The purpose of this prospective randomized controlled trial was to compare the clinical outcome and the survival rate of total knee arthroplasty between CT- and MRI-based patient-specific ...instrumentation 5 years after initial surgery.
At a mean follow-up of 5.8 years (SD 0.3), 98 patients (64% women, loss to follow-up 28%) were included in this analysis. To assess the differences in clinical outcome, patients fulfilled PROMs preoperatively and at each follow-up moment. At final follow-up, the Forgotten Joint Score was adjusted.
At final follow-up, no new patients underwent revision surgery in both groups. Regarding the clinical outcome, no statistically significant difference between the groups was found. The Forgotten Joint Score was only performed at final follow-up and showed no significant difference between both groups.
At mid-term follow-up, survival rates between CT- and MRI-based patient-specific instrumentation did not show a significant difference. Regarding clinical outcome, only the EQ-5D-VAS (p < 0.040) showed a statistically significant difference over time, in favor of the MRI-group.

Physiotherapy is a proven effective treatment strategy after total knee and hip arthroplasty (TKA/THA), however there is considerable practice variation regarding its timing, content and duration. ...This study aims to compare the (cost-) effectiveness of a standardized, treat-to-target postoperative physiotherapy strategy with usual postoperative care.
Using a cluster randomized study design, consecutive patients scheduled for a primary TKA/THA in 18 hospitals in the Netherlands will be assigned to the treat-to-target physio therapy strategy or usual postoperative care. With the treat-to-target strategy a standardized, individually tailored, exercise program is aimed at the attainment of specific functional milestones. Assessments are done at baseline, 6 weeks and 3, 6, 9 and 12 months follow up. The primary outcome will be the Knee injury / Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score - Physical Function Short Form (KOOS-PS / HOOS-PS) at 3 months follow up. Secondary outcomes are the numeric rating scale for pain, the Oxford Knee and Hip Scores, performance-based test and the EuroQol 5D-5L for quality of life. Healthcare use, productivity and satisfaction with postoperative care are measured by means of questionnaires. In total, 624 patients will be needed of which 312 TKA and 312 THA patients.
The study will provide evidence concerning the (cost-) effectiveness of the treat-to-target postoperative physiotherapy treatment compared to usual postoperative care. The results of this study will address an important evidence gap and will have a significant impact in daily practice of the physio therapist.

We report the first detection of the second-forbidden, nonunique, 2+→0+, ground-state transition in the β decay of F20. A low-energy, mass-separated F+20 beam produced at the IGISOL facility in ...Jyväskylä, Finland, was implanted in a thin carbon foil and the β spectrum measured using a magnetic transporter and a plastic-scintillator detector. The β-decay branching ratio inferred from the measurement is bβ=0.41±0.08(stat)±0.07(sys)×10-5 corresponding to logft=10.89(11), making this one of the strongest second-forbidden, nonunique β transitions ever measured. The experimental result is supported by shell-model calculations and has significant implications for the final evolution of stars that develop degenerate oxygen-neon cores. Using the new experimental data, we argue that the astrophysical electron-capture rate on Ne20 is now known to within better than 25% at the relevant temperatures and densities.
Background
Achieving an optimal limb alignment is an important factor affecting the long-term survival of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This is the first study to look at the limb alignment and ...orientation of components in TKA using a novel image-free handheld robotic sculpting system.
Methods
This case-controlled study retrospectively compared limb and component alignment of 77 TKAs performed with a robot (Robot-group) with a matched control group of patients who received conventional alignment with intramedular rods (Control group). Alignment and component positioning was measured on full-leg weight-bearing and standard lateral X-rays by two independent observers. The image-free handheld robotic sculpting system calculated the planned and achieved mechanical axis (MA). Outliers were defined as > 3° deviation from planned alignment.
Results
Mean MA was 180.1° (SD = 1.9) in the Robot-group, compared to the Control group with a mean MA of 179.1° (SD = 3.1,
p
= 0.028). We observed 5 outliers (6%) in the Robot-group and 14 outliers (18%,
p
= 0.051) in the Control group. Fraction of outliers of the frontal tibial component was 0% in the Robot-group versus 8% in the Control group (
p
= 0.038). There were no other statistical differences regarding the implant positioning between both groups.
Conclusion
The Robot-group showed significantly less outliers compared to the conventional technique. Whether these differences are clinically relevant is questionable and should be investigated on the long term. Randomized controlled trials with larger patient series will be needed in the future to confirm our preliminary results.

Single top production in e+e− annihilations is searched for in data collected by the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies from 189 to 209 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of ...634 pb−1. Investigating hadronic and semileptonic top decays, no evidence of single top production at LEP is obtained and upper limits on the single top cross section as a function of the centre-of-mass energy are derived. Limits on possible anomalous couplings, as well as on the scale of contact interactions responsible for single top production are determined.
We search, in the context of extra-dimension scenarios, for the possible existence of brane fluctuations, called branons. Events with a single photon or a single Z-boson and missing energy and ...momentum collected with the L3 detector in e+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies 2=189–209 GeV are analysed. No excess over the Standard Model expectations is found and a lower limit at 95% confidence level of 103 GeV is derived for the mass of branons, for a scenario with small brane tensions. Alternatively, under the assumption of a light branon, brane tensions below 180 GeV are excluded.
The CP-conserving triple-gauge-boson couplings, g1Z, κγ, λγ, g5Z, κZ and λZ are measured using hadronic and semi-leptonic W-pair events selected in 629 pb−1 of data collected at LEP with the L3 ...detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. The results are combined with previous L3 measurements based on data collected at lower centre-of-mass energies and with the results from single-W production and from events with a single-photon and missing energy. Imposing the constraints κZ=g1Z−tan2θW(κγ−1) and λZ=λγ, we obtain for the C and P conserving couplings the results: g1Z=0.966±0.033(stat)±0.015(syst),κγ=1.013±0.066(stat)±0.026(syst),λγ=−0.021±0.035(stat)±0.017(syst). Results from the analysis of fully leptonic W-pair decays are also given. All results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations and confirm the existence of self-couplings among electroweak gauge bosons.

The ηπ+π− final state in two-photon collisions is studied with the L3 detector at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 664.6 pb−1. The f1(1285) meson ...is observed and the Q2 dependence of its production is compared to different form factor models. The γγ-coupling parameter Γγγ is found to be 3.5±0.6(stat.)±0.5(sys.) keV. The branching fraction Γ(f1(1285)→a0π)/Γ(f1(1285)→ηππ) is also measured.
