Various AI functionalities such as pattern recognition and prediction can effectively be used to diagnose (recognize) and predict coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections and propose timely response (remedial action) to minimize the spread and impact of the virus. Motivated by this, an AI system based on deep meta learning has been proposed in this research to accelerate analysis of chest X-ray (CXR) images in automatic detection of COVID-19 cases. We present a synergistic approach to integrate contrastive learning with a fine-tuned pre-trained ConvNet encoder to capture unbiased feature representations and leverage a Siamese network for final classification of COVID-19 cases. We validate the effectiveness of our proposed model using two publicly available datasets comprising images from normal, COVID-19 and other pneumonia infected categories. Our model achieves 95.6% accuracy and AUC of 0.97 in diagnosing COVID-19 from CXR images even with a limited number of training samples.
The promising potential of the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for interconnected medical devices and sensors has played an important role in the next-generation healthcare industry ...for quality patient care. Because of the increasing number of elderly and disabled people, there is an urgent need for a real-time health monitoring infrastructure for analyzing patients’ healthcare data to avoid preventable deaths. Healthcare Industrial IoT (HealthIIoT) has significant potential for the realization of such monitoring. HealthIIoT is a combination of communication technologies, interconnected apps, Things (devices and sensors), and people that would function together as one smart system to monitor, track, and store patients’ healthcare information for ongoing care. This paper presents a HealthIIoT-enabled monitoring framework, where ECG and other healthcare data are collected by mobile devices and sensors and securely sent to the cloud for seamless access by healthcare professionals. Signal enhancement, watermarking, and other related analytics will be used to avoid identity theft or clinical error by healthcare professionals. The suitability of this approach has been validated through both experimental evaluation, and simulation by deploying an IoT-driven ECG-based health monitoring service in the cloud.
Fruit classification is an important task in many industrial applications. A fruit classification system may be used to help a supermarket cashier identify the fruit species and prices. It may also ...be used to help people decide whether specific fruit species meet their dietary requirements. In this paper, we propose an efficient framework for fruit classification using deep learning. More specifically, the framework is based on two different deep learning architectures. The first is a proposed light model of six convolutional neural network layers, whereas the second is a fine-tuned visual geometry group-16 pretrained deep learning model. Two color image datasets, one of which is publicly available, are used to evaluate the proposed framework. The first dataset (dataset 1) consists of clear fruit images, whereas the second dataset (dataset 2) contains fruit images that are challenging to classify. Classification accuracies of 99.49% and 99.75% were achieved on dataset 1 for the first and second models, respectively. On dataset 2, the first and second models obtained accuracies of 85.43% and 96.75%, respectively.
The potential of cloud-supported cyber-physical systems (CCPSs) has drawn a great deal of interest from academia and industry. CCPSs facilitate the seamless integration of devices in the physical ...world (e.g., sensors, cameras, microphones, speakers, and GPS devices) with cyberspace. This enables a range of emerging applications or systems such as patient or health monitoring, which require patient locations to be tracked. These systems integrate a large number of physical devices such as sensors with localization technologies (e.g., GPS and wireless local area networks) to generate, sense, analyze, and share huge quantities of medical and user-location data for complex processing. However, there are a number of challenges regarding these systems in terms of the positioning of patients, ubiquitous access, large-scale computation, and communication. Hence, there is a need for an infrastructure or system that can provide scalability and ubiquity in terms of huge real-time data processing and communications in the cyber or cloud space. To this end, this paper proposes a cloud-supported cyber-physical localization system for patient monitoring using smartphones to acquire voice and electroencephalogram signals in a scalable, real-time, and efficient manner. The proposed approach uses Gaussian mixture modeling for localization and is shown to outperform other similar methods in terms of error estimation.
With the increasing demand for automated, remote, intelligent, and real-time healthcare services in smart cities, smart healthcare monitoring is necessary to provide improved and complete care to ...residents. In this monitoring, health-related media or signals collected from smart-devices/objects are transmitted and processed to cater to the need for quality care. However, it is challenging to create a framework or method to handle media-related healthcare data analytics or signals (e.g., voice/audio, video, or electroglottographic (EGG) signals) to meet the complex on-demand healthcare needs for successful smart city management. To this end, this paper proposes a cloud-oriented smart healthcare monitoring framework that interacts with surrounding smart devices, environments, and smart city stakeholders for affordable and accessible healthcare. As a smart city healthcare monitoring case study, a voice pathology detection (VPD) method is proposed. In the proposed method, two types of input, a voice signal and an EGG signal, are used. The input devices are connected to the Internet and the captured signals are transmitted to the cloud. The signals are then processed and classified as either normal or pathologic with a confidence score. These results are passed to registered doctors that make the final decision and take appropriate action. To process the signals, local features are extracted from the first-order derivative of the voice signal, and shape and cepstral features are extracted from the EGG signal. For classification, a Gaussian mixture model-based approach is used. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve VPD that is more than 93% accurate.

COVID-19 or related viral pandemics should be detected and managed without hesitation, since the virus spreads very rapidly. Often with insufficient human and electronic resources, patients need to be checked from stable patients using vital signs, radiographic photographs, or ultrasound images. Vital signs do not often offer the right outcome, and radiographic photos have a variety of other problems. Lung ultrasound (LUS) images can provide good screening without a lot of complications. This paper suggests a model of a convolutionary neural network (CNN) that has fewer learning parameters but can achieve strong accuracy. The model has five main blocks or layers of convolution connectors. A multi-layer fusion functionality of each block is proposed to improve the efficiency of the COVID-19 screening method utilizing the proposed model. Experiments are conducted using freely accessible LUS photographs and video datasets. The proposed fusion method has 92.5% precision, 91.8% accuracy, and 93.2% retrieval using the data collection. These efficiency metric levels are considerably higher than those used in any of the state-of-the-art CNN versions.

Recent technological advancements in data acquisition tools allowed life scientists to acquire multimodal data from different biological application domains. Categorized in three broad types (i.e. ...images, signals, and sequences), these data are huge in amount and complex in nature. Mining such enormous amount of data for pattern recognition is a big challenge and requires sophisticated data-intensive machine learning techniques. Artificial neural network-based learning systems are well known for their pattern recognition capabilities, and lately their deep architectures—known as deep learning (DL)—have been successfully applied to solve many complex pattern recognition problems. To investigate how DL—especially its different architectures—has contributed and been utilized in the mining of biological data pertaining to those three types, a meta-analysis has been performed and the resulting resources have been critically analysed. Focusing on the use of DL to analyse patterns in data from diverse biological domains, this work investigates different DL architectures’ applications to these data. This is followed by an exploration of available open access data sources pertaining to the three data types along with popular open-source DL tools applicable to these data. Also, comparative investigations of these tools from qualitative, quantitative, and benchmarking perspectives are provided. Finally, some open research challenges in using DL to mine biological data are outlined and a number of possible future perspectives are put forward.
Recent advancements in the Internet of Health Things (IoHT) have ushered in the wide adoption of IoT devices in our daily health management. For IoHT data to be acceptable by stakeholders, ...applications that incorporate the IoHT must have a provision for data provenance, in addition to the accuracy, security, integrity, and quality of data. To protect the privacy and security of IoHT data, federated learning (FL) and differential privacy (DP) have been proposed, where private IoHT data can be trained at the owner's premises. Recent advancements in hardware GPUs even allow the FL process within smartphone or edge devices having the IoHT attached to their edge nodes. Although some of the privacy concerns of IoHT data are addressed by FL, fully decentralized FL is still a challenge due to the lack of training capability at all federated nodes, the scarcity of high-quality training datasets, the provenance of training data, and the authentication required for each FL node. In this paper, we present a lightweight hybrid FL framework in which blockchain smart contracts manage the edge training plan, trust management, and authentication of participating federated nodes, the distribution of global or locally trained models, the reputation of edge nodes and their uploaded datasets or models. The framework also supports the full encryption of a dataset, the model training, and the inferencing process. Each federated edge node performs additive encryption, while the blockchain uses multiplicative encryption to aggregate the updated model parameters. To support the full privacy and anonymization of the IoHT data, the framework supports lightweight DP. This framework was tested with several deep learning applications designed for clinical trials with COVID-19 patients. We present here the detailed design, implementation, and test results, which demonstrate strong potential for wider adoption of IoHT-based health management in a secure way.
With the advent of new technologies and the fast pace of human life, patients today require a sophisticated and advanced smart healthcare framework that is tailored to suit their individual health ...requirements. Along with 5G and state-of-the-art smart Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, edge computing provides intelligent, real-time healthcare solutions that satisfy energy consumption and latency criteria. Earlier surveys on smart healthcare systems were centered on cloud and fog computing architectures, security, and authentication, and the types of sensors and devices used in edge computing frameworks. They did not focus on the healthcare IoT applications deployed within edge computing architectures. The first purpose of this study is to analyze the existing and evolving edge computing architectures and techniques for smart healthcare and recognize the demands and challenges of different application scenarios. We examine edge intelligence that targets health data classification with the tracking and identification of vital signs using state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. This study also presents a comprehensive analysis of the use of cutting-edge artificial intelligence-based classification and prediction techniques employed for edge intelligence. Even with its many advantages, edge intelligence poses challenges related to computational complexity and security. To offer a higher quality of life to patients, potential research recommendations for improving edge computing services for healthcare are identified in this study. This study also offers a brief overview of the general usage of IoT solutions in edge platforms for medical treatment and healthcare.
Capturing psychological, emotional, and physiological states, especially during a pandemic, and leveraging the captured sensory data within the pandemic management ecosystem is challenging. Recent ...advancements for the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) have shown promising results from collecting diversified types of such emotional and physical health-related data from the home environment. State-of-the-art deep learning (DL) applications can run in a resource-constrained edge environment, which allows data from IoMT devices to be processed locally at the edge, and performs inferencing related to in-home health. This allows health data to remain in the vicinity of the user edge while ensuring the privacy, security, and low latency of the inferencing system. In this article, we develop an edge IoMT system that uses DL to detect diversified types of health-related COVID-19 symptoms and generates reports and alerts that can be used for medical decision support. Several COVID-19 applications have been developed, tested, and deployed to support clinical trials. We present the design of the framework, a description of our implemented system, and the accuracy results. The test results show the suitability of the system for in-home health management during a pandemic.
