Upon stimulation, plants elicit electrical signals that can travel within a cellular network analogous to the animal nervous system. It is well-known that in the human brain, voltage changes in ...certain regions result from concerted electrical activity which, in the form of action potentials (APs), travels within nerve-cell arrays. Electro- and magnetophysiological techniques like electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, and magnetic resonance imaging are used to record this activity and to diagnose disorders. Here we demonstrate that APs in a multicellular plant system produce measurable magnetic fields. Using atomic optically pumped magnetometers, biomagnetism associated with electrical activity in the carnivorous Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, was recorded. Action potentials were induced by heat stimulation and detected both electrically and magnetically. Furthermore, the thermal properties of ion channels underlying the AP were studied. Beyond proof of principle, our findings pave the way to understanding the molecular basis of biomagnetism in living plants. In the future, magnetometry may be used to study long-distance electrical signaling in a variety of plant species, and to develop noninvasive diagnostics of plant stress and disease.
Recent developments in performance and practicality of optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have enabled new capabilities in non-invasive brain function mapping through magnetoencephalography. In ...particular, the lack of cryogenic operating conditions allows for more flexible placement of sensor heads closer to the brain, leading to improved spatial resolution and source localisation capabilities. Through recording visually evoked brain fields (VEFs), we demonstrate that the closer sensor proximity can be exploited to improve temporal resolution. We use OPMs, and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) for reference, to measure brain responses to flash and pattern reversal stimuli. We find highly reproducible signals with consistency across multiple participants, stimulus paradigms and sensor modalities. The temporal resolution advantage of OPMs is manifest in a twofold improvement, compared to SQUIDs. The capability for improved spatio-temporal signal tracing is illustrated by simultaneous vector recordings of VEFs in the primary and associative visual cortex, where a time lag on the order of 10-20 ms is consistently found. This paves the way for further spatio-temporal studies of neurophysiological signal tracking in visual stimulus processing, and other brain responses, with potentially far-reaching consequences for time-critical mapping of functionality in healthy and pathological brains.
In the high spin–orbit-coupled Sr2IrO4, the high sensitivity of the ground state to the details of the local lattice structure shows a large potential for the manipulation of the functional ...properties by inducing local lattice distortions. We use epitaxial strain to modify the Ir–O bond geometry in Sr2IrO4 and perform momentum-dependent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the metal and at the ligand sites to unveil the response of the low-energy elementary excitations. We observe that the pseudospin-wave dispersion for tensile-strained Sr2IrO4 films displays large softening along the h,0 direction, while along the h,h direction it shows hardening. This evolution reveals a renormalization of the magnetic interactions caused by a strain-driven cross-over from anisotropic to isotropic interactions between the magnetic moments. Moreover, we detect dispersive electron–hole pair excitations which shift to lower (higher) energies upon compressive (tensile) strain, manifesting a reduction (increase) in the size of the charge gap. This behavior shows an intimate coupling between charge excitations and lattice distortions in Sr2IrO4, originating from the modified hopping elements between the t2g orbitals. Our work highlights the central role played by the lattice degrees of freedom in determining both the pseudospin and charge excitations of Sr2IrO4 and provides valuable information toward the control of the ground state of complex oxides in the presence of high spin–orbit coupling.
In this work, we present a new chemical route to synthesize Tm2Mn2O7 pyrochlore, which a compound that is thermodynamically unstable at ambient pressure. Differently from the reported in the past ...high-pressure synthesis of the same compound applying oxides as starting materials, we have obtained a pure Tm2Mn2O7 phase by a converting TmMnO3 at 1100 °C and an oxygen pressure of 1300 bar. The studies of Tm2Mn2O7 performed by a high-resolution neutron powder diffraction have shown that a pure pyrochlore cubic phase Tm2Mn2O7 (space group Fd3¯m) have been obtained. Upon cooling below 25 K, there is a transition to a ferromagnetically (FM) ordered phase observed with an additional antiferromagnetic (AFM) canting, suggesting a lowering of the initial cubic crystal symmetry. The magnetic transition is accompanied by a small but very visible magnetostriction effect. Using symmetry analysis, we have found a solution for the AFM structure in the maximal Shubnikov subgroup I41/am′d′.

In non-resonant scattering condition, the cross-section ...is strongly dominated by lattice vibrations (phonons). However, it is possible to probe additional degrees of freedom such as magnetic fluctuations that are strongly coupled to the phonons. The IXS spectrum of the coupled system contains not only the phonon dispersion but also the so far undetected magnetic correlation function. Here we report the observation of strong magnon–phonon coupling in LiCrO
2
that enables the measurement of magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone via IXS. We find electromagnon excitations and electric dipole active two-magnon excitations in the magnetically ordered phase and heavily damped electromagnons in the paramagnetic phase of LiCrO
2
. We predict that several (frustrated) magnets with dominant direct exchange and non-collinear magnetism show surprisingly large IXS cross-section for magnons and multi-magnon processes.
By measuring the spin precession frequencies of polarized 129Xe and 3He, a new upper limit on the 129Xe atomic electric dipole moment (EDM) \({d}_{\text{A}}\left({}^{129}\mathrm{X}\mathrm{e}\right)\) ...was reported in Sachdev et al (2019 Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 143003). Here, we propose a new evaluation method based on global phase fitting (GPF) for analyzing the continuous phase development of the 3He–129Xe comagnetometer signal. The Cramer–Rao lower bound on the 129Xe EDM for the GPF method is theoretically derived and shows the potential benefit of our new approach. The robustness of the GPF method is verified with Monte-Carlo studies. By optimizing the analysis parameters and adding data that could not be analyzed with the former method, we obtain a result of \({d}_{\text{A}}\left({}^{129}\mathrm{X}\mathrm{e}\right)=\left1.1{\pm}3.6\enspace \left(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t}\right){\pm}2.0\enspace \left(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\right)\right{\times}1{0}^{-28}\enspace \text{e}\enspace \mathrm{c}\mathrm{m}\) in an unblinded analysis. For the systematic uncertainty analyses, we adopted all methods from the aforementioned PRL publication except the comagnetometer phase drift, which can be omitted using the GPF method. The updated null result can be interpreted as a new upper limit of \(\vert {d}_{\text{A}}\left({}^{129}\mathrm{X}\mathrm{e}\right)\vert {< }8.3\enspace {\times}1{0}^{-28}\enspace \text{e}\enspace \mathrm{c}\mathrm{m}\) at the 95% C.L.
