Career counselling in German-speaking countries lacks assessment instruments that are based on a systemic approach. As nobody lives in a vacuum, all individuals are affected by their surrounding ...systems, such as parents, friends and politics. The My System of Career Influences, (MSCI) is an assessment instrument that is based on the systems theory framework and focuses on both intra-individual and contextual influences. The authors adapted and tested a German version of the MSCI with Baccalaureate school students at upper secondary level II in Switzerland. The results show that the MSCI can be considered a useful instrument in career counselling in general. Still, some improvements are needed regarding clarity of the aim of the MSCI and the embedding of the instrument within other career counselling activities. Further, for students it would be helpful if they had the possibility to discuss their MSCI results with another person. Author abstract
The purpose of this study was to adapt the Decent Work Scale (DWS; Duffy et al., 2017) and extend the research on the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT; Duffy, Blustein, Diemer, & Autin, 2016) within ...the Swiss context. The results indicated that the Swiss French, German, and Italian versions of the DWS are valid measurements. We then tested PWT predictors and outcomes of decent work. Work volition fully mediated the negative link between unemployment, quantitative job insecurity and low education, and decent work. Perceived social class and qualitative job security predicted decent work with partial mediations through work volition. Work volition and decent work predicted job and life satisfaction. With the exception of age and social class, work volition or decent work fully mediated the relation between predictors and outcomes. Qualitative analyses on an open-ended question showed that the perceived components of decent work covered both the PWT dimensions of decent work and the needs that work is expected to satisfy. These findings highlight the pertinence of using the DWS and applying the PWT in Western and prosperous countries, such as Switzerland.
•The Swiss adaptation of the Decent Work Scale shows good psychometric properties.•DWS scores can be compared across gender and languages (French, German, Italian).•Age, social class, and qualitative job security predict decent work.•Work volition and decent work predict job and life satisfaction.•Perceived components of decent work confirm the pertinence of the PWT.
"Die Arbeitswelt verändert sich, und damit auch die Arbeit der Berufs-, Studien- und Laufbahnberatung. In einer explorativen Befragung wurde das Qualifikationsprofil für Beratende zwar bestätigt. Sie ...gab aber auch Hinweise für die Überarbeitung des MAS-Curriculums des IAP." (Autorenreferat; BIBB-Doku).
•‘Experience Sampling Method’ (ESM) requires short and validated non-verbal scales.•The non-verbal ‘Lebender Emoticon PANAVA’ scale (LE-PANAVA) is presented.•LE-PANAVA captures positive and negative ...activation (PA/NA), and valence (VA).•LE-PANAVA is available for future ESM research and practical application.
Positive and negative activation (PA/NA) represent two general activation systems of affect that are of importance for studying personality. Hereby, many studies focus on state assessment of PA and NA in everyday situations, using the ‘Experience Sampling Method’ (ESM) performed via mobile devices. ESM studies require short, reliable and validated non-verbal scales for immediate and fast capturing of personality and situation characteristics. In this study we present the non-verbal ‘Lebender Emoticon PANAVA’ scale (LE-PANAVA), consisting of five items capturing PA, NA, and valence (VA). LE-PANAVA is based on the 10-item verbal PANAVA-KS scale developed by Schallberger (2005). The development of LE-PANAVA consisted of a three step process: The graphical development and selection of a set of emoticons (study 1), the validation of the set of emoticons and corresponding adjustments to the scale (study 2), and validation of the final scale (study 3). We conclude from the results that LE-PANAVA captures the two factors PA and NA, but are aware that they are closely interrelated. Additional to LE-PANAVA, an ultra-short version was derived, that is, a forced choice 2 × 2 matrix of emoticons – the ‘Lebender Emoticon PANA Matrix’ (LE-PANA-M). Both LE-PANAVA and LE-PANA-M are available for future research and practical application.

An innovative design of a counter-current two-phase thermosyphon is investigated for the in-plane cooling of flat product structures. The thermosyphon features multiple pools staggered along the entire evaporator section, in which liquid flowing toward the bottom of the thermosyphon can be stored. The pools are used to cascade the working fluid to the evaporator end cap. Liquid accumulates in the pools until they overflow, thereby spreading the working fluid across the entire evaporator length rather than creating one liquid pool at the bottom end cap. Multiple of such thermosyphons operating in parallel can be used for low-gradient planar cooling of vertically oriented surfaces. A numerical model using a control volume approach is developed to predict and to validate the experimental results of this innovative design. The main advantages of the control volume approach are the adaptability of the entire model and the fast computational speed in comparison to elaborate fluid dynamics models. Empirical correlations are used for the modeling of the heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of the counter-current flow. A proof of principle is given by observing a prototype that was milled into a copper bar. Next to logging temperature measurements, the prototype had a glass top plate to visually record the working fluid behavior. The model presented is well suitable for the early stages of thermosyphon design studies and for the impact evaluation of design changes.
We introduce the Vocational ID that integrates linguistic and visual representations of a career counselling client's self. Based upon findings from the Life Design paradigm Savickas, M.
