SUMMARY
We investigated long-term treatment outcomes and the feasibility of chemoradiotherapy consisting of daily-low-dose 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin (LDFP) chemotherapy plus radiotherapy for Stage ...I-II squamous cell esophageal cancer. Treatment records from the 2000 through 2008 period were reviewed retrospectively. Fractionated radiotherapy was performed with a total dose of 60 Gy delivered in 2 Gy per fraction. LDFP chemotherapy, as continuous infusion of 200 mg/m2 5-fluorouracil combined with one hour infusion of 4 mg/m2 cisplatin, was administered on the same days as radiotherapy. Survival was calculated by the Kaplan–Meier method. Survival, responses, failure patterns, and toxicities were evaluated. Seventy-six (47 stage I and 29 stage II) patients were analyzed with a median follow-up of 93.6 months. The 8-year overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and cause-specific survival (CSS) rates were 63.4%, 49.8%, and 76.7%, respectively. The 8-year OS, PFS, and CSS for stage I and stage II patients were 71.0%/56.1%/82.9% and 45.2%/40.2%/66.6%, respectively. Sixty-eight patients (89.5%) completed the treatment regimen. A complete response (CR) was achieved in 68 patients (89.5%). Twenty-five patients (36.8%) experienced recurrence after CR. The failure patterns were (overlap included): local failure (n = 12), nodal metastasis (n = 12), distant metastasis (n = 3), details unknown (n = 2). Salvage therapy was performed for local failure; endoscopic therapy (n = 7) or surgery (n = 2). Six patients remain alive without relapse after salvage endoscopic therapy. Major Grade 3 or higher acute adverse events were leukopenia (22%), anorexia (17%), and esophagitis (11%). Major late toxicities (Grade 3 or 4) involved pericardial effusion (12%), pleural effusion (4%), and esophageal stenosis (3%). Chemoradiotherapy with LDFP provided favorable long-term survival with acceptable toxicity for Stage I-II squamous cell esophageal cancer. The tumor response was excellent, but close endoscopic follow-up is essential for detecting and treating local recurrence.

Fishing of graphitic nanotubes with a macroscopic glass hook: A ∼30 mm long fiber (see figure and cover) is readily processed from a suspension of self‐assembled nanotubes with one‐handed helical ...chirality, formed from the (R)‐ or (S)‐enantiomer of chiral amphiphile 2. The majority of the nanotubes in the fiber are unidirectionally oriented along the fiber axis. Upon doping with I2, the fiber displays an anisotropic electrical conduction along the fiber axis more than an order of magnitude greater than that across the fiber axis.
We demonstrate emergence of both the chiral soliton lattice and skyrmion lattice and investigate their magnetic-field variation in the strained Cu2OSeO3 thin plate by means of small-angle resonant ...soft x-ray scattering. The tensile strain stabilizes a helical spin structure with the modulation vector along the strain direction. Consequently, when increasing the field perpendicular to the modulation vector, it undergoes large shrinkage and higher-order diffraction peaks are also observed, which is in accord with a typical feature of the chiral soliton lattice. The skyrmion lattice also appears in the presence of tensile strain but is elongated along the strain direction in reciprocal space. The magnetic-field dependence of the modulation vector along the strain direction agrees with the theoretical model quantitatively, while that along other directions does not. The agreement, however, becomes worse at lower temperatures, which may be attributed to the large potential barrier for skyrmion annihilation.
Background and aims: The genetic contribution to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is under investigation. Recent evidence indicates a significant linkage between a locus on chromosome 19p13 and IBD. ...We investigated the association between an intercellular adhesion molecule 1 gene (ICAM-1) polymorphism located on chromosome 19p13 and IBD in a Japanese population. Methods: We compared 207 Japanese patients who had IBD (79 with Crohn’s disease (CD); 128 with ulcerative colitis (UC)) with 103 unrelated Japanese controls. We determined R241G and K469E polymorphisms of the ICAM-1 gene using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. Results: Both frequency and carriage rate of the K469 allele were significantly higher in IBD patients than in controls (allelic frequency, pc=0.0026; carriage rate, pc=0.0034; odds ratio 2.59; 95% confidence interval 1.42–4.68). Furthermore, the frequency of the K469 allele was significantly increased in both CD and UC. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that both K469 allelic frequency and K469 carriage rate were significantly higher in patients with the small bowel and colon type of CD and entire colitis compared with healthy controls. Conclusions: We identified an overall association between IBD and ICAM-1 K469 in a Japanese population. Further studies of this chromosome region are required to elucidate the gene responsible for IBD.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes for treating liver hemorrhage in rabbits with acute thrombocytopenia.
Methods: Thrombocytopenia (platelets < 50 000 μL−1) was induced in rabbits by repeated blood withdrawal (100 mL kg−1 in total) and isovolemic transfusion of autologous washed red blood cells. H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes with platelet‐poor plasma (PPP), platelet‐rich plasma (PRP), PPP, ADP liposomes with PPP or H12‐(PBS)‐liposomes/PPP, were administered to the thrombocytopenic rabbits, and liver hemorrhage was induced by penetrating liver injury.
Results: Administration of H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes and of PRP rescued all thrombocytopenic rabbits from liver hemorrhage as a result of potent hemostasis at the liver bleeding site, although rabbits receiving PPP or ADP liposomes showed 20% survival in the first 24 h. Administration of H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes and of PRP suppressed both bleeding volume and time from the site of liver injury. H12‐(phosphate‐buffered saline)‐liposomes lacking ADP also improved rabbit survival after liver hemorrhage, although their hemostatic effect was weaker. In rabbits with severe thrombocytopenia (25 000 platelets μL−1), the hemostatic effects of H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes tended to be attenuated as compared with those of PRP treatment. Histologic examination revealed that H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes accumulated at the bleeding site in the liver. Notably, neither macrothombi nor microthrombi were detected in the lung, kidney or liver in rabbits treated with H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes.
Conclusions: H12‐(ADP)‐liposomes appear to be a safe and effective therapeutic tool for acute thrombocytopenic trauma patients with massive bleeding.
Since 1990 R&Ds of microbeam technology has been progressed at the TIARA facility of JAEA Takasaki. In order to meet a wide variety of ion beam applications, analysis, radiation effect studies, or ...fabrication in regions of micro- or nano-structures, three different types of ion microbeam systems were developed. In these systems, high-spatial resolutions have been achieved and techniques of micro-PIXE, single ion hit and particle beam writing (PBW) were also developed for these applications. Microbeams, on the other hand, require the highest quality of beams from the accelerators, the cyclotron in particular, which was an important part of the microbeam technology of TIARA. In this paper, the latest progress of the ion microbeam technology and applications are summarized and a future prospect of them is discussed.
Abstract Little is known about projections from the cerebral cortex to the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) which contains the cell bodies of primary sensory afferents innervating masticatory ...muscle spindles and periodontal ligaments of the teeth. To address this issue, we employed retrograde (Fluorogold, FG) and anterograde (biotinylated dextranamine, BDA) tracing techniques in the rat. After injections of FG into the Vmes, a large number of neurons were retrogradely labeled in the prefrontal cortex including the medial agranular cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, prelimbic cortex, infralimbic cortex, deep peduncular cortex and insular cortex; the labeling was bilateral, but with an ipsilateral predominance to the injection site. Almost no FG-labeled neurons were found in the somatic sensorimotor cortex. After BDA injections into the prefrontal cortex, anterogradely labeled axon fibers and boutons were distributed bilaterally in a topographic pattern within the Vmes, but with an ipsilateral predominance to the injection site. The rostral Vmes received more preferential projections from the medial agranular cortex, while the deep peduncular cortex and insular cortex projected more preferentially to the caudal Vmes. Several BDA-labeled axonal boutons made close associations (possible synaptic contacts) with the cell bodies of Vmes neurons. The present results have revealed the direct projections from the prefrontal cortex to the primary sensory neurons in the Vmes and their unique features, suggesting that deep sensory inputs conveyed by the Vmes neurons from masticatory muscle spindles and periodontal ligaments are regulated with specific biological significance in terms of the descending control by the cerebral cortex.
We report the experimental observation of longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in a multiferroic helimagnet Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22. Temperature gradient applied normal to Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22/Pt interface ...generates inverse spin Hall voltage of spin current origin in Pt, whose magnitude was found to be proportional to bulk magnetization of Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22 even through the successive magnetic transitions among various helimagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases. This finding demonstrates that the helimagnetic spin wave can be an effective carrier of spin current. By controlling the population ratio of spin-helicity domains characterized by clockwise/counter-clockwise manner of spin rotation with use of poling electric field in the ferroelectric helimagnetic phase, we found that spin-helicity domain distribution does not affect the magnitude of spin current injected into Pt. The results suggest that the spin-wave spin current is rather robust against the spin-helicity domain wall, unlike the case with the conventional ferromagnetic domain wall.
