Energy supply is becoming an important issue and electricity system reliability is sometimes difficult to ensure. Energy efficiency in buildings in use is a key element in the search for solutions to ...current energy problems. Many buildings in use can improve their energy consumption performance by implementing simple energy efficiency measures (EEM) in their facilities. After carrying out such actions, savings may be continued with just minimal maintenance. An additional key phase in classical energy studies is to define EEM to be implemented by the intervention of an external energy expert, since resident staff may not have the time, sufficient knowledge, nor experience in EEM. The energy expert intervention is of short duration (several days), and the total cost of the action may be moderate. In this paper, authors present several real examples implemented in three buildings on the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) campus after an external energy expert review. Savings, certified using real measured consumption before and after the action, represent around 10% of the total annual energy consumption in the buildings, and the payback of the EEM is approximately a few months.
The development of microgrids is of great interest to facilitate the integration of distributed generation in electricity networks, improving the sustainability of energy production. Microgrids in DC ...(DC-MG) provide advantages for the use of some types of renewable generation and energy storage systems, such as batteries. In this article, a possible practical implementation of an isolated DC-MG for residential use with a cooperative operation of the different nodes is proposed. The main criterion is to achieve a very simple design with only primary control in a residential area. This application achieves a simple system, with low implementation costs, in which each user has autonomy but benefits from the support of the other users connected to the microgrid, which improves its reliability. The description of the elements necessary to create this cooperative system is one of the contributions of the work. Another important contribution is the analysis of the operation of the microgrid as a whole, where each node can be, arbitrarily, a consumer or an energy generator. The proposed structures could promote the use of small distributed generation and energy storage systems as the basis for a new paradigm of a more sustainable electricity grid of the future.
•RCCBs are used to provide protection against indirect contacts.•Nuisance tripping of RCCBs often occur in circuits that feed electronic loads.•Phase currents suffer high peak values that may also ...trip the circuit breaker.•Voltage disturbances in circuits feeding electronic loads cause RCCBs to trip.
Residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) are often used to provide protection against indirect contacts in a grounded electrical installation. However, there are situations where the use of RCCBs presents certain problems. In circuits that feed electronic loads RCCBs often cause nuisance tripping. This article discusses the reasons why RCCBs trip in this type of circuit based on a previous case studied by the authors at ‘La Fe’ hospital in Valencia (Spain) and several tests performed in a power flexible laboratory. A theoretical circuit used to explain the phenomena is also presented.
•Residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) are used to provide protection against indirect contacts.•Nuisance tripping of RCCBs sometimes become a serious problem.•Low-order harmonics with small ...values it is improbable that can explain the tripping of an RCCB.•Strong perturbations in the supply voltages produce leakage currents and cause RCCBs to trip.
Residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) are often used to provide protection against indirect contacts in a grounded electrical installation. However, there are situations where the use of RCCBs presents certain problems. In some installations, tripping may occur for no apparent reason. Furthermore, it is very laborious and difficult to find the cause of such nuisance tripping in RCCBs. This article presents a case studied by the authors in the La Fe Hospital in Valencia (Spain), where the nuisance tripping of RCCBs became a serious problem. The methodology followed to find the causes and the solutions adopted are described.
In rural areas or in isolated communities in developing countries it is increasingly common to install micro-renewable sources, such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, by residential consumers without ...access to the utility distribution network. The reliability of the supply provided by these stand-alone generators is a key issue when designing the PV system. The proper system sizing for a minimum level of reliability avoids unacceptable continuity of supply (undersized system) and unnecessary costs (oversized system). This paper presents a method for the accurate sizing of stand-alone photovoltaic (SAPV) residential generation systems for a pre-established reliability level. The proposed method is based on the application of a sequential random Monte Carlo simulation to the system model. Uncertainties of solar radiation, energy demand, and component failures are simultaneously considered. The results of the case study facilitate the sizing of the main energy elements (solar panels and battery) depending on the required level of reliability, taking into account the uncertainties that affect this type of facility. The analysis carried out demonstrates that deterministic designs of SAPV systems based on average demand and radiation values or the average number of consecutive cloudy days can lead to inadequate levels of continuity of supply.
Purpose: Although knowledge and its management is, and has been, studied in depth, particularly since the 90’s decade of the past century, especially for the strategic management, innovation, trade, ...or business administration, there are still many questions on how it articulates or transfers and the barriers to its management, especially when we talk about internal tactical activities that affect staff that we could call "offices", such as maintenance and industrial assembly or exploitation and conduction of the facilities. Because of the peculiarities normally seen in this kind of activity in the industrial companies, the knowledge of these people is strongly based on their experience (strong tacit component), difficult to measure and articulate, and on many occasions, however, this rupture of information-knowledge, can represent a high cost for the company (often assumed to be something inevitable) due to the increase in production and service downtime, loss of efficiency, or tuning time of new staff to these areas.Design/methodology/approach: After a description of the State of the art and the basic principles of knowledge management, a qualitative study in an industrial company has been carried out, within the areas of operation and maintenance, in order to know the barriers and facilitators that such involved personnel finds in order to achieve an adequate transmission and use of that knowledge.Findings and Originality/value: Learn about barriers, facilitators and impact that offers the knowledge management in the areas of industrial maintenance, especially among professionals in offices which operate with a high degree of tacit knowledge and with a heavy dependence on the company on these professionals.Research limitations/implications: Those characteristics of a qualitative study in a particular area and within a geographical area, although it can be extrapolated to other types of companies and regional areas.Practical implications: Learn about the barriers and facilitators, facilitates the way in which must develop a model of knowledge management in the area of industrial maintenance, which results in the improvement of the efficiency of the service and decreases the dependence of the company in this strategic area.Social implications: Union and improvement of the Working Group in industrial maintenance, greater security in critical decision-making, encourage shared knowledge.Originality/value: This article explores on the principles of the management of knowledge in an area of the company such as industrial maintenance, where there are no full proposals to guide on the factors to take into account for the establishment of a model, that tends to restrict the high tacit knowledge that exists within the working groups of the maintenance engineering, as well as the factors influencing its proper development.
