Since 1908, scholars have been fascinated by the possibility that the name Socration in Catullus' poem 47 might be a pseudonym for the Greek poet and Epicurean philosopher, Philodemus. This article ...first traces the history of the identification of Socration with Philodemus, placing it within the context of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Catullan scholarship; the context of theCatullromanhelps to explain why the identification became so popular. The article then reviews the arguments that have been used to uphold the identification, concluding that there is no credible evidence to support it.
Review of recent evidence with translation to practice for the role of advanced practice registered nurses is presented using a case study module for the following: "What is known about Outcomes of ...Patients with Low Back Pain? The study results showed that patients with low back pain may have substantial continuing pain and functional limitations. The implications and clinical relevance of these findings for advanced practice nurses are discussed highlighting best evidence.

In the research study “Corticosteroid Timing and Length of Stay for Children With Asthma in the Emergency Department,” the authors conducted a retrospective medical record review of children with ...emergency department (ED) visits to a Connecticut Medical Center in 2007. Their aim was to determine whether administration of oral corticosteroids to patients with acute asthma exacerbation would decrease the mean length of stay in the ED by 10 min or more. We review and critique this article and use a case study module to illustrate the importance of these research findings and also the larger body of evidence supporting the early administration of corticosteroids in acute asthma.
The privileging of the substituted judgment standard as the gold standard for surrogate decision making in law and bioethics has constrained the research agenda in end-of-life decision making. The ...empirical literature is inundated with a plethora of "Newlywed Game" designs, in which potential patients and potential surrogates respond to hypothetical scenarios to see how often they "get it right." The preoccupation with determining the capacity of surrogates to accurately reproduce the judgments of another makes a number of assumptions that blind scholars to the variables central to understanding how surrogates actually make medical decisions on behalf of another. These assumptions include that patient preferences are knowable, surrogates have adequate and accurate information, time stands still, patients get the surrogates they want, patients want and surrogates utilize substituted judgment criteria, and surrogates are disinterested. This article examines these assumptions and considers the challenges of designing research that makes them problematic.

Patients with nonsurgical pain (NSP) after a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) report different patterns of pain interference than those without NSP.
This study explores the severity and ways in which ...NSP interferes with activities 48 hours and 6-7 weeks post surgery.
Univariate and multivariate analyses were used. The mean score for intensity at 48 hours was 1.78, and at 6-7 weeks it was 1.15. The mean score for interference with activities at 48 hours was 1.62 and at 6-7 weeks it was 0.91. Highest NSP pain interference at 48 hours was for "activity," "sleep," and "enjoyment of life." At 6-7 weeks, the highest scores were for "activity," "sleep," and "walking." No significant differences were noted for age, race, education, or gender.
Although rated "mild," this pain should be addressed. The NSP indicates a baseline of chronic and persistent pain, which is an opportunity to work with our patients to mitigate this pain. Total knee arthroplasty, a common and effective treatment for painful knee conditions attributed to various forms of arthritis, is known to be a painful surgical procedure. Two of the major concerns voiced by patients awaiting TKA are about postoperative pain management and rehabilitation efforts after the procedure (). Healthcare providers offer a range of methods and strategies to deal with postoperative TKA pain, yet to date no single method offers complete satisfaction (; ; ; ).
How do societies control trust relationships that are not embedded in structures of personal relations? This paper discusses the guardians of impersonal trust and discovers that, in the quest for ...agent fidelity, they create new problems. The resulting collection of procedural norms, structural constraints, entry restrictions, policing mechanisms, social-control specialists, and insurance-like arrangements increases the opportunities for abuse while it encourages less acceptable trustee performance. Moreover, this system sometimes leads people to throw good "money" after bad; they protect trust and respond to its failures by conferring even more trust. The paper explores the sources and consequences of the paradox that the guardians of trust are themselves trustees.
In part taking up Steven Achheim's call not to retrospectively essentialize the terms Deutschtum and Judentum but, rather, to think them in their "co-constitutionality," I argue that such re-reading ...points not only to the ways in which a "minority" culture helped shape a "majority" culture in the past, but forward to the claims of contemporary critical political and cultural theory as well. Instead of reading Moses Mendelssohn—the main focus of this essay—as an accommodator to German enlightenment mandates who simply traded Jewish autonomy for civil emancipation, therefore, I suggest re-reading his Liberal social contract theory in light of contemporary feminist and critical political thought in order to gain a better sense of its novelty and, even, radicality, as well as of how it may provide an alternative, if still imperfect, model of critically thinking together the terms "gender," "Jewishness," and "emancipation."
The development of effective and safe treatments has significantly increased the life expectancy of persons with haemophilia (PWH). This has been accompanied by an increase in the comorbidities of ...ageing including cardiovascular disease, which poses particular challenges due to the opposing risks of bleeding from haemophilia and antithrombotic treatments versus thrombosis. Although mortality secondary to coronary artery disease in PWH is less than in the general population, the rate of atherosclerosis appears similar. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in PWH and risk of secondary thromboembolic stroke are not well established. PWH can be safely supported through acute coronary interventions but data on the safety and efficacy of long‐term antithrombotics are scarce. Increased awareness and research on cardiovascular disease in PWH will be crucial to improve primary prevention, acute management, secondary prevention and to best support ageing PWH.
