The new health claim on “olive oil polyphenols” recently approved by the European Commission has produced a dramatic increase in the interest in these antioxidant compounds. Although this interest ...has been focused mostly on extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs), virgin olive oils (VOOs) qualified as having non‐oxidative sensory defects, mostly caused by fermentation and the action of fungi on olives, may still have a considerable amount of phenols, even though their sensory quality is not flawless. This study is focused on the phenol composition of all the VOO categories: EVOOs with their ample variability in phenolic composition, VOOs with slight defects, lampante virgin olive oils (LVOO), and reference materials of defective VOOs. The average content of phenols in the analyzed EVOOs (410 ± 16 mg/kg) is higher than the recommended consumption by the health claim (250 mg/kg). VOOs qualified with non‐oxidative defects contain high concentrations of phenols (234 ± 27 mg/kg), but only samples characterized by the wet‐wood sensory defect show concentrations of phenols close to 250 mg/kg. Practical application: This study has demonstrated that VOOs with slight sensory defects still have a high concentration of phenols, providing antioxidant properties regarding health benefits and stability. The health claim should be not only applied to the extra virgin olive oil category, but also to some virgin olive oils with sensory defects. Abstract
The relationship between structure and function is a major constituent of the rules of life. Structures and functions occur across all levels of biological organization. Current efforts to ...integrate conceptual frameworks and approaches to address new and old questions promise to allow a more holistic and robust understanding of how different biological functions are achieved across levels of biological organization. Here, we provide unifying and generalizable definitions of both structure and function that can be applied across all levels of biological organization. However, we find differences in the nature of structures at the organismal level and below as compared to above the level of the organism. We term these intrinsic and emergent structures, respectively. Intrinsic structures are directly under selection, contributing to the overall performance (fitness) of the individual organism. Emergent structures involve interactions among aggregations of organisms and are not directly under selection. Given this distinction, we argue that while the functions of many intrinsic structures remain unknown, functions of emergent structures are the result of the aggregate of processes of individual organisms. We then provide a detailed and unified framework of the structure–function relationship for intrinsic structures to explore how their unknown functions can be defined. We provide examples of how these scalable definitions applied to intrinsic structures provide a framework to address questions on structure–function relationships that can be approached simultaneously from all subdisciplines of biology. We propose that this will produce a more holistic and robust understanding of how different biological functions are achieved across levels of biological organization.
Tunneled island flaps that transfer skin from a site adjacent to the wound are an effective way to reconstruct defects. These flaps provide good aesthetic and functional results and can be completed ...during a single surgical session, thus reducing complications. The procedure consists of taking an island of skin about the size of the surgical defect and moving it through a subcutaneous tunnel to cover the wound. We aimed to exemplify the use of these flaps in different regions of the face.
Retrospective descriptive study of 12 cases in which tunneled island flaps were used after removal of malignant tumors in different facial regions.
The tumors, all of which were basal cell carcinomas, were removed by means of conventional surgery from 9 patients and Mohs micrographic surgery from 3 patients. Histology demonstrated tumor-free margins after excision in all cases. None of the tumors recurred during a mean follow-up period of 25 months. All complications were minor and transient. There were 3 cases of trapdoor effect and 2 each of postsurgical bleeding, transient superficial flap necrosis, and slight protrusion of the pedicle. The final cosmetic and functional outcome was satisfactory in all cases.
Tunneled island flaps are particularly useful for repairing defects in the center of the face, where several anatomical structures converge. These flaps, which use donor skin that is similar to skin in the receptor site, can be used to close large defects in one-step procedures with only slight alteration of the facial architecture.
El colgajo en isla tunelizado (CIT) supone una opción eficaz para la reparación de grandes defectos faciales trasponiendo piel desde una unidad anatómica adyacente. La realización del colgajo aporta buenos resultados estéticos y funcionales en un único tiempo quirúrgico, evitando así complicaciones. El procedimiento consiste en labrar una isla de piel de dimensiones similares a las del defecto original, para luego desplazarla a través de un túnel subcutáneo a la región receptora. Nuestro objetivo es ejemplificar su uso en diferentes regiones de la cara.
Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de 12 casos con reconstrucción mediante CIT tras la extirpación de tumores malignos en distintas áreas faciales.
Presentamos una serie de 12 casos intervenidos de carcinoma basocelular, 9 mediante cirugía convencional y 3 mediante cirugía de Mohs. El estudio histológico mostró bordes quirúrgicos libres en todas las piezas de resección. El tiempo medio de seguimiento fue de 25 meses sin detectarse recidivas tumorales. Las complicaciones fueron menores y temporales: efecto trampilla en 3 pacientes, hemorragia posquirúrgica en 2, necrosis superficial transitoria del colgajo en 2 y protrusión leve del pedículo en 2 casos. El resultado final cosmético y funcional fue satisfactorio en todos los casos.
Los CIT son especialmente útiles en defectos centrofaciales donde convergen distintas unidades anatómicas. Permiten la reconstrucción en un único tiempo quirúrgico de grandes defectos faciales, aportando piel de características similares a las de la zona receptora y alterando mínimamente la arquitectura facial.

During the course of the EU H2020 OLEUM project, a harmonized method was developed to quantify volatile markers of the aroma of virgin olive oil with the aim to support the work of sensory panel test to assess the quality grade. A peer validation of this method has been carried out, with good results in terms of analytical quality parameters. The method allows the quantification of volatile compounds by SPME-GC with two possible detectors, flame ionization detector and mass spectrometry, depending on the technical facilities of the labs applying this method. The method was optimized for the quantification of 18 volatile compounds that were selected as being markers responsible for positive attributes (e.g. fruity) and sensory defects (e.g. rancid and winey-vinegary). The quantification is carried out with calibration curves corrected by the internal standards. Additionally, a protocol is provided to prepare the calibration samples. This procedure enhances reproducibility between labs since one of the main sources of errors is the application of different procedures in calibration.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects more than 350 million people worldwide, and there is currently no laboratory test to diagnose it. This pilot study aimed to identify potential biomarkers in ...peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from MDD patients. We used tandem mass tagging coupled to synchronous precursor selection (mass spectrometry) to obtain the differential proteomic profile from a pool of PBMCs from MDD patients and healthy subjects, and quantitative PCR to assess gene expression of differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) of our interest. We identified 247 proteins, of which 133 had a fold change greater than or equal to 2.0 compared to healthy volunteers. Using pathway enrichment analysis, we found that some processes, such as platelet degranulation, coagulation, and the inflammatory response, are perturbed in MDD patients. The gene-disease association analysis showed that molecular alterations in PBMCs from MDD patients are associated with cerebral ischemia, vascular disease, thrombosis, acute coronary syndrome, and myocardial ischemia, in addition to other conditions such as inflammation and diabetic retinopathy. We confirmed by qRT-PCR that S100A8 is upregulated in PBMCs from MDD patients and thus could be an emerging biomarker of this disorder. This report lays the groundwork for future studies in a broader and more diverse population and contributes to a deeper characterization of MDD.
The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of increasing the number of heifers per concentrate feeding place on performance, behavior, welfare indicators, and ruminal fermentation ...of feedlot heifers. Seventy-two Friesian heifers were used in a factorial arrangement, with 3 treatments and 3 blocks of similar BW. Treatments consisted of 2 (T2), 4 (T4), or 8 (T8) heifers per each place in the concentrate feeder (8 heifers/pen). Concentrate and straw were fed at 0830 h in individual feeders that allowed ad libitum consumption. During 6 periods of 28 d each, DMI and ADG were measured, and blood and rumen samples were taken. Fecal glucocorticoid metabolites and behavior were measured at periods 1, 3, and 6. Final BW, ADG, and G:F were not affected by treatments. Variability in final BW among heifers sharing the same pen tended to increase (P = 0.06) and concentrate intake decreased linearly as competition increased. The proportion of abscessed livers responded quadratically, being 8, 4, and 20% for T2, T4, and T8, respectively. Concentrate eating time decreased (P = 0.001) and eating rate increased (P = 0.05) linearly, whereas the variability between pen mates in concentrate eating time was greatest in T4 and T8. Increasing competition resulted in a quadratic response (P = 0.02) in daily lying time (greatest in T2), whereas standing time increased linearly (P = 0.02). The number of displacements among pen mates from the concentrate feeders, as well as the total sum of displacements, increased linearly (P < 0.05) with increasing competition. The pen average of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites was not affected by treatments (P >/= 0.16) but the pen's maximum concentration responded quadratically (P < 0.001), being greatest in T8, with dominant heifers being the most affected. Serum haptoglobin concentration increased linearly (P = 0.05) with competition, particularly within the most subordinate heifers. Increased competition reduced (P < 0.05) ruminal pH only in periods 1 and 2 and increased ruminal lactate (P = 0.02). Increasing competition at the concentrate feeders increased the variability in final BW but performance was not affected. Detrimental effects on animal welfare might be deduced from the altered feeding behavior, reduced resting time, and increased aggression. Ruminal lactate and blood haptoglobin indicate that the risk of rumen acidosis might increase with competition, whereas liver abscesses increased at 8 heifers per feeder.
The physicochemical phenomena that explain the sensing mechanisms of gas sensors have been extensively investigated. Nevertheless, it is arduous to interpret the sensor signals in a practical ...approach when they response to complex mixtures of compounds responsible for food aroma. Thus, the concomitant interactions between the volatiles and the sensor give up a single response affected by synergic and masking effects between compounds. An experimental procedure is proposed to determine the individual contribution of volatile compounds in the sensor response, illustrated with the examples of aroma of dry-cured hams and metal oxide sensors. The results from mathematical correlations and the analyses of pure standards are previously analyzed to describe the behavior of sensors when interacting with individual compounds. A sensor based olfactory detector (SBOD) entailing the use of a capillary column connected to a sensor array as non-destructive detector in parallel with the flame detector served to provide definitive information about the individual contribution of volatile compounds to sensor responses. The sensor responses in this system, which is referred to as sensorgram, were interpreted by taking into account the volatile composition of the samples determined by GC.

BACKGROUNDPassive immunotherapy with convalescent plasma (CP) is a potential treatment for COVID-19. Evidence from controlled clinical trials is inconclusive.METHODSWe conducted a randomized, ...open-label, controlled clinical trial at 27 hospitals in Spain. Patients had to be admitted for COVID-19 pneumonia within 7 days from symptom onset and not on mechanical ventilation or high-flow oxygen devices. Patients were randomized 1:1 to treatment with CP in addition to standard of care (SOC) or to the control arm receiving only SOC. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients in categories 5 (noninvasive ventilation or high-flow oxygen), 6 (invasive mechanical ventilation or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation ECMO), or 7 (death) at 14 days. Primary analysis was performed in the intention-to-treat population.RESULTSBetween April 4, 2020, and February 5, 2021, 350 patients were randomly assigned to either CP (n = 179) or SOC (n = 171). At 14 days, proportion of patients in categories 5, 6, or 7 was 11.7% in the CP group versus 16.4% in the control group (P = 0.205). The difference was greater at 28 days, with 8.4% of patients in categories 5-7 in the CP group versus 17.0% in the control group (P = 0.021). The difference in overall survival did not reach statistical significance (HR 0.46, 95% CI 0.19-1.14, log-rank P = 0.087).CONCLUSIONCP showed a significant benefit in preventing progression to noninvasive ventilation or high-flow oxygen, invasive mechanical ventilation or ECMO, or death at 28 days.
