Redox homeostasis is essential for the maintenance of diverse cellular processes. Cancer cells have higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) than normal cells as a result of hypermetabolism, ...but the redox balance is maintained in cancer cells due to their marked antioxidant capacity. Recently, anticancer therapies that induce oxidative stress by increasing ROS and/or inhibiting antioxidant processes have received significant attention. The acceleration of accumulative ROS disrupts redox homeostasis and causes severe damage in cancer cells. In this review, we describe ROS-inducing cancer therapy and the anticancer mechanism employed by prooxidative agents. To understand the comprehensive biological response to certain prooxidative anticancer drugs such as 2-methoxyestradiol, buthionine sulfoximine, cisplatin, doxorubicin, imexon, and motexafin gadolinium, we propose and visualize the drug-gene, drug-cell process, and drug-disease interactions involved in oxidative stress induction and antioxidant process inhibition as well as specific side effects of these drugs using pathway analysis with a big data-based text-mining approach. Our review will be helpful to improve the therapeutic effects of anticancer drugs by providing information about biological changes that occur in response to prooxidants. For future directions, there is still a need for pharmacogenomic studies on prooxidative agents as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of the prooxidants and/or antioxidant-inhibitor agents for effective anticancer therapy through selective killing of cancer cells.
Background
Although several studies have documented the histological features of uterine mesonephric‐like adenocarcinoma (MLA), its cytological features have been rarely reported.
Methods
We searched ...for histologically confirmed uterine MLA cases in the pathology archives of three institutions between 2010 and 2021. All available cytology slides were examined to identify the cytological features of uterine MLA.
Results
We included 16 patients with uterine MLA and reviewed the slides obtained from 21 cytology samples. Samples were obtained from the cervicovagina (9/21, 42.9%), peritoneal washing (8/21, 38.1%), pleural effusion (2/21, 9.5%), and transbronchial needle aspiration of mediastinal lymph node (2/21, 9.5%). Preparation methods included ThinPrep (11/21, 52.4%), SurePath (8/21, 38.1%), and conventional smear (2/21, 9.5%). Regardless of the sampling site and preparation method, cytology samples displayed tight three‐dimensional cellular clusters showing monotonous, small‐to‐medium‐sized, round, hyperchromatic nuclei, indistinct nucleoli, scant cytoplasm, and high nuclear‐to‐cytoplasmic ratio. Approximately half of the samples (10/21, 47.6%) showed hyaline‐like globules. Mitotic figures (7/21, 33.3%) and apoptotic bodies (13/21, 61.9%) were also observed. No tumor diathesis or nuclear feathering was identified.
Conclusions
Irrespective of sampling site and preparation method, the majority of uterine MLA cases showed the following cytological features: tight three‐dimensional cellular clusters showing small‐to‐medium‐sized, round, hyperchromatic nuclei with indistinct nucleoli and high nuclear‐to‐cytoplasm ratio. In case a cytology sample suspicious of a glandular lesion displays these cytological features, which are distinct from those of endocervical adenocarcinoma, uterine MLA should be included in the differential diagnosis.
Recent studies have highlighted that a primary mechanism of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is the fluid dynamical response to the Tibetan Plateau (TP), that is, orographically forced Rossby ...waves. With this mechanism in mind, this study explores how changes in the location of the TP affect the EASM precipitation. Specifically, the TP is moved in the four cardinal directions using idealized general circulation model experiments. The results show that the monsoon aspects are entirely determined by the location of the TP. Interestingly, the strongest EASM precipitation occurs when the TP is situated near its current location, a situation in which downstream southerlies are well developed from the surface to aloft. However, southerlies into the EASM region weaken as the TP moves, which in turn reduces the precipitation. Nevertheless, as long as it moves in the east–west direction, the TP is likely to force the stationary waves that induce precipitation over the midlatitudes (not necessarily over East Asia). In contrast, moving the TP well north of its original location does not induce strong monsoon flows over the EASM region, resulting in the driest case. Meanwhile, although the southward movement of the TP triggers downstream southerlies to some extent, it does not lead to an increase in the precipitation. Overall, these results show that the location of the TP is crucial in determining the EASM precipitation, and the latter is much more sensitive to the displacement of the TP in the meridional direction than in the zonal direction.

Initial angiogenesis within the first 3 days is critical for healing ischemic diseases such as myocardial infarction. Recently, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) has been ...reported to provide tissue-derived ECM components and can be used as a scaffold for cell delivery for angiogenesis in tissue engineering. Decellularization by various detergents such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and triton X-100 can remove the cell nuclei in tissue organs. However, this leads to ECM structure denaturation, decreased presence of various ECM proteins and cytokines, and loss of mechanical properties. To overcome these limitations, in this study, we developed a supercritical carbon dioxide and ethanol co-solvent (scCO2-EtOH) decellularization method, which is a detergent-free system that prevents ECM structure disruption and retains various angiogenic proteins in the heart dECM, and tested on rat heart tissues. The heart tissue was placed into the scCO2 reactor and decellularized at 37 °C and 350 bar. After scCO2-EtOH treatment, the effects were evaluated by DNA, collagen, and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) quantification and hematoxylin and eosin and immunofluorescence staining to determine the absence of nucleic acids and preservation of heart ECM components. Similar to the native group, the scCO2-EtOH group contained more ECM components such as collagen, GAGs, collagen I, laminin, and fibronectin and angiogenic factors including vascular endothelial growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, and platelet-derived growth factor and others in comparison to the detergent group. In addition, to estimate angiogenesis of the dECM hydrogels, the neutralized dECM solution was injected in a rat subcutaneous layer (n = 6 in each group: collagen, scCO2-EOH, and detergent group), after which the solution naturally formed gelation in the subcutaneous layer. After 3 days, the gels were harvested and estimated by immunofluorescence staining and the ImageJ program for angiogenesis analysis. Consequently, blood vessel formation and density of vWF and α-SMA in the scCO2-EtOH group were significantly greater than that in the collagen group. Here we suggest that heart-derived decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) with scCO2-EtOH treatment is a highly promising angiogenic material for healing in ischemic disease.
Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) in a supercritical phase has low viscosity and high diffusivity between gas and liquid properties and is known to be affordable, non-toxic, and eco-friendly. Therefore, scCO2 extraction technology has been extensively used in commercial and industrial fields. Recently, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) was applied to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine as a scaffold, therapeutic material, and bio-ink for 3D printing. Moreover, the general decellularization method using detergents has limitations including eliminating tissue-derived ECM components and disrupting their structures after decellularization. To overcome these limitations, heart tissues were treated with scCO2-EtOH for decellularization, resulting in preserving of tissue due to the various ECM and angiogenic factors derived. In addition, initiation of angiogenesis was highly induced even after 3 days of injection.
Various low-volume bowel cleansing formulations that improve compliance have been approved and are being used in clinical practice. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of 1 L polyethylene ...glycol (PEG) with ascorbic acid with that of sodium picosulfate (PICO) with magnesium citrate. This was a multicenter, randomized controlled, non-inferiority study. Patients were randomized into a 1 L PEG with ascorbic acid group and a PICO with magnesium citrate group according to the bowel cleansing agent used. Colonoscopy was performed as a single-blind study wherein the endoscopist had no information about any bowel preparation agent. The efficacy of bowel cleansing was assessed using the Harefield Cleansing Scale (HCS), and adverse events, preferences, and satisfaction were evaluated using a patient-reported questionnaire before colonoscopy. A total of 254 participants were randomly assigned to two groups: 115 in the 1 L PEG with ascorbic acid group and 113 in the PICO with magnesium citrate group. Overall bowel cleansing success was not statistically different between the two groups (97.4 vs. 97.3%), confirming that 1 L PEG with ascorbic acid was not inferior to PICO with magnesium citrate (lower confidence limit, -4.15%; p = 1.00). High-quality bowel cleansing was achieved in 87% of the 1 L PEG with ascorbic acid group and 77% of the PICO with magnesium citrate group (Lower confidence limit, 1.29%, p = 0.05). In terms of patient satisfaction, PICO with magnesium citrate was better, but compliance and side effects were similar in both groups. The 1 L PEG with ascorbic acid showed similar efficacy and adverse events as PICO with magnesium citrate. Although 1 L PEG with ascorbic acid is very effective in bowel preparation despite its small volume, it is necessary to increase satisfaction such as taste and feeling.

Abstract
Utilization of carbon-neutral biomass became increasingly important due to a desperate need for carbon reduction in the issue of global warming in light of replacing petroleum-based ...materials. We used lignin, which was an abundant, low cost, and non-food based biomass, for the development of all biomass-based films and composites through reactive compatibilization with poly (lactic-acid) (PLA). Using a facile and practical route, the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups of lignin were acetylated to impose the compatibility with PLA. The solubility parameter of the pristine lignin at 26.3 (J/cm

was altered to 20.9 (J/cm

by acetylation allowing the good compatibility with PLA at 20.2 (J/cm

. The improved compatibility of lignin and PLA provided substantially decreased lignin domain size in composites (12.7 μm), which subsequently gave transparent and UV-protection films (visual transmittance at 76% and UV protection factor over 40). The tensile strength and elongation of the developed composite films were increased by 22% and 76%, respectively, and the biobased carbon content was confirmed as 96 ± 3%. The developed PLA/lignin composites provided 100% all-biomass contents and balanced optical and mechanical properties that could broaden its eco-friendly applications in various industries.
Obesity increases the risks of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, ultimately contributing to mortality. Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO) was established to improve the ...management of obesity through research and education; to that end, the Committee of Clinical Practice Guidelines of KSSO reviews systemic evidence using expert panels to develop clinical guidelines. The clinical practice guidelines for obesity were revised in 2018 using National Health Insurance Service Health checkup data from 2006 to 2015. Following these guidelines, we added a category, class III obesity, which includes individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥35 kg/m
. Agreeing with the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders, Asian Pacific Chapter consensus, we determined that bariatric surgery is indicated for Korean patients with BMI ≥35 kg/m
and for Korean patients with BMI ≥30 kg/m
who have comorbidities. The new guidelines focus on guiding clinicians and patients to manage obesity more effectively. Our recommendations and treatment algorithms can serve as a guide for the evaluation, prevention, and management of overweight and obesity.
Supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted attention as an important energy source for various applications owing to their high power outputs and outstanding energy densities. The electrochemical ...performance of an SC device is predominantly determined by electrode materials, and thus, the selection and synthesis of the materials are crucial. Metal oxides (MOs) and their composites are the most widely used pseudocapacitive SC electrode materials. The basic requirements for fabricating high-performance SC electrodes include synthesizing and/or chemically modifying unique conducting nanostructures, optimizing a heterostructure morphology, and generating large-surface-area electroactive sites, all of which predominantly rely on various techniques used for synthesizing MO materials and fabricating MO- and MO-composite-based SC electrodes. Therefore, an SC's background and critical aspects, the challenges associated with the predominant synthesis techniques (including hydrothermal and microwave-assisted syntheses and chemical-bath and atomic-layer depositions), and resulting electrode electrochemical performances should be summarized in a convenient, accessible report to accelerate the development of materials for industrial SC applications. Therefore, we reviewed the most pertinent studies on these synthesis techniques to provide insight into the most recent advances in synthesizing MOs and fabricating their composite-based SC electrodes as well as to propose research directions for developing MO-based electrodes for applications to next-generation SCs.
Crosstalk between liver and skeletal muscle is vital for glucose homeostasis. Hepatokines, liver-derived proteins that play an important role in regulating muscle metabolism, are important to this ...communication. Here we identify apolipoprotein J (ApoJ) as a novel hepatokine targeting muscle glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity through a low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-2 (LRP2)-dependent mechanism, coupled with the insulin receptor (IR) signaling cascade. In muscle, LRP2 is necessary for insulin-dependent IR internalization, an initial trigger for insulin signaling, that is crucial in regulating downstream signaling and glucose uptake. Of physiologic significance, deletion of hepatic ApoJ or muscle LRP2 causes insulin resistance and glucose intolerance. In patients with polycystic ovary syndrome and insulin resistance, pioglitazone-induced improvement of insulin action is associated with an increase in muscle ApoJ and LRP2 expression. Thus, the ApoJ-LRP2 axis is a novel endocrine circuit that is central to the maintenance of normal glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity.
The purpose of this study was to develop a microcapsule-type self-healing coating system that could self-heal cracks and then maintain the healed state even upon crack expansion. Mixtures consisting ...of a photoinitiator and two methacrylate components, bismethacryloxypropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (BMT-PDMS) and monomethacryloxypropyl-terminated PDMS (MMT-PDMS), were transformed into viscoelastic semi-solids through photoreaction. The viscoelasticity of the reacted mixtures could be controlled by varying the mass ratio of the two methacrylates. Through a stretchability test, the optimal composition mixture was chosen as a healing agent. Microcapsules loaded with the healing agent were prepared and dispersed in a commercial undercoating to obtain a self-healing coating formulation. The formulation was applied onto mortar specimens, and then cracks were generated in the coating by using a universal testing machine (UTM). Cracks with around a 150-μm mean width were generated and were allowed to self-heal under UV light. Then, the cracks were expanded up to 650 μm in width. By conducting a water sorptivity test at each expanded crack width, the self-healing efficiency and capability of maintaining the healed state were evaluated. The B-M-1.5-1-based coating showed a healing efficiency of 90% at a 150-μm crack width and maintained its healing efficiency (about 80%) up to a 350-μm crack width. This self-healing coating system is promising for the protection of structural materials that can undergo crack formation and expansion.
