Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the proton have been measured at scattering angles of 55°, 90°, and 125° in the laboratory frame using quasimonoenergetic linearly (circularly) ...polarized photon beams with a weighted mean energy value of 83.4 MeV (81.3 MeV). These measurements were performed at the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source facility at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. The results are compared to previous measurements and are interpreted in the chiral effective field theory framework to extract the electromagnetic dipole polarizabilities of the proton, which gives α_{E1}^{p}=13.8±1.2_{stat}±0.1_{BSR}±0.3_{theo},β_{M1}^{p}=0.2∓1.2_{stat}±0.1_{BSR}∓0.3_{theo} in units of 10^{-4} fm^{3}.
Self-rated health (SRH) is one of the most frequently used indicators in health and social research. Its robust association with mortality in very different populations implies that it is a ...comprehensive measure of health status and may even reflect the condition of the human organism beyond clinical diagnoses. Yet the biological basis of SRH is poorly understood. We used data from three independent European population samples (N approx. 15,000) to investigate the associations of SRH with 150 biomolecules in blood or urine (biomarkers). Altogether 57 biomarkers representing different organ systems were associated with SRH. In almost half of the cases the association was independent of disease and physical functioning. Biomarkers weakened but did not remove the association between SRH and mortality. We propose three potential pathways through which biomarkers may be incorporated into an individual's subjective health assessment, including (1) their role in clinical diseases; (2) their association with health-related lifestyles; and (3) their potential to stimulate physical sensations through interoceptive mechanisms. Our findings indicate that SRH has a solid biological basis and it is a valid but non-specific indicator of the biological condition of the human organism.
The rootâknot nematode, Meloidogyne graminicola, is an important pest of rice in many rice production areas worldwide. The endophyte Fusarium moniliforme strain Fe14, isolated from a disinfected ...root of rice, has previously shown potential antagonistic activity against M. graminicola. This study shows the effects of Fe14 on M. graminicola behaviour, infection, development and reproduction. The endophyte Fe14 colonisation significantly reduced M. graminicola penetration into rice roots by 55% and increased the male to female ratio nine times. The endophyte also delayed juvenile development into female inside the rice root. These results suggest a suboptimal performance of the giant cell and a cumulative effect of the endophyte on the longâterm rootâknot nematode population development. In splitâroot assays, the application of Fe14 at the inducer side significantly reduced nematode invasion at the responder side by 38% and 60% in two independent trials. This result suggests a systemic effect of the endophyte on rice plants. The root exudates from Fe14âtreated plants were either less attractive or had repellent effect on nematode movement. The results, when compared to what was described for other endophytic Fusarium against other nematode species, may indicate a basal response mechanism initiated in the plant by endophytic Fusarium spp. The present study may give leads for unravelling the molecular mechanisms responsible for the induced systemic defence responses in plants.
Background Unintentional poisoning deaths have been increasing dramatically over the past decade, and the majority of this increase has resulted from overdoses of specific prescription drugs. Despite ...this trend, there are limited existing data examining hospitalizations for poisonings, both unintentional and intentional, associated with prescription drugs. A better understanding of these hospitalizations may help identify high-risk populations in need of intervention to prevent subsequent mortality. Purpose This article aims to describe the incidence and characteristics of hospitalizations resulting from poisoning by prescription opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers in the U.S. from 1999 to 2006 and make comparisons to hospitalizations for all other poisonings during this time period. Methods Hospitalizations for poisonings were selected from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), a stratified, representative sample of approximately 8 million hospitalizations each year, according to the principal discharge diagnosis. Intentionality of the poisoning was determined by external cause of injury codes. SAS callable SUDAAN software was used to calculate weighted estimates of poisoning hospitalizations by type and intentionality. Demographic and clinical characteristics of poisoning cohorts were compared. Data were analyzed in 2009. Results From 1999 to 2006, U.S. hospitalizations for poisoning by prescription opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers increased a total of 65%. This increase was double the increase observed in hospitalizations for poisoning by other drugs and substances. The largest increase in the number of hospitalized cases over the 7-year period was seen for poisonings by benzodiazepines, whereas the largest percentage increase was observed for methadone (400%). In comparison to patients hospitalized for poisoning from other substances, those hospitalized for prescription opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers were more likely to be women, aged >34 years, and to present to a rural or urban nonteaching hospital. Conclusions Prescription opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers are an increasing cause of hospitalization. The hospital admission provides an opportunity to better understand the contextual factors contributing to these cases, which may aid in the development of targeted prevention strategies.
Nonmonotonic variation with collision energy (sqrts_{NN}) of the moments of the net-baryon number distribution in heavy-ion collisions, related to the correlation length and the susceptibilities of ...the system, is suggested as a signature for the quantum chromodynamics critical point. We report the first evidence of a nonmonotonic variation in the kurtosis times variance of the net-proton number (proxy for net-baryon number) distribution as a function of sqrts_{NN} with 3.1 σ significance for head-on (central) gold-on-gold (Au+Au) collisions measured solenoidal tracker at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Data in noncentral Au+Au collisions and models of heavy-ion collisions without a critical point show a monotonic variation as a function of sqrts_{NN}.
The influence of hyperpolarization-activated cation current (h-current; Ih) upon synaptic integration in paravertebral sympathetic neurons was studied together with expression of ...hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) subunit isoforms. All four HCN subunits were detected in homogenates of the rat superior cervical ganglion (SCG) using the PCR to amplify reverse-transcribed messenger RNAs (RT-PCR) and using quantitative PCR. Voltage clamp recordings from dissociated SCG neurons at 35°C detected Ih in all cells, with a maximum hyperpolarization-activated cation conductance of 1.2 ± 0.1 nS, half-maximal activation at -87.6 mV, and reversal potential of -31.6 mV. Interaction between Ih and synaptic potentials was tested with virtual fast nicotinic excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) created with dynamic clamp. The blocking of Ih with 15 μM ZD7288 hyperpolarized cells by 4.7 mV and increased the virtual synaptic conductance required to stimulate an action potential from 7.0 ± 0.9 nS to 12.1 ± 0.9 nS. In response to stimulation with 40 s long trains of virtual EPSPs, ZD7288 reduced postsynaptic firing from 2.2 to 1.7 Hz and the associated synaptic amplification from 2.2 ± 0.1 to 1.7 ± 0.2. Cyclic nucleotide binding to HCN channels was simulated by blocking native Ih with ZD7288, followed by reconstitution with virtual Ih using a dynamic clamp model of the voltage clamp data. Over a 30-mV range, shifting the half-activation voltage for Ih in 10 mV depolarizing increments always increased synaptic gain. These results indicate that Ih, in sympathetic neurons, can strengthen nicotinic EPSPs and increase synaptic amplification, while also working as a substrate for cyclic nucleotide-dependent modulation.
Circulating cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) has emerged as a promising biomarker of ageing, tissue damage and cellular stress. However, less is known about health behaviours, ageing phenotypes and metabolic ...processes that lead to elevated cf-DNA levels. We sought to analyse the relationship of circulating cf-DNA level to age, sex, smoking, physical activity, vegetable consumption, ageing phenotypes (physical functioning, the number of diseases, frailty) and an extensive panel of biomarkers including blood and urine metabolites and inflammatory markers in three human cohorts (N = 5385; 17–82 years). The relationships were assessed using correlation statistics, and linear and penalised regressions (the Lasso), also stratified by sex.
cf-DNA levels were significantly higher in men than in women, and especially in middle-aged men and women who smoke, and in older more frail individuals. Correlation statistics of biomarker data showed that cf-DNA level was higher with elevated inflammation (C-reactive protein, interleukin-6), and higher levels of homocysteine, and proportion of red blood cells and lower levels of ascorbic acid. Inflammation (C-reactive protein, glycoprotein acetylation), amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine), and ketogenesis (3-hydroxybutyrate) were included in the cf-DNA level-related biomarker profiles in at least two of the cohorts.
In conclusion, circulating cf-DNA level is different by sex, and related to health behaviour, health decline and metabolic processes common in health and disease. These results can inform future studies where epidemiological and biological pathways of cf-DNA are to be analysed in details, and for studies evaluating cf-DNA as a potential clinical marker.
The Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics facility will deliver brilliant gamma beams with high spectral density and a high degree of polarization starting in 2018 in Bucharest-Magurele, ...Romania. Several monitoring instruments are proposed for measuring the spectral, temporal, and spatial characteristics of the gamma beam. The d(gamma,n)p reaction has been investigated for its use in determining the gamma beam parameters in a series of measurements carried out at the High Intensity Gamma Source, Durham, U.S.A.. Measurements of the emitted neutrons have been performed using liquid scintillator and super(6) Li-glass neutron detectors at several incident gamma energies between 2.5 to 20 MeV . The experimental results presented in this paper have shown that an instrument based on the d(gamma,n)p reaction can be used to monitor the intensity and polarization of the gamma beam to be produced at ELI-NP.
We report the first large-acceptance measurement of polarization transfer from a polarized photon beam to a recoiling nucleon. The measurement pioneers a novel polarimetry technique, which can be ...applied to many other nuclear and hadron physics experiments. The commissioning reaction of super(1)H( gamma , p)pi super(0) in the range 0.4 < E sub( gamma ) < 1.4 GeV validates the technique and provides essential new data to constrain the excitation spectrum of the nucleon.
