We assessed societal landslide and flood risk to the population of Italy. The assessment was conducted at the national (synoptic) and at the regional scales. For the assessment, we used an improved ...version of the catalogue of historical landslide and flood events that have resulted in loss of life, missing persons, injuries and homelessness in Italy, from 1850 to 2008. This is the recent portion of a larger catalogue spanning the 1941-year period from 68 to 2008. We started by discussing uncertainty and completeness in the historical catalogue, and we performed an analysis of the temporal and geographical pattern of harmful landslide and flood events, in Italy. We found that sites affected by harmful landslides or floods are not distributed evenly in Italy, and we attributed the differences to different physiographical settings. To determine societal risk, we investigated the distribution of the number of landslide and flood casualties (deaths, missing persons, and injured people) in Italy, and in the 20 Italian Regions. Using order statistics, we found that the intensity of a landslide or flood event - measured by the total number of casualties in the event - follows a general negative power law trend. Next, we modelled the empirical distributions of the frequency of landslide and flood events with casualties in Italy and in each Region using a Zipf distribution. We used the scaling exponent s of the probability mass function (PMF) of the intensity of the events, which controls the proportion of small, medium, and large events, to compare societal risk levels in different geographical areas and for different periods. Lastly, to consider the frequency of the events with casualties, we scaled the PMF obtained for the individual Regions to the total number of events in each Region, in the period 1950-2008, and we used the results to rank societal landslide and flood risk in Italy. We found that in the considered period societal landslide risk is largest in Trentino-Alto Adige and Campania, and societal flood risk is highest in Piedmont and Sicily.
Inundations and landslides are widespread phenomena in Italy, where they cause severe damage and pose a threat to the population. Little is known about the public perception of landslide and flood ...risk. This is surprising, as an accurate perception is important for the successful implementation of many risk reduction or adaptation strategies. In an attempt to address this gap, we have conducted two national surveys to measure the perception of landslide and flood risk amongst the population of Italy. The surveys were conducted in 2012 and 2013, and consisted of approximately 3100 computer-assisted telephone interviews for each survey. The samples of the interviewees were statistically representative for a national-scale quantitative assessment. The interviewees were asked questions designed to obtain information on (i) their perception of natural, environmental, and technological risks, (ii) direct experience or general knowledge of the occurrence of landslides and floods in their municipality, (iii) perception of the possible threat posed by landslides and floods to their safety, (iv) general knowledge on the number of victims affected by landslides or floods, and on (v) the factors that the interviewees considered important for controlling landslide and flood risks in Italy. The surveys revealed that the population of Italy fears technological risks more than natural risks. Of the natural risks, earthquakes were considered more dangerous than floods, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. Examination of the temporal and geographical distributions of the responses revealed that the occurrence of recent damaging events influenced risk perception locally, and that the perception persisted longer for earthquakes and decreased more rapidly for landslides and floods. We explain the difference by the diverse consequences of the risks. The interviewees considered inappropriate land management the main cause of landslide and food risk, followed by illegal construction, abandonment of the territory, and climate change. Comparison of the risk perception with actual measures of landslide and flood risk, including the number of fatal events, the number of fatalities, and the mortality rates, revealed that in most of the Italian regions, the perception of the threat did not match the long-term risk posed to the population by landslides and floods. This outcome points to a need to foster an understanding of the public towards landslide and flood hazards and risks in Italy.
Analyses of historical records of landslides and climate variables are useful tools to search for correlations between damaging landslide events and their triggers. In this work, we investigate the ...temporal and geographical relationships between two long-term historical series of catalogued landslide occurrences and daily rainfall data in Umbria, a central Italian region, from 1928 to 2001. Moreover, we search for changes in the frequency and density of landslides, and in the characteristics of the associated rainfall events. Using a consolidated approach, partially modified, we find that the rainfall events that have produced rainfall-induced landslides in Umbria changed in space and time during observation period and between two considered sub-periods (1928–1975 and 1976–2001). In particular, we find that: (i) the monthly distribution of landslides associated with rainfall events is quite different than that of all landslides in the regional catalogue; (ii) the spatial and temporal distribution of REL changed from the older (most events occurred in winter) to the recent period (most events occurred in autumn); (iii) the recent most rainfall events associated with landslides are characterized by a lower cumulated rainfall and a shorter duration, sign of an increased propensity of the regional territory to produce landslides over time.
Systematic and timely documentation of triggered (i.e. event) landslides is fundamental to build extensive datasets worldwide that may help define and/or validate trends in response to climate ...change. More in general, preparation of landslide inventories is a crucial activity since it provides the basic data for any subsequent analysis. In this work we present an event landslide inventory map (E-LIM) that was prepared through a systematic reconnaissance field survey in about 1 month after an extreme rainfall event hit an area of about 5000 km
in the Marche-Umbria regions (central Italy). The inventory reports evidence of 1687 triggered landslides in an area of ~550 km
. All slope failures were classified according to type of movement and involved material, and documented with field pictures, wherever possible. The database of the inventory described in this paper as well as the collection of selected field pictures associated with each feature is publicly available at figshare.
Ideal treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD) aims at relieving symptoms and slowing disease progression. Of all remedies, levodopa remains the most effective for symptomatic relief, but the medical ...need for neuroprotectant drugs is still unfulfilled. Safinamide, currently in phase III clinical trials for the treatment of PD, is a unique molecule with multiple mechanisms of action and a very high therapeutic index. It combines potent, selective, and reversible inhibition of MAO-B with blockade of voltage-dependent Na+ and Ca2+ channels and inhibition of glutamate release. Safinamide has neuroprotective and neurorescuing effects in MPTP-treated mice, in the rat kainic acid, and in the gerbil ischemia model. Safinamide potentiates levodopa-mediated increase of DA levels in DA-depleted mice and reverses the waning motor response after prolonged levodopa treatment in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats. Safinamide has excellent bioavailability, linear kinetics, and is suitable for once-a-day administration. Therefore, safinamide may be used in PD to reduce l-dopa dosage and also represents a valuable therapeutic drug to test disease-modifying potential.
The purpose of this study was to review our results in patients undergoing treatment with 4 percent formalin for radiation-induced injury to the rectum.
A retrospective review of office charts was ...performed, identifying all patients undergoing formalin treatment. Patient gender, initial malignancy, prior treatments, response to treatment with formalin, complications, and length of follow-up were reviewed. All patients had flexible endoscopy to assess for proximal sources of bleeding. The indication for treatment was a symptomatic patient with endoscopic evidence of radiation injury. A cotton pledget was used for direct application of 4 percent formalin to the affected area via a rigid proctoscope or anoscope. The treatment was repeated if blanching did not occur or if bleeding continued. Patients were followed up at three-week to four-week intervals and treatment was repeated based on the above indications. Treatments were continued until cessation of bleeding occurred or, when treatment failed, operative treatment was required.
Thirty-six patients were identified. Three were lost to follow-up. Symptoms included bleeding in all but one patient, who presented with an ulcer. There were 33 (26 male) patients. Seventeen (51.5 percent) patients had prior treatment. The number of formalin treatments ranged from 1 to 13, with a mean of 3.4. The follow-up ranged from 1 to 60 months, with a mean of 18 months. Twenty-nine (88 percent) patients had improvement or cessation of symptoms. Four (12 percent) patients failed treatment. Two patients were noted to have full-thickness ulcers and both failed formalin treatment. No complications were noted related to formalin treatment.
We conclude that formalin therapy is a safe and effective form of treatment that can be performed in the office with minimal discomfort and no complications. It can be performed multiple times until results are achieved. Formalin therapy may be useful as a first-line treatment for chronic radiation proctitis, however, a prospective controlled trial comparing modalities is required to prove this to be true.
We present a geomorphological method to evaluate landslide hazard and risk. The method is based on the recognition of existing and past landslides, on the scrutiny of the local geological and ...morphological setting, and on the study of site-specific and historical information on past landslide events. For each study area a multi-temporal landslide inventory map has been prepared through the interpretation of various sets of stereoscopic aerial photographs taken over the period 1941–1999, field mapping carried out in the years 2000 and 2001, and the critical review of site-specific investigations completed to solve local instability problems. The multi-temporal landslide map portrays the distribution of the existing and past landslides and their observed changes over a period of about 60 years. Changes in the distribution and pattern of landslides allow one to infer the possible evolution of slopes, the most probable type of failures, and their expected frequency of occurrence and intensity. This information is used to evaluate landslide hazard, and to estimate the associated risk. The methodology is not straightforward and requires experienced geomorphologists, trained in the recognition and analysis of slope processes. Levels of landslide hazard and risk are expressed using an index that conveys, in a simple and compact format, information on the landslide frequency, the landslide intensity, and the likely damage caused by the expected failure. The methodology was tested in 79 towns, villages, and individual dwellings in the Umbria Region of central Italy.
Abstract The 16p13.3p13.1 region has been reported as a “critical” hotspot region for recurrent microdeletions/duplications, which may contribute to epilepsy, learning difficulties and facial ...dysmorphisms. Cytogenetic and array-CGH analyses were performed because of the clinical characteristics of the patient. The girl showed de novo 16p13.3p13.13 duplication spanning a region of ∼5.3 Mb. She presented brain anomalies, intellectual disability, epilepsy, facial and vertebral dysmorphisms. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of 16p13.3p13.13 duplication; only three patients with an overlapping deletion in 16p13.2p13.13 were previously described. The duplicated region contains 21 OMIM genes and, six of them ( RBFOX1 , TMEM114 , ABAT , PMM2 , GRIN2A and, LITAF ) were found to be associated with known diseases. Although no duplication of these genes has been described in the literature, we discuss here if they had some role in determining phenotype of our patient.
Inverted duplications associated with terminal deletions are complex anomalies described in an increasing of chromosome ends. We report on the cytogenetic characterization of the first de novo inv ...dup del(4) with partial 4p duplication and 4q deletion in a girl with clinical signs consistent with “recombinant 4 syndrome”. This abnormality was suspected by banding, but high-resolution molecular cytogenetic investigations allowed us to define the breakpoints of the rearrangement. The terminal duplicated region extending from 4p15.1 to the telomere was estimated to be 29.27Mb, while the size of the terminal deletion was 3.114Mb in the 4q35.1 region. Until now, 10 patients with duplicated 4p14-p15 and deleted 4q35 chromosome 4 have been described. In all cases the abnormal chromosome 4 was derived from a pericentric inversion inherited from one of the parents. In conclusion, we have identified the first case of inv dup del(4) with normal parents suggesting that, often, terminal duplications or terminal deletions mask complex rearrangements.

This study evaluated the analgesic activity of NW-1029 in animal models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain (formalin test in mice, complete Freund's adjuvant and chronic constriction injury in rats) as well as in acute pain test (hot-plate and tail-flick in rats). Orally administered NW-1029 dose-dependently reduced cumulative licking time in the early and late phase of the formalin test (ED
50=10.1 mg/kg in the late phase). In the CFA model, NW-1029 reversed mechanical allodynia (von Frey test) after both i.p. and p.o. administration (ED
50=0.57 and 0.53 mg/kg), respectively. Similarly, NW-1029 reversed mechanical allodynia in the CCI model after both i.p. and p.o. administration yielding an ED
50 of 0.89 and 0.67 mg/kg, respectively. No effects were observed in the hot-plate and tail-flick tests up to 30 mg/kg p.o. The compound orally administered (0.1–10 mg/kg) was well tolerated, without signs of neurological impairment up to high doses (ED
50=470 and 245 mg/kg in rat and mice Rotarod test, respectively). These results indicate that NW-1029 has anti-nociceptive properties in models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain.
