This report describes the synthesis of 4‐aryl‐2‐halopyridines via γ‐functionalization of α,β‐unsaturated nitriles, which were obtained by the HWE reaction with the corresponding ketones. The key ...features of our methods involve a conjugated γ‐enamine formation of α,β‐unsaturated nitrile (enamino nitrile), followed by consecutive intramolecular cyclization, resulting in heteroaromatic compounds like 2‐halopyridines, α‐pyrone, etc.
Developing an effective and efficient recycling process for marine debris (MD) is one of the most urgent issues to maintain environmental sustainability on Earth. However, restricted storage ...capacities and secondary pollution (e.g., microbial adhesion, putrefaction) limit the proper MD recycling. Here, we proposed a complete eco-friendly low-temperature MD pulverizing system that utilizes excessive liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy (LCE) in an LNG propulsion ship to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of MD recycling. The prototype design of the low-temperature pulverization (LTP) system showed that consumable refrigerant (liquid nitrogen) up to 2831 kg per hour could be substituted. Furthermore, with a 20% ship output, 1250 kg of MD could be treated with 363 kg of additional refrigerant. In addition, LTP systems utilizing LCE could increase the storage capacity by more than 10 times compared to bulk MD while minimizing the required energy consumption. To determine the feasibility of LTP for MD recycling, four types of plastics obtained from actual MD from a coastal area in Busan, Korea were classified and tested.
The continuous increase in marine traffic and the construction of several offshore installations has led to a serious concern regarding the risks to offshore platforms from ship collisions. The main ...aim of this study was to carry out a probabilistic collision-risk analysis for offshore platforms exposed to powered collisions with passing vessels using an automatic identification system (AIS) database. The paper first describes the statistical distribution of the ship traffic under study and then considers how this information can be effectively used to estimate collision frequencies and impact energies for various categories of vessel, based on a simple probabilistic method. The effects of various collision mitigation measures, such as the use of enhanced collision alarming devices and the ability of platforms to rotate using thrusters, are considered in the frequency calculations. The risk method presented in this paper can be applied in the design and development phase of both new and existing platforms.
•Proposed a new collision risk analysis procedure of simple probabilistic method for powered vessel with offshore platform.•Described a statistical ship traffic database for the calculation of collision frequency.•Provided a demonstration of the proposed collision risk analysis.
Fire accidents on ships and offshore structures lead to complex non-linear material and geometric behavior, which can cause structural collapse. This not only results in significant casualties, but ...also environmental catastrophes such as oil spills. Thus, for the fire safety design of structures, precise prediction of the structural response to fire using numerical and/or experimental methods is essential. This study aimed to validate the two-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method for predicting the non-linear structural response of H-beams to a propane burner fire by comparison with experimental results. To determine the interaction between a fire simulation and structural analysis, the Fire-Thermomechanical Interface model was introduced. The Fire Dynamics Simulator and ANSYS Parametric Design Language were used for computational fluid dynamics and the finite element method, respectively. This study validated the two-way FSI method for precisely predicting the non-linear structural response of H-beams to a propane burner fire and proposed the proper time increment for two-way FSI analysis.
This paper aims to validate if intrapancreatic injection of penicillin G can enhance hardness and suture holding capacity (SHC) of the pancreas through prompting the fibrosis process. Soft pancreatic ...texture is constantly mentioned as one of the most contributory predictors of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). Soft pancreas has poor SHC and higher incidence of parenchymal tearing, frequently leading to POPF. From a library of 114 antibiotic compounds, we identified that penicillin G substantially enhanced pancreatic hardness and SHC in experimental mice. Specifically, we injected penicillin G directly into the pancreas. On determined dates, we measured the pancreatic hardness and SHC, respectively, and performed molecular and histological examinations for estimation of the degree of fibrosis. The intrapancreatic injection of penicillin G activated human pancreatic stellate cells (HPSCs) to produce various fibrotic materials such as transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and metalloproteinases-2. The pancreatic hardness and SHC were increased to the maximum at the second day after injection and then it gradually subsided demonstrating its reversibility. Pretreatment of mice with SB431542, an inhibitor of the TGF-β1 receptor, before injecting penicillin G intrapancreatically, significantly abrogated the increase of both pancreatic hardness and SHC caused by penicillin G. This suggested that penicillin G promotes pancreatic fibrosis through the TGF-β1 signaling pathway. Intrapancreatic injection of penicillin G promotes pancreatic hardness and SHC by enhancing pancreatic fibrosis. We thus think that penicillin G could be utilized to prevent and minimize POPF, after validating its actual effectiveness and safety by further studies.
In this paper, we propose a method for compressing the phase component of a full-complex hologram. The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Pleno is undergoing standardization for compressing ...full-complex holograms. If the full-complex hologram is compressed in the form of amplitude and phase components, the three-dimensional information of the hologram may be better preserved. Therefore, in order to solve the disadvantages of the method of independently compressing real and imaginary parts, we propose a method for directly compressing phase information. We select the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), which has the best performance in compressing holograms from previous studies, as the anchor codec, and propose an algorithm for converting the phase information into the form suitable for the HEVC. Since the phase component is very random, we propose a modified phase unwrapping technique to improve this. In addition, in order to make good use of the property of HEVC Intra coding, the phase unwrapping considering Intra prediction is applied, and the most suitable HEVC Intra coding condition is searched. Compared with the result of compressing the phase using the HEVC, the hologram was improved by 2 dB or more and the reconstruction result was improved by more than 4 dB at a compression ratio of 80:1. If the compression ratio is increased, the proposed method has better results.
The present paper (Part II) is a sequel to the previous paper (Part I) Paik JK, Seo JK. doi:10.1016/j.tws.2008.08.005. on the application of nonlinear finite element methods for ultimate strength analysis of steel stiffened-plate structures under combined biaxial compression and lateral pressure actions. In contrast to Part I dealing with plate elements, the present paper (Part II) treats stiffened panels surrounded by strong support members such as longitudinal girders and transverse frames. In similar to Part I, some important factors of influence such as structural dimensions, initial imperfections, loading types and computational techniques in association with ultimate limit states are studied. Some useful insights in terms of nonlinear finite element method modeling are developed using ANSYS code together with the ALPS/ULSAP semi-analytical method, the latter being for the purpose of a comparison.
The accidental spillage of flammable liquids on in-service ships and offshore installations may lead to pool fires, which are likely to spread over a particularly large area in large compartments ...under ship motion, resulting in extensive damage. However, the effect of the spreading extent of liquid fuel due to inclined ship motion on pool fire consequences has not been considered in the existing literature. Thus, in this study, fuel discharge experiments were conducted to investigate the spreading behaviour under different substrate inclination angles and discharge rates. The experimental results were analysed to derive closed-form expressions to predict the spreading extent of liquid fuel in large compartments. Additionally, the effects of surface inclination on fire consequences were investigated using the Fire Dynamics Simulator in terms of the heat release rate. The findings can provide guidance for effective fire safety design and establishing a realistic fire modelling methodology for ships and offshore installations.
The rapid increase in offshore to onshore hydrocarbon transportation has prompted the expansion of subsea pipeline networks to meet energy demands. In offshore platform, unexpected accidents such as ...fractional dents or fractures may occur in proximity of subsea pipelines due to transverse loading or external forces during operation and installation. Partial damage may cause leaks and oil spills, and in serious cases, the sequence may lead to fire and severe explosions. Meticulous safety measures should consider safety issues and mitigate different extent of risk to the life, environment and assets. To avoid these undesirable events, this study presents a probabilistic and numerical modelling analysis of accidental scenarios to verify the safety of subsea pipelines under different conditions. An impact analysis of transverse loading on a subsea pipeline is performed using scenario sampling and finite element analysis to assess safety measures and mitigate damage by evaluating the effects of impacts in different possible accidental scenarios.
•Implied probabilistic method to estimate risk on subsea pipelines on impact loading.•Proposed analytical and numerical analysis of selective scenarios in risk assessment.•Introduced a guideline for risk, corrosion effect and exceedance curve estimation.
In this paper, we propose a new method for coding a full complex hologram with random phase. Since holograms with random phase have very unique spatial and frequency characteristics, a new ...compression method suitable for such holograms is required. We analyze the frequency characteristics of holograms with random phases and propose a new adaptive discrete wavelet transform (aDWT). Next, we propose a new modified zerotree alogrithm (mZTA) suitable for the subband configuration generated by the modified wavelet transform method. The results of the compression using the proposed method showed higher efficiency than the previous method, and the reconstructed images showed visually superior results.
