A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton ...final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015-2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV.
Introduction
Complement immunodeficiencies (excluding hereditary angioedema and mannose binding lectin deficiency) are rare. Published literature consists largely of case reports and small series. We ...collated data from 18 cities across Europe to provide an overview of primarily homozygous, rather than partial genotypes and their impact and management.
Methods
Patients were recruited through the ESID registry. Clinical and laboratory information was collected onto standardized forms and analyzed using SPSS software.
Results
Seventy-seven patients aged 1 to 68 years were identified. 44 % presented in their first decade of life. 29 % had C2 deficiency, defects in 11 other complement factors were found. 50 (65 %) had serious invasive infections. 61 % of
Neisseria meningitidis
infections occurred in patients with terminal pathway defects, while 74 % of
Streptococcus pneumoniae
infections occurred in patients with classical pathway defects (
p
< 0.001). Physicians in the UK were more likely to prescribe antibiotic prophylaxis than colleagues on the Continent for patients with classical pathway defects. After diagnosis, 16 % of patients suffered serious bacterial infections. Age of the patient and use of prophylactic antibiotics were not associated with subsequent infection risk. Inflammatory/autoimmune diseases were not seen in patients with terminal pathway, but in one third of patients classical and alternative pathway defects.
Conclusion
The clinical phenotypes of specific complement immunodeficiencies vary considerably both in terms of the predominant bacterial pathogen, and the risk and type of auto-inflammatory disease. Appreciation of these phenotypic differences should help both immunologists and other specialists in their diagnosis and management of these rare and complex patients.
Background
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a life-threatening complication of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC). Little is known about the effect of intensity of anticoagulation ...on NOAC-ICH. We describe the current use of coagulation testing in the emergency setting and explore associations with baseline size and expansion of hematoma as determined in a previous study.
Methods
Data from the prospective multicenter RASUNOA registry were analyzed. Patients with NOAC-ICH were enrolled between February 2012 and December 2014. Frequency of local test performance of specific (anti-factor Xa tests, diluted thrombin time) and non-specific tests (international normalized ratio (INR), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), thrombin time) was analyzed. The association of anticoagulation intensity at admission with hematoma volume and hematoma expansion was explored.
Results
In 61 NOAC-ICH patients enrolled at 21 centers, drug-specific coagulation testing was performed in 16 cases (26%), and only 29% of centers appeared to use drug-specific tests in NOAC-ICH at all. In some cases, INR and aPTT values were normal despite drug concentrations in the peak range. In patients with available drug-specific concentrations, 50% had drug levels in the peak range at admission. Higher intensity of anticoagulation was not associated with higher hematoma volume at admission or with subsequent hematoma expansion.
Conclusion
Drug-specific tests are only infrequently used in NOAC-ICH. Normal results in non-specific coagulation do not reliably rule out peak range concentrations. Anticoagulation intensity at admission does not predict baseline hematoma volume or subsequent hematoma expansion.
An electron in liquid helium forces open a cavity referred as an electron bubble. These objects have been studied in many past experiments. It has been discovered that under certain conditions other ...negatively charged objects can be produced but the nature of these “exotic ions” is not understood. We have made a series of experiments to measure the mobility of these objects, and have detected at least 18 ions with different mobility. We also find strong evidence that in addition to these objects there are ions present which have a continuous distribution of mobility. We then describe experiments in which we attempt to produce exotic ions by optically exciting an electron bubble to a higher energy quantum state. To within the sensitivity of the experiment, we have not been able to detect any exotic ions produced as a result of this process. We discuss three possible explanations for the exotic ions, namely impurities, negative helium ions, and fission of the electron wave function. Each of these explanations has difficulties but as far as we can see, of the three, fission is the only plausible explanation of the results which have been obtained.
Invasive mucormycosis (IM) is a rare invasive fungal infection with a high mortality rate. However, data concerning the clinical and economic burden of IM are scarce.

A retrospective cost-of-illness analysis of cases with IM extracted from FungiScope – Global Registry for Emerging Fungal Infections, accessible through the epidemiological research platform www.ClinicalSurveys.net, was undertaken. Results of patients with IM were compared with those of matched patients with similar underlying conditions based on the German Diagnosis Related Group (G-DRG) coding.
Out of 46 patients with probable/proven IM, 31 (67%) patients were male and the median age was 53 years (range 11–88 years). Forty-two patients (92%) had haematological diseases as the most common risk factor. Analysis of cost factors identified antifungal treatment due to IM as the primary cost driver €22,816, 95% confidence interval (CI) €15,036–32,346, with mean overall direct treatment costs of €53,261 (95% CI €39,660–68,825). Compared with matched patients, patients with IM were treated in hospital for 26.5 additional days (standard deviation 31.8 days; P < 0.001), resulting in mean additional costs of €32,991 (95% CI €21,558–46,613; P < 0.001). Probable IM, as well as absence of chemotherapy, surgical measures due to IM, and antifungal prophylaxis were associated with lower overall costs. Nineteen patients (41.3%) died during hospitalization.
This study demonstrates the considerable healthcare burden of IM. The choice of antifungal agent for treatment of IM had no impact on overall cost.
Objectives The aim of this study was to quantify acute myocardial retention of cardiac-derived stem cells (CDCs) and evaluate different delivery methods with positron emission tomography (PET). ...Background Success of stem cell transplantation for cardiac regeneration is partially limited by low retention/engraftment of the delivered cells. A clinically applicable method for accurate quantification of cell retention would enable optimization of cell delivery. Methods The CDCs were derived from syngeneic, male Wistar Kyoto (WK) rats labeled with 18 F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (18 FDG) and injected intramyocardially into the ischemic region of female WK rats after permanent left coronary artery ligation. The effects of fibrin glue (FG), bradycardia (adenosine), and cardiac arrest were examined. Imaging with18 FDG PET was performed for quantification of cell retention. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the male-specific SRY gene was performed to validate the PET results. Results Myocardial retention of cells suspended in phosphate-buffered saline 1 h after delivery was 17.6 ± 11.5% by PCR and 17.8 ± 7.3% by PET. When CDCs were injected immediately after induction of cardiac arrest, retention was increased to 75.6 ± 18.6%. Adenosine slowed the ventricular rate and doubled CDC retention (35.4 ± 5.3%). A similar increase in CDC retention was observed after epicardial application of FG at the injection site (37.5 ± 8.2%). The PCR revealed a significant increase in 3-week cell engraftment in the FG animals (22.1 ± 18.6% and 5.3 ± 3.1%, for FG and phosphate-buffered saline, respectively). Conclusions In vivo PET permits accurate measurement of CDC retention early after intramyocardial delivery. Sealing injection sites with FG or lowering ventricular rate by adenosine might be clinically translatable methods for improving stem cell engraftment in a beating heart.
Purpose
Intensification of antileukemic treatment and progress in supportive management have improved the survival rates of children with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, morbidity and early ...mortality in these patients are still very high, especially in children with acute monoblastic leukemia (AML FAB M5). Inflammatory syndromes complicating the management of these children after application of cytosine arabinoside and due to hyperleukocytosis at initial presentation have been reported. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) has been described as a serious and life-threatening acute complication during treatment of different oncologic entities; however, data on HLH in children with AML FAB M5 are extremely rare.
Methods
A retrospective study of all children with AML FAB M5 treated at our institution between 1993 and 2013 was performed to describe the clinical characteristics of patients who developed an inflammatory syndrome with HLH during oncologic treatment.
Results
Three of 10 children developed an inflammatory syndrome with fever, elevation of C-reactive protein, hyperferritinemia, elevation of soluble interleukin-2, and hemophagocytosis during prolonged aplasia following the first cycle of chemotherapy not responding to broad-spectrum antibiotics. No infectious agents could be identified; the initial symptoms occurred 17, 18, and 28 days after diagnosis of AML, respectively. The children immediately responded to dexamethasone; however, the same syndrome was observed again after the second cycle of chemotherapy and, in one patient, also after the third cycle.
Conclusions
Treating physicians should be aware of an inflammatory syndrome resembling HLH in children with monoblastic leukemia since this problem might extremely complicate management and supportive care of these children. The co-incidence of monoblastic leukemia with HLH might be explained by cytokines released from the monoblastic leukemic cells themselves.

disease (GvHD) from infections or toxicity. Antigen-presenting cells ...such as monocytes/macrophages and dendritic cells are involved in GvHD pathogenesis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). To test whether ferritin, an iron storage marker and macrophage activation-linked acute-phase protein, represents a candidate biomarker for acute or chronic GvHD in pediatric HSCT, we retrospectively evaluated a 2-year follow-up data from 131 eligible consecutive patients with different malignant and nonmalignant diseases who underwent allogeneic HSCT. Thirteen patients (10 %) suffered from acute GvHD II–IV°, 18 (14 %) had limited, and 14 (11 %) had extensive chronic GvHD. In extension of previous studies in adults investigating pre-transplant ferritin, our data show that post-HSCT hyperferritinemia (analyzed on days 0, +30, +60, +100, +180, +360, and +720) was significantly associated with decreased long-term survival (
p
< 0.001–0.03) in children and adolescents. Increased ferritin concentrations were associated with number and timing of red blood cell transfusions and toxic or infectious multi-organ failure but did not show significant differences between patients
without
GvHD and
with
acute grades II–IV, limited, or extensive chronic GvHD. Thus, our data do not identify ferritin as specifically GvHD-linked biomarker; however, they support the prognostic value of ferritin levels for outcome after HSCT in children.
