The Altiplano region of the South American Andes is marked by an inhospitable climate to which the autochthonous human populations adapted and then developed great ancient civilizations, such as the ...Tiwanaku culture and the Inca Empire. Since pre-Columbian times, different rulers established themselves around the Titicaca and Poopo Lakes. By the time of the arrival of Spaniards, Aymara and Quechua languages were predominant on the Altiplano under the rule of the Incas, although the occurrence of other spoken languages, such as Puquina and Uruquilla, suggests the existence of different ethnic groups in this region. In this study, we focused on the pre-Columbian history of the autochthonous Altiplano populations, particularly the Uros ethnic group, which claims to directly descend from the first settlers of the Andes, and some linguists suggest they might otherwise be related to Arawak speaking groups from the Amazon. Using phylogeographic, population structure and spatial genetic analyses of Y-chromosome and mtDNA data, we inferred the genetic relationships among Uros populations (Los Uros from Peru, Uru-Chipaya and Uru-Poopo from Bolivia), and compared their haplotype profiles with eight Aymara, nine Quechua and two Arawak (Machiguenga and Yanesha) speaking populations from Peru and Bolivia. Our results indicated that Uros populations stand out among the Altiplano populations, while appearing more closely related to the Aymara and Quechua from Lake Titicaca and surrounding regions than to the Amazon Arawaks. Moreover, the Uros populations from Peru and Bolivia are genetically differentiated from each other, indicating a high heterogeneity in this ethnic group. Finally, our results support the distinctive ancestry for the Uros populations of Peru and Bolivia, which are likely derived from ancient Andean lineages that were partially replaced during more recent farming expansion events and the establishment of complex civilizations in the Andes.

Why teach English in Chile? Dominant public discourse claims for economic development, but with limited social mobility, do students from differing socio-economic groups perceive the same need? ...Recognising the influence of student belief systems on language acquisition, clashing language orientations could be creating unfavourable classroom environments. Thus, this study set out to identify the language orientations that secondary students recognise and hold in relation to the study of English with the purpose of helping English as foreign language (EFL) teachers become aware of the plurality of student perceptions. This was a qualitative multiple-case study which utilised a card-sorting technique paired with hierarchical cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling (MDS) to identify the language orientations and their constructs and semi-structured interviews and classroom observations for verification. Whilst the language orientations students recognise and hold were found to be similar across socio-economic lines, an important issue is the divergence identified between the language orientations associated with the classroom and those that represent student interests, which could be explained due to the lack of intentional and conscious dialogue about the purpose of the classroom curriculum. Vision planning is proposed as a tool for teachers to address this breach between students and classroom curriculum. Summary
This study focuses on the genetic history of the Quechua‐Lamistas, inhabitants of the Lamas Province in the San Martin Department, Peru, who speak their own distinct variety of the Quechua ...family of languages. It has been suggested that different pre‐Columbian ethnic groups from the Peruvian Amazonia, like the Motilones or “shaven heads”, assimilated the Quechua language and then formed the current native population of Lamas. However, many Quechua‐Lamistas claim to be direct descendants of the Chankas, a famous pre‐Columbian indigenous group that escaped from Inca rule in the Andes. To investigate the Quechua‐Lamistas and Chankas’ ancestries, we compared uniparental genetic profiles (17 STRs of Q‐M3 Y‐chromosome and mtDNA complete control region haplotypes) among autochthonous Amazonian and Andean populations from Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. The phylogeographic and population genetic analyses indicate a fairly heterogeneous ancestry for the Quechua‐Lamistas, while they are closely related to their neighbours who speak Amazonian languages, presenting no direct relationships with populations from the region where the ancient Chankas lived. On the other hand, the genetic profiles of self‐identified Chanka descendants living in Andahuaylas (located in the Apurimac Department, Peru, in the Central Andes) were closely related to those living in Huancavelica and the assumed Chanka Confederation area before the Inca expansion.
Background
Medullary sponge kidney (MSK) disease predisposes patients to recurrent nephrolithiasis, which affects one in every 5000 people in the United States.
Methods
We report a rare case of a ...pediatric recipient of a living donor MSK transplant and discuss considerations when discussing risks and benefits of accepting MSK allografts for this population.
Results
The recipient was admitted due to concerns for nephrolithiasis, hydronephrosis, and urinary tract infection at 1‐month post‐transplant. The hydronephrosis was resolved by surgical removal of an encrusted ureteral stent; this was followed by supplementation with oral medications to prevent future episodes of nephrolithiasis. The recipient did not have any further episodes after this as seen at a 1‐year follow‐up. The donor has remained well through this period.
Conclusions
With increasing organ shortages, the use of variety of donors may need to be considered to enlarge the organ pool.
Modafinil (MOD) it has to be considered as a wake-inducing drug to treat sleep disorders such as excessive sleepiness in narcolepsy, shift-work disorder, and obstructive/sleep apnea syndrome. Current ...evidence suggests that MOD induces waking involving the dopamine D1 receptor. However, little is known regarding the molecular elements linked in the wake-promoting actions of MOD. Since the D1 receptor activates the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP-K) cascade, it raises the interesting possibility that effects of MOD would depend upon the activation of MAP-K. Here we tested the expression of MAP-K in hypothalamus as well as pons after the microinjection of MOD (10 or 20 μg/1 μL) in rats into anterior hypothalamus, a wake-inducing brain area. Intrahypothalamic injections of MOD promoted MAP-K phosphorylation in hypothalamus and pons. Taken together, these results suggest that the wake-inducing compound MOD promotes the MAP-K phosphorylation.
Many single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the non-recombining region of the human Y chromosome have been described in the last decade. High-coverage sequencing has helped to characterize new ...SNPs, which has in turn increased the level of detail in paternal phylogenies. However, these paternal lineages still provide insufficient information on population history and demography, especially for Native Americans. The present study aimed to identify informative paternal sublineages derived from the main founder lineage of the Americas-haplogroup Q-L54-in a sample of 1841 native South Americans. For this purpose, we used a Y-chromosomal genotyping multiplex platform and conventional genotyping methods to validate 34 new SNPs that were identified in the present study by sequencing, together with many Y-SNPs previously described in the literature. We updated the haplogroup Q phylogeny and identified two new Q-M3 and three new Q-L54*(xM3) sublineages defined by five informative SNPs, designated SA04, SA05, SA02, SA03 and SA29. Within the Q-M3, sublineage Q-SA04 was mostly found in individuals from ethnic groups belonging to the Tukanoan linguistic family in the northwest Amazon, whereas sublineage Q-SA05 was found in Peruvian and Bolivian Amazon ethnic groups. Within Q-L54*, the derived sublineages Q-SA03 and Q-SA02 were exclusively found among Coyaima individuals (Cariban linguistic family) from Colombia, while Q-SA29 was found only in Maxacali individuals (Jean linguistic family) from southeast Brazil. Furthermore, we validated the usefulness of several published SNPs among indigenous South Americans. Humanity has used propolis since ancient times, and its use as a food supplement has significantly increased. Several reports on propolis´ biological activity and toxicity have highlighted its ...anti‐inflammatory properties, unlike many natural food supplements. This review addresses the anti‐inflammatory roles of Brazilian green, brown, and red propolis produced by Apis mellifera, their extracts, isolated compounds, and their mode of action. Despite advances in anti‐inflammatory therapies, the development of inflammatory processes in several diseases has been a concern for centuries. Demands for new anti‐inflammatory drugs have led to studies on propolis products as diet components to treat and prevent inflammatory disorders. Brazilian green, brown, and red propolis are alternatives for obtaining extracts and compounds of valuable anti‐inflammatory properties.
Practical applications
Currently, propolis is a food supplement, and to the best of our knowledge, several studies have shown that despite advances in anti‐inflammatory therapies, the inflammatory process continues to be a significant concern. However, due to the demand for new anti‐inflammatory drugs, propolis products as dietary components can be used to treat and prevent inflammatory disorders.
El <<Síndrome de quemarse por el trabajo>> (burnout) (en adelante SQT) ha sido definido como una respuesta al estrés laboral crónico al que están sometidos los profesionales de servicio que trabajan ...en contacto directo con humanos. En las investigaciones realizadas sobre el SQT, el instrumento para la medición que más se ha utilizado es el Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Pero, este instrumento presenta insuficiencias psicométricas, y otros instrumentos de evaluación del SQT no operacionalizan de manera adecuada la definición del síndrome. Las insuficiencias en los instrumentos utilizados en la actualidad para la evaluación del SQT han llevado al desarrollo del <<Cuestionario para la Evaluación del Síndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo>> (CESQT). El CESQT está formado por cuatro dimensiones denominadas: 1. Ilusión por el trabajo, definida como el deseo del individuo de alcanzar las metas laborales porque supone una fuente de placer personal. 2. Desgaste psíquico, definida como la aparición de agotamiento emocional y físico debido a que en el trabajo se tiene que tratar a diario con personas que presentan o causan problemas. 3. Indolencia, definida como la aparición de actitudes negativas de indiferencia y cinismo hacia los clientes de la organización. 4. Culpa, definida como la aparición de sentimientos de culpa por el comportamiento y las actitudes negativas desarrolladas en el trabajo, en especial hacia las personas con la que se establecen relaciones laborales. El objetivo de este estudio es la validación del CESQT en maestros mexicanos de educación básica. Se hipotetizó un modelo de cuatro factores como el del modelo original. Material y método La muestra la formaron 698 profesores de educación primaria de escuelas públicas. Según el género, 133 participantes fueron hombres (19.10%) y 541 mujeres (77.50%). En 24 cuestionarios (3.40%) no se respondió a la pregunta sobre el género. Asimismo, se aplicó el <<Cuestionario para la Evaluación del Síndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo>>, en su versión para profesionales que trabajan en la educación (CESQT-PE). Es importante señalar que bajas puntuaciones en ilusión por el trabajo (cinco reactivos, (α=.76), junto a altas puntuaciones en desgaste psíquico (cuatro reactivos, (α=.82), indolencia (seis reactivos, α=.73) y en Culpa (cinco reactivos, α=.79) indican altos niveles del SQT. El cuestionario se aplicó en 51 escuelas. Resultados Para todos los reactivos la homogeneidad corregida fue alta, con valores superiores a .40. El modelo factorial obtuvo un ajuste adecuado a los datos para la muestra: Chi²(164) = 481.01 (p<.001), AGFI = .91, RMSEA=.055, NNFI = .91, CFI = .92 y ECVI(.60-6.16) = .86. Los resultados confirmaron la hipótesis formulada. Todas las cargas factoriales resultaron significativas con valores altos, superiores a .50. Discusión Los valores de homogeneidad corregida obtenidos para los reactivos son relativamente altos, lo que indica que cada una de las dimensiones del CESQT-PE se puede considerar como una función lineal de los reactivos que la componen. Los resultados han confirmado la estructura factorial hipotetizada. La estructura de cuatro factores ha alcanzado el ajuste del modelo a través de diversos índices de ajuste considerados. Todas las dimensiones presentan valores adecuados de consistencia interna. Los valores de asimetría también han sido buenos para las subescalas, excepto para la subescala de Ilusión por el trabajo que ha excedido ligeramente el criterio de ±1. Los resultados del estudio contribuyen a la validación psicométrica del modelo teórico de cuatro dimensiones origen del cuestionario, y a la validación transnacional del instrumento, y permiten concluir que el CESQT, en su versión para profesionales de la educación (CESQT-PE), resulta un instrumento fiable y válido para evaluar el SQT en México.
