Neutrinos are one of the most promising messengers for signals of new physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). On the theoretical side, their elusive nature, combined with their unknown mass ...mechanism, seems to indicate that the neutrino sector is indeed opening a window to new physics. On the experimental side, several long-standing anomalies have been reported in the past decades, providing a strong motivation to thoroughly test the standard three-neutrino oscillation paradigm. In this Snowmass21 white paper, we explore the potential of current and future neutrino experiments to explore BSM effects on neutrino flavor during the next decade.

We investigate the ability of the short baseline neutrino (SBN) experimental program at Fermilab to test the globally-allowed (3+N) sterile neutrino oscillation parameter space. We explicitly ...consider the globally-allowed parameter space for the (3+1), (3+2), and (3+3) sterile neutrino oscillation scenarios. We find that SBN can probe with 5σ sensitivity more than 85%, 95% and 55% of the parameter space currently allowed at 99% confidence level for the (3+1), (3+2) and (3+3) scenarios, respectively, with the (3+N) allowed space used in these studies closely resembling that of previous studies J. M. Conrad, C. M. Ignarra, G. Karagiorgi, M. H. Shaevitz, and J. Spitz, Adv. High Energy Phys. 2013, 1 (2013)., calculated using the same methodology. In the case of the (3+2) and (3+3) scenarios, CP-violating phases appear in the oscillation probability terms, leading to observable differences in the appearance probabilities of neutrinos and antineutrinos. We explore SBN’s sensitivity to those phases for the (3+2) scenario through the currently planned neutrino beam running, and investigate potential improvements through additional antineutrino beam running. We show that, if antineutrino exposure is considered, for maximal values of the (3+2) CP-violating phase ϕ54, SBN could be the first experiment to directly observe ∼2σ hints of CP violation associated with an extended lepton sector.
MicroRNA21 (MIR21) abundance in porcine oocytes and cumulus cells increases during in vitro maturation. The mechanism by which MIR21 regulates oocyte maturation and the effect on the developmental ...competence of subsequent embryos remains unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the function of MIR21 during porcine oocyte maturation and its effect on embryonic development. Treatment with peptide nucleic acid MIR21 inhibitor (MIR21‐PNA), designed to specifically bind to and prevent MIR21 activity during in vitro oocyte maturation, decreased cumulus cell expansion, and the oocyte ability to achieve metaphase II maturation stage when compared to control groups. Following parthenogenetic activation, the cleavage rate at 48 h in the MIR21‐PNA group was decreased (p ≤ 0.03) relative to the control groups. Additionally, liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry (LC‐MS/MS) of oocyte and cumulus cell total protein following MIR21‐PNA treatment during in vitro maturation identified changes in signaling pathways with primary involvement of glucose metabolism (GM) pathways. Furthermore, there was no difference (p = 0.21) in oocyte maturation of control and MIR21‐PNA treated oocytes when cultured in pyruvate lacking medium. Finally, MIR21‐PNA treatment decreased (p = 0.04) glutathione and increased (p = 0.07) reactive oxygen species production in the oocyte. These data suggest that MIR21 influences porcine oocyte maturation by regulating GM pathways in the cumulus–oocyte complex.
Abstract
Although pork producers typically aim to optimize growth rates, occasionally it is necessary to slow growth, such as when harvest facility capacity is limited. In finishing pigs, numerous ...dietary strategies can be used to slow growth so pigs are at optimal slaughter body weights when harvest facility capacity and/or access is restored. However, the impact of these diets on pork carcass quality is largely unknown. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of dietary strategies to slow growth in late finishing pigs and evaluate their effects on carcass composition and pork quality. Mixed-sex pigs (n = 897; 125 ± 2 kg BW) were randomly allotted across 48 pens and assigned to 1 of 6 dietary treatments (n = 8 pens/treatment): (1) Control diet representative of a typical finisher diet (CON); (2) diet containing 3% calcium chloride (CaCl2); (3) diet containing 97% corn and no soybean meal (Corn); (4) diet deficient in isoleucine (LowIle); (5) diet containing 15% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from soybean hulls (15% NDF); and (6) diet containing 20% NDF from soybean hulls (20% NDF). Over 42 d, pen body weights and feed disappearance were collected. Pigs were harvested in 3 groups (14, 28, and 42 d on feed) and carcass data collected. From the harvest group, 1 loin was collected from 120 randomly selected carcasses (20 loins/treatment) to evaluate pork quality traits. Overall, ADG was reduced in CaCl2, Corn, and 20% NDF pigs compared with CON pigs (P < 0.001). However, ADFI was only reduced in CaCl2 and 20% NDF pigs compared with CON (P < 0.001). Feed efficiency was reduced in CaCl2 and Corn pigs compared with CON (P < 0.001). Hot carcass weights were reduced in CaCl2 pigs at all harvest dates (P < 0.001) and were reduced in Corn and 20% NDF pigs at days 28 and 42 compared with CON pigs (P < 0.001). In general, CaCl2 and 20% NDF diets resulted in leaner carcasses, whereas the Corn diet increased backfat by 42 d on test (P < 0.05). Loin pH was reduced and star probe increased in CaCl2 pigs compared with CON pigs (P < 0.05); no treatments differed from CON pigs regarding drip loss, cook loss, color, firmness, or marbling (P ≥ 0.117). Overall, these data indicate that several dietary strategies can slow finishing pig growth without evidence of behavioral vices. However, changes to carcass composition and quality were also observed, indicating quality should be taken into consideration when choosing diets to slow growth.
Objectives were to investigate the effects of prolonged gestational and/or postnatal heat stress on performance and carcass composition of market weight pigs. Pregnant gilts were exposed to ...gestational heat stress (GHS, 28°C to 34°C, diurnal) or thermal neutral (18°C to 22°C, diurnal) conditions during the entire gestation or during the first or second half of gestation. At 14 wk of age (58 ± 5 kg), barrows were housed in heat stress (32°C, HS) or thermal neutral (21°C, TN) conditions. Feed intake and BW were recorded weekly, and body temperature parameters were monitored twice weekly until slaughter (109 ± 5 kg). Organs were removed and weighed, and loin eye area (LEA) and back fat thickness (BF) were measured after carcass chilling. Carcass sides were separated into lean, separable fat, bone, and skin components and were weighed. Moisture, lipid, and protein content were determined in the LM at the 10th rib. Data were analyzed using a split plot with random effect of dam nested within gestational treatment. Carcass measurements included HCW as a covariate to control for weight. Planned orthogonal contrast statements were used to evaluate the overall effect of GHS in the first half, second half, or any part of gestation. Gestational heat stress did not alter postnatal performance or most body temperature parameters (P > 0.10). However, ADFI in the finishing period was increased (P < 0.05) in response to GHS, particularly in pigs receiving GHS in the first half of gestation. Gestational heat stress during the first half of gestation decreased head weight as a percent of BW (P = 0.02), whereas GHS in the second half of gestation decreased bone weight as a percent of BW (P = 0.02). Heat stress reduced ADG, BW, and HCW (P < 0.0001). Lean tissue was increased in HS pigs on both a weight and percentage basis (P < 0.0001), but LEA was similar to TN carcasses (P = 0.38). Carcasses from HS barrows also had less carcass separable fat (P < 0.01) and tended to have less BF (P = 0.06) compared with those from TN barrows, even after controlling for HCW. However, percent intramuscular fat did not differ between treatments (P = 0.48). The LM from HS carcasses had a greater moisture to protein ratio (P = 0.04). HS barrows also had decreased heart (P < 0.001) and kidney (P < 0.0001) as a percent of BW compared with TN pigs. In summary, GHS may affect head and bone development, subsequently affecting carcass composition. Chronic HS during finishing results in longer times to reach market weight and a leaner carcass once market weight is achieved.
Abstract
Heat stress (HS) negatively impacts several swine production variables, including carcass fat quality and quantity. Pigs reared in HS have more adipose tissue than energetically predicted, ...explainable, in part, by HS-induced hyperinsulinemia. Study objectives were to evaluate insulin’s role in altering fat characteristics during HS via feeding insulin-sensitizing compounds. Forty crossbred barrows (113 ± 9 kg BW) were randomly assigned to one of five environment by diet treatments: 1) thermoneutral (TN) fed ad libitum (TNAL), 2) TN and pair-fed (TNPF), 3) HS fed ad libitum (HSAL), 4) HS fed ad libitum with sterculic oil (SO) supplementation (HSSO; 13 g/d), and 5) HS fed ad libitum with dietary chromium (Cr) supplementation (HSCr; 0.5 mg/d; Kemin Industries, Des Moines, IA). The study consisted of three experimental periods (P). During P0 (2 d), all pigs were exposed to TN conditions (23 ± 3 °C, 68 ± 10% RH) and fed ad libitum. During P1 (7 d), all pigs received their respective dietary supplements, were maintained in TN conditions, and fed ad libitum. During P2 (21 d), HSAL, HSSO, and HSCr pigs were fed ad libitum and exposed to cyclical HS conditions (28 to 33 °C, 58 ± 10% RH). The TNAL and TNPF pigs remained in TN conditions and were fed ad libitum or pair-fed to their HSAL counterparts. Rectal temperature (TR), respiration rate (RR), and skin temperature (TS) were obtained daily at 0600 and 1800 h. At 1800 h, HS exposed pigs had increased TR, RR, and TS relative to TNAL controls (1.13 °C, 48 bpm, and 3.51 °C, respectively; P < 0.01). During wk 2 and 3 of P2, HSSO pigs had increased 1800 h TR relative to HSAL and HSCr (~0.40 and ~0.42 °C, respectively; P ≤ 0.05). Heat stress decreased ADFI and ADG compared to TNAL pigs (2.24 vs. 3.28 and 0.63 vs. 1.09 kg/d, respectively; P < 0.01) and neither variable was affected by SO or Cr supplementation. Heat stress increased or tended to increase moisture content of abdominal (7.7 vs. 5.9%; P = 0.07) and inner s.c. (11.4 vs. 9.8%; P < 0.05) adipose depots compared to TNAL controls. Interestingly, TNPF pigs also had increased adipose tissue moisture content and this was most pronounced in the outer s.c. depot (15.0 vs. 12.2%; P < 0.01) compared to TNAL pigs. Heat stress had little or no effect on fatty acid composition of abdominal, inner, and outer s.c. adipose tissue depots. In summary, the negative effects of HS on fat quality do not appear to be fatty acid composition related, but may be explained by increased adipose tissue moisture content.

Heat stress is associated with death and other maladaptions including muscle dysfunction and impaired growth across species. Despite this common observation, the molecular effects leading to these ...pathologic changes remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which heat stress disrupted redox balance and initiated an inflammatory response in oxidative and glycolytic skeletal muscle. Female pigs (5-6/group) were subjected to thermoneutral (20 °C) or heat stress (35 °C) conditions for 1 or 3 days and the semitendinosus removed and dissected into red (STR) and white (STW) portions. After 1 day of heat stress, relative abundance of proteins modified by malondialdehyde, a measure of oxidative damage, was increased 2.5-fold (P < 0.05) compared with thermoneutral in the STR but not the STW, before returning to thermoneutral conditions following 3 days of heat stress. This corresponded with increased catalase and superoxide dismutase-1 gene expression (P < 0.05) and superoxide dismutase-1 protein abundance (P < 0.05) in the STR but not the STW. In the STR catalase and total superoxide dismutase activity were increased by ~30% and ~130%, respectively (P < 0.05), after 1 day of heat stress and returned to thermoneutral levels by day 3. One or 3 days of heat stress did not increase inflammatory signaling through the NF-κB pathway in the STR or STW. These data suggest that oxidative muscle is more susceptible to heat stress-mediated changes in redox balance than glycolytic muscle during chronic heat stress.
Abstract Dietary phosphorous is a necessary nutrient for bone development in pigs at all stages of its growing. Deficiencies in phosphorous decrease bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral ...density (BMD) and may be a causative of lameness. However, the normal range expected in whole body (WB) and individual bones for BMC and BMD in commercial pigs has been poorly defined. Therefore, our objectives were to 1) model normal WB bone density at multiple timepoints in wean to finish pigs, and 2) determine the extent to which individual bone (femur and 3rd metatarsal) BMC and BMD could predict WB BMC and BMD. Mixed sex pigs Camborough (1050) x 337, PIC were utilized and included freshly weaned ~21 d (n = 8), ~44 d of age (n = 24), ~84 d of age (n = 24) and ~154 d of age (n = 24). Pigs were individually penned. Excluding weaning age, at each age group pigs were randomly assigned to diets adequate, marginally deficient, or deficient in available phosphorus (avP) and fed for 3, 4, and 6 wk (age group 44, 84, 154, respectively). Within each age group, diets were formulated to meet nutrient and energy requirements except for avP and pigs fed ad libitum. On-test and off-test body weight (BW) and feed intake and gain to feed ratio were assessed for each age group. At the end of each feeding period, all pigs were euthanized and WB, femur (F) and 3rd metatarsal (M) BMC and BMD determined by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Data were analyzed using linear and generalized additive models that predicted response variables (BMC or BMD) as a function of BW or age. Only pigs fed adequate avP diets were used in the model fit. Pigs fed adequate avP diets increased BMD with age (0.22, 0.42, 0.84 and 1.10 g/cm2, days of age 21, 44, 84 and 154 respectively, P < 0.001). Within day of age 84, marginally and deficient avP diets reduced BMC and BMD by 21 to 41% (P = 0.002) and 12 to 25% (P = 0.006), respectively. Within day of age 154, marginally and deficient avP diets reduced BMC and BMD by 9% (P = 0.05) and 6 to 8% (P = 0.06), respectively. Body weight record and individual bone (F and M) BMC and BMD from pigs fed deficient avP diets were used to predict WB BMC and BMD and the mean square error of prediction was selected as a criterion to evaluate the ability of the models to detect these inadequately fed pigs. Using the selected models, pigs fed nutritionally deficient diets were detected due to 2- to 7-fold increase in MSE of predicted WBMD or WBMC compared with pigs fed adequate diets. These models can be used to assess bone development and strength in growing pigs and to infer the adequacy of avP level supplied in their diets.
