Gerade im ...Fall formaler Organisationen sind soziale Praxen jedoch nur bedingt auf konjunktive Erfahrungsräume zurückzuführen. Vielmehr bekommen hier auch explizite Wissensbestände und Praxen zwischen unterschiedlichen Wissensräumen eine hohe Bedeutung. In diesem Beitrag wird im Anschluss an Gotthard GÜNTHER eine metatheoretische Konzeption für rekonstruktive Forschung in organisationalen Settings entwickelt. Soziale Praxis wird hier als das Prozessieren unterschiedlicher latenter und manifester Wissensbestände mit- und gegeneinander gefasst. Mit den Begriffen der Kontextur und der transjunktionalen Operation wird eine schlanke, aber gleichzeitig hoch abstrakte Metatheorie vorgeschlagen, die eine Analyse dieser Prozesse ermöglicht. The following is an intensive written discussion (by e-mail) between Arist v. Schlippe, Witten, Haim Omer, Tel Aviv and Noelle Behringer, Ludwigshafen. Omer and von Schlippe are regarded as the originators of the concept of "New Authority". Behringer's critical article New Authority - Power and Shame under the Guise of Presence, Perseverance and Resistance? A psychoanalytical-pedagogical invitation to reflection. from ESE V/2023 prompted them to respond in an explanatory and equally questioning manner, which led to a correspondence. This paper's point of departure is that business families are permanently confronted with a dual function: They engage in typical family relations yet also have formal decision‐making processes for ...business and family strategy. However, large business families—which may consist of several hundred shareholders who own one or more family businesses—are confronted with an additional challenge. Alongside being simultaneously a family and an organization, they also have to establish and maintain notions of membership and modes of communication between distantly related shareholders. This we have called family network or family 3.0. The challenges involved in initiating, shaping and maintaining such networks require new strategic reconsideration in the family itself and an extension of the existing theoretical observations regarding family businesses, thereby establishing the basis for a better understanding of large‐scale business families. For this, we try to combine family business research, organization studies and systems theory.
There is a long tradition of systemic approaches in family business research, but recent developments have been widely ignored. This article gives a brief overview of these approaches and models and ...then introduces the modern theory of social systems. This theory no longer considers individuals as parts of the system but assumes that the basic elements of a social system are acts of communication. In each system (family, business, ownership), a specific communication pattern evolves and each system operates within a specific functional logic. Families process relationship communication, businesses process decision communication, and ownership operates on the basis of legally secured communication. Each of these three structurally coupled systems provides a specific context. The functional logics are context markers and assign meaning to the communicative acts. To understand how a family business functions, it is important to understand the concrete functional logics and the structural coupling of the three systems.
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to present an innovative study with a twofold focus: on highly escalated family business (FB) conflicts and on the interactions between conflicts and the ...failure of the company as FB. The authors devoted this paper to the question of how family-related conflicts are connected with the demise of FB. Conflicts constitute an essential part of every FB and may definitely have the power to superimpose the performance of the FB as well as the family life in a destructive way. Especially, highly escalated so called relationship conflicts can be seen as one reason for the failure of FB.
Design/methodology/approach
– The research aims at analysing the meaning of conflict in FB with respect to the failure of the FB. Therefore, the authors use an explorative case study approach. The study is based on a total of five case studies. As the authors use theory of social systems as a theoretical background, the authors focused in the analysis in all cases on patterns rather than on individual characteristics.
Findings
– As an essential part of the study the authors formulated eight hypotheses describing specific patterns of the conflict process as a communicative system. These hypotheses convey a comprehensible impression of the effects conflicts may have within FB and present a number of new facets of conflict dynamics and patterns of escalation in FB.
Originality/value
– In particular, the authors provide new insights into the dynamics of highly destructive forms of conflicts in FB and the relationship between family-related conflicts and the failure of FB. The authors also pave the way for future research that aim to develop a more holistic understanding about when and why the outcomes from family and business systems will conflict or be harmonious.
Purpose - Family businesses (FBs) play an important role in economies across the world. FBs are consistently associated with specific attributes and expectations, which is something that points ...towards the notion that FBs can be regarded as a "brand" on their own. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether FBs have actually become a "brand" in the eyes of the wider population.Design methodology approach - The empirical investigation is based on the "Personal Construct Theory" (PCT), developed by George R. Kelly. According to this theory, human beings categorise and evaluate the world by building "personal constructs" that reflect their unconscious attitudes and value systems. To find out about the attitudes towards FBs, we used the "Nextexpertizer"® program, which exploits the PCT as a computer-based survey instrument. Finally, these results are connected with two different brand theories: the identity-oriented brand theory of Heribert Meffert and a sociological-based understanding of brands. The study was conducted in two stages: in 2007 2008 the authors interviewed a randomised sample of 80 people across Germany. In 2009 they interviewed 30 people with almost identical socio-demographic characteristics, to assure the comparability of the two surveys.Findings - The analysis of the aforementioned brand theories shows that FBs can be indeed described as a brand on their own. In order to speak of a strong brand, the identity-oriented approach requires the compliance between the intro-perspective and the external-perspective of brands. The perceptions of FBs exhibit a remarkable stability in both surveys. In sum, FBs are perceived as the most sustainable and social type of company. Nevertheless, FBs are also associated with certain negative attributes: for example, middle-size FBs are regarded as particularly inflexible.Originality value - The study shows that FBs address the identity myths of stability and safety like no other company type. Yet the identity myths also evoke other societal needs, such as egoistic self-fulfillment motives, or the will to live free and without boundaries. For these needs, FBs are perceived as inflexible and stiff.

Der Beitrag setzt sich mit der Kritik an „fragwürdigen Ansätzen im Coaching“ von Uwe Kanning auseinander. Die dem Beitrag zugrundliegende Prämisse, nach der Praxiswissen ausschließlich durch ...Verwissenschaftlichung zu sichern und zu optimieren sei, wird kritisch hinterfragt. Ihr wird die Differenz von „Wissenschaft“ und „Profession“ entgegengesetzt, die beide zwar füreinander wesentliche Anstöße geben, aber nicht aufeinander reduzierbar sind.
Forschungsprojekt Big Family Management Die empirische Grundlage der These, große familiäre Gesellschafterkreise als Familiennetzwerke zu betrachten, entstammt einem aktuellen Forschungsprojekt des ...Wittener Instituts für Familienunternehmen der Universität Witten/Herdecke (WIFU) zum Big Family Management. Das Projekt folgte der Logik der Aktionsforschung,8 d. h., eine Gruppe aus Unternehmensvertretern und Forschern traf sich zweimal jährlich zu gemeinsamen Workshops, in denen die familienspezifische Praktizierung der Themen vorgestellt wurde. Andererseits verlassen sich offenbar zunehmend mehr Gesellschafter darauf, ihre Existenz von der Dividende zu bestreiten, sodass eine Familie z. B. versucht, eine Dividendenkontinuität herzustellen, um eine finanzielle Planbarkeit der Gesellschafter zu ermöglichen: »In guten Jahren schütten wir etwas weniger aus als möglich und in schlechten Jahren etwas mehr als eigentlich gut wäre. Jüngere Familienmitglieder hingegen, die in Wohlstand aufgewachsen sind, empfinden eine künstlich vorgegebene Lebensführung und bescheidene Enthaltsamkeit im Lebensstil als unangemessen, realitätsfern sowie als aufgezwun- gene Haltung der Seniorgeneration, die das Gefühl eines »Vermögensknasts« der Familie hervorrufe. 3.

The influence of the family on business has been the subject of much debate, particularly with regard to the assumed familiness of family businesses. The term ‘familiness’ is at risk of becoming an ...umbrella concept and is often used haphazardly, lacking a solid theoretical background. This review provides a structured overview of the literature addressing the idea of familiness. Over the last 13 years, research on this key concept has grown continually, resulting in a broadening rather than a deepening of the concept of familiness. The results of the analysis of 33 manuscripts are presented and consolidated into three main categories: (1) theoretical perspectives; (2) the development and impact of familiness; and (3) empirical approaches. The analysis shows that existing research on familiness lacks the application of a universal theoretical lens. The authors counteract this shortfall by introducing new systems theory and presenting promising directions for further research, especially with regard to the development of a familiness typology.
