A study was conducted on the physical properties of anthrosols in the Park Ludowy in Lublin. Soil samples for analyses were taken from five pedons, from layers of 0-25, 25-50 and 50-75 cm, into ...cylinders with volume of 100 cm3. Determinations included the bulk density of the soils, particle density, and water capacities at states of high and low water potential. Calculations of total porosity, retention of productive water and water usable for plants, as well as of air capacities at various states of water potential were performed. The physical status of the soils in the Park, formed as an effect of intensive anthropogenic activity, and especially of the introduction of large amounts of foreign material – sugar beet flume mud and loess, should be assessed as very good. The soils were most often characterised by very low bulk density, very high total porosity, full water capacity and field water capacity, very high and high retention of water usable for plants and productive water, and by diversified field air capacity – from low to excessive.

For the assessment of the extent of post-mine land degradation, arranging management practices for sustainable land use, and evaluation of reclamation success research on soil physical properties plays a significant role. The aim of this study was to quantify and interpret the effects of varied agricultural reclamation methods in order to assess which of the treatments yielded higher soil quality with respect to its physical state. Basic physical and chemical parameters (texture, particle and bulk density, total porosity, total organic carbon and pH), soil water characteristic curves, water and air permeability, structure of the soil damaged by mining in the area of internal dumping ground PĿtnów (Central Poland) were therefore measured. The soil samples were taken from the following 5 different variants of over 30-year-long reclamation: black fallow (BF), monoculture of winter wheat (WW), monoculture of winter wheat with a single application in 1992 of lignite dust (WW+L), monoculture of alfalfa with orchard grass in the proportion of 90/10% (A+G), and spontaneous succession (SS). We collected from each treatment: 12 soil cores for soil water and air properties; 6-kg composite bulk samples for basic physical and chemical properties of soil; 1 undisturbed soil block for structure analysis. The reclamation methods applied on the post-mining grounds influenced in a diverse manner the physical state of the 0⿿10cm layer of the developed technogenic soil. Bulk density values generally decreased with the increase of number of factors potentially loosening the soil structure. The studied plots had sandy loam or loamy sand texture which determined their overall air and water properties. The soils were characterized by high macroporosity and favourable content of water available for plants. Less beneficial conditions of the soil were associated with air and water permeability. The present studies indicated that spontaneous succession, with the highest typological diversity of vegetation, contributed to the most preferred soil physical state. Remaining variants of reclamation (including black fallow without vegetation) also provided sufficient air and water relations in the soils. However, it should be emphasised that plants play an important role in TOC accumulation and ensuring relative stability of soil structure. Therefore rehabilitation of post-mining grounds involving vegetation is recommended.
Olaparib, a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor, has previously shown efficacy in a phase 2 study when given in capsule formulation to all-comer patients with platinum-sensitive, relapsed ...high-grade serous ovarian cancer. We aimed to confirm these findings in patients with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 (BRCA1/2) mutation using a tablet formulation of olaparib.
This international, multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial evaluated olaparib tablet maintenance treatment in platinum-sensitive, relapsed ovarian cancer patients with a BRCA1/2 mutation who had received at least two lines of previous chemotherapy. Eligible patients were aged 18 years or older with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status at baseline of 0–1 and histologically confirmed, relapsed, high-grade serous ovarian cancer or high-grade endometrioid cancer, including primary peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer. Patients were randomly assigned 2:1 to olaparib (300 mg in two 150 mg tablets, twice daily) or matching placebo tablets using an interactive voice and web response system. Randomisation was stratified by response to previous platinum chemotherapy (complete vs partial) and length of platinum-free interval (6–12 months vs ≥12 months) and treatment assignment was masked for patients, those giving the interventions, data collectors, and data analysers. The primary endpoint was investigator-assessed progression-free survival and we report the primary analysis from this ongoing study. The efficacy analyses were done on the intention-to-treat population; safety analyses included patients who received at least one dose of study treatment. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01874353, and is ongoing and no longer recruiting patients.
Between Sept 3, 2013, and Nov 21, 2014, we enrolled 295 eligible patients who were randomly assigned to receive olaparib (n=196) or placebo (n=99). One patient in the olaparib group was randomised in error and did not receive study treatment. Investigator-assessed median progression-free survival was significantly longer with olaparib (19·1 months 95% CI 16·3–25·7) than with placebo (5·5 months 5·2–5·8; hazard ratio HR 0·30 95% CI 0·22–0·41, p<0·0001). The most common adverse events of grade 3 or worse severity were anaemia (38 19% of 195 patients in the olaparib group vs two 2% of 99 patients in the placebo group), fatigue or asthenia (eight 4% vs two 2%), and neutropenia (ten 5% vs four 4%). Serious adverse events were experienced by 35 (18%) patients in the olaparib group and eight (8%) patients in the placebo group. The most common in the olaparib group were anaemia (seven 4% patients), abdominal pain (three 2% patients), and intestinal obstruction (three 2% patients). The most common in the placebo group were constipation (two 2% patients) and intestinal obstruction (two 2% patients). One (1%) patient in the olaparib group had a treatment-related adverse event (acute myeloid leukaemia) with an outcome of death.
Olaparib tablet maintenance treatment provided a significant progression-free survival improvement with no detrimental effect on quality of life in patients with platinum-sensitive, relapsed ovarian cancer and a BRCA1/2 mutation. Apart from anaemia, toxicities with olaparib were low grade and manageable.

The aim of this final analysis is to investigate the effect of olaparib on overall survival.
This double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial was done across 123 medical centres in 16 countries. Eligible patients were aged 18 years or older, had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status at baseline of 0–1, had histologically confirmed, relapsed, high-grade serous or high-grade endometrioid ovarian cancer, including primary peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer, and had received two or more previous platinum regimens. Patients were randomly assigned (2:1) to receive olaparib tablets (300 mg in two 150 mg tablets twice daily) or matching placebo tablets using an interactive web or voice-response system. Stratification was by response to previous chemotherapy and length of platinum-free interval. Treatment assignment was masked to patients, treatment providers, and data assessors. The primary endpoint of progression-free survival has been reported previously. Overall survival was a key secondary endpoint and was analysed in all patients as randomly allocated. Safety was assessed in all patients who received at least one treatment dose. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01874353, and is no longer recruiting patients.
Between Sept 3, 2013 and Nov 21, 2014, 295 patients were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either olaparib (n=196 66%) or placebo (n=99 34%). One patient, randomised in error, did not receive olaparib. Median follow-up was 65·7 months (IQR 63·6–69·3) with olaparib and 64·5 months (63·4–68·7) with placebo. Median overall survival was 51·7 months (95% CI 41·5–59·1) with olaparib and 38·8 months (31·4–48·6) with placebo (hazard ratio 0·74 95% CI 0·54–1·00; p=0·054), unadjusted for the 38% of patients in the placebo group who received subsequent PARP inhibitor therapy. The most common grade 3 or worse treatment-emergent adverse event was anaemia (which occurred in 41 21% of 195 patients in the olaparib group and two 2% of 99 patients in the placebo group). Serious treatment-emergent adverse events were reported in 50 (26%) of 195 patients receiving olaparib and eight (8%) of 99 patients receiving placebo. Treatment-emergent adverse events with a fatal outcome occurred in eight (4%) of the 195 patients receiving olaparib, six of which were judged to be treatment-related (attributed to myelodysplastic syndrome n=3 and acute myeloid leukaemia n=3).
Olaparib provided a median overall survival benefit of 12·9 months compared with placebo in patients with platinum-sensitive, relapsed ovarian cancer and a BRCA1/2 mutation. Although statistical significance was not reached, these findings are arguably clinically meaningful and support the use of maintenance olaparib in these patients.

The aim of this study was to analyze the association between overweight prevalence and socioeconomic status (SES) measured by complex SES index and single SES factors in Polish adolescents in respect ...to age and sex.
This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010-2011. A total of 1,176 adolescents aged 13.0-18.9 years were included. The respondents were students of junior-high and high schools from northern, eastern and central Poland. Quota sampling by sex and age was used. The SES was determined by: place of residence, self-declared economic situation, and parental education level. Respondents with low, average or high SES index (SESI) were identified. The level of overweight was assessed using Polish and international standards.
The odds ratio (OR) for overweight prevalence in the oldest girls (aged 17.0-18.9 years) with high SESI was 0.34 (95%CI:0.13-0.92; P < 0.05) by Polish standards and 0.22 (95%CI:0.05-0.95; P < 0.05) by international standards, in comparison to the reference group (low SESI). In total girls who had mothers with higher education level, the OR adjusted for age was 0.44 (95%CI:0.21-0.90; P <0.05) by Polish standards and 0.35 (95%CI:0.15-0.81; P < 0.05) by international standards, in comparison to the reference group (maternal elementary education). The other single SES factors were not significant for overweight prevalence.
The relationship between socioeconomic status and prevalence of overweight was related to sex and age. The high socioeconomic status strongly lowered the risk of overweight prevalence in the oldest girls, but not in boys, irrespective of age. Maternal education level lowered risk of overweight prevalence in girls.
Lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women are the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Poland and worldwide. Results of studies involving dietary patterns (DPs) and breast or lung cancer risk in ...European countries outside the Mediterranean Sea region are limited and inconclusive. This study aimed to develop a 'Polish-adapted Mediterranean Diet' ('Polish-aMED') score, and then study the associations between the 'Polish-aMED' score and
-derived dietary patterns with breast or lung cancer risk in adult Poles. This pooled analysis of two case-control studies involved 560 subjects (280 men, 280 women) aged 40-75 years from Northeastern Poland. Diagnoses of breast cancer in 140 women and lung cancer in 140 men were found. The food frequency consumption of 21 selected food groups was collected using a 62-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ)-6. The 'Polish-adapted Mediterranean Diet' score which included eight items-vegetables, fruit, whole grain, fish, legumes, nuts and seeds-as well as the ratio of vegetable oils to animal fat and red and processed meat was developed (range: 0-8 points). Three DPs were identified in a Principal Component Analysis: 'Prudent', 'Non-healthy', 'Dressings and sweetened-low-fat dairy'. In a multiple logistic regression analysis, two models were created: crude, and adjusted for age, sex, type of cancer, Body Mass Index (BMI), socioeconomic status (SES) index, overall physical activity, smoking status and alcohol abuse. The risk of breast or lung cancer was lower in the average (3-5 points) and high (6-8 points) levels of the 'Polish-aMED' score compared to the low (0-2 points) level by 51% (odds ratio (OR): 0.49; 95% confidence interval (Cl): 0.30-0.80;
< 0.01; adjusted) and 63% (OR: 0.37; 95% Cl: 0.21-0.64;
< 0.001; adjusted), respectively. In the middle and upper tertiles compared to the bottom tertile of the 'Prudent' DP, the risk of cancer was lower by 38-43% (crude) but was not significant after adjustment for confounders. In the upper compared to the bottom tertile of the 'Non-healthy' DP, the risk of cancer was higher by 65% (OR: 1.65; 95% Cl: 1.05-2.59;
< 0.05; adjusted). In conclusion, the Polish adaptation of the Mediterranean diet could be considered for adults living in non-Mediterranean countries for the prevention of the breast or lung cancers. Future studies should explore the role of a traditional Mediterranean diet fitted to local dietary patterns of non-Mediterranean Europeans in cancer prevention.
Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men worldwide. Studies regarding dietary patterns (DPs) and lung cancer are limited, with results remaining inconclusive, and the association of ...DPs with lung cancer in smokers is unclear. This study analyzed the associations between DPs, including the Polish-adapted Mediterranean diet (Polish-aMED) score, and lung cancer risk in Polish adult male smokers. This case-control study involved 439 men aged 45-80 years from northeastern Poland, including 187 newly diagnosed lung cancer cases. Dietary data was collected with a 62-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ-6). Two approaches were applied to identify dietary patterns. The Polish-aMED score was calculated (hypothesis-driven approach) and a principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify PCA-driven DPs (data-driven approach). A logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the lung cancer risk associated with the adherence to DPs overall as well as for moderate (2.5-11 pack-years) and heavy (>11 pack-years) smokers. Among moderate smokers, the risk of lung cancer was lower by 41% (OR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.39-0.90;
< 0.05; adjusted model) in the higher adherence to the prudent DP when compared to the lower adherence, and by 66% (OR: 0.34; 95% CI: 0.15-0.76;
< 0.05; adjusted model) in the high adherence (7-9 points) to the Polish-aMED score when compared to the low adherence (0-3 points). No significant association between the westernized traditional DP or the sweet dairy DP and lung cancer was revealed. In conclusion, the current study suggests that pro-healthy dietary patterns, including the Mediterranean pattern, may favour lower risk of lung cancer in moderate smokers, although it was not confirmed in heavy smokers.
Lung cancer is the most common and deadly form of cancer worldwide, especially in men. The 2018 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) updated cancer prevention ...recommendations, and a standard scoring system (2018 WCRF/AICR Score) was published. The purpose of this study was to develop the adapted version of the 2018 WCRF/AICR Score with respect to lung cancer prevention recommendation (Ad-LC WCRF/AICR Score) and to examine the association between lung cancer risk in men and the Ad-LC WCRF/AICR Score as well as its single components. A case–control study was conducted among 439 men aged 45–80 years (187 controls, 252 primary lung cancer cases). Lifestyle and dietary data were collected with a questionnaire including the 62-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ-6®). The Ad-LC WCRF/AICR Score was used as a categorized and continuous variable. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for lung cancer risk were calculated with the partly and fully adjusted model. One component of the score was independently associated with a lower risk of lung cancer in men, regardless of the set of confounders used. In the fully adjusted model following the recommendation “Limit smoking” was associated with a lower risk of lung cancer—in the never smokers by 87% (OR: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.04–0.37; p = 0.0002) and in the moderate smokers by 45% (OR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.33–0.91; p = 0.0189) compared with the heavy smokers as a reference. By adding the single components making up the Ad-LC WCRF/AICR Score, the combination of three components or more, reducing the risk of lung cancer compared to lower compliance as a reference by 45% to 78% and by 39% to 66% for intermediate compliance (except two models out of seven) and higher compliance, respectively. In the fully adjusted model, the risk of lung cancer for the total Ad-LC WCRF/AICR Score was lower by 47% (OR: 0.53; 95% CI: 0.32–0.88; p = 0.0129) in higher compliance with the score compared to those with the lower compliance. Each one-point increase in the Ad-LC WCRF/AICR Score reduced lung cancer risk by 34% (OR: 0.66; 95% CI: 0.45–0.95; p = 0.0267). The results support previous evidence that limiting smoking reduces the risk of lung cancer in men. It also provides an insight into cancer research by showing that following the combined 2018 cancer prevention recommendations related to diet, lifestyle and body fatness was associated with a lower risk of lung cancer in men.
The aim of the study was twofold: (1) the qualitative adaptation of the 2018 WCRF/AICR (QAd-WCRF/AICR) score, and (2) the assessment of the association between the level of compliance with the ...WCRF/AICR recommendations and the occurrence of breast cancer in peri- and postmenopausal women.
This case-control study involved 420 women, aged 40-79 years, from northeastern Poland, including 190 newly diagnosed breast cancer cases. Data related to the WCRF/AICR recommendations were collected in face-to-face interviews with 409 women, including 179 women with breast cancer. The frequency of food consumption data were collected using the FFQ-6
and KomPAN
questionnaires. Body weight, height, and waist circumference were measured. The QAd-WCRF/AICR score (range: 0-8 points) was calculated on the basis of eight components, including two components from to the WCRF/AICR recommendations: (1) body mass index (BMI), and (2) waist circumference, with six components expressed qualitatively: (3) overall physical activity, as well as the frequency of the consumption of (4) vegetables/fruits/whole grains/nuts/seeds/legumes, (5) highly processed foods, including fast foods/sweets/instant soups, (6) red/processed meat, (7) sweetened/energy drinks, and (8) alcohol. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the occurrence of breast cancer.
The moderate (4-5 points) and maximal (6-8 points) compliance with the qualitative adaptation of the WRCF/AICR recommendations reduced the odds of breast cancer by 54% and 72%, respectively, compared to the results noted for minimal compliance (≤3 points). Lower odds of breast cancer were associated with moderate or high physical activity, consumption of a minimum of four serving per day of vegetables/fruits/whole grains/nuts/seeds/legumes, and limiting the consumption of highly processed food/fast foods and red/processed meat to a maximum of 1-3 times/month. Higher odds of breast cancer were associated with a higher waist circumference and alcohol abstinence.
These findings may prove useful in establishing cancer prevention recommendations based on simple suggestions regarding the frequency of food consumption.
