NIKA (New IRAM KID Arrays) is a dual-band imaging instrument installed at the IRAM (Institut de RadioAstronomie Millimetrique) 30-meter telescope at Pico Veleta (Spain). Two distinct Kinetic ...Inductance Detectors (KID) focal planes allow the camera to simultaneous image a field-of-view of about 2 arc-min in the bands 125 to 175 GHz (150 GHz) and 200 to 280 GHz (240 GHz). The sensitivity and stability achieved during the last commissioning Run in June 2013 allows opening the instrument to general observers. We report here the latest results, in particular in terms of sensitivity, now comparable to the state-of-the-art Transition Edge Sensors (TES) bolometers, relative and absolute photometry. We describe briefly the next generation NIKA-2 instrument, selected by IRAM to occupy, from 2015, the continuum imager/polarimeter slot at the 30-m telescope.
In Italy the first occurrence of West Nile virus (WNV) infection was reported in Tuscany region during the late summer of 1998. In August 2008, the WNV infection re-emerged in Italy, in areas ...surrounding the Po river delta, and involving three regions Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto. WNV was isolated from blood and organs samples of one horse, one donkey, one pigeon (Columba livia) and three magpies (Pica pica). The phylogenetic analysis of the isolates, conducted on 255 bp in the region coding for the E protein, indicates that these isolates belong to the lineage I among the European strains. According to the analysis, both the 1998 and 2008 Italian strains as well as isolates from Romania, Russia, Senegal and Kenya fell in the same sub-cluster.
Between July and September 2002 there were outbreaks of bluetongue on three sheep holdings in the communities of San Gregorio Magno (Salerno, Campania), Laviano (Salerno, Campania) and Carpino ...(Foggia, Puglia), and the involvement of bluetongue virus (BTV) was confirmed serologically and virologically. The mortality rate was at least 11 per cent and involved BTV serotype 2 (BTV-2) and serotype 9 (BTV-9). These holdings were also surveyed for the Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) vectors; approximately 10,000 midges belonging to 15 species were captured, but they did not include a single specimen of the classical Afro-Asiatic bluetongue vector, Culicoides imicola. Species belonging to the Obsoletus complex dominated the light-trap collections, and Culicoides obsoletus Meigen, Culicoides scoticus Downes and Kettle and Culicoides dewulfi Goetghebuer constituted 90 per cent of all the Culicoides species captured. Fifty-six pools of the Obsoletus complex (excluding C dewulfi), each containing 100 individual midges and containing only parous and gravid females, were assayed for virus. BTV-2 was isolated from three pools from San Gregorio Magno and Carpino, and BTV-9 was isolated from one pool from Laviano. These results indicate that a species other than C imicola is involved in the current re-emergence of bluetongue in the Mediterranean Basin, but whether it is C obsoletus sensu stricto or C scoticus, or both, is uncertain.
The immunogenicity of two inactivated bluetongue virus serotype 8 (BTV‐8) vaccines was evaluated in 880 cattle under field conditions. The effect of selected factors on vaccine performance was also ...analysed at the herd and animal levels (vaccine, herd size and production, age, sex, time interval between vaccination and blood sampling and veterinary training). The immunogenicity elicited by vaccination with the two vaccines was monitored with the aid of a competitive enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (c‐ELISA) and serum neutralization test (SNT). To investigate whether the selected factors influenced seroconversion at the herd and animal levels, a multilevel logistic regression model developed in a mixed model was applied. Of the 880 cattle vaccinated, 76.0% yielded BTV c‐ELISA antibodies, whereas only 25.0% seroconverted based on SNT. Type of vaccine (odds ratio OR 4.5; 95% confidence interval CI, 2.2–9.0 for SNT and OR 3.5; 95% CI, 2.1–5.9 for c‐ELISA), veterinary training in vaccine administration (OR 8.1; 95% CI, 4.7–14.1 for SNT and OR 2.4; 95% CI, 1.3–4.2 for c‐ELISA), animal age (OR 1.4; 95% CI, 1.1–1.8 for SNT and OR 1.7; 95% CI, 1.4–2.1 for c‐ELISA) and days between first vaccine administration and blood collection (OR 1.9; 95% CI, 1.1–3.1 for SNT and OR 2.6; 95% CI, 1.7–3.8 for c‐ELISA) were the major factors affecting vaccine performance under field conditions. This is the first study to use multilevel logistic regression in the evaluation of selected risk factors affecting BTV‐8 vaccine performance in cattle.
We report on the detection of anhydrous hydrochloric acid (hydrogen chlorine, HCl) in the carbon-rich star IRC +10216 using the spectroscopic facilities onboard the Herschel satellite. Lines from J = ...1-0 up to J = 7-6 have been detected. From the observed intensities, we conclude that HCl is produced in the innermost layers of the circumstellar envelope with an abundance relative to H2 of 5 × 10-8 and extends until the molecules reach its photodissociation zone. Upper limits to the column densities of AlH, MgH, CaH, CuH, KH, NaH, FeH, and other diatomic hydrides have also been obtained.
Small foci of myocarditis (Fig. 2), mainly characterized by lymphocytes infiltrating the interstitial connective tissue, were detected in 4/24 WNV-infected animals (one in group A and three in group ...C).
West Nile virus (WNV) was detected in Italy, in late summer 2008 in horses and birds in the Po valley. As a consequence, an intense WNV surveillance was implemented in that area involving ...Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Lombardy. This paper presents the results of the September 2008–November 2009 surveillance on equines, mosquitoes, wild birds, dogs and cattle in Veneto. WNV was detected in equines and dogs, and, to a lesser extent in cattle and wild birds. Simultaneous circulation of Usutu virus was detected by testing wild birds found dead. Usutu virus but not WNV was also found in mosquitoes monitored during 2009. Equine practices monitoring allowed the definition of an area of WNV circulation and the 2008–2009 westward and northward spread of the infection. Although a relatively low number of human cases and a low virus circulation in vectors and birds detected in Veneto region could be considered favourable conditions for a limited risk of human exposure, it remains difficult to predict the possible evolution of the epidemiological situation.
The efficacy of a bivalent inactivated vaccine against bluetongue virus (BTV) serotypes 2 (BTV-2) and 4 (BTV-4) was evaluated in cattle by general and local examination, serological follow-up, and ...challenge. Thirty-two 4-month-old calves were randomly allocated into 2 groups of 16 animals each. One group was vaccinated subcutaneously (s/c) with two injections of bivalent inactivated vaccine at a 28-day interval, and the second group was left unvaccinated and used as control. 50/mL of an Italian field isolate of BTV serotype 4. Three additional calves were included in the study and used as sentinels to confirm that no BTV was circulating locally. At the time of the challenge, only one vaccinated animal did not have neutralizing antibodies against BTV-4, while the remaining 15 showed titres of at least 1:10 for either BTV-2 or BTV-4. However, the BTV-2 component of the inactivated vaccine elicited a stronger immune response in terms of both the number of virus neutralization (VN) positive animals and antibody titres. After challenge, no animal showed signs of disease. Similarly, none of the vaccinated animals developed detectable viraemia while bluetongue virus serotype 2 and 4 titres were detected in the circulating blood of all unvaccinated animals, commencing on day 3 post-challenge and lasting 16 days. It is concluded that administration of the bivalent BTV-2 and BTV-4 inactivated vaccine resulted in a complete prevention of detectable viraemia in all calves when challenged with high doses of BTV-2 or BTV-4.
