ABSTRACT
MAXI J1820+070, a black hole candidate first detected in early 2018 March, was observed by XMM–Newton during the outburst rise. In this letter we report on the spectral and timing analysis ...of the XMM–Newton X-ray and UV data, as well as contemporaneous X-ray data from the Swift satellite. The X-ray spectrum is well described by a hard thermal Comptonization continuum. The XMM–Newton X-ray light curve shows a pronounced dipping interval, and spectral analysis indicates that it is caused by a moderately ionized partial covering absorber. The XMM–Newton/OM U-filter data do not reveal any signs of the 17 h orbital modulation that was seen later on during the outburst decay. The UV/X-ray cross-correlation function shows a complex shape, with a peak at positive lags of about 4 s and a precognition dip at negative lags, which is absent during the X-ray dipping episode. Such shape could arise if the UV emission comes partially from synchrotron self-Compton emission near the black hole, as well as from reprocessing of the X-rays in the colder accretion disc further out.
We present the analysis of a sample of 35 candidate Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected in the nearby universe (average redshift ) with the Swift-BAT 100-month survey. All sources ...have available NuSTAR data, thus allowing us to constrain with unprecedented quality important spectral parameters such as the obscuring torus line-of-sight column density (NH,z), the average torus column density (NH,tor), and the torus covering factor (fc). We compare the best-fit results obtained with the widely used MYTorus (Murphy & Yaqoob 2009) model with those of the recently published borus02 model (Balokovi et al. 2018) used in the same geometrical configuration of MYTorus (i.e., with fc = 0.5). We find a remarkable agreement between the two, although with increasing dispersion in NH,z moving toward higher column densities. We then use borus02 to measure fc. High-fc sources have, on average, smaller offset between NH,z and NH,tor than low-fc ones. Therefore, low fc values can be linked to a "patchy torus" scenario, where the AGN is seen through an overdense region in the torus, while high-fc objects are more likely to be obscured by a more uniform gas distribution. Finally, we find potential evidence of an inverse trend between fc and the AGN 2-10 keV luminosity, i.e., sources with higher fc values have on average lower luminosities.
We present the joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton spectral analysis in the 0.6-70 keV band of three candidate Compton-thick (CT-) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected in the 100-month Swift-BAT catalog. ...These objects were previously classified as CT-AGNs based on low-quality Swift-X-ray Telescope (XRT) and Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) data, and had soft photon indices (Γ > 2.2) that suggested a potential overestimation of the line-of-sight column density (NH,LOS). Thanks to the high-quality NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data we were able to determine that in all three objects the photon index was significantly overestimated, and two out of three sources are reclassified from CT to Compton thin, confirming a previously observed trend, i.e., that a significant fraction of BAT-selected, candidate CT-AGNs with poor soft X-ray data are reclassified as Compton thin when the NuSTAR data are added to the fit. Finally, thanks to both the good XMM-Newton spatial resolution and the high NuSTAR and XMM-Newton spectral quality, we found that the third object in our sample was associated to the wrong counterpart: the correct one, 2MASX J10331570+5252182, has redshift z = 0.14036, which makes it one of the very few candidate CT-AGNs in the 100 months BAT catalog detected at z > 0.1, and a rare CT quasar.
ABSTRACT
The Galactic black hole transient GRS 1915+105 is famous for its markedly variable X-ray and radio behaviour, and for being the archetypal galactic source of relativistic jets. It entered an ...X-ray outburst in 1992 and has been active ever since. Since 2018 GRS 1915+105 has declined into an extended low-flux X-ray plateau, occasionally interrupted by multiwavelength flares. Here, we report the radio and X-ray properties of GRS 1915+105 collected in this new phase, and compare the recent data to historic observations. We find that while the X-ray emission remained unprecedentedly low for most of the time following the decline in 2018, the radio emission shows a clear mode change half way through the extended X-ray plateau in 2019 June: from low flux (∼3 mJy) and limited variability, to marked flaring with fluxes two orders of magnitude larger. GRS 1915+105 appears to have entered a low-luminosity canonical hard state, and then transitioned to an unusual accretion phase, characterized by heavy X-ray absorption/obscuration. Hence, we argue that a local absorber hides from the observer the accretion processes feeding the variable jet responsible for the radio flaring. The radio–X-ray correlation suggests that the current low X-ray flux state may be a signature of a super-Eddington state akin to the X-ray binaries SS433 or V404 Cyg.
How the accreted mass settling on the surface of a neutron star affects the topology of the magnetic field and how the secular evolution of the binary system depends on the magnetic field change is ...still an open issue. We report evidence for a clear drop in the observed magnetic field in the accreting pulsar V0332+53 after undergoing a bright 3-month long X-ray outburst. We determine the field from the position of the fundamental cyclotron line in its X-ray spectrum and relate it to the luminosity. For equal levels of luminosity, in the declining phase we measure a systematically lower value of the cyclotron line energy with respect to the rising phase. This results in a drop of ∼1.7 × 1011 G of the observed field between the onset and the end of the outburst. The settling of the accreted plasma on to the polar cap seems to induce a distortion of the magnetic field lines weakening their intensity along the accretion columns. Therefore, the dissipation rate of the magnetic field could be much faster than previously estimated, unless the field is able to restore its original configuration on a time-scale comparable with the outbursts recurrence time.
Context. Highly magnetized pulsars accreting matter in a binary system are bright sources in the X-ray band (0.1–100 keV). Despite the early comprehension of the basic emission mechanism, their ...spectral energy distribution is generally described by phenomenological or simplified models. Aims. We propose a study of the spectral emission from the high mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 0115+63 by means of thermal and bulk Comptonization models based on the physical properties of such objects. Methods. For this purpose, we analyze the BeppoSAX data in the energy range 0.7–100 keV of the 1999 giant outburst, 12 days after the maximum. We focus first on the phase averaged emission, and then on the phase resolved spectra, by modeling the system using a two-component continuum. Results. At higher energy, above ~7 keV, the emission is due to thermal and bulk Comptonization of the seed photons produced by cyclotron cooling of the accretion column, and at lower energy, the emission is due to thermal Comptonization of a blackbody source in a diffuse halo close to the stellar surface. Phase resolved analysis establishes that most of the emission in the main peak comes from the column, while the low energy component gives a nearly constant contribution throughout the phase. Conclusions. From the best fit parameters, we argue that the cyclotron emission is produced ~$ 1.7$ km above the stellar surface, and escapes from the column near its base, where the absorption features are generated by the interaction with the magnetic field in the halo. We find that in 4U 0115+63 , the observed spectrum is dominated by reprocessed cyclotron radiation, whereas in other bright sources with stronger magnetic fields such as Her X-1, the spectrum is dominated by reprocessed bremsstrahlung.
We present the combined Chandra and Swift-BAT spectral analysis of seven Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from the Swift-BAT 100 month catalog. We selected nearby (z ≤ 0.03) sources lacking a ROSAT ...counterpart that never previously been observed with Chandra in the 0.3-10 keV energy range, and targeted these objects with 10 ks Chandra ACIS-S observations. The X-ray spectral fitting over the 0.3-150 keV energy range allows us to determine that all the objects are significantly obscured, with NH ≥ 1023 cm−2 at a >99% confidence level. Moreover, one to three sources are candidate Compton-thick Active Galactic Nuclei (CT-AGNs; i.e., NH ≥ 1024 cm−2). We also test the recent spectral curvature method developed by Koss et al. to find candidate CT-AGNs, finding a good agreement between our results and their predictions. Because the selection criteria we adopted were effective in detecting highly obscured AGNs, further observations of these and other Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from the Swift-BAT 100 month catalog will allow us to create a statistically significant sample of highly obscured AGNs, therefore providing a better understanding of the physics of the obscuration processes.
Symbiotic star surveys have traditionally relied almost exclusively on low resolution optical spectroscopy. However, we can obtain a more reliable estimate of their total Galactic population by using ...all available signatures of the symbiotic phenomenon. Here we report the discovery of a hard X-ray source, 4PBC J0642.9+5528, in the Swift hard X-ray all-sky survey, and identify it with a poorly studied red giant, SU Lyn, using pointed Swift observations and ground-based optical spectroscopy. The X-ray spectrum, the optical to UV spectrum, and the rapid UV variability of SU Lyn are all consistent with our interpretation that it is a symbiotic star containing an accreting white dwarf. The symbiotic nature of SU Lyn went unnoticed until now, because it does not exhibit emission lines strong enough to be obvious in low resolution spectra. We argue that symbiotic stars without shell-burning have weak emission lines, and that the current lists of symbiotic stars are biased in favour of shell-burning systems. We conclude that the true population of symbiotic stars has been underestimated, potentially by a large factor.
Abstract
The accretion-powered X-ray pulsar 4U 1626−67 is one of the few highly magnetized pulsars that accretes through Roche lobe overflow from a low-mass companion. The characteristics of its ...broad-band spectrum are similar to those of X-ray pulsars hosted in a high-mass X-ray binary system, with a broad resonant cyclotron scattering feature (CRSF) at ∼37 keV. In this work, we examine the pulse-resolved and the pulse-averaged broad-band spectrum using data from NuSTAR and Swift. We use the Becker & Wolff model of bulk+thermal Comptonization to infer key physical parameters of the accretion column flow and a broad-band model for the disc-reflected spectrum. In the softer X-ray band, we need to add a soft blackbody component with kT
bb ∼ 0.5 keV, whose characteristics indicate a possible origin from the neutron star surface. Residuals suggest that the shape of the cyclotron line could be more satisfactorily fitted using a narrow core and broader wings and, at higher energies, a second harmonic could be present at ∼61 keV.
Compared to mass transfer in cataclysmic variables, the nature of accretion in symbiotic binaries in which red giants transfer material to white dwarfs (WDs) has been difficult to uncover. The ...accretion flows in a symbiotic binary are most clearly observable, however, when there is no quasi-steady shell burning on the WD to hide them. RT Cru is the prototype of such non-burning symbiotics, with its hard (δ-type) X-ray emission providing a view of its innermost accretion structures. In the past 20 yr, RT Cru has experienced two similar optical brightening events, separated by ~4000 days and with amplitudes of ΔV ~ 1.5 mag. After Swift became operative, the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) detector revealed a hard X-ray brightening event almost in coincidence with the second optical peak. Spectral and timing analyses of multi-wavelength observations that we describe here, from NuSTAR, Suzaku, Swift/X-Ray Telescope (XRT) + BAT + UltraViolet Optical Telescope (UVOT) (photometry) and optical photometry and spectroscopy, indicate that accretion proceeds through a disk that reaches down to the WD surface. The scenario in which a massive, magnetic WD accretes from a magnetically truncated accretion disk is not supported. For example, none of our data show the minute-time-scale periodic modulations (with tight upper limits from X-ray data) expected from a spinning, magnetic WD. Moreover, the similarity of the UV and X-ray fluxes, as well as the approximate constancy of the hardness ratio within the BAT band, indicate that the boundary layer of the accretion disk remained optically thin to its own radiation throughout the brightening event, during which the rate of accretion onto the WD increased to 6.7 × 10−9M⊙ yr−1 (d/2 kpc)2. For the first time from a WD symbiotic, the NuSTAR spectrum showed a Compton reflection hump at E > 10 keV, due to hard X-rays from the boundary layer reflecting off of the surface of the WD; the reflection amplitude was 0.77 ± 0.21. The best fit spectral model, including reflection, gave a maximum post-shock temperature of kT = 53 ± 4 keV, which implies a WD mass of 1.25 ± 0.02 M⊙. Although the long-term optical variability in RT Cru is reminiscent of dwarf-novae-type outbursts, the hard X-ray behavior does not correspond to that observed in well-known dwarf nova. An alternative explanation for the brightening events could be that they are due to an enhancement of the accretion rate as the WD travels through the red giant wind in a wide orbit, with a period of about ~4000 days. In either case, the constancy of the hard X-ray spectrum while the accretion rate rose suggests that the accretion-rate threshold between a mostly optically thin and thick boundary layer, in this object, may be higher than previously thought.
