Preeclampsia (PE) is a multifactorial disorder. Several studies showed that micro RNAs may play a critical role in PE pathogenesis. We aimed to investigate for the first time the association of ...mir-155rs767649 polymorphism with PE. Eighty patients with preeclampsia and 80 normal subjects were enrolled in the study. Serum expression levels of mature mir-155were evaluated using real-time PCR, and mir-155 rs767649 (T/A) polymorphism was genotyped using TaqMan SNP genotyping. There was a significant difference between the expression level of mir-155 in cases (5.86 ± 3.11) in comparison with controls (0.58 ± 0.30) (P<0.0001). Also,the minor allele of rs767649 was significantly associated with increased risk of PE Recessive model: adjusted Odds ratio (OR) = 5.240, 95% confidence interval (CI) = (1.999-13.733),P= 0.001. There was a significant difference between different genotypes according to expression levels of mir-155 in PE (P<0.0001) with high expression levels in TA genotype (7.10 ± 3.11 ). Mir-155 may play a critical role in PE pathogenesis. The obtained data suggest that a minor allele of rs767649 might be a predisposing factor for PE.
Background The suburban transmission of malaria in Selangor, Malaysia's most developed and populous state still remains a concern for public health in this region. Despite much successful control ...efforts directed at its reduction, sporadic cases, mostly brought in by foreigners have continued to occur. In addition, cases of simian malaria caused by Plasmodium knowlesi, some with fatal outcome have caused grave concern to health workers. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of local malaria transmission in suburban regions of Selangor, which are adjacent to secondary rainforests. Findings A malaria survey spanning 7 years (2006 - 2012) was conducted in Selangor. A total of 1623 laboratory confirmed malaria cases were reported from Selangor's nine districts. While 72.6% of these cases (1178/1623) were attributed to imported malaria (cases originating from other countries), 25.5% (414/1623) were local cases and 1.9% (31/1623) were considered as relapse and unclassified cases combined. In this study, the most prevalent infection was P. vivax (1239 cases, prevalence 76.3%) followed by P. falciparum (211, 13.0%), P. knowlesi (75, 4.6%), P. malariae (71, 4.4%) and P. ovale (1, 0.06%). Mixed infections comprising of P. vivax and P. falciparum were confirmed (26, 1.6%). Entomological surveys targeting the residences of malaria patients' showed that the most commonly trapped Anopheles species was An. maculatus. No oocysts or sporozoites were found in the An. maculatus collected. Nevertheless, the possibility of An. maculatus being the malaria vector in the investigated locations was high due to its persistent occurrence in these areas. Conclusions Malaria cases reported in this study were mostly imported cases. However the co-existence of local cases and potential Plasmodium spp. vectors should be cause for concern. The results of this survey reflect the need of maintaining closely monitored malaria control programs and continuous extensive malaria surveillance in Peninsula Malaysia.

Aim: This study was conducted to illustrate the errors in handling patient’s specimen all the way from patients to laboratory. Material and method: Outpatient staff, patients, and laboratory staff ...asked to answer questions in three separated questionnaire forms during the period between February-April 2016. One hundred and thirty-eight individuals asked to answer questions in three separated questionnaire forms, 34(24.64%) outpatient staff, 53(38.41%) patients and 51(36.96%) laboratory staff in different hospitals in Basrah. Among the patient group, 25 (47.17%) males and 28 (52.83%) were females. SPSS version 20 used for analysis the data. Results: Among the outpatient staff, 61.76% do not invert the tube to mix blood specimen with anticoagulant, 58.82% do not check expiration date on the tube before usage. Also 41.18% do not explain to the patient how to collect the specimen. Among patient group, 12% males and 21.43% females wash the urinary opening and the surrounding areas before collecting urine specimen. Percentage of females who give the specimen immediately to outpatient staff (46.43%) was statistically significant in comparison to men (P-value was 0.04).
The structural, magnetic, and optical properties of the pristine and Gd-doped ZnO nanorods (NRs), prepared by facile thermal decomposition, have been studied using a combination of experimental and ...density functional theory (DFT) with Hubbard U correction approaches. The XRD patterns demonstrate the single-phase wurtzite structure of the pristine and doped ZnO. The rod-like shape of the nanoparticles has been examined by FESEM and TEM techniques. Elemental compositions of the pure and doped samples were identified by EDX measurement. Due to the Burstein-Moss shift, the optical band gaps of the doped samples have been widened compared to pristine ZnO. The PL spectra show the presence of complex defects. Room temperature magnetic properties have been measured using VSM and revealed the coexistence of paramagnetic and weak ferromagnetic ordering in Gd
3+
doped ZnO-NRs. The magnetic moment was increased upon addition of more Gd ions into the ZnO host lattice. The DFT+U calculations confirm that the presence of vacancy-complexes has a significant effect on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a pristine ZnO system.

Globally, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second most common cause of cancer-related death due to a lack of early predictive and/or diagnostic tools. Thus, research for a new biomarker is ...important. LncRNAs play a functional role in target gene regulation and their deregulation is associated with several pathological conditions including HCC.
This study aimed to explore the diagnostic potential of two LncRNAs MALAT1 and CASC2 in HCC compared to the routinely used diagnostic biomarker.
The current study is a case-control study carried out at Fayoum University Hospital and conducted on 89 individuals. The study included three groups of 36 HCC patients on top of HCV(HCC/HCV), 33 HCV patients, and 20 healthy volunteers as a control group. All study subjects were subjected to radiological examinations. The determination of CBC was performed by the automated counter and liver function tests by the enzymatic method were performed. In addition, HCV RNA quantification and the expression level of two LncRNAs (MALAT1 and CASC2) were performed by qRT-PCR.
The results revealed a statistically significant difference between study groups regarding liver function tests with a higher mean in HCC/HCV group. Also, serum MALAT1 significantly up-regulated in HCV (11.2±2.8) and HCC/HCV (4.56±1.4) compared to the control group. Besides, serum CASC2 levels in the HCV group were significantly upregulated (14.9±3.6), while, downregulated in the HCC group (0.16± 0.03). Furthermore, The ROC analysis for diagnostic efficacy parameters indicated that CASC2 has higher accuracy (94.6%) and sensitivity (97.2%) for HCC diagnosis than AFP with an accuracy of (90.9%), sensitivity (69.4%), and MALAT1 showed an accuracy of (56.9%), sensitivity (72.2%).
Our study results indicated that CASC2 is a promising biomarker and is considered better and could help in HCC diagnosis on top of HCV than MALAT1 and the routine biomarker AFP.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly spread globally, forcing countries to apply lockdowns and strict social distancing measures. The aim of this study was to assess eating habits and ...lifestyle behaviours among residents of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region during the lockdown. A cross-sectional study among adult residents of the MENA region was conducted using an online questionnaire designed on Google Forms during April 2020. A total of 2970 participants from eighteen countries participated in the present study. During the pandemic, over 30 % reported weight gain, 6·2 % consumed five or more meals per d compared with 2·2 % before the pandemic (P < 0·001) and 48·8 % did not consume fruits on a daily basis. Moreover, 39·1 % did not engage in physical activity, and over 35 % spent more than 5 h/d on screens. A significant association between the frequency of training during the pandemic and the reported change in weight was found (P < 0·001). A significantly higher percentage of participants reported physical and emotional exhaustion, irritability and tension either all the time or a large part of the time during the pandemic (P < 0·001). Although a high percentage of participants reported sleeping more hours per night during the pandemic, 63 % had sleep disturbances. The study highlights that the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a variety of lifestyle changes, physical inactivity and psychological problems among adults in the MENA region.
