Aims. We aim to confirm whether the eclipsing cataclysmic variable (CV) V902 Mon is an intermediate polar (IP), to characterise its X-ray spectrum and flux, and to refine its orbital ephemeris and ...spin period. Methods. We performed spectrographic observations of V902 Mon in 2016 with the 2.2 m Calar Alto telescope, and X-ray photometry and spectroscopy with XMM-Newton in October 2017. This data was supplemented by several years of AAVSO visual photometry. Results. We confirmed V902 Mon as an IP based on detecting the spin period, which has a value of 2208 s, at multiple epochs. Spectroscopy of the donor star and Gaia parallax yield a distance of 3.5−0.9+1.3 kpc3.5−0.9+1.3 kpc$$3.5_{ - 0.9}^{ + 1.3}\;{\rm{kpc}}$$, suggesting an X-ray luminosity one or two orders of magnitude lower than the 1033 erg s−1 typical of previously known IPs. The X-ray to optical flux ratio is also very low. The inclination of the system is more than 79°, and is most likely a value of around 82°. We have refined the eclipse ephemeris, stable over 14 000 cycles. The Hα line is present throughout the orbital cycle and is clearly present during eclipse, suggesting an origin distant from the white dwarf, and shows radial velocity variations at the orbital period. The amplitude and overall recessional velocity seem inconsistent with an origin in the disc. The XMM-Newton observation reveals a partially absorbed plasma model typical of magnetic CVs, that has a fluorescent iron line at 6.4 keV showing a large equivalent width of 1.4 keV. Conclusions. V902 Mon is an IP, and probably a member of the hypothesized X-ray underluminous class of IPs. It is likely to be a disc accretor, although the radial velocity behaviour of the Hα line remains puzzling. The large equivalent width of the fluorescent iron line, the small FX/Fopt ratio, and the only marginal detection of X-ray eclipses suggests that the X-ray emission arises from scattering.
We present a sample of 383 X-ray selected galaxy groups and clusters with spectroscopic redshift measurements (up to z ~ 0.79) from the 2XMMi/SDSS Galaxy Cluster Survey. The X-ray cluster candidates ...were selected as serendipitously detected sources from the 2XMMi-DR3 catalogue that were located in the footprint of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7). The cluster galaxies with available spectroscopic redshifts were selected from the SDSS-DR10. We developed an algorithm for identifying the cluster candidates that are associated with spectroscopically targeted luminous red galaxies and for constraining the cluster spectroscopic redshift. A cross-correlation of the constructed cluster sample with published optically selected cluster catalogues yielded 264 systems with available redshifts. The present redshift measurements are consistent with the published values. The current cluster sample extends the optically confirmed cluster sample from our cluster survey by 67 objects. Moreover, it provides spectroscopic confirmation for 78 clusters among our published cluster sample, which previously had only photometric redshifts. Of the new cluster sample that comprises 67 systems, 55 objects are newly X-ray discovered clusters and 52 systems are sources newly discovered as galaxy clusters in optical and X-ray wavelengths. Based on the measured redshifts and the fluxes given in the 2XMMi-DR3 catalogue, we estimated the X-ray luminosities and masses of the cluster sample
ABSTRACT
SDSS-V is carrying out a dedicated survey for white dwarfs, single, and in binaries, and we report the analysis of the spectroscopy of 118 cataclysmic variables (CVs) and CV candidates ...obtained during the final plug plate observations of SDSS. We identify eight new CVs, spectroscopically confirm 53 and refute 11 published CV candidates, and we report 21 new or improved orbital periods. The orbital period distribution of the SDSS-V CVs does not clearly exhibit a period gap. In common with previous studies, the distribution shows that spectroscopically identified CVs have a larger proportion of short-period systems compared to samples identified from photometric variability. Remarkably, despite a systematic search, we find very few period bouncers. We estimate the space density of period bouncers to be $\simeq 0.2\times 10^{-6}\, \mathrm{pc}^{-3}$, i.e. they represent only a few per cent of the total CV population. This suggests that during their final phase of evolution, CVs either destroy the donor, e.g. via a merger, or that they become detached and cease mass transfer.
Context. X-ray surveys are a key instrument in the study of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Thanks to their penetrating ability, X-rays are able to map the innermost regions close to the central super ...massive black hole (SMBH) as well as to detect and characterize its emission up to high redshift. Aims. We present here a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of the AGN belonging to the XMM-Newton bright survey (XBS). The XBS is composed of two flux-limited samples selected in the complementary 0.5−4.5 and 4.5−7.5 keV energy bands and comprising more than 300 AGN up to redshift ~2.4. Methods. We performed an X-ray analysis following two different approaches: by analyzing individually each AGN X-ray spectrum and by constructing average spectra for different AGN types. Results. From the individual analysis, we find that there seems to be an anti correlation between the spectral index and the sources’ hard X-ray luminosity, such that the average photon index for the higher luminosity sources (>1044 erg s-1) is significantly (>2σ) flatter than the average for the lower luminosity sources. We also find that the intrinsic column density distribution agrees with AGN unified schemes, although a number of exceptions are found (3% of the whole sample), which are much more common among optically classified type 2 AGN. We also find that the so-called “soft-excess”, apart from the intrinsic absorption, constitutes the principal deviation from a power-law shape in AGN X-ray spectra and it clearly displays different characteristics, and likely a different origin, for unabsorbed and absorbed AGN. Regarding the shape of the average spectra, we find that it is best reproduced by a combination of an unabsorbed (absorbed) power law, a narrow Fe Kα emission line and a small (large) amount of reflection for unabsorbed (absorbed) sources. We do not significantly detect any relativistic contribution to the line emission and we compute an upper limit for its equivalent width (EW) of 230 eV at the 3σ confidence level. Finally, by dividing the type 1 AGN sample into high- and low-luminosity sources, we marginally detect a decrease in the narrow Fe Kα line EW and in the amount of reflection as the luminosity increases, the “so-called” Iwasawa-Taniguchi effect.
Previous XMM-Newton observations of the thermally emitting isolated neutron star RX J1605.3+3249 provided a candidate for a shallow periodic signal and evidence of a fast spin down, which suggested a ...high dipolar magnetic field and an evolution from a magnetar. We obtained a large programme with XMM-Newton to confirm its candidate timing solution, understand the energy-dependent amplitude of the modulation, and investigate the spectral features of the source. We performed extensive high-resolution and broadband periodicity searches in the new observations, using the combined photons of the three EPIC cameras and allowing for moderate changes of pulsed fraction and the optimal energy range for detection. We also investigated the EPIC and RGS spectra of the source with unprecedented statistics and detail. A deep 4σ upper limit of 1.33(6)% for modulations in the relevant frequency range conservatively rules out the candidate period previously reported. Blind searches revealed no other periodic signal above the 1.5% level (3σ; P > 0.15 s; 0.3–1.35 keV) in any of the four new observations. While theoretical models fall short at physically describing the complex energy distribution of the source, best-fit X-ray spectral parameters are obtained for a fully or partially ionized neutron star hydrogen atmosphere model with B = 1013 G, modified by a broad Gaussian absorption line at energy ϵ = 385 ± 10 eV. A double-temperature blackbody model, although a good fit to the source spectrum, is disfavoured as it would require a particularly improbable viewing geometry to explain the lack of X-ray pulsations associated with small hotspots on the surface of the neutron star. We identified a low significance (1σ) temporal trend on the parameters of the source in the analysis of RGS data dating back to 2002, which may be explained by unaccounted calibration issues and spectral model uncertainties. The new dataset also shows no evidence of the previously reported narrow absorption feature at ϵ ∼ 570 eV, whose possible transient nature disfavours an atmospheric origin.

We present a study of the cataclysmic variable star PT Per based on archival XMM–Newton X-ray data and new optical spectroscopy from the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) with Intermediate dispersion ...Spectrograph and Imaging System (ISIS). The X-ray data show deep minima which recur at a period of 82 min and a hard, unabsorbed X-ray spectrum. The optical spectra of PT Per show a relatively featureless blue continuum. From an analysis of the X-ray and optical data we conclude that PT Per is likely to be a magnetic cataclysmic variable of the polar class in which the minima correspond to those phase intervals when the accretion column rotates out of the field of view of the observer. We suggest that the optical spectrum, obtained around 4 yr after the X-ray coverage, is dominated by the white dwarf in the system, implying that PT Per was in a low accretion state at the time of the observations. An analysis of the likely system parameters for PT Per suggests a distance of ≈90 pc and a very low mass secondary, consistent with the idea that PT Per is a ‘period-bounce’ binary. Matching the observed absorption features in the optical spectrum with the expected Zeeman components constrains the white dwarf polar field to be B
p
≈ 25–27 MG.
We obtained the Calar Alto identification spectra for six cataclysmic variable candidates and studied archival observations over a range of wavelengths. Two sources were too faint to allow easy ...identification by their spectra, and the other four are likely to be dwarf novae. No periodicity was detected for any of the sources on the basis of Catalina Real‐Time Transient Survey (CRTS) data.
Context. Transiting highly inflated giant planets offer the possibility of characterizing their atmospheres. A fraction of the starlight passes through the high-altitude layers of the planetary ...atmosphere during transit. The resulting absorption is expected to be wavelength dependent for cloud-free atmospheres with an amplitude of up to 10-3 of the stellar flux, while a high-altitude cloud deck would cause a gray opacity. Aims. We observed the Saturn-mass and Jupiter-sized exoplanet HAT-P-19b to refine its transit parameters and ephemeris as well as to shed first light on its transmission spectrum. We monitored the host star over one year to quantify its flux variability and to correct the transmission spectrum for a slope caused by starspots. Methods. A transit of HAT-P-19b was observed spectroscopically with OSIRIS at the Gran Telescopio Canarias in January 2012. The spectra of the target and the comparison star covered the wavelength range from 5600 to 7600 Å. One high-precision differential light curve was created by integrating the entire spectral flux. This white-light curve was used to derive absolute transit parameters. Furthermore, a set of light curves over wavelength was formed by a flux integration in 41 wavelength channels of 50 Å width. We analyzed these spectral light curves for chromatic variations of transit depth. Results. The transit fit of the combined white-light curve yields a refined value of the planet-to-star radius ratio of 0.1390 ± 0.0012 and an inclination of 88.89 ± 0.32 deg. After a re-analysis of published data, we refine the orbital period to 4.0087844 ± 0.0000015 days. We obtain a flat transmission spectrum without significant additional absorption at any wavelength or any slope. However, our accuracy is not sufficient to significantly rule out the presence of a pressure-broadened sodium feature. Our photometric monitoring campaign allowed for an estimate of the stellar rotation period of 35.5 ± 2.5 days and an improved age estimate of 5.5+ 1.8-1.3 Gyr by gyrochronology. The calculated correction of the transit depth for unocculted spots on the visible hemisphere was found to be well within the derived 1σ uncertainty of the white-light curve and the spectral data points of the transmission spectrum.
Context. X-ray surveys combined with optical follow-up observations are used to generate complete flux-limited samples of the main X-ray emitting source classes. eROSITA on the ...Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission provides sufficient sensitivity to build significantly enhanced samples of rare X-ray emitting sources. Aims. We strive to identify and classify compact white dwarf binaries, cataclysmic variables (CVs), and related objects, which were detected in the sky area of eFEDS, the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depths Survey, and they were observed in the plate program of SDSS-V. Methods. Compact white dwarf binaries were selected from spectra obtained in the early SDSS-V plate program. A dedicated set of SDSS plate observations were carried out in the eFEDS field, providing spectroscopic classifications for a significant fraction of the optically bright end ( r < 22.5) of the X-ray sample. The identification and subclassification rests on visual inspections of the SDSS spectra, spectral variability, color-magnitude and color-color diagrams involving optical and X-ray fluxes, optical variability, and literature work. Results. Upon visual inspection of SDSS spectra and various auxiliary data products, we have identified 26 accreting compact white dwarf binaries (aCWDBs) in eFEDS, of which 24 are proven X-ray emitters. Among those 26 objects, there are 12 dwarf novae, three WZ Sge-like disk-accreting nonmagnetic CVs with low accretion rates, five likely nonmagnetic high accretion rate nova-like CVs, two magnetic CVs of the polar subcategory, and three double degenerates (AM CVn objects). Period bouncing candidates and magnetic systems are rarer than expected in this sample, but it is too small for a thorough statistical analysis. Fourteen of the systems are new discoveries, of which five are fainter than the Gaia magnitude limit. Thirteen aCWDBs have measured or estimated orbital periods, of which five were presented here. Through a Zeeman analysis, we revise the magnetic field estimate of the polar system J0926+0105, which is likely a low-field polar at B = 16 MG. We quantified the success of X-ray versus optical/UV selection of compact white dwarf binaries which will be relevant for the full SDSS-V survey. We also identified six white dwarf main sequence (WDMS) systems, among them there is one confirmed pre-CV at an orbital period of 17.6 h and another pre-CV candidate. Conclusions. This work presents successful initial work in building large samples of all kinds of accreting and X-ray emitting compact white dwarf binaries that will be continued over the full hemisphere in the years to come.
