The Slovenian written language begins with the works of Primus Truber, so that it must be regarded as its creation - this, in short, would be the result of 200 years of research into the beginnings ...of Slovenian literacy. The purpose of this work is now to create a little more clarity here and at the same time to ask the question of Primus Trüber as the creator of the Slovenian written language on a different basis than before. Another question is, how did he, when he created one, come to his Slovenian written language?
Die slovenische Schriftsprache beginnt mit den Werken Primus Trubers, so daß sie als dessen Schöpfung angesehen werden muß - dies wäre, kurz gefaßt, das Ergebnis der inzwischen zweihundertjährigen Forschung, die sich mit den Anfängen der slovenischen Schriftsprachlichkeit befaßt. Anliegen dieser Arbeit ist nun, hier etwas mehr Klarheit zu schaffen und damit zugleich die Frage nach Primus Trüber als Schöpfer der slovenischen Schriftsprache auf einer anderen Grundlage als bisher zu stellen. Eine andere, Frage ist, wie er denn, so er eine solche geschaffen hat, zu seiner slovenischen Schriftsprache gekommen ist.
Slovene intellectuals' responses to efforts to establish a common literary language for the South Slavs are traced from the Reformation era to WWI, distinguishing three differently motivated ...movements: (1) Protestant reformers, who wanted to base the common language on one of the regional dialects to give uneducated speakers access to the new doctrine; (2) Illyrists, who intended to create a new nation by creating a sophisticated national South Slavic or Pan-Slavic literature; & (3) Neo-Illyrists, whose goal was the creation of a common literary language to strengthen identification with a Yugoslav state after the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy. With few exceptions, Slovene clergy, writers, & intellectuals were skeptical to proposals that would involve fusion of the Slovene & Croat dialect bases; the minimalist notion of the Slovene literary language championed by Primus Truber, Jernej Kopitar, France Preseren, & Ivan Cankar prevailed in the end. 61 References. The use of hendiadys - a figure of speech in which two words are connected with the conjunction and to express an idea that in normal language use is realized by an independent noun with a modifier - ...in the sixteenth-century writings by Primoz Trubar, Martin Luther, & their contemporaries is investigated in quantitative & qualitative analyses of their writings to determine occurrence frequency, author- & language-specific use, & syntactic & semantic characteristics. Trubar's predilection for hendiadys in comparison to other writers is attested as he uses the figure very often in both Slovene & German texts. Hendiadyses consisting of nouns, verbs, adjectives, & adverbs are identified & various types of semantic relationship between the twin elements are described: synonymy, antonymy, addition, & complementation. Views expressed in the literature that Trubar used hendiadys as a translational aid to make new terms understandable to readers is rejected, as his usage is found to be stylistically motivated. 30 References.
