We analyze the extent to which citing practices may be driven by strategic considerations. The discontinuation of the Journal of Business (JB) in 2006 for extraneous reasons serves as an exogenous ...shock for analyzing strategic citing behavior. Using a difference-in-differences analysis, we find that articles published in JB before 2006 experienced a relative reduction in citations of approximately 20% after 2006. Since the discontinuation of JB is unrelated to the scientific contributions of its articles, the results imply that the referencing of articles is systematically affected by strategic considerations, which hinders scientific progress.

We analyze whether journal editors exhibit home bias in their acceptance decisions towards researchers affiliated with institutions in the editor's home country. Our results show that the fraction of ...articles accepted by authors affiliated with European civil-law countries increase by 33 % when an editor from the same country serves in the journal. We analyze various possible reasons for this phenomenon and conclude that a likely explanation for the bias is that, in civil-law countries, there is greater emphasis on individuals' solidarity with institutions. We also document that this bias extends to the European Union as a whole. Importantly, articles that are potentially subject to editorial home bias have 10 % lower impact than similar articles. Overall, the findings are consistent with the idea that cultural values potentially foster editorial-biased behavior and hinder scientific progress.

Negotiation abilities are difficult to assess, and negotiation outcomes are difficult to predict. This leads to possible deficiencies in resource allocation for negotiation tasks. In this article, we ...discuss the merits of a data-based approach for the allocation of negotiators to negotiation tasks. We provide a framework for negotiation allocation management that includes a method for assessing negotiator strength. The negotiator strength measure compares observable negotiation outcomes relative to similar outcomes in similar situations. We provide examples for using our framework and show evidence for its appeal when using industry data. We discuss implications for managers and provide key takeaways.
Ecommerce websites increasingly provide predictive analytics-based advice (PAA), such as advice about future potential price reductions. Establishing consumer-trust in these advice-giving systems ...imposes unique and novel challenges. First, PAA about future alternatives that can benefit the consumer appears to inherently contradict the business goal of selling a product quickly and at high profit margins. Second, PAA is based on mathematical models that are non-transparent to the user. Third, PAA advice is inherently uncertain, and can be perceived as subjectively imposed in algorithms. Utilizing Toulmin's argumentation-model, we investigate the influence of advice-justification statements in overcoming these difficulties. Based on three experimental studies, in which respondents are provided with the advice of PAA systems, we show evidence for the different roles Toulmin's statement-types play in enhancing various trusting-beliefs in PAA systems. Provision of warrants is mostly associated with enhanced competence beliefs; rebuttals with integrity beliefs; backings both competence and benevolence; and data statements enhance competence, integrity and benevolence beliefs. Implications of the findings for research and practice are provided.
A growing body of literature supports the notion that the well-being of individuals is influenced by their social networks site (SNS) experiences. In this research, the authors analyze the effect of ...such SNS experience perceptions, termed social networks affective well-being (SNAWB) on behavior in non-SNS sites. Specifically, the authors ask if the visual interface design of a non-SNS site affects the level to which the decisions made in that site are influenced by the decision maker's SNAWB. Relating to theory on emotion and action readiness, this research hypothesizes on the expected effects of a visual interface design that includes elements that may trigger SNS-related emotions. To test the hypothesis, this paper conducts two experiments: 1) an online experiment and 2) a controlled lab experiment with eye-tracking. The results show that individuals' decisions are affected by the level to which the website interface design may trigger SNS emotions. The results further provide evidence on the emotional process leading to different effects according to the type of decision made.
In financial markets, investment options are relatively fixed but may occasionally change as new securities (tickers) are introduced to the markets. Theory on exploratory behavior suggests that when ...new tickers are introduced, the text completion decision aid (autocomplete) can facilitate diversion of market participants from their initially intended ticker to the newly introduced ticker. We analyze whether such diversions have an economic impact in terms of transaction loss. Consistent with our hypothesis, we provide evidence that upon ticker introduction, turnover of securities that are syntactically similar to a newly introduced security is significantly reduced by 3%–5% around the starting day of trade of the new security. Autocomplete appears to have a significant economic effect on market transactions.
The marketing and operations disciplines have increasingly accounted for the presence of strategic consumer behavior. Theory suggests that such behavior exists when consumers are able to consider ...future distribution of prices, and that this behavior exposes firms to intertemporal competition that results with a downward pressure on prices. However, deriving future distribution of prices is not a trivial task. Online decision support tools that provide consumers with information about future distributions of prices can facilitate strategic consumer behavior. This paper studies whether the availability of such information affects transacted prices by conducting an empirical analysis in the context of the airline industry. Studying the effect at the route level, we find significant price reduction effects as such information becomes available for a route, both in fixed-effects and difference-in-differences estimation models. This effect is consistent across the different fare percentiles and amounts to a reduction of approximately 4%–6% in transactions’ prices. Our results lend ample support to the notion that price prediction decision tools make a statistically significant economic impact. Presumably, consumers are able to exploit the information available online and exhibit strategic behavior.

The operational outcome of Revenue Management (RM) is manifested in different magnitudes of market level price volatilities. In this paper we take an analytics approach to the possible use of pricing data of revenue-managed goods to support market analysis. Quantifying the relationship between market-level price volatility in the airline industry and various market-level performance metrics, we find that higher levels of price volatility are associated with higher levels of transacted fares, lower load factors, higher revenues, and increased transacted fare dispersion. This suggests the potential in utilizing market price volatility as an input for market analytics.
Business Intelligence (BI) systems support decision-making and information-sharing in increasingly complex organizational environments. As investment in these systems is steadily increasing in a wide ...range of industries, it is important to understand their economic effect. Under BI, information can be accessed in a timelier manner, decisions become increasingly data driven, and reports become more informative. This, in turn, can lead to more consistent company behavior and performance. We therefore hypothesized that BI systems could help reduce the company's stock return volatility. To test this hypothesis, we empirically analyzed a large sample of firms that had deployed a BI system. Our results indicated a significant reduction in stock return volatility subsequent to BI deployment. The reduction in volatility is of similar magnitude whether the BI system is implemented to serve upper or middle management, or the knowledge workforce. Overall, the results suggested that BI systems reduce the financial risk of an organization.
Purpose We analyze the role of trust as a driver of speculative investment decisions in technology firms. Design/methodology/approach Structural Equation Modeling analysis in the context of ...blockchain technology supports our hypotheses. Findings Our findings indicate that a general propensity to trust technology leads to trusting beliefs in a service based on technology and that trusting beliefs in a technological service leads to a higher propensity to invest in any firm associated with that service. In addition, we show that in a non-technological context, there is no evidence for such an effect of trusting beliefs in a service on investment decisions. These results support the notion that trusting beliefs are facilitators of speculative investment in technology firms. Research limitations/implications The research advances knowledge about the influence of trust in technology on investment decisions; its findings can help build new theoretical models regarding investment decisions using Fintech. Practical implications For investors, it is important to realize the potential bias identified in this study, so they can actively avoid adhering to it, thus avoiding exposure to unnecessary risk. Further, beyond individual investors, investment firms take active measures to avoid biases in their own decision-making. Banks and investment firms can help guide their clients about trust-based bias when building their investment portfolio. Originality/value Although trust in information systems has been studied extensively, research on the relationship between trust in technology and decisions to invest in technology-related firms is limited.
