Man weib
In addition to what I have read about mausoleums and their respective traditions in the works of F. W. Hasluck and Tih. R. Đorđević, I have also seen many mausoleums and recorded numerous traditions ...in person, and the tradition as concerns a modest mausoleum in Upper Srebrenik is unlike any of the ones I have heard before, hence deeming it appropriate to publish it separately.

A peculiar form of ritual kinships is found among the Serbs in a restricted area in northeastern Yugoslavia, which is established by a symbolic rite of adoption called `clothing' (oblacenje), ...performed as a complex mortuary ceremony after the death of a young person. In this rite, an individual of the same sex & approximate age as the deceased is selected as a ritual substitute for him (or her), is given his clothing, & thereafter assumes certain fictive kinship bonds with his fam. The person adopted in this way retains his previous personal status in his original fam. Ethnographic literature & field data show that this custom exists only in northeastern Serbia proper & in southeastern Banat in the province of Vojvodina. The Rumanians living in that area also practice the custom. It is observed that the custom was adopted from the Serbs. In Banat the emphasis is placed on ritual kin ties established between the recipient of the clothing & the members of the fam of the deceased, but in the region south of the Danube it is placed on the relation established with the deceased. It is a common fact that in societies having matrilocal residence and matrilineal kinship system the status of women is rather favorable. Nevertheless even in such societies village or group ...headmanship as well as political and war leadership belong to male members of the community. It occurs, on the other side, that in patrilineal and patrilocal societies women function as village heads or leaders. Women in these functions were to be found among the Balkan peoples too: among the Romanic Vlahs and the Slavic Serbs and Macedonians and probably also among the Albanians. By the end of the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th century there were in Western Macedonia, in the region of Debar, female village heads a quite common feature. The author presents several such cases. These women were real and fully authorized village heads, having and exercizing all and the same rights, prerogatives and duties as their male fellows in other villages. They were also assisted by two aza (assistants) and the council of village elders (starci), all of them being male. Women were elected for this office primarily by reason of scarcity of able and vigorous men, since almost all grown ups and healthy men usually were out of the village in order to earn living abroad. Another reason for this phenomenon played also a considerable part. It was the motif of passive defense from the Albanians, who were a great danger and annoyance to their Christian neighbors in Macedonia: according to the Albanian customary law women were safe and unassailable, and election of women in village headmanship was for Christian peasants a form of self-defense. The author established that women as village heads were to be found also in Serbian regions, e. g. in the districts of Pristina (Kosovo) and Prizren, then in the regions of Južno Pomoravlje (the drainage area of the river of Southern Morava) and Šumadija: according to scarce data several women acted as village heads especially during the Bulgarian occupation in 1915-8.

The Serbo-Croatian Moslems also have the Oriental Moslem tradition of Dadjdjal the Moslem Antichrist, as well as the tradition of the Biblical Gog and Magog, According to a Bosnian folk belief. ...Dadjdjal, Gog and Magog are in a citadel, surrounded by a wall and called "Ćin i Maćin”, as Bosnian Moslems pronounce the names China and Manchou, used both for the two nations and their countries. In the author’s opinion the motif of the Chinese Wall came independently of the myth of Dadjdjal into Bosnia, where it became a part of that myth. By the way and as an argument the author presents the fact that several motifs from the medieval novel of Alexander the Great, have penetrated even into the folk tradition of the Bosnian Serb; this tradition now contains a motif of Russia as a far distant country having built a great wall in order to defend itself from the Cynocephals.

Livii Ab Urbe condita libri, V, 47).
