Historically, stigma and help‐seeking intentions are largely seen as determinants on whether an individual uses professional counseling services. These constructs, however, have been understudied in ...African American men. Adopting a humanistic approach, this study revealed how the overarching constructs of stigma and help‐seeking intentions predicted whether African American men sought counseling. Logistic regression analyses of African American men (N = 119) confirmed stigma and help‐seeking intentions as predictors of counseling.
Gender differences are defined as biological differences between sexes; however, this review explores how perceived differences may be culturally reinforced gendered behavior that occur within ...supervision as opposed to actual biological differences among sexes. Additionally, literature supports that gender differences in supervision are minimal, reflecting more similarities between genders. In the present review, research on gender differences and clinical supervision are examined. Further, a brief overview of language theory is presented to explore how gender differences are defined in supervision and whether they actually exist.
Counselor educators are encouraged to intentionally find ways to foster education that is culturally relevant and anti-oppressive. Films are a vessel for which culturally responsive pedagogy can be ...enacted. This is especially true in the realm of intersectionality. The case for using the film Moonlight is presented to explore the interlocking systems of oppression that affect communities and persons of color every day, and how counselors can incorporate this particular film into counselor training.
The help‐seeking processes of college students can be impacted by aspects of public stigma, self‐stigma, and mental health literacy. The unique influences of these factors, however, have yet to be ...explored with African American male college students (AAMCS). Using a sample of 116 AAMCS, the researchers examined changes of variances in AAMCS’ help‐seeking intentions explained by public stigma, self‐stigma, mental health literacy, and self‐construal. Our hierarchical regression analyses revealed public stigma and self‐stigma to account for 13.7% (ΔR2 = 0.137) of variance in predicting help‐seeking intentions of AAMCS. Mental health literacy and self‐construal were not found to be statistically significant in their respective models. The overall hierarchical model accounted for 25.9% of variance in help‐seeking intentions of AAMCS. Implications for counseling practice and future research in help‐seeking are discussed.
The view of Black male identities has historically been distorted. Traditionally, it has reflected the dehumanization of Black males through the lens of criminality and lacking dignity. However, in a ...similar fashion, little is known about the Black males in counseling, due to simultaneous under examination in empirical literature. Therefore, the researchers conducted a content analysis on the family of American Counseling Association and affiliate journals to observe the current state of scholarship on Black males’ experiences with counseling. Using an intersectional lens to the approach, our review yielded 102 articles on Black males' experiences with counseling published between 1972 and 2022. Implications for culturally responsive practices and counselor education are further discussed.
Suspension training reportedly enhances core musculature co-contraction. This study investigated whether the use of a suspension trainer increases core musculature co-activation during exercises vs. ...its floor counterpart. Participants were 25 healthy volunteers (16 men, 9 women; age: 27.24 ± 4.02 years). Wireless electromyography electrodes were placed bilaterally at the rectus abdominis (RA), erector spinae (ES), and abdominal obliques (OB). Test order (push-up, bridge, and prone plank) was randomized (exercise and condition) with a 3-min rest period between tests. Co-contraction ratios between muscle groups were estimated by root mean square. Ratios (RA/ES, RA/OB, ES/OB) were analyzed using paired t-tests (P ≤ .05). For all floor exercises, co-contraction of core musculature was significantly higher than suspension trainer. During suspension training, perturbations due to increased agonist activation without similar increases in antagonists may be too intense for untrained or injured individuals. Individuals lacking muscle control to recruit muscles concurrently may benefit from mastering traditional floor exercises to promote joint stiffness and stability before suspension trainer exercises.
•Suspension training (ST) reportedly enhances core musculature co-contraction.•Co-contraction of core musculature was higher in floor exercises vs. suspension trainer.•ST Perturbations may be too intense for untrained or injured persons.•Individuals lacking muscle control should master floor exercises prior to ST exercises.
This study explored the experiences of counselor students of color in two multicultural courses in a master-level counseling program. Participants revealed their feelings surrounding a need to assume ...a 'teaching role' with their White counterparts, to challenge racist and stereotypical viewpoints. Positive and negative experiences associated with this role were expressed. Findings are drawn upon to suggest more inclusive counselor education tactics.
Group co-leadership requires facilitators to effectively work together to produce positive group outcomes; however, there is a paucity of information about how the co-leadership relationship ...develops. In this modified consensual qualitative research study, we explore the development of the group co-leadership relationship in doctoral-level trainees. Five doctoral student co-leaders facilitating experiential learning groups completed reflection journals on their leadership experiences. Findings revealed five relational dynamic themes experienced amongst co-leaders in leading an experiential training group. The primary implications from these findings can assist counselor educators in the training of group leaders.
Although the viral nature of videos that capture violent and racialized policing of Black Americans in the United States can increase awareness, exposure to race-based violence can result in ...vicarious traumatization, particularly among Black Americans. The relationship between anticipatory traumatic reactions (ATRs) and racial identity attitudes is not clearly addressed in the extant body of literature. The current study addresses this research disparity by first analyzing group mean differences among Black Americans (N = 138) who were assigned to audiovisual, written, and imaginal exposure groups. The current study also used a cluster analysis of Black Americans to examine the differences between racial identity attitudes and ATRs following media exposure to undue police violence. Results from the study indicated that no differences in ATRs existed based on types of media exposure. Significant differences across three racial identity clusters existed between ATR in association with attitudes of assimilation, miseducation, self-hatred, anti-dominance, and ethnic-racial salience. Findings from the study suggest that mental health professionals should attend to racial identity attitudes as a relevant factor in how Black American clients experience the psychological impact of media exposure to undue police violence.
