SCOPE: Urolithins are bioactive metabolites produced by the gut microbiota from ellagitannins (ETs) and ellagic acid (EA). We investigated whether urolithins could be detected in colon tissues from ...colorectal cancer (CRC) patients after pomegranate extract (PE) intake. METHODS AND RESULTS: CRC patients (n = 52) were divided into controls and PEs consumers (900 mg/day for 15 days) before surgical resection. PEs with low (PE‐1) and high (PE‐2) punicalagin:EA ratio were administered. Twenty‐three metabolites, but no ellagitannins, were detected in urine, plasma, normal (NT) or malignant (MT) colon tissues using UPLC‐ESI‐QTOF‐MS/MS (UPLC, ultra performance liquid chromatography; QTOF, quadrupole TOF). Free EA, five EA conjugates, gallic acid and 12 urolithin derivatives were found in colon tissues. Individual and total metabolites levels were higher in NT than in MT, independently of the PE consumed. The maximal mean concentration (1671 ± 367 ng/g) was found in NT after consumption of PE‐1 and the lowest concentration (42.4 ± 10.2 ng/g) in MT with PE‐2. Urolithin A or isourolithin A were the main urolithins produced (54 and 46% patients with urolithin A or isourolithin A phenotype, respectively). High punicalagin content (PE‐2) hampered urolithins formation. CONCLUSION: Significant levels of EA derivatives and urolithins are found in human colon tissues from CRC patients after consumption of pomegranate. Further studies are warranted to elucidate their biological activity.
Urolithins are dibenzob,dpyran‐6‐one derivatives that are produced by the human gut microbiota from ellagitannins and ellagic acid (EA). These metabolites are much better absorbed than their ...precursors and have been suggested to be responsible for the health effects attributed to ellagitannins and EA that occur in food products as berries and nuts. In the present review, the role and potential of urolithins in human health are critically reviewed, and a perspective of the research approach needed to demonstrate these health effects is presented, based on the existing knowledge. The analytical methods available for urolithin analysis, their occurrence in different tissues and biological fluids, and their metabolism by human gut microbiota are considered. In addition, the interindividual variability observed for the production of urolithins (metabotypes) and its relationship with health status and dysbiosis are also reviewed. The potential mechanisms of action of urolithins are also critically discussed, paying attention to the concentration and the type of metabolites used in the in vitro and in vivo assays and the physiological significance of the results obtained. The gut microbiota metabolism of EA to urolithins and that of daidzein to equol, their individual variations, and the effects on health are also compared.
The role of urolithins in human health after the consumption of dietary ellagitannins (ETs) is reviewed. The review shows preclinical evidence and in vitro mechanistic studies indicating that ETs can have anti‐inflammatory effects. However, no clinical studies have confirmed this effect yet. The recent finding that urolithins can reach the brain has increased the relevance of preclinical studies indicating that urolithins might have a role in protecting against neurodegenerative diseases.
Purpose
To review the rebound effect after cessation of different myopia control treatments.
Methods
A systematic review that included full‐length randomised controlled studies (RCTs), as well as ...post‐hoc analyses of RCTs reporting new findings on myopia control treatments rebound effect in two databases, PubMed and Web of Science, was performed according to the PRISMA statement. The search period was between 15 June 2023 and 30 June 2023. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to analyse the quality of the selected studies.
Results
A total of 11 studies were included in this systematic review. Unifying the rebound effects of all myopia control treatments, the mean rebound effect for axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent refraction (SER) were 0.10 ± 0.07 mm −0.02 to 0.22 and −0.27 ± 0.2 D −0.71 to −0.03 after 10.2 ± 7.4 months of washout, respectively. In addition, spectacles with highly aspherical lenslets or defocus incorporated multiple segments technology, soft multifocal contact lenses and orthokeratology showed lower rebound effects compared with atropine and low‐level light therapy, with a mean rebound effect for AL and SER of 0.04 ± 0.04 mm 0 to 0.08 and −0.13 ± 0.07 D −0.05 to −0.2, respectively.
Conclusions
It appears that the different treatments for myopia control produce a rebound effect after their cessation. Specifically, optical treatments seem to produce less rebound effect than pharmacological or light therapies. However, more studies are required to confirm these results.
THO/TREX connects transcription with genome integrity in yeast, but a role of mammalian THO in these processes is uncertain, which suggests a differential implication of mRNP biogenesis factors in ...genome integrity in yeast and humans. We show that human THO depletion impairs transcription elongation and mRNA export and increases instability associated with DNA breaks, leading to hyper-recombination and γH2AX and 53BP1 foci accumulation. This is accompanied by replication alteration as determined by DNA combing. Genome instability is R-loop-dependent, as deduced from the ability of the AID enzyme to increase DNA damage and of RNaseH to reduce it, or from the enhancement of R-loop-dependent class-switching caused by THOC1-depletion in CH12 murine cells. Therefore, mammalian THO prevents R-loop formation and has a role in genome dynamics and function consistent with an evolutionary conservation of the functional connection between these mRNP biogenesis factors and genome integrity that had not been anticipated.

This article presents findings from qualitative research conducted in eight New York City public schools offering English as a new language (also known as English as a second language), in which ...language education policies were monolingual in English at the start of data collection. These schools participated in an intensive professional development and technical assistance project for which they were required to engage students' bilingualism as a resource in instruction and implement translanguaging pedagogy, using the entire linguistic repertoire of bilingual children flexibly and strategically in instruction (García, Ibarra Johnson, & Seltzer, 2016). This study documents the efforts of participating schools to make their practices for emergent bilinguals more multilingual. Findings suggest that translanguaging pedagogy initiated broader ideological shifts as educators adopted a translanguaging stance that has proven transformative to the schools as a whole. Specifically, findings reveal changes in how educators thought about emergent bilinguals, their language practices and the place of those practices in instruction, and how this ideological shift engendered significant changes in several schools to their language policies. Moreover, findings show how the introduction of translanguaging pedagogy in participating schools disrupted dominant monolingual approaches in theoretical and practical ways and the impact of doing so on educators and students.
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an environmental bacterium found in the soil, associated with plants and animals, and in aquatic environments. It is also an opportunistic pathogen now causing an ...increasing number of nosocomial infections. The treatment of S. maltophilia is quite difficult given its intrinsic resistance to a number of antibiotics, and because it is able to acquire new resistances via horizontal gene transfer and mutations. Certainly, strains resistant to quinolones, cotrimoxale and/or cephalosporins-antibiotics commonly used to treat S. maltophilia infections-have emerged. The increasing number of available S. maltophilia genomes has allowed the identification and annotation of a large number of antimicrobial resistance genes. Most encode inactivating enzymes and efflux pumps, but information on their role in intrinsic and acquired resistance is limited. Non-typical antibiotic resistance mechanisms that also form part of the intrinsic resistome have been identified via mutant library screening. These include non-typical antibiotic resistance genes, such as bacterial metabolism genes, and non-inheritable resistant phenotypes, such as biofilm formation and persistence. Their relationships with resistance are complex and require further study.

There is currently a paradigm shift in the theoretical frameworks that support these investigations in examining the organisational and institutional environments that favour the advantages associated with the presence of women in bodies responsible for business strategy. However, the latest papers are based on the use of the Critical mass theory and moderating factors in order to explaining the divergence of results.
Obesity has reached epidemic dimensions in recent decades. Although BS is known to induce significant changes in the gut microbiota composition, its impact on the circulating levels of certain metabolites produced by the gut microbiota such as SCFA remains poorly understood.
To determine the impact of BS on the circulating SCFA levels in patients with severe obesity.

An observational, prospective study was performed on 51 patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Plasma samples were collected at baseline (1 day before surgery) and at 6 and 12 months after BS. Plasma SCFA levels were determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
The results revealed significant changes in the circulating levels of SCFA after BS. A marked increase in propionate, butyrate, isobutyrate, and isovalerate levels and a decrease in acetate, valerate, hexanoate, and heptanoate levels were observed 12 months after BS. Furthermore, the changes in the levels of propionate, butyrate, and isobutyrate negatively correlated with changes in body mass index, while those of isobutyrate correlated negatively with changes in the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance index.
These results suggest that propionate, butyrate, and isobutyrate levels could be related to weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity in patients with severe obesity after BS.
To assess computer vision syndrome (CVS) in a preteen population through an adult‐validated CVS questionnaire and to evaluate how digital devices affect accommodative and binocular vision, we ...enrolled 309 preteens in this cross‐sectional study. An adult‐validated CVS questionnaire adapted to preteens was used for all subjects. Visual acuity testing, unilateral and alternate cover tests, and tests for accommodative and vergence responses were performed for all preteens. The mean age was 10.75 ± 0.67 (10–12) years. Subjects were divided into two groups: the mild CVS group with a mean CVS score ≤2 and the severe CVS group with a mean CVS score >2. Between the mild and severe CVS groups, statistically significant differences were found in near point of convergence break and recovery (P = 0.03 and P = 0.02, respectively) and distance negative fusional vergence break and recovery (P = 0.02 and P < 0.01, respectively). More children with severe CVS developed vergence disorders than those with mild CVS. Optometric clinical screening assessments could reduce ocular symptomatology and prevent long‐term effects. However, poor optometric findings might have occurred first, and the poor convergence skills resulted in the symptoms reported while using devices.
This observational, descriptive, cross‐sectional study assessed computer vision syndrome in preteens, with age ranging from 10 to 12 years, through a survey validated for adults and adapted for preteens. We performed the optometric examination, including clinic history, visual acuity, tropias and phorias, accommodation variables, and positive fusional vergence (PFV) and negative fusional vergence (NFV), to investigate the relationship of these variables to the use of digital devices. Statistically significant differences were found in near point convergence and distance NFV, and the difference tended to be significant in near NFV.
Accommodation disorders and nonstrabismic binocular dysfunctions affect patients’ binocular system and visual performance. These visual disorders could be associated with musculoskeletal discomfort ...in the neck and shoulder area. The purpose of this systematic review and meta‐analysis was to ascertain the relationship between visual system disorders and the musculoskeletal system of the neck. The review protocol is available in PROSPERO (CRD42018112771). All articles selected examined the relationship between neck conditions (chronic neck pain and whiplash) and the visual system in adult populations. Studies with optometric or physiotherapeutic measurements were included. Bias risk was evaluated with the modified Cochrane Collaboration Tool and Study Quality Assessment Tool. To provide complete quality assessment evidence, the authors applied the GRADEpro Guideline Development Tool. The literature search was conducted in November 2018 and yielded 745 studies among all the databases. Out of these studies, 21 were finally included. Most of the studies presented a moderate methodological quality. Only one high‐quality trial was found. Based on a qualitative assessment, our systematic review and meta‐analysis revealed that all included studies established a relationship between the visual system and musculoskeletal system of the neck. However, the methods for the measurement of the visual system lacked uniformity.
