TeV γ-rays from the BL Lac object 1ES 1959+650 have been measured during the years 2000 and 2001 with a significance of 5.2 σ at a value of 5.3% of the Crab flux and in May 2002 during strong ...outbursts with >$23\,\sigma$ at a flux level of up to 2.2 Crab, making 1ES 1959+650 the TeV Blazar with the third best event statistics. The deep observation of 197.4 h has been performed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT system). 1ES 1959+650 is located at a redshift of $z = 0.047$, providing an intermediate distance between the nearby Blazars Mkn 421 and Mkn 501, and the much more distant object H1426+428. This makes 1ES 1959+650 an important member of the class of TeV Blazars in view of the absorption of TeV photons by the diffuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The differential energy spectrum of 1ES 1959+650 during the flares can be fitted by a power law with a spectral index of $2.83 \pm 0.14_{\mbox{\tiny stat}} \pm 0.08_{\mbox{\tiny sys}}$ or by a power law with an exponential cut-off at $(4.2^{+0.8}_{-0.6~{\mbox{\tiny stat}}} \pm 0.9_{\mbox{\tiny sys}})$ TeV and a spectral index of $1.83 \pm 0.15_{\mbox{\tiny stat}} \pm 0.08_{\mbox{\tiny sys}}$. The low state differential energy spectrum obtained with lower statistics can be described by a pure power law with a spectral index of $3.18 \pm 0.17_{\mbox{\tiny stat}} \pm 0.08_{\mbox{\tiny sys}}$.
The central region of the Milky Way is one of the foremost locations to look for dark matter (DM) signatures. We report the first results on a search for DM particle annihilation signals using new ...observations from an unprecedented gamma-ray survey of the Galactic Center (GC) region, i.e., the Inner Galaxy Survey, at very high energies (& GSIM;100 GeV) performed with the H.E.S.S. array of five ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. No significant gamma-ray excess is found in the search region of the 2014-2020 dataset and a profile likelihood ratio analysis is carried out to set exclusion limits on the annihilation cross section (sigma v). Assuming Einasto and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) DM density profiles at the GC, these constraints are the strongest obtained so far in the TeV DM mass range. For the Einasto profile, the constraints reach (sigma v) values of 3.7 x 10-26 cm3 s-1 for 1.5 TeV DM mass in the W+W- annihilation channel, and 1.2 x 10-26 cm3 s-1 for 0.7 TeV DM mass in the tau+tau- annihilation channel. With the H.E.S.S. Inner Galaxy Survey, ground-based gamma-ray observations thus probe (sigma v) values expected from thermal-relic annihilating TeV DM particles.
The inability to detect atrial activity limits implantable ventricular cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) in discriminating tachycardias and can result in inappropriate therapy. This study attempted ...to detect atrial activity on the wide-spaced bipole signals formed by the high-voltage (HV) leads of the ICD during device implantation and to develop an algorithm for the detection of atrial fibrillation (AFib) from these signals. The authors used a method that cancelled ventricular and correlated atrial activity from the HV lead signals and measured frequency and amplitude distribution information to discriminate sinus rhythm (SR) and AFib segments. The authors analyzed 186 data segments from 21 patients (six AFib, 14 SR, one AFib and SR). For individual segments in this data set, the sensitivity of the algorithm was 78%, specificity 92.65%, positive and negative predictive values 79.59 and 91.97%, respectively. These results demonstrate that atrial activity is present in the HV lead signals, and AFib detection can be achieved in many, but not all cases, using information currently available to ICDs. Prior work from surface electrocardiograms suggests that this algorithm can function during ventricular tachycardias. However, specificity of the algorithm is not high enough for clinical use.
On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced ...Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of \(\sim 1.7\,{\rm{s}}\) with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of \({40}_{-8}^{+8}\) Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 \(\,{M}_{\odot }\). An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at \(\sim 40\,{\rm{Mpc}}\)) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One-Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ∼10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient’s position \(\sim 9\) and \(\sim 16\) days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC 4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta.
Fibrillatory waves on the surface ECG have been scrutinized to allow inferences about underlying mechanisms and pathophysiology, based on the premise that fibrillatory waves do not vary "randomly" ...but provide a consistent reflection of the underlying state of the atria in an individual patient. This premise is untested.
Ten standard ECGs were recorded over a 24-hour period in each of 20 clinically stable inpatients with atrial fibrillation. After QRS-T cancellation, the remainder fibrillatory waves were analyzed. Interpatient versus intrapatient differences in fibrillatory wave characteristics were evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The fibrillatory wave peak-to-peak amplitude of all the patients ranged from 0.06 to 0.35 mV, whereas 1 SD of the amplitude for each patient ranged from 0.004 to 0.053 mV. Short-term peak frequencies of all the patients ranged from 4.6 to 8.0 Hz, whereas 1 SD for each patient varied from 0.2 to 0.5 Hz. For these and all other parameters tested, interpatient differences were significantly greater compared to intrapatient differences (P < 0.0001).
Fibrillatory wave characteristics are repeatable from ECG to ECG over 24 hours for clinically stable patients, whereas substantial differences are present between patients. Further study of the relationship of such characteristics to pathophysiology and management decisions is valid and warranted.

We present the results of the most comprehensive survey of the Galactic plane in very high-energy (VHE) γ-rays, including a public release of Galactic sky maps, a catalog of VHE sources, and the ...discovery of 16 new sources of VHE γ-rays. The High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.) Galactic plane survey (HGPS) was a decade-long observation program carried out by the H.E.S.S. I array of Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia from 2004 to 2013. The observations amount to nearly 2700 h of quality-selected data, covering the Galactic plane at longitudes from ℓ = 250° to 65° and latitudes |b|≤ 3°. In addition to the unprecedented spatial coverage, the HGPS also features a relatively high angular resolution (0.08° ≈ 5 arcmin mean point spread function 68% containment radius), sensitivity (≲1.5% Crab flux for point-like sources), and energy range (0.2–100 TeV). We constructed a catalog of VHE γ-ray sources from the HGPS data set with a systematic procedure for both source detection and characterization of morphology and spectrum. We present this likelihood-based method in detail, including the introduction of a model component to account for unresolved, large-scale emission along the Galactic plane. In total, the resulting HGPS catalog contains 78 VHE sources, of which 14 are not reanalyzed here, for example, due to their complex morphology, namely shell-like sources and the Galactic center region. Where possible, we provide a firm identification of the VHE source or plausible associations with sources in other astronomical catalogs. We also studied the characteristics of the VHE sources with source parameter distributions. 16 new sources were previously unknown or unpublished, and we individually discuss their identifications or possible associations. We firmly identified 31 sources as pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), supernova remnants (SNRs), composite SNRs, or gamma-ray binaries. Among the 47 sources not yet identified, most of them (36) have possible associations with cataloged objects, notably PWNe and energetic pulsars that could power VHE PWNe.
An intrinsic gamma-ray burst afterglow
Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are emitted by relativistic jets generated during the collapse of a massive star in a distant galaxy. The GRB itself lasts only a ...few seconds but is followed by an afterglow that can persist for hours or days. The H.E.S.S. Collaboration observed the afterglow of GRB 190829A, a nearby long GRB. The proximity of this burst allowed it to be detected at tera–electron volt energies that would otherwise be absorbed in the intergalactic medium. By analyzing the spectrum and light curve at x-ray and gamma-ray wavelengths, the authors show that the afterglow cannot be explained by standard models.

Observations of a nearby gamma-ray burst at tera–electron volt energies cannot be explained by standard models.
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are bright flashes of gamma rays from extragalactic sources followed by fading afterglow emission, are associated with stellar core collapse events. We report the detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays from the afterglow of GRB 190829A, between 4 and 56 hours after the trigger, using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). The low luminosity and redshift of GRB 190829A reduce both internal and external absorption, allowing determination of its intrinsic energy spectrum. Between energies of 0.18 and 3.3 tera–electron volts, this spectrum is described by a power law with photon index of 2.07 ± 0.09, similar to the x-ray spectrum. The x-ray and VHE gamma-ray light curves also show similar decay profiles. These similar characteristics in the x-ray and gamma-ray bands challenge GRB afterglow emission scenarios.
Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel therapy used to ablate tumors with high-field electric pulses applied in short durations. It is important to reduce the generation of heat in IRE to ...avoid the harmful effects of thermal damage. The objective of this simulation study was to examine the effects of saline irrigation in the reduction of heat upon electrodes used in IRE treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. We used a two dimensional Finite Element Model of a tumor in a liver with electrodes placed at the center of the tumor. We simulated a typical electroporation protocol with varying thicknesses and conductivities of the saline layer, and we observed the maximum temperature and the distribution of the electric field and temperature in the tissue. Our results showed that the maximum temperature in the tissue decreases with the use of saline, but the surface area of the tumor that could potentially be thermally damaged may increase with the thickness and conductivity of the saline. With the use of saline, one can achieve upwards of a 17% reduction of the maximum temperature at the electrodes. Also, the distribution of temperature and the electric field becomes more homogenous between the electrodes as the conductivity of the saline layer increases for all thicknesses of saline. We conclude that irrigating electrodes with saline may be an effective measure to enhance the efficacy of irreversible electroporation by reducing the maximum temperature at the electrodes and also improving the extent and distribution of the electric field in the tissue. However, the properties of the saline should be adjusted so as to limit the increase of thermal damage propagated in the tissue.
