Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) were shown to have immunomodulatory activity and have been applied for treating immune-mediated disorders. We compared the homing and therapeutic action of ...cryopreserved subcutaneous adipose tissue (AT-MSCs) and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) in rats with trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis.
After colonoscopic detection of inflammation AT-MSCs or BM-MSCs were injected intraperitoneally. Colonoscopic and histologic scores were obtained. Density of collagen fibres and apoptotic rates were evaluated. Cytokine levels were measured in supernatants of colon explants. For cell migration studies MSCs and skin fibroblasts were labelled with Tc-99m or CM-DiI and injected intraperitonealy or intravenously.
Intraperitoneal injection of AT-MSCs or BM-MSCs reduced the endoscopic and histopathologic severity of colitis, the collagen deposition, and the epithelial apoptosis. Levels of TNF-α and interleukin-1β decreased, while VEGF and TGF-β did not change following cell-therapy. Scintigraphy showed that MSCs migrated towards the inflamed colon and the uptake increased from 0.5 to 24 h. Tc-99m-MSCs injected intravenously distributed into various organs, but not the colon. Cm-DiI-positive MSCs were detected throughout the colon wall 72 h after inoculation, predominantly in the submucosa and muscular layer of inflamed areas.

Extracting relevant properties of empirical signals generated by nonlinear, stochastic, and high-dimensional systems is a challenge of complex systems research. Open questions are how to ...differentiate chaotic signals from stochastic ones, and how to quantify nonlinear and/or high-order temporal correlations. Here we propose a new technique to reliably address both problems. Our approach follows two steps: first, we train an artificial neural network (ANN) with flicker (colored) noise to predict the value of the parameter, Formula: see text, that determines the strength of the correlation of the noise. To predict Formula: see text the ANN input features are a set of probabilities that are extracted from the time series by using symbolic ordinal analysis. Then, we input to the trained ANN the probabilities extracted from the time series of interest, and analyze the ANN output. We find that the Formula: see text value returned by the ANN is informative of the temporal correlations present in the time series. To distinguish between stochastic and chaotic signals, we exploit the fact that the difference between the permutation entropy (PE) of a given time series and the PE of flicker noise with the same Formula: see text parameter is small when the time series is stochastic, but it is large when the time series is chaotic. We validate our technique by analysing synthetic and empirical time series whose nature is well established. We also demonstrate the robustness of our approach with respect to the length of the time series and to the level of noise. We expect that our algorithm, which is freely available, will be very useful to the community.

Background
Infectious respiratory disease is common in young horses and can impact athletic performance and long‐term health. Significant variation in the duration of clinical disease has ...been observed, even in the absence of secondary complications. The determination of factors associated with disease chronicity may facilitate clinical decision‐making and the development of improved biosecurity protocols.
Objective
To investigate contact network characteristics, and demographic variables associated with time to clinical recovery from Equine Rhinitis A virus respiratory disease.
Study design
Prospective cohort study.
Methods
Yearling Standardbred racehorses (n = 58) housed in a multi‐barn training facility in Southern Ontario were included. Horses were monitored daily for clinical signs of acute respiratory disease over a 41‐day period in Autumn 2017. Contact patterns between horses, including older racehorses, were determined through use of proximity loggers attached to halters during the initial 7‐day of the study. Associations between duration of disease, demographic factors (birth month, gait, sex and yearling sale), serologic titres and network metrics (degree, betweenness and Eigenvector centrality) were investigated using a Cox proportional hazard model.
Results
Yearling attack rate for infectious respiratory disease was 87.9% (n = 51). Median time to recovery was 6 days (IQR = 1–32) and 17 horses were censored due to early withdrawal or failure to recover during the study period. In those yearlings born February–May, birth month was significant in the Cox proportional hazard model (Hazard Ratio 0.7, 95% CI 0.49–1, P = 0.05).
Main limitation
Probability of censoring was not independent of outcome which necessitated use of sensitivity analysis.
Conclusions
These findings suggest late born foals are less likely to recover quickly from infectious respiratory disease.
The relationship between composition and plasmonic properties in noble metal nanoalloys is still largely unexplored. Yet, nanoalloys of noble metals, such as gold, with transition elements, such as ...iron, have unique properties and a number of potential applications, ranging from nanomedicine to magneto-plasmonics and plasmon-enhanced catalysis. Here, we investigate the localized surface plasmon resonance at the level of the single Au–Fe nanoparticle by applying a strategy that combines experimental measurements using near field electron energy loss spectroscopy with theoretical studies via a full wave numerical analysis and density functional theory calculations of electronic structure. We show that, as the iron fraction increases, the plasmon resonance is blue-shifted and significantly damped, as a consequence of the changes in the electronic band structure of the alloy. This allows the identification of three relevant phenomena to be considered in the design and realization of any plasmonic nanoalloy, specifically: the appearance of new states around the Fermi level; the change in the free electron density of the metal; and the blue shift of interband transitions. Overall, this study provides new opportunities for the control of the optical response in Au–Fe and other plasmonic nanoalloys, which are useful for the realization of magneto-plasmonic devices for molecular sensing, thermo-plasmonics, bioimaging, photocatalysis, and the amplification of spectroscopic signals by local field enhancement.
We combine time-resolved pump-probe magneto-optical Kerr effect and photoelectron spectroscopy experiments supported by theoretical analysis to determine the relaxation dynamics of delocalized ...electrons in half-metallic ferromagnetic manganite La1−xSrxMnO3. We observe that the half-metallic character of La1−xSrxMnO3 determines the timescale of both the electronic phase transition and the quenching of magnetization, revealing a quantum isolation of the spin system in double-exchange ferromagnets extending up to hundreds of picoseconds. We demonstrate the use of time-resolved hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as a unique tool to single out the evolution of strongly correlated electronic states across a second-order phase transition in a complex material.
Pathogenic bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis, are important vaccine targets. The 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate ...vaccine (PCV10) acts on 10 differents S. pneumoniae serovars. However, this vaccine could also act on other bacteria genera, leading to dysbiosis. Moreover, the vaccination has also been associated with imbalances in the ratio between commensal and potentially pathogenic bacteria. Despite the wealth of studies assessing the influence of the microbiome on vaccine effects, how vaccination can influence the microbiome remains poorly understood. Herein, we assessed the effects of PCV10 on infant nasopharyngeal microbiome composition. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were collected from children with acute respiratory infection (ARI) aged 6–23 months. Two groups were composed of 48 vaccinated and 36 unvaccinated subjects. 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing was performed to assess bacterial composition and results were analyzed with QIIME. Similar bacterial compositions were observed in the unvaccinated and vaccinated samples. Principal component analysis also indicated a similar bacterial composition between the groups. In addition, bacterial diversity was not different between the vaccinated and unvaccinated samples. Accordingly, our results suggest that PCV10 vaccination promotes a specific response against its targets, thereby preserving the nosocomial microbiome. Although not statistically significant, Streptococcus and Haemophilus genera were increased in the vaccinated group, while Moraxella was decreased. Increases in Streptococcus may be associated with vaccine-target taxa replacement by non-pathogenic species. In sum, we observed that PCV10 vaccination acts by promoting a target-specific action against pathogenic bacteria and also induces commensal bacteria colonization without substantially changing the nasopharyngeal microbiome.
We analyzed results of conformal proton radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer, with emphasis on biochemical freedom from relapse.
Analyses were performed for 1255 patients treated between ...October 1991 and December 1997. Outcomes were measured on primarily in terms of biochemical relapse and toxicity.
The overall biochemical disease-free survival rate was 73%, and was 90% in patients with initial PSA ≤4.0; it was 87% in patients with posttreatment PSA nadirs ≤0.50. Rates dropped with rises in initial and nadir PSA values. Long-term survival outcomes were comparable with those reported for other modalities intended for cure.
Conformal proton radiation therapy at the reported dose levels yielded disease-free survival rates comparable with other forms of local therapy, and with minimal morbidity. Dose-escalation strategies are being implemented to further improve long-term results.
Ticks collected in the last two decades from free-living and captive wild animals from 28 municipalities of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso were identified and tested using molecular methods for ...the presence of rickettsial agents. A total of 4467 ticks (229 larvae, 1676 nymphs, 1565 males, 997 females) representing 27 ixodid species were collected from 235 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals from three different ecoregions (Pantanal, Cerrado, and Amazonia). The species Amblyomma parkeri, Amblyomma romitii, Amblyomma varium and Ixodes luciae are reported for the first time in the state of Mato Grosso. Amongst 538 ticks tested by molecular methods for rickettsial infection, we detected 'Candidatus Rickettsia amblyommii' infecting Amblyomma cajennense sensu stricto and Amblyomma coelebs, Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest infecting Amblyomma ovale, Rickettsia sp. strain NOD infecting Amblyomma nodosum, and 'Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae' infecting Amblyomma sculptum. Our results represent an impressive expansion of knowledge on tick fauna and rickettsiae and are essential for understanding the ecology of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the Neotropical region, particularly in midwestern Brazil.
