New U–Pb radioisotopic ages on early Cambrian volcanic zircons condition a high-resolution Bayesian age model that constrains the first occurrences and zonations of West Gondwanan archaeocyaths and ...trilobites in southern Morocco. The oldest archaeocyaths in the Tiout Member of the Igoudine Formation (519.71 + 0.26/− 0.35 Ma) are c. 6 Ma younger than the oldest Siberian archaeocyaths. The oldest Moroccan trilobite fragments, from the lower member of the Igoudine, are constrained to 519.95 + 0.43/− 0.40 Ma. The succeeding Issendalenian Stage (i.e. Hupetina antique – Eofallotaspis tioutensis – Fallotaspis plana – Choubertella – Daguinaspis trilobite zones) spans c. 1.5 Ma (519.78 + 0.26/− 0.37 Ma to 518.43 + 0.25/− 0.69 Ma). Identifiable Moroccan fallotaspidids and bigotinids, among Earth’s oldest trilobites, occur above a positive δ13C excursion dated with our age model at 520.27 + 0.59/− 0.57 Ma, and correlated with the IV excursion peak within the lower range of Siberian Atdabanian Stage trilobites (Repinaella Zone). This excursion is the best standard for a Cambrian Series 2 base. The oldest West Gondwana trilobite fragments are c. 1 Ma younger than those in Siberia and c. 0.5 Ma older than the oldest Avalonian trilobites (Callavia Zone). This diachrony means a trilobite first appearance datum is an inappropriate chronostratigraphic base for Cambrian Series 2. Taxonomic differences in the oldest trilobites between Cambrian palaeocontinents are in accordance with trace fossil evidence for the group’s appearance possibly as late as c. 530 Ma in the Cambrian Evolutionary Radiation. Coeval 519–517 Ma dates from Avalonia (cool-water siliciclastic shelf) and West Gondwana (tropical carbonate platform) sections with distinct macrofaunas emphasize these successions were latitudinally separate by the late Ediacaran Period.
Apes and Old World monkeys are prominent components of modern African and Asian ecosystems, yet the earliest phases of their evolutionary history have remained largely undocumented. The absence of ...crown catarrhine fossils older than ∼20 million years (Myr) has stood in stark contrast to molecular divergence estimates of ∼25-30 Myr for the split between Cercopithecoidea (Old World monkeys) and Hominoidea (apes), implying long ghost lineages for both clades. Here we describe the oldest known fossil 'ape', represented by a partial mandible preserving dental features that place it with 'nyanzapithecine' stem hominoids. Additionally, we report the oldest stem member of the Old World monkey clade, represented by a lower third molar. Both specimens were recovered from a precisely dated 25.2-Myr-old stratum in the Rukwa Rift, a segment of the western branch of the East African Rift in Tanzania. These finds extend the fossil record of apes and Old World monkeys well into the Oligocene epoch of Africa, suggesting a possible link between diversification of crown catarrhines and changes in the African landscape brought about by previously unrecognized tectonic activity in the East African rift system.

A large data set of single and multi-grain zircon and titanite analyses from a sample of the Oligocene Fish Canyon Tuff (FCT), a voluminous ash flow from the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and widely ...used Ar-40/Ar-39 geochronological standard, has been used to evaluate the influence of various sources of analytical and geological uncertainty on the calculated age of this tuft by the isotope dilution U-Pb zircon method. Twenty-three single zircon grains and seven small multi-grain fractions of the FCT yield an inverse-variance weighted mean Pb-206/U-238 date of 28.402 +/- 0.023 Ma (2-sigma, MSWD 0.93) and a slightly older weighted mean Pb-207/U-235 date of 28.529 +/- 0.030 Ma (MSWD 0.74), which are insensitive to common Pb corrections. Initial Th-230 disequilibria calculated from a newly measured Th/U = 2.2 for FCT pumice shards indicate Th-deficiency for these zircons; its correction brings the weighted mean Pb-206/U-238 date to 28.478 +/- 0.024 (MSWD 0.97), minimizing the discordance of the FCT zircon analyses. Temporary transvenous cardiac pacing (TVP) is a critical intervention that emergency physicians perform infrequently in clinical practice. Prior simulation studies revealed that emergency medicine ...(EM) residents and board-certified emergency physicians perform TVP poorly during checklist-based assessments. Our objective in this report was to describe the design and implementation of a simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) curriculum and evaluate its impact on EM residents' ability to perform TVP.
An expert panel of emergency physicians and cardiologists set a minimum passing standard (MPS) for a previously developed 30-item TVP checklist using the Mastery Angoff approach. Emergency medicine residents were assessed using this checklist and a high-fidelity TVP task trainer. Residents who did not meet the MPS during baseline testing viewed a procedure video and completed a 30-minute individual deliberate practice session before retesting. Residents who did not meet the MPS during initial post-testing completed additional deliberate practice and assessment until meeting or exceeding the MPS.
The expert panel set an MPS of correctly performing 28 (93.3%) checklist items. Fifty-seven EM residents participated. Mean checklist scores improved from 13.4 (95% CI 11.8-15.0) during baseline testing to 27.5 (95% CI 26.9-28.1) during initial post-testing (P < 0.01). No residents met the MPS at baseline testing. The 21 (36.8%) residents who did not meet the MPS during initial post-testing all met or exceeded the MPS after completing one additional 30-minute deliberate practice session.
Emergency medicine residents demonstrated significantly improved TVP performance with reduced variability in checklist scores after completing a simulation-based mastery learning curriculum.
Abstract
We present new geochemical, Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope, and 40Ar/39Ar data from Pleistocene basalts of the Western Snake River Plain (WSRP), Idaho, USA to explore their petrogenesis and to ...investigate the nature of the lithosphere at the western boundary of the North American craton. The basalts are divided into three groups based on their geochemical and isotopic characteristics. Prior to ∼1 Ma, volcanoes in the WSRP erupted iron-rich tholeiites (FeB1), but subsequent volcanism was dominated by concurrent eruptions of mildly alkaline, alumina-rich lavas (AlB) and iron-rich tholeiites (FeB2) with isotopic signatures similar to the AlB lavas. New 40Ar/39Ar dates of AlB and FeB2 basalts range from 0·920 ± 0·049 to 0·287 ± 0·014 Ma. MELTS models of FeB1 differentiation trends indicate that the range of compositions in this suite can be produced by 10–15 % crystallization of olivine and plagioclase at low pressure using the least evolved FeB1 composition as a parental magma; isotopic ratios can be produced via combined assimilation of a Miocene rhyolite and fractional crystallization. Additional modeling suggests that parental magmas at AlB centers were produced by 3–12 % equilibrium melting of a garnet–spinel-enriched mantle source, slightly different from that proposed for the youngest mildly alkaline lavas of the eastern and central Snake River Plain. Our new geochemical, isotopic, and geochronological data for the FeB2 basalts suggests that they are related to AlB-type magmas via a combination of fractional crystallization and assimilation of evolved mafic crust. MELTS models suggest that crystallization of an AlB parental melt at a depth of 6–8 km (2·5 kbar) could produce residual liquids having many of the major oxide characteristics of FeB2 ferrobasalts. Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic signatures of these three suites indicate a dominant contribution from an enriched plume source. FeB1 lavas are probably products of mixing between melts of an enriched plume mantle source (represented by Imnaha and Steens Basalts of the Columbia River Basalt Group) and isotopically heterogeneous sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) that has been isolated from the convecting mantle since the Archean. Isotopic ratios of FeB2 and AlB lavas capture mixing between enriched plume mantle and a more isotopically homogeneous ancient SCLM domain characteristic of the eastern and central Snake River Plain, with a coupled decrease in lithospheric contribution and degree of partial melting through time to the present. Mixtures of enriched asthenospheric reservoirs with lithospheric mantle have been proposed for neighboring volcanic fields to the east along the strike of the Yellowstone–SRP hotspot track, and to the west owing to differences in the mantle underlying the boundary of the North American craton and accreted terranes. Our petrogenetic model for the Pleistocene WSRP basalts suggests that there is also a lateral, across-strike gradient in the geometry and interaction of enriched plume mantle and ancient lithosphere. We reiterate suggestions that the WSRP is a lithosphere-scale conduit connecting initial plume-head impingement in east–central Oregon with the subsequent Yellowstone–SRP hotspot plume-tail track.
To determine if patient aspirin exposure and timing affect bleeding risk after renal allograft biopsy.
Review of 6,700 renal allograft biopsies (in 2,362 unique patients) was performed. Median ...patient age was 53.0 years interquartile range 43.0, 62.0; 56.2% of patients were male. Of biopsies, 4,706 (70.2%) were performed in patients with no aspirin exposure within 10 days of biopsy; 664 (9.9%), were performed within 8-10 days of aspirin exposure; 855 (12.8%), within 4-7 days; and 475 (7.1%), within 0-3 days. Follow-up to 3 months after the procedure was completed in all patients. Biopsies were categorized as protocol or indication; 19.7% were indication biopsies. Bleeding complications were graded based on SIR criteria. Logistic regression models examined the association between aspirin use and bleeding events.
Rate 95% confidence interval of major bleeding complications was 0.24% 0.14, 0.39, and rate of any bleeding complication was 0.66% 0.46, 0.90. Bleeding events were significantly associated with patients undergoing indication biopsies compared with protocol biopsies (odds ratio OR 2.27, P = .012). Patient factors associated with major bleeding complications in multivariate models included estimated glomerular filtration rate (OR 0.61, P = .016) and platelet count (OR 0.64, P = .033). Aspirin use was not significantly associated with increased risk of bleeding complication except for use of 325 mg of aspirin within 3 days of biopsy (any complication OR 3.87 1.12, 13.4, P = .032; major complication OR 6.30 1.27, 31.3, P = .024).
Renal allograft biopsy bleeding complications are very rare, particularly for protocol biopsies. Use of 325 mg of aspirin within 3 days of renal allograft biopsy was associated with increased bleeding complications.
Integrative models of crust and mantle structure, age, and growth of the oldest continental nuclei;the Archean cratons;are critical to understanding the processes that stabilize continental ...lithosphere. For the Kaapvaal craton of southern Africa, conflicting ages of stabilization have been derived from studies of its crust and underlying mantle. New U-Pb zircon geochronological data from the western Kaapvaal craton reveal that two older (3.7 to 3.1 billion year old) continental masses, the Kimberley and Witwatersrand blocks, were juxtaposed by a significantly younger, previously unresolved episode of subduction and terrane collision between 2.93 and 2.88 billion years ago. Geological evidence indicates that convergence was accommodated by subduction beneath the Kimberley block, culminating in collisional suturing in the vicinity of the present-day Colesberg magnetic lineament. The timing of these convergent margin processes is further shown to correlate with the strong peak in Re-Os age distributions of Kimberley block mantle peridotites, eclogites, and eclogite- hosted diamonds. These data thus support the petrogenetic coupling of continental crust and lithospheric mantle through a model of continental arc magmatism, subduction zone mantle wedge processing and terminal collisional advective thickening to form Archean continental tectosphere.
