We have previously reported the in vitro hypocholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of Alcalase-generated lupin protein hydrolysate (LPH). Given that lipoprotein deposition, ...oxidative stress, and inflammation are the main components of atherogenesis, we characterized the LPH composition, in silico identified LPH–peptides with activities related to atherosclerosis, and evaluated the in vivo LPH effects on atherosclerosis risk factors in a mouse model of atherosclerosis. After 15 min of Alcalase hydrolysis, peptides smaller than 8 kDa were obtained, and 259 peptides out of 278 peptides found showed biological activities related to atherosclerosis risk factors. Furthermore, LPH administration for 12 weeks reduced the plasma lipids, as well as the cardiovascular and atherogenic risk indexes. LPH also increased the total antioxidant capacity, decreased endothelial permeability, inflammatory response, and atherogenic markers. Therefore, this study describes for the first time that LPH prevents the early stages of atherosclerosis.
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the most important cause of liver disease worldwide. It is characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver and is closely associated with ...abdominal obesity. In addition, oxidative stress and inflammation are significant features involved in MAFLD. Recently, our group demonstrated that lupin protein hydrolysates (LPHs) had lipid lowering, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. Sixty male mice fed with a Western diet were intragastrically treated with LPHs (or vehicle) for 12 weeks. Liver and adipose tissue lipid accumulation and hepatic inflammatory and oxidant status were evaluated. A significant decrease in steatosis was observed in LPHs-treated mice, which presented a decreased gene expression of CD36 and LDL-R, crucial markers in MAFLD. In addition, LPHs increased the hepatic total antioxidant capacity and reduced the hepatic inflammatory status. Moreover, LPHs-treated mice showed a significant reduction in abdominal adiposity. This is the first study to show that the supplementation with LPHs markedly ameliorates the generation of the steatotic liver caused by the intake of a Western diet and reduces abdominal obesity in ApoE−/− mice. Future clinical trials should shed light on the effects of LPHs on MAFLD.
The digenetic community of 40 green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) was investigated at Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica. In total, 24,270 trematodes belonging to 29 species and 6 families including ...Clinostomidae 1, Microscaphidiidae 5, Paramphistomidae 2, Pronocephalidae 15, Rhytidodidae 2, and Spirorchiidae 4 were recorded from chelonians examined. Turtles harbored a mean of 7.63 ± 3.5 SD species. Only 3 species, i.e., Learedius learedi, Microscaphidium reticulare, and Pyelosomum cochlear, infected more than 50% of the hosts sampled. Learedius learedi was the most prevalent (97.5%) and the second most abundant species with a mean of 25.6 ± 21.6 SD. Only 1 core species, M. reticulare, was recovered from the gastrointestinal tract; it was the most abundant parasite, with a mean intensity of 477 ± 1,180 SD, and the second most prevalent (77.5%). Diversity values ranged from 0.10 to 2.10, with a mean of 1.00 ± 0.43 SD for the total component community and from 0.10 to 1.84, with a mean of 0.79 ± 0.41 SD, for the gastrointestinal component community. Species richness was the highest recorded from a sea turtle species. All digenetic species were recorded from Costa Rica for the first time. This represents the first report on the helminth community of the green turtle.
Figurate skin eruptions are fixed or migratory lesions, which is clinically characterized by annular circinate, arcuate, targetoid or polycyclic plaque. Although most skin lesions typical annular are ...dermatophytosis (ringworm), general practitioners and especially pediatricians have to consider other possible diagnoses. Tinea corporis often can be diagnosed based on a direct positive test with potassium hydroxide. Topical and systemic antifungal are usually curative. Pityriasis rosea is characterized by small lesions, light erythematosus colored, distributed along the lines of division of the skin. Treatment is symptomatic. Granuloma annulare is characterized by annular plaques with non-squamous indurated edges, usually in the extremities. Half of the cases resolve spontaneously within two years. Hansen’s disease may present with similar body ringworm plates by submitting one or more annular lesions. Urticaria, that may affect 10 to 20 percent of the population, is presented with evanescent annular plates with no scales. The subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus may occur in a ring on sun-exposed areas as well as Papulosquamous form. Erythema annulare centrifugum typically presents annular shaped scaly patches on the edges of the erythematous plaques. In all cases both findings, clinical and histopathological should be considered when it comes to annular lesions which are frequently seen in daily routine.

Mycobacteria are aerobic, non-spore forming, gram positive, acid-fast bacilli, which affect skin, subcutaneous tissue, and other organs and systems. Mycobacterium fortuitum produces cellulitis, ...abscesses, papules-pustules, nodules and ulcers with serosanguinolent, purulent material, and subcutaneous necrosis. A 61-year-old woman, presents a case of two months of evolution that begins with reddish grain from an insect sting. After immersion in the Mexican Sea, it worsens, increases in quantity, is blistered and has brownish secretion; Physical examination shows erythematous plaque, with punctate orifices with hematic and meliceric crusts; Pustules and satellite papules, on the anterior aspect of the right leg. Histopathology: Suppurative dermal granulomas, centered by acute leukocyte infiltrate, with liquefactive tissue necrosis, surrounded by chronic inflammation with macrophages, plasma cells, lymphocytes, multinucleated giant cells. The first skin culture returns negative; in the second skin culture, fast-growing, non-pigmented atypical mycobacteria. Molecular detection is performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction: Mycobacterium fortuitum. Treatment with Ciprofloxacin 500 mg every 12 hours, with resolution of the table to the eighth month. A case of cutaneous infection by Mycobacterium fortuitum, related to the immersion in the sea and corals, whose diagnostic process has been difficult and was achieved by techniques of advanced molecular biology.
Genital herpes is the most common cause of ulcers in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It is presented as a single or multiple, painful injury, accompanied by bilateral, also painful, ...lymphadenopathy. In immunocompromised patients, such as those affected by HIV, Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infections have a variety of clinical manifestations; they may be located, scattered or atypical. In addition, lesions may be more extensive and persistent than HIV-negative patients. We present two cases of immunocompromised patients with perianal herpetic ulcers, one HIV carrier, and the other with leukopenia caused by visceral Leishmaniasis.

The term dermatoporosis proposed by Kaya and Saurat in 2007, relates to the failure and chronic skin fragility due to aging. The first clinical manifestations appear by the age of 60, but fully ...developed signs of disease are evident among people between the ages of 70 and 90; affecting 1 in 3 people, with a prevalence of 32%. Typical manifestations of dermatoporosis are skin atrophy, senile purpura, stellate scars, skin lacerations, and dissecting hematomas. Injuries can be classified into primary and secondary. The primary are related to the timing of aging and photoaging; while secondary lesions are associated with chronic use of topical or systemic corticosteroids. The lesions usually appear on sun-exposed areas. They indicate the fourth stage. We report a case of a 74- year- old woman with deep dissecting extremity hematomas.
Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a rare genodermatosis whose main feature is a genetic predisposition to persistent skin infection by different serotypes of human papillomavirus (HPV). In ...recent years, an EV-like syndrome has been described in patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity, including patients with HIV. We report the case of a teenage female patient with congenital infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which has similar lesions to classical EV.
