The photoproduction of omega mesons on nuclei has been investigated using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the ELSA tagged photon facility in Bonn. The aim is to study possible in-medium ...modifications of the omega meson via the reaction gamma + A --> omega + X --> pi(0)gamma + X('). Results obtained for Nb are compared to a reference measurement on a LH2 target. While for recoiling, long-lived mesons (pi(0), eta, and eta;(')), which decay outside of the nucleus, a difference in the line shape for the two data samples is not observed, we find a significant enhancement towards lower masses for omega mesons produced on the Nb target. For momenta less than 500 MeV/c an in-medium omega meson mass of M(medium) = 722(+4)(-4)(stat)+35-5(syst) MeV/c(2) has been deduced at an estimated average nuclear density of 0.6rho(0).

The analysis of stress-responsiveness in plants is an important route to the discovery of genes conferring stress tolerance and their use in breeding programs. High temperature is one of the environmental stress factors that can affect the growth and quality characteristics of barley (Hordeum vulgare). In this study a proteomic analysis (2D-PAGE, MS) was used to detect the effects of heat shock on the protein pattern of an abiotic stress-tolerant (Mandolina) and an abiotic stress-susceptible (Jubilant) barley cultivar. Evaluation of two-dimensional gels revealed several proteins to be differentially expressed as a result of heat stress in both cultivars. The protein spots of interest were, after an in-gel tryptic digestion, further investigated by mass spectrometry. For the analysis of the peptide mixture, we both used a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) tandem time of flight mass spectrometer (TOF/TOF) and an automated nano-HPLC system coupled to an electrospray ionization-quadrupole linear ion trap (Q-TRAP) instrument. The hyphenation of the latter techniques proved to be a powerful technique as shown by the identification of six isoforms of a 16.9 kDa sHSP in one single spot. We observed that S-adenosylmethionine synthetase (SAM-S) was differentially expressed between the two cultivars. Recent results refer to the role of SAM-S as being involved in abiotic stress tolerance. Furthermore, comparison of the heat shock treated samples also revealed several small heat shock proteins (sHSP), of which distinct isoforms could be characterised.
The Nπ^{0}π^{0} decays of positive-parity N^{*} and Δ^{*} resonances at about 2 GeV are studied at ELSA by photoproduction of two neutral pions off protons. The data reveal clear evidence for several ...intermediate resonances: Δ(1232), N(1520)3/2^{-}, and N(1680)5/2^{+}, with spin parities J^{P}=3/2^{+}, 3/2^{-}, and 5/2^{+}. The partial wave analysis (within the Bonn-Gatchina approach) identifies N(1440)1/2^{+} and the N(ππ)_{S wave} (abbreviated as Nσ here) as further isobars and assigns the final states to the formation of nucleon and Δ resonances and to nonresonant contributions. We observe the known Δ(1232)π decays of Δ(1910)1/2^{+}, Δ(1920)3/2^{+}, Δ(1905)5/2^{+}, Δ(1950)7/2^{+}, and of the corresponding spin-parity series in the nucleon sector, N(1880)1/2^{+}, N(1900)3/2^{+}, N(2000)5/2^{+}, and N(1990)7/2^{+}. For the nucleon resonances, these decay modes are reported here for the first time. Further new decay modes proceed via N(1440)1/2^{+}π, N(1520)3/2^{-}π, N(1680)5/2^{+}π, and Nσ. The latter decay modes are observed in the decay of N^{*} resonances and at most weakly in Δ^{*} decays. It is argued that these decay modes provide evidence for a 3-quark nature of N^{*} resonances rather than a quark-diquark structure.
The differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements for the reaction γp→pω were measured using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment for initial photon energies ranging from the ...reaction threshold to 2.5 GeV. These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the ω meson, ω→π0γ. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the t-channel forward rise. The overall shape of the angular distributions in the differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements are in fair agreement with previous data. In addition, for the first time, a beam of linearly-polarized tagged photons in the energy range from 1150 MeV to 1650 MeV was used to extract polarized spin-density matrix elements.
These data were included in the Bonn–Gatchina partial wave analysis (PWA). The dominant contribution to ω photoproduction near threshold was found to be the 3/2+ partial wave, which is primarily due to the sub-threshold N(1720)3/2+ resonance. At higher energies, pomeron-exchange was found to dominate whereas π-exchange remained small. These t-channel contributions as well as further contributions from nucleon resonances were necessary to describe the entire dataset: the 1/2−, 3/2−, and 5/2+ partial waves were also found to contribute significantly.
Quasifree photoproduction of eta mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV at the Bonn ELSA accelerator. The ...eta mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons, which allows a detailed comparison of the quasifree n(gamma,eta)n and p(gamma,eta)p reactions. The excitation function for eta production off the neutron shows a pronounced bumplike structure at W=1.68 GeV (E{gamma} approximately 1 GeV), which is absent for the proton.
Information on hadron properties in the nuclear medium has been derived from the photoproduction of omega mesons on the nuclei C, Ca, Nb, and Pb using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector at the ELSA ...tagged photon facility in Bonn. The dependence of the omega-meson cross section on the nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models: a Glauber analysis, a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck analysis of the Giessen theory group, and a calculation by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic omega width is found to be 130-150 MeV/c(2) at normal nuclear matter density for an average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the rest frame of the omega meson, this inelastic omega width corresponds to a reduction of the omega lifetime by a factor approximately 30. For the first time, the momentum dependent omegaN cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70 mb.
BackgroundThe use (and misuse) of antibiotics not only influences therapeutic outcomes for the individual patient, but due to emerging resistance, the whole population may also be affected. ...Advocating a multidisciplinary approach, including pharmacists, has the potential to achieve better clinical outcomes and rationalised antibiotic consumption.PurposeTo assess the potential benefit of the recent implementation of clinical pharmacy services in an intensive care unit (ICU) by analysing the usage pattern of antibiotics prescribed by a multiprofessional team.Material and methodsThe study was conducted in a 12 bed ICU from 01 September 2016 to 15 October 2016. Antibiotic medication review was carried out by clinical pharmacists using a worksheet approved by the local drug and therapeutic committee. It contained data about the patient’s identity, admission parameters, length of stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, prescribed antibiotics, microbial cultures and SOFA scores.Results42 patients were screened, 18 of whom were older than 65 years. Length of treatment was longer than 7 days in 11 patients. 21 subjects were mechanically ventilated, 12 of whom were on ventilation for 1–4 days, while the others were ventilated for more than 5 days. 6 patients contracted a nosocomial infection which was associated with longer mechanical ventilation.9 patients died, 14 were transferred to sub-intensive care and 19 were transferred to other departments. 18 received postoperative prophylactic antibiotic therapy, and 1 case was not in line with current guidelines. In 26 cases, empirical antibiotic regimens were issued, while only 8 patients were treated with targeted therapies. 34 subjects received one or two antibiotics, and in 11 cases, a change in the therapeutic regimen was issued due to insufficient therapeutic response. Unfortunately, de-escalation was implemented in only 6 cases, the rate of which might presumably be increased by the recent introduction of a clinical pharmacist to the ICU. The low de-escalation rate was rationalised by a highly cautious attitude of intensive care physicians.ConclusionThe attributable medical and population wide costs of antimicrobial therapies are sizable. Results from this assessment might provide an argument for the potential need of a multiprofessional approach when prescribing antimicrobial therapies in the ICU, especially for mechanically ventilated patients.No conflict of interest
The reaction γp→KS0Σ+ is studied in the photon energy range from threshold. Linearly polarised photon beams from coherent bremsstrahlung enabled the first measurement of photon beam asymmetries in ...this reaction up to Eγ=1650MeV. In addition, the recoil hyperon polarisation was determined through the asymmetry in the weak decay Σ+→pπ0 up to Eγ=2250MeV. The data are compared to partial wave analyses, and the possible impact on the interpretation of a recently observed prominent structure in the cross section near the K⁎ thresholds is discussed.
Photoproduction of two neutral pions off the proton is studied using linearly polarized photons, and the polarization observables Is and Ic are measured for the first time. These two observables are ...unique to multi-meson final states; they characterize correlations between the linear photon polarization and the direction of outgoing single particles in photoproduction of three-body final states. The Is and Ic distributions suggest that, in the 1.8 to 2.0 GeV mass region, the N(1520)3/2−π intermediate state is reached with reaction dynamics consistent with a dominant JP=3/2+ wave. These data are included in the Bonn–Gatchina (BnGa) partial wave analysis which is based on a large variety of data; the analysis confirms a significant contribution from the reaction chain γp→N(1900)3/2+→N(1520)3/2−π0→pπ0π0.
