wales, UK, and to assess how incidence may be linked to factors including social deprivation, seasonal effects and alcohol consumption.
Methods
Use of record linked inpatient, mortality and primary care data for 10 589 hospitalised cases of acute pancreatitis between 1999 and 2010.
Results
The incidence of acute pancreatitis was 30.0 per 100 000 population overall, mortality was 6.4% at 60 days. Incidence increased significantly from 27.6 per 100 000 in 1999 to 36.4 in 2010 (average annual increase = 2.7% per year), there was little trend in mortality (0.2% average annual reduction). The largest increases in incidence were among women aged <35 years (7.9% per year) and men aged 35–44 (5.7%) and 45–54 (5.3%). Incidence was 1.9 times higher among the most deprived quintile of patients compared with the most affluent (3.9 times higher for alcoholic acute pancreatitis and 1.5 for gallstone acute pancreatitis). Acute pancreatitis was increased significantly during the Christmas and New Year weeks by 48% (95% CI = 24–77%) for alcoholic aetiology, but not for gallstone aetiology (9%). Alcoholic admissions were increased with higher consumption of spirits and beer, but not wine.
Conclusions
The study shows an elevated rate of alcoholic acute pancreatitis during the Christmas and New Year period. Acute pancreatitis continues to rise, most rapidly for young women, while alcoholic acute pancreatitis is linked strongly with social deprivation.

Abstract We have searched for radio pulsations toward 49 Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) 1FGL Catalog γ -ray sources using the Green Bank Telescope at 350 MHz. We detected 18 millisecond pulsars ...(MSPs) in blind searches of the data; 10 of these were discoveries unique to our survey. 16 are binaries, with eight having short orbital periods P B < 1 day. No radio pulsations from young pulsars were detected, although three targets are coincident with apparently radio-quiet γ -ray pulsars discovered in LAT data. Here, we give an overview of the survey and present radio and γ -ray timing results for the 10 MSPs discovered. These include the only isolated MSP discovered in our survey and six short- P B binary MSPs. Of these, three have very-low-mass companions ( M c ≪ 0.1 M ⊙ ) and hence belong to the class of black widow pulsars. Two have more massive, nondegenerate companions with extensive radio eclipses and orbitally modulated X-ray emission consistent with the redback class. Significant γ -ray pulsations have been detected from nine of the discoveries. This survey and similar efforts suggest that the majority of Galactic γ -ray sources at high Galactic latitudes are either MSPs or relatively nearby nonrecycled pulsars, with the latter having on average a much smaller radio/ γ -ray beaming ratio as compared to MSPs. It also confirms that past surveys suffered from an observational bias against finding short- P B MSP systems.
We present the first Fermi Space Telescope Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) catalog of 4,144 terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs), detected since launch in 11 July 2008 through 31 July 2016. We discuss ...the updates and improvements to the triggered data and off‐line search algorithms, comparing this improved detection rate of ∼800 TGFs per year with event rates from previously published TGF catalogs from other missions. A Bayesian block algorithm calculated the temporal and spectral properties of the TGFs, revealing a delay between the hard (>300 keV) and soft (≤300 keV) photons of around 27 μs. Detector count rates of “low‐fluence” events were found to have average rates exceeding 150 kHz. Searching the World‐Wide Lightning Location Network data for radio sferics within ±5 min of each TGF revealed a clean sample of 1,314 World‐Wide Lightning Location Network locations, which were used to to accurately locate TGF‐producing storms. It also revealed lightning and storm activity for specific regions, as well as seasonal and daily variations of global lightning patterns. Correcting for the orbit of Fermi, we quantitatively find a marginal excess of TGFs being produced from storms over land near oceans (i.e., narrow isthmuses and small islands). No difference was observed between the duration of TGFs over the ocean and land. The distribution of TGFs at a given local solar time for predefined American, Asian, and African regions were confirmed to correlate well with known regional lightning rates.

Abstract Nutrient transporters and ABC efflux pumps at the blood–brain barrier are major determinants of drug penetration into the brain. Immunohistochemical analysis of transporter subcellular ...localization is challenging due to the close apposition of the luminal and abluminal microvessel plasma membranes. We employed in vivo perfusion of biotinylation reagent through rat brain microvessels to domain-specifically label proteins exposed on the microvessel luminal surface. Using this approach, we analyzed the luminal/abluminal localization of a number of blood–brain barrier transporters identified by quantitative PCR profiling as being highly expressed and enriched in rat brain endothelial cells compared with whole brain. We also examined the apical/basal–lateral distribution of transporters in the choroid plexus, a secondary site for transport of nutrients between the blood and CNS. We detected P-glycoprotein (Pgp) (Abcb1), ATP-binding cassette (Abc) g2, multidrug resistance protein (Mrp) 4 (Abcc4), glucose transporter 1 (Glut1) (Slc2a1), Lat1 (Slc7a5), and monocarboxylate transporter-1 (Mct1) (Slc16a1) on the luminal surface of rat cerebral microvessels by both immunofluorescence staining and Western blotting of in vivo biotinylated proteins. Mrp1 (Abcc1) appeared primarily abluminal by immunofluorescence staining, and was barely detectable in the biotinylated protein fraction. Organic anion transporter (Oat) 3 (Slc22a8), organic anion transporter polypeptide (Oatp) 2b1 (Slco2b1, Oatpb), and Mrp5 (Abcc5) were not detected on the luminal surface using either method, while Oatp1a4 (Slco1a4, Oatp2) appeared to partially localize to the microvessel lumen by immunofluorescence staining, but was not detected in the biotinylated protein fraction by Western blotting. Lat1, Mrp1 and Mrp4 were detected on the basal–lateral surface of lateral ventricle choroid plexus epithelial cells. Mrp5, Oct3 and Oatp2b1 (Oatpb) were detected in the ependymal cells lining the ventricle. We did not detect Pgp expression in choroid plexus by immunofluorescence staining. In vivo biotinylation provides a method for domain-specific labeling of luminal surface proteins within the capillaries of the blood–brain barrier, allowing for biochemical analysis of protein localization and facilitating optical discrimination of the luminal and abluminal endothelial surfaces.
There are few African American students in medical school, and even fewer are choosing academic surgical careers. The objective of this study is to provide insight into what barriers URM students ...perceive when considering a career in academic surgery.
This qualitative, descriptive study was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania. Sixteen African American students with an interest in surgery were recruited to participate in the study. The outcomes reported are themes of how participants perceive the challenges of pursuing an academic surgical career.
Barriers to pursuing a career in academic surgery cited by students included lifestyle concerns, financial pressures, having to work in a predominantly white environment, lack of mentorship, feelings of having to prove oneself, stressful environments and concerns of being a minority female in surgery.
These study findings indicate that the persistent dearth of African-Americans in academic surgery is likely multi-factorial. Some ways surgical leadership can begin addressing these issues is through establishment of formal mentorship programs, ensuring non-discriminatory recruiting processes, having explicit goals of improving diversity and supporting pipeline programs.

Gravitationally bound three-body systems have been studied for hundreds of years and are common in our Galaxy. They show complex orbital interactions, which can constrain the compositions, masses and ...interior structures of the bodies and test theories of gravity, if sufficiently precise measurements are available. A triple system containing a radio pulsar could provide such measurements, but the only previously known such system, PSR B1620-26 (refs 7, 8; with a millisecond pulsar, a white dwarf, and a planetary-mass object in an orbit of several decades), shows only weak interactions. Here we report precision timing and multiwavelength observations of PSR J0337+1715, a millisecond pulsar in a hierarchical triple system with two other stars. Strong gravitational interactions are apparent and provide the masses of the pulsar MSymbol: see text(1.4378(13), where MSymbol: see textis the solar mass and the parentheses contain the uncertainty in the final decimal places) and the two white dwarf companions (0.19751(15)MSymbol: see text and 0.4101(3))MSymbol: see text, as well as the inclinations of the orbits (both about 39.2°). The unexpectedly coplanar and nearly circular orbits indicate a complex and exotic evolutionary past that differs from those of known stellar systems. The gravitational field of the outer white dwarf strongly accelerates the inner binary containing the neutron star, and the system will thus provide an ideal laboratory in which to test the strong equivalence principle of general relativity.
