Combining the precise parallaxes and optical photometry delivered by Gaia’s second data release with the photometric catalogues of Pan-STARRS1, 2MASS, and AllWISE, we derived Bayesian stellar ...parameters, distances, and extinctions for 265 million of the 285 million objects brighter than G = 18. Because of the wide wavelength range used, our results substantially improve the accuracy and precision of previous extinction and effective temperature estimates. After cleaning our results for both unreliable input and output data, we retain 137 million stars, for which we achieve a median precision of 5% in distance, 0.20 mag in V-band extinction, and 245 K in effective temperature for G ≤ 14, degrading towards fainter magnitudes (12%, 0.20 mag, and 245 K at G = 16; 16%, 0.23 mag, and 260 K at G = 17, respectively). We find a very good agreement with the asteroseismic surface gravities and distances of 7000 stars in the Kepler, K2-C3, and K2-C6 fields, with stellar parameters from the APOGEE survey, and with distances to star clusters. Our results are available through the ADQL query interface of the Gaia mirror at the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (gaia.aip.de) and as binary tables at data.aip.de. As a first application, we provide distance- and extinction-corrected colour-magnitude diagrams, extinction maps as a function of distance, and extensive density maps. These demonstrate the potential of our value-added dataset for mapping the three-dimensional structure of our Galaxy. In particular, we see a clear manifestation of the Galactic bar in the stellar density distributions, an observation that can almost be considered direct imaging of the Galactic bar.
We present a catalogue of 362 million stellar parameters, distances, and extinctions derived from
Gaia
’s Early Data Release (EDR3) cross-matched with the photometric catalogues of Pan-STARRS1, ...SkyMapper, 2MASS, and AllWISE. The higher precision of the
Gaia
EDR3 data, combined with the broad wavelength coverage of the additional photometric surveys and the new stellar-density priors of the
StarHorse
code, allows us to substantially improve the accuracy and precision over previous photo-astrometric stellar-parameter estimates. At magnitude
G
= 14 (17), our typical precisions amount to 3% (15%) in distance, 0.13 mag (0.15 mag) in
V
-band extinction, and 140 K (180 K) in effective temperature. Our results are validated by comparisons with open clusters, as well as with asteroseismic and spectroscopic measurements, indicating systematic errors smaller than the nominal uncertainties for the vast majority of objects. We also provide distance- and extinction-corrected colour-magnitude diagrams, extinction maps, and extensive stellar density maps that reveal detailed substructures in the Milky Way and beyond. The new density maps now probe a much greater volume, extending to regions beyond the Galactic bar and to Local Group galaxies, with a larger total number density. We publish our results through an ADQL query interface (
gaia.aip.de
) as well as via tables containing approximations of the full posterior distributions. Our multi-wavelength approach and the deep magnitude limit render our results useful also beyond the next
Gaia
release, DR3.
Using combined asteroseismic and spectroscopic observations of 418 red-giant stars close to the Galactic disc plane (6 kpc < RGal ≲ 13 kpc, | ZGal| < 0.3 kpc), we measure the age dependence of the ...radial metallicity distribution in the Milky Way’s thin disc over cosmic time. The slope of the radial iron gradient of the young red-giant population (−0.058 ± 0.008 stat. ±0.003 syst. dex/kpc) is consistent with recent Cepheid measurements. For stellar populations with ages of 1−4 Gyr the gradient is slightly steeper, at a value of −0.066 ± 0.007 ± 0.002 dex/kpc, and then flattens again to reach a value of ~−0.03 dex/kpc for stars with ages between 6 and 10 Gyr. Our results are in good agreement with a state-of-the-art chemo-dynamical Milky-Way model in which the evolution of the abundance gradient and its scatter can be entirely explained by a non-varying negative metallicity gradient in the interstellar medium, together with stellar radial heating and migration. We also offer an explanation for why intermediate-age open clusters in the solar neighbourhood can be more metal-rich, and why their radial metallicity gradient seems to be much steeper than that of the youngest clusters. Already within 2 Gyr, radial mixing can bring metal-rich clusters from the innermost regions of the disc to Galactocentric radii of 5 to 8 kpc. We suggest that these outward-migrating clusters may be less prone to tidal disruption and therefore steepen the local intermediate-age cluster metallicity gradient. Our scenario also explains why the strong steepening of the local iron gradient with age is not seen in field stars. In the near future, asteroseismic data from the K2 mission will allow for improved statistics and a better coverage of the inner-disc regions, thereby providing tighter constraints on theevolution of the central parts of the Milky Way.

|< 1 ...kpc, and we also carry out the analysis for a foreground-cleaned subsample of 8000 stars that is more representative of the bulge–bar populations. These samples allow us to build chemo-dynamical maps of the stellar populations with vastly improved detail. The inner Galaxy shows an apparent chemical bimodality in key abundance ratios
α
/Fe, C/N, and Mn/O, which probe different enrichment timescales, suggesting a star formation gap (quenching) between the high- and low-
α
populations. Using a joint analysis of the distributions of kinematics, metallicities, mean orbital radius, and chemical abundances, we can characterize the different populations coexisting in the innermost regions of the Galaxy for the first time. The chemo-kinematic data dissected on an eccentricity–|
Z
|
max
plane reveal the chemical and kinematic signatures of the bar, the thin inner disc, and an inner thick disc, and a broad metallicity population with large velocity dispersion indicative of a pressure-supported component. The interplay between these different populations is mapped onto the different metallicity distributions seen in the eccentricity–|
Z
|
max
diagram consistently with the mean orbital radius and
V
ϕ
distributions. A clear metallicity gradient as a function of |
Z
|
max
is also found, which is consistent with the spatial overlapping of different populations. Additionally, we find and chemically and kinematically characterize a group of counter-rotating stars that could be the result of a gas-rich merger event or just the result of clumpy star formation during the earliest phases of the early disc that migrated into the bulge. Finally, based on 6D information, we assign stars a probability value of being on a bar orbit and find that most of the stars with large bar orbit probabilities come from the innermost 3 kpc, with a broad dispersion of metallicity. Even stars with a high probability of belonging to the bar show chemical bimodality in the
α
/Fe versus Fe/H diagram. This suggests bar trapping to be an efficient mechanism, explaining why stars on bar orbits do not show a significant, distinct chemical abundance ratio signature.
In the era of large-scale Galactic astronomy and multi-object spectroscopic stellar surveys, the sample sizes and the number of available stellar chemical abundances have reached dimensions in which ...it has become difficult to process all the available information in an effective manner. In this paper we demonstrate the use of a dimensionality-reduction technique (t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding; t-SNE) for analysing the stellar abundance-space distribution. While the non-parametric non-linear behaviour of this technique makes it difficult to estimate the significance of any abundance-space substructure found, we show that our results depend little on parameter choices and are robust to abundance errors. By reanalysing the high-resolution high-signal-to-noise solar-neighbourhood HARPS-GTO sample with t-SNE, we find clearer chemical separations of the high- and low-α/Fe disc sequences, hints for multiple populations in the high-α/Fe population, and indications that the chemical evolution of the high-α/Fe metal-rich stars is connected with the super-metal-rich stars. We also identify a number of chemically peculiar stars, among them a high-confidence s-process-enhanced abundance-ratio pair (HD 91345/HD 126681) with very similar ages and v X and v Y velocities, which we suggest have a common birth origin, possibly a dwarf galaxy. Our results demonstrate the potential of abundance-space t-SNE and similar methods for chemical-tagging studies with large spectroscopic surveys.
We address the problem of separating stars from galaxies in future large photometric surveys. We focus our analysis on simulations of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). In the first part of the paper, we ...derive the science requirements on star/galaxy separation, for measurement of the cosmological parameters with the gravitational weak lensing and large-scale structure probes. These requirements are dictated by the need to control both the statistical and systematic errors on the cosmological parameters, and by point spread function calibration. We formulate the requirements in terms of the completeness and purity provided by a given star/galaxy classifier. In order to achieve these requirements at faint magnitudes, we propose a new method for star/galaxy separation in the second part of the paper. We first use principal component analysis to outline the correlations between the objects parameters and extract from it the most relevant information. We then use the reduced set of parameters as input to an Artificial Neural Network. This multiparameter approach improves upon purely morphometric classifiers (such as the classifier implemented in SExtractor), especially at faint magnitudes: it increases the purity by up to 20 per cent for stars and by up to 12 per cent for galaxies, at i-magnitude fainter than 23.
Abstract
Understanding the formation and evolution of our Galaxy requires accurate distances, ages, and chemistry for large populations of field stars. Here, we present several updates to our ...spectrophotometric distance code, which can now also be used to estimate ages, masses, and extinctions for individual stars. Given a set of measured spectrophotometric parameters, we calculate the posterior probability distribution over a given grid of stellar evolutionary models, using flexible Galactic stellar-population priors. The code (called StarHorse) can accommodate different observational data sets, prior options, partially missing data, and the inclusion of parallax information into the estimated probabilities. We validate the code using a variety of simulated stars as well as real stars with parameters determined from asteroseismology, eclipsing binaries, and isochrone fits to star clusters. Our main goal in this validation process is to test the applicability of the code to field stars with known Gaia-like parallaxes. The typical internal precisions (obtained from realistic simulations of an APOGEE+Gaia-like sample) are ${\simeq } 8\,\,\rm{per\,\,cent}$ in distance, ${\simeq } 20\,\,\rm{per\,\,cent}$ in age, ${\simeq } 6\,\,\rm{per\,\,cent}$ in mass, and ≃ 0.04 mag in AV. The median external precision (derived from comparisons with earlier work for real stars) varies with the sample used, but lies in the range of ${\simeq } 0,2\,\,\rm{per\,\,cent}$ for distances, ${\simeq } 12,31\,\,\rm{per\,\,cent}$ for ages, ${\simeq } 4,12\,\,\rm{per\,\,cent}$ for masses, and ≃ 0.07 mag for AV. We provide StarHorse distances and extinctions for the APOGEE DR14, RAVE DR5, GES DR3, and GALAH DR1 catalogues.
We combine high-resolution spectroscopic data from APOGEE-2 survey Data Release 16 (DR16) with broad-band photometric data from several sources as well as parallaxes from
Gaia
Data Release 2 (DR2). ...Using the Bayesian isochrone-fitting code
StarHorse
, we derived the distances, extinctions, and astrophysical parameters for around 388 815 APOGEE stars. We achieve typical distance uncertainties of ∼6% for APOGEE giants, ∼2% for APOGEE dwarfs, and extinction uncertainties of ∼0.07 mag, when all photometric information is available, and ∼0.17 mag if optical photometry is missing.

The improvements in statistics as well as distance and extinction uncertainties unveil the presence of the bar in stellar density and the striking chemical duality in the innermost regions of the disc, which now clearly extend to the inner bulge. We complement this paper with distances and extinctions for stars in other public released spectroscopic surveys: 324 999 in GALAH DR2, 4 928 715 in LAMOST DR5, 408 894 in RAVE DR6, and 6095 in GES DR3.
In the last few decades, many efforts have been made to understand the effect of spiral arms on the gas and stellar dynamics in the Milky Way disc. One of the fundamental parameters of the spiral ...structure is its angular velocity, or pattern speed Ωp, which determines the location of resonances in the disc and the spirals’ radial extent. The most direct method for estimating the pattern speed relies on backward integration techniques, trying to locate the stellar birthplace of open clusters. Here, we propose a new method based on the interaction between the spiral arms and the stars in the disc. Using a sample of around 500 open clusters from the New Catalogue of Optically Visible Open Clusters and Candidates, and a sample of 500 giant stars observed by Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment, we find Ωp = 23.0 ± 0.5 km s−1 kpc−1, for a local standard of rest rotation V
0 = 220 km s−1 and solar radius R
0 = 8.0 kpc. Exploring a range in V
0 and R
0 within the acceptable values, 200–240 km s−1 and 7.5–8.5 kpc, respectively, results only in a small change in our estimate of Ωp, that is within the error. Our result is in close agreement with a number of studies which suggest values in the range 20–25 km s−1 kpc−1. An advantage of our method is that we do not need knowledge of the stellar age, unlike in the case of the birthplace method, which allows us to use data from large Galactic surveys. The precision of our method will be improved once larger samples of disc stars with spectroscopic information will become available thanks to future surveys such as 4MOST.
