(1) Background: Previous evidence has indicated a connection between a Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular disease. However, evidence for subclinical markers of cardiovascular disease, such as ...arterial stiffness, is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the associations between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD), as assessed by the MEDAS-14 questionnaire, and arterial stiffness, as assessed by aortic pulse wave velocity, in healthy adults and according to sex. (2) A cross-sectional study including 386 healthy participants was performed in the EVasCu study. Adjusted and unadjusted differences in adherence to the MD and arterial stiffness were determined using Student’s t test and ANCOVA for the total sample and according to sex. (3) Results: Our results showed that individuals with a high adherence to the MD had a greater arterial stiffness, both in the total sample and in females, although this difference was not significant after adjusting for possible confounding variables, such as age. (4) Conclusions: Our findings indicated that, in the unadjusted analyses, healthy subjects with a high adherence to the MD showed a greater arterial stiffness. When these analyses were adjusted, no significant differences were shown in a-PWv according to the categories of MD adherence.
Increasingly, health professionals and patients have begun to be involved in eHealth interventions to assist in the self-management of hypertension. Therefore, this study was aimed at comparing the ...effect of different types of eHealth interventions (phone calls, blood pressure telemonitoring, emails, web-site, smartphone-app, short message service (SMS) and more than two eHealth interventions) on reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure, increasing adherence to medication treatment, improving physical activity compliance, controlling blood pressure, and improving quality of life (QoL).
A systematic search in MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science databases was conducted to identify experimental studies addressing the effect of eHealth interventions on the self-management of hypertension. Comparative evaluation of the eHealth interventions effect were performed by conducting a standard pairwise meta-analysis and a network meta-analysis for direct and indirect comparisons between eHealth interventions and control/non-intervention.
Fifty-one studies were included in the analysis showing a moderate effect size for more than two types of eHealth interventions (-0.46; 95%CI: -0.64, -0.27, p < 0.001 and -0.29; 95%CI: -0.46, -0.13, p < 0.001), phone calls (-0.37; 95%CI: -0.57, -0.17, p < 0.001 and -0.29; 95%CI: -0.52, -0.07, p = 0.011) and smartphone-app (-0.26; 95%CI: -0.50, -0.01, p = 0.040 and -0.40; 95%CI: -0.70, -0.10, p = 0.010) on reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively. Additionally, i) smartphone-app improved medication adherence by 45%; ii) more than two types of eHealth interventions and emails improved physical activity compliance by 18% and 57% respectively; ii) more than two types of eHealth interventions, phone calls, blood pressure telemonitoring, website and SMS improved blood pressure control between 16% and 30%; and iv) blood pressure telemonitoring showed a week effect on QoL
Our study reported eHealth to be a suitable intervention for the self-management of hypertension. Considering our results and the population's accessibility to eHealth devices, eHealth could be a useful and largely scalable tool for the self-management of hypertension.

High adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) has been associated with a reduced risk of depression in prospective cohort studies, but whether MD interventions are effective among adults with ...depression is uncertain.
This study aimed to synthesize findings on the effects of MD interventions on the severity of depressive symptoms in adults with depression.
PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched from database inception to March 2023. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the Cochrane recommendations were followed. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing outcomes after MD interventions with outcomes for control conditions in adults with depressive disorders or depressive symptoms.
Two authors extracted the data independently. The Sidik-Jonkman estimator, the I2 metric, and the prediction interval were used to estimate between-study heterogeneity. To determine the risk of bias and the certainty of evidence from RCTs, we used the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias 2 and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tools, respectively.
In total, 1507 participants (mean age range: 22.0 years-53.3 years) with depression were initially included in the 5 RCTs of this review. Compared with control conditions, MD interventions significantly reduced depressive symptoms among young and middle-aged adults with major depression or mild to moderate depressive symptoms (standardized mean difference: -0.53; 95% confidence interval: -0.90 to -0.16; I2 = 87.1%). The prediction interval ranged from -1.86 to 0.81. The overall risk of bias was within the range of "some concerns" to "high," while the certainty of evidence was low.
MD interventions appear to have substantial potential for alleviating depressive symptoms in people experiencing major or mild depression. However, to establish robust recommendations, there remains a need for high-quality, large-scale, and long-term RCTs.

OBJECTIVES:Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of different cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs), and its different combinations with other CMRFs, such as arterial stiffness have been hypothesized ...to explain, at least partially, increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Thus, in this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to synthesize the evidence regarding the association between the clustering of MetS-related CMRFs and arterial stiffness measured using pulse wave velocity (PWV).
METHODS:Original studies analysing the association between arterial stiffness, measured using PWV, and MetS were systematically searched. Pooled effect size estimates and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird method for two separate analysesthe diagnosis of MetS and PWV values and the number of CMRFs and PWV values.
RESULTS:Moderate effect size estimates were observed between MetS and PWV (0.68, 95% CI0.54–0.82) with a slightly higher effect size for the low-risk compared with the high-risk population group (0.75, 95% CI0.58–0.92; and 0.51, 95% CI0.32–0.82, respectively). A trend between the number of MetS-related CMRFs and PWV was found with the pooled effect size nearly doubling as the number of MetS-related CMRFs increased, 0.11 (95% CI0.04–0.17) for one MetS-related CMRF, 0.26 (95% CI0.13–0.4) for two, and 0.4 (95% CI0.2–0.6) for three or more.
CONCLUSION:These results demonstrated a clinically relevant association between MetS and PWV and an increasing trend in PWV values, such as a MetS-related CMRF increase. Although these results should be considered cautiously because of the considerable heterogeneity, our findings reinforce the rationale of MetS as an aggregation of risk factors with common causes, which could provide additional useful information to guide clinical management.
Dystrophin alterations in the brain have been associated with an increased risk of epilepsy in Becker and Duchenne muscular dystrophies (BMD and DMD). Moreover, an association between the mutation ...site and the risk of epilepsy is not ruled out. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the prevalence of epilepsy in BMD and DMD populations and to establish a possible association between the site of mutation in the dystrophin gene and the risk of epilepsy. Systematic searches of Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were conducted to identify relevant studies published from inception to January 2022. Observational studies of participants with BMD/DMD estimating the prevalence of epilepsy were included. The main outcome was the prevalence of epilepsy, and the secondary outcome was the prevalence ratio considering genotype. A random effects meta-analysis was performed for the prevalence of epilepsy. Eight studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The prevalence of epilepsy was 7% (95% CI 3–11%) in BMD, 5% (95% CI 2–8%) in DMD, and 5% (95% CI 3–7%) in the overall estimate. No association was observed between mutation site and the prevalence of epilepsy. BMD/DMD is strongly associated with the prevalence of epilepsy, with a higher prevalence in BMD/DMD populations than in the general population, probably owing to alterations in Dp427. The current evidence does not support the hypothesis that Dp140 or Dp71 affect epilepsy risk.
To examine the relationship between maternal education, cardiorespiratory fitness, and academic achievement in schoolchildren, specifically whether the association between maternal education and ...academic achievement is mediated by cardiorespiratory fitness.
This is a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study including 478 Spanish schoolchildren aged 8-11 years. ANOVA was used to test differences in cardiorespiratory fitness by maternal education level. ANCOVA was used to test the differences in academic achievement by the educational level of mothers and the cardiorespiratory fitness of children, controlling for each other. A mediation analysis was used to test if the relationship between maternal education and academic achievement was explained by cardiorespiratory fitness.
A higher level of maternal education was associated with a higher cardiorespiratory fitness level and academic achievement in children; moreover, the cardiorespiratory fitness level in children was associated with better academic achievement (P < .05). Finally, cardiorespiratory fitness acted as a partial mediator of the relationship between maternal education and academic achievement in boys (z = 1.81; P = .03) but not in girls (z = 0.86; P = .19), explaining 6.54% of this relationship for the total sample and 6.67% for boys.
This study suggests that the benefits of maternal education on academic achievement are partially explained by the mediating role of cardiorespiratory fitness.
Purpose
Understanding early vascular ageing has become crucial for preventing adverse cardiovascular events. To this respect, recent AI-based risk clustering models offer early detection strategies ...focused on healthy populations, yet their complexity limits clinical use. This work introduces a novel recommendation system embedded in a web app to assess and mitigate early vascular ageing risk, leading patients towards improved cardiovascular health.
Methods
This system employs a methodology that calculates distances within multidimensional spaces and integrates cost functions to obtain personalized optimisation of recommendations. It also incorporates a classification system for determining the intensity levels of the clinical interventions.
Results
The recommendation system showed high efficiency in identifying and visualizing individuals at high risk of early vascular ageing among healthy patients. Additionally, the system corroborated its consistency and reliability in generating personalized recommendations among different levels of granularity, emphasizing its focus on moderate or low-intensity recommendations, which could improve patient adherence to the intervention.
Conclusion
This tool might significantly aid healthcare professionals in their daily analysis, improving the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases.
Evidence exists regarding the association between advanced glycation end products and different cardiovascular disease subclinical processes, such as arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis. With this ...systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to provide a synthesis of the evidence regarding the association of arterial stiffness measured by pulse wave velocity and atherosclerosis measured by carotid intima media thickness with skin autofluorescence. A systematic search was performed using: MEDLINE (PubMed), SCOPUS, and Web of Science, until 30 March 2020. Cross-sectional studies or baseline data from prospective longitudinal studies were considered. The DerSimonian and Laird method was used to calculate the pooled estimates of correlation coefficients and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association of pulse wave velocity and carotid intima media thickness with skin autofluorescence. Twenty-five studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, including 6306 subjects. The pooled correlation coefficient was 0.25 (95% CI: 0.18, 0.31) for pulse wave velocity and skin autofluorescence, and 0.31 (95% CI: 0.25, 0.38) for carotid intima media thickness and skin autofluorescence. This systematic review and meta-analysis provide a synthesis of the evidence showing a positive weak association of pulse wave velocity and carotid intima media thickness with skin autofluorescence.
