Purpose
This study aims to explore the nature of the relationship between market orientation and business performance in the Portuguese hotel industry and to evaluate the mediating role of service ...quality in this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
A literature analysis on market orientation, service quality and hotel business performance was conducted. The structural model was developed, and the measurement scales’ items were generated. Working data were obtained by sending a survey to Portuguese hotel managers. A purification process was conducted, and the convergent and discriminant validity, as well the reliability, of the measurement models were assessed. The structural model was tested by conducting a path analysis, as well by evaluating the coefficient of determination (R2) and the predictive relevance indicator (Q2).
Findings
Research results show that market orientation has a positive direct effect on business performance. Moreover, results indicate that market orientation effects on business performance are mediated throughout the hotels’ ability to provide service quality.
Originality/value
Despite the large amount of research on market orientation, research on the hospitality sector has been conducted mainly using tools developed for the manufacturing and consumer goods sectors. On the other hand, little has been done to explore the nature of the mediating effect of service quality on the relationship between market orientation and business performance in the hotel industry. Moreover, despite the contribution of the tourism industry to the Portuguese gross domestic product, research on the hotel industry is scarce.
This paper presents new rotational and longitudinal symmetric self-clinching fasteners to fabricate reliable connections in busbars with low electrical resistance for energy distribution systems. ...Connections consist of form-closed joints that are hidden inside regions where two busbars overlap. The investigation into the fabrication and performance of the new self-clinched joints involved finite element modelling and experimentation to determine the required forces and to evaluate the electric current flow and the electrical resistance at different service temperatures. The original design of the joints that was proposed in a previous work was modified to account for busbar strips of copper and/or aluminum with similar or dissimilar thicknesses, connected by means of self-clinching fasteners made from the same materials of the busbars, instead of steel. The effectiveness of the new self-clinched joints was compared to that of conventional bolted joints that are included in the paper for reference purposes. The results show that rotational symmetric self-clinching fasteners yield lighter fabrication and more compact joints with a similar electrical resistance to that of bolted joints. They also show that longitudinal symmetric self-clinching fasteners aimed at replicating the resistance-seam-welding contact conditions yield a reduction in electrical resistance to values close to that of ideal joints, consisting of two strips in perfect contact and without contaminant or oxide films along their overlapped surfaces.
This paper introduces a new formability test based on double-action radial extrusion to characterize material formability in the three-dimensional to plane-stress material flow transitions that are ...found in bulk metal-formed parts. The presentation draws from a multidirectional tool, which was designed to convert the vertical press stroke into horizontal movement of the compression punches towards each other, aspects of experimental strain determination, fractography, and finite element analysis. Results show that three-dimensional to plane-stress material flow transitions at the radially extruded flanges lead to different modes of fracture (by tension and by shear) that may or may not be preceded by necking, such as in sheet metal forming. The new formability test also reveals adequate characteristics to characterize the failure limits of very ductile wrought and additively manufactured metallic materials, which cannot be easily determined by conventional upset compression tests, and to facilitate the identification of the instant of cracking and of the corresponding fracture strains by combination of the force vs. time evolutions with the in-plane strains obtained from digital image correlation.
This study seeks to study the relationship between market orientation and business performance and to evaluate the mediating effect of adopting a low-price strategy in this relationship in the hotel ...industry. A sample from the Spanish and Portuguese hotel industry is used. Results show that the effect of market orientation on business performance is positive and direct. On the other hand, the results do not confirm the mediating effect of a strategy based on low-price in the strength of this relationship. Moreover, results indicate that a price strategy based on low-price is negatively related to hotel business performance.

This article presents a double-sided injection lap riveting process for fixing two overlapped sheets with tubular rivets at room temperature. The rivets are injected by compression into the dovetail ...ring holes that are previously machined in both sheets, and, in contrast to other joining by plastic deformation processes making use of auxiliary elements, the resulting joints are hidden inside the sheets without material protrusions above or below their surfaces. The new process is applied in the fabrication of aluminum busbar joints for energy distribution systems, and comparisons are made against conventional bolted joints that were fabricated for reference purposes. The work combines experimentation and finite element modelling, and results allow concluding that, in addition to invisibility and savings in assembly space, there are important gains in the thermo-electrical performance of the new joints that are of paramount importance for electric distribution applications.
This paper presents a new mechanical joining process to assemble aluminum busbars in energy distribution systems. The process is based on the extension of injection lap riveting to the connection of ...busbars made from the same material as the rivets and requires redesigning the joints to ensure complete filling with good mechanical interlocking and appropriate contact pressures on the overlapping area. The experimental work was carried out in unit cells and involved the fabrication of the riveted joints and the evaluation of their electrical resistance at different service temperatures. Comparisons with the bolted joints that were fabricated and tested for reference purposes show that injection riveted joints provide lower values of electrical resistance and require much less space for assembly due to the absence of material protrusions above and below their surfaces. Numerical simulation with finite elements allows the relating of the reduction in electrical resistance with the changes in the electric current flow when the bolts are replaced by the new type of rivets. The experimental and numerical predictions revealed that the new type of rivets experience an increase in electrical resistance of up to 6 μΩ (30%) when the service temperature approaches 105 °C. Still, the resistance at this temperature (26.2 μΩ) is more than 3 times smaller than that of the bolted joints (80.5 μΩ).
Age-related decreases in muscle function lead to disabilities and are associated with negative health outcomes in older people. Although several physical tests can be used to assess physical ...performance, muscle strength, and power, their interpretation can be hampered by the ceiling effect of some of them. The aim of this study was to assess whether vertical jump tests are safe in terms of physical integrity and whether they are useful in assessing physical performance in forty-one robust older women. The investigation entailed an assessment of anthropometric characteristics, physical functioning tests (Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), sit-to-up 5 times and sit-to-up 30 s, gait speed, time-up-to-go test (TUGT)), and tests evaluating muscle strength and power (handgrip, lower limb isokinetic tests, and vertical jumping tests). Significant negative correlations were found between vertical jumping tests and BMI, body fat percentage, sit-to-up 5 times and TUGT. In addition, significant positive correlations were observed between vertical jumping tests and SPPB, gait speed, handgrip, and concentric isokinetic tests of knee muscles. No adverse events in volunteers' physical integrity were reported during and after the performance of all physical tests. Thus, the study results showed that vertical jumping tests are safe and accurate for assessing physical performance and are useful for monitoring age-related loss of muscle performance in robust older women.
The formability limits of bulk metal forming in principal strain space and in the effective strain vs. stress-triaxiality space are characterized by an uncertainty region in which cracks may be ...triggered by tension (mode I of fracture mechanics) or by out-of-plane shear (mode III). The problem in obtaining experimental data in this region has been known for a long time and the main objective of this paper is to present a new upset formability test geometry that can effectively contribute to the characterization of the formability limits of bulk metal forming parts subjected to biaxial tension. Alongside with this objective, this paper also presents an analytical expression for converting the fracture forming limit line corresponding to crack opening by mode III in principal strain space into a hyperbolic fracture limit curve in the effective strain vs. stress-triaxiality space. The overall methodology employed by the authors combines experimentation along with analytical and numerical modelling, and the contents of the paper is a step towards diminishing the actual lack of knowledge regarding failure by fracture in bulk metal forming parts subject to stress-triaxiality values beyond uniaxial tension. Results show that a new uncoupled ductile fracture criterion built upon combination of the integrands of the Cockcroft-Latham and McClintock criteria can be successfully used to model the physics of the bulk metal forming limits for the entire range of stress-triaxiality values corresponding to cracking on free surfaces.

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro activity of the crude extracts obtained from Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. (Jucá), Cinnamomum cassia B. (Cinnamon), Mallow sylvestris L. (Mallow), Punica granatum L. (Pomegranate), Rosmarinus officinalis L. (Rosemary), Aeolanthus suaveolens (Als.) Spreng. (Macassá), Sysygium aromaticum L. (Clove), and Tamarindus indica L. (Tamarind) against oral microorganisms (e.g., Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Parvimonas micra) that produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). The pure extracts were placed in culture medium for the diffusion test in agar. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined by the microdilution method, and microbial growth was assayed with resazurin. Total polyphenols in the extracts were measured by using the Prussian Blue Method. For the salivary sediment test, the sediments were exposed to the Jucá and Pomegranate extracts, which was followed by incubation and organoleptic measurements with a monitor (Halimeter®) at 1-, 2-, 4-, and 24 -h intervals. The diffusion test revealed mixed results for the extracts. When the zone of inhibition was present, it ranged from 1.6–10.3 mm. The Pomegranate extract was the only extract that inhibited all the evaluated microorganisms; the MIC values ranged from 50 to 400 μg/mL. The Pomegranate and Jucá extracts presented higher levels of polyphenols, 7.3 % and 3.9 %, respectively, and less VSC formation as compared to the negative control. In conclusion, the extracts display antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms. The investigated plants have the potential to reduce the main substances related to halitosis of oral origin.
