Natural killer (NK) cell lymphomas/leukemias are rare neoplasms with an aggressive clinical behavior. The majority of the cases belong to extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL) in the ...current WHO classification scheme. Gene-expression profiling (GEP) of 21 ENKTL and NK-cell lymphoma/leukemia patients, 17 NK- and T-cell lines and 5 indolent NK-cell large-granular-lymphocytic proliferation was performed and compared with 125 peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) patients previously studied. The molecular classifier derived for ENKTL patients was comprised of 84 transcripts with the majority of them contributed by the neoplastic NK cells. The classifier also identified a set of gamma delta -PTCLs both in the ENKTL cases as well as in cases initially classified as PTCL-not otherwise specified. These gamma delta -PTCLs expressed transcripts associated with the T-cell receptor (TCR)/CD3 complex, suggesting T cell rather than NK-cell lineage. They were very similar to NK-cell tumors by GEP, but were distinct from cytotoxic ( alpha beta )-PTCL and hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, indicating derivation from an ontogenically and functionally distinct subset of gamma delta T cells. They showed distinct expression of V gamma 9, V delta 2 transcripts and were positive for TCR gamma , but negative for TCR beta by immunohistochemistry. Targeted inhibition of two oncogenic pathways (AURKA and NOTCH-1) by small-molecular inhibitors induced significant growth arrest in NK-cell lines, thus providing a rationale for clinical trials of these inhibitors in NK-cell malignancies.

The objective of the study is to evaluate the pattern and predictors of medical care received by hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers during pregnancy and after delivery in Hong Kong.

Pregnant HBV carriers and their infants were followed up for 9–12 months after delivery. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to investigate what medical care they received for HBV before, during and after pregnancy.
Data were available for 412 HBV carriers. A total of 375 (91.0%) women were known HBV carriers before pregnancy. Routine antenatal screening picked out the remaining 37 (9.0%) HBV carriers; these women were younger, more likely to be smokers and had a lower level of education (P < 0.05) than known HBV carriers. In total, 356 of 412 (86.4%) HBV carriers did not receive any medical care for HBV during pregnancy. Known HBV carrier status, history of medical check-up and the use of antiviral treatment before pregnancy were significant predictors for HBV medical care during pregnancy (P < 0.05). The results show that 217 of 412 (52.6%) HBV carriers did not receive medical care for HBV after delivery. HBV medical care before pregnancy, use of antiviral treatment before pregnancy and a higher level of education were significant predictors for postpartum HBV medical care (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that HBV medical care before pregnancy (odds ratio OR, 7.73; 95% confidence interval CI, 3.21–18.65; P < 0.001) and the use of antiviral treatment (OR, 5.02; 95% CI, 1.41–17.81; P = 0.013) were associated with medical care during pregnancy. Medical care before pregnancy was also associated with postpartum HBV medical care (OR, 5.05; 95% CI, 3.29–7.51; P < 0.001).
A significant proportion of HBV carriers did not receive HBV-related medical check-ups during and after pregnancy in Hong Kong despite the majority being aware of their carrier status. Medical care before pregnancy predicted antenatal and postpartum HBV medical care.

Synchrotron-radiation based Mössbauer spectroscopy has become a useful technique capable for investigating various Mössbauer isotopes. For a typical experimental setup, the information ...associated with the pulse height (that is, energy) in an avalanche photodiode (APD) detector has not been used effectively. By using a system for simultaneous measurement system of time and energy associated with the APD signal, a system for the time- and energy-resolved Mössbauer spectroscopy has been developed. In this system, the pulse height information was converted to the time information through an amplitude-to-time converter applied to one of the divided signals from the APD. The corresponding time information was processed separately from another one of the divided signals. Both signals are recorded by a multi-channel scaler in an event-by-event data acquisition process. The velocity information from the Mössbauer transducer was also recorded as a tag for each signal event. Thus, the Mössbauer spectra with any time- and energy-window can be reconstructed after the data collection process. This system can be used for many purposes in time- and energy-resolved Mössbauer spectroscopy, and shows significant promise for use with other fast detectors and for various types of experiments.

Cells were collected by vigorous pipetting and analyzed by flow cytometry (Fortessa) for surface CD33 expression (anti-CD33 PE, BD Biosciences) and intracellular iNOS expression (rabbit monoclonal ...anti-human iNOS) (abcam), followed by goat anti-rabbit IgG (Alexa Fluor 488)(abcam). Incubation for 18 hrs with CYT+D3 significantly increased CD33+iNOS+ monocytes in PBMC from IgE+ adults (27.5 vs 15.65%; p<0.016), but not iNOS expression in PBMC from IgE- subjects (6.5 vs 8.7%; p>0.05) (Mann-Whitney U-test) Conclusions Measurement of intracellular iNOS by flow cytometry in CD33+ monocytes detects increased expression in the presence of cytokines and vitamin D3 in IgE+ adults.
