The COVID-19 pandemic persists despite the ongoing mass immunization campaign, and there is a long journey ahead until effective control of the situation. In Brazil, telemedicine has grown widely. ...After the initial adaptation process during the first pandemic year, remote teaching and teleconsultation/ telemonitoring have consolidated such technology. By definition, telemedicine means the use of information technology to improve health care by approximating professionals and patients in distant locations. However, despite the acceptance in several health areas, dentists have rejected this new approach, claiming that telemedicine lacks the power to attract patients’ attention. To refute wrongly conceived theories and demonstrate the effectiveness of these resources, we described our experiences concerning dental and multidisciplinary residency education in two states (Sergipe and Paraíba) in the northeast region of Brazil, one of the most affected by the pandemic.
This paper describes an implementation of Tabu Search to cope with long-term transmission network expansion planning problems. Tabu Search is a metaheuristic proposed in 1989 to be applied to ...combinatorial problems. To assess the potential of our approach we test it with two cases of transmission network expansion planning. The results obtained by our approach let us to conclude that TS is a robust and promising technique to be applied in this problem.

ABSTRACT: The intervention educational policies and practices in the pandemic and post-pandemic context start to privilege the educational process focused on digital platforms and the personalization of network learning. This article aims to present the protagonism of humans and non-humans in pedagogical practices from the perspective of teachers and technical-pedagogical professionals from the State Education System of Paraíba. We conducted quantitative, qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and analytical research. We collected the data through a multi-thematic questionnaire using the tool Google Forms. The research universe covered 19,473 effective teachers and service providers from 9 to 21 December 2021. We conclude that in addition to the debates, theories, and methods of Distance Education and Online Education, it is necessary to reinvent the teaching-learning processes through (non-human) platforms, significantly changing the ways of researching, teaching, producing, and disseminating knowledge. Pedagogical practices instituted by digital platforms are activities in which human and non-human agents work together, interact, and form alliances and bonds based on certain instituted and organized activities. Although underemployed in its educational potential, the use of digital platforms made it impossible to think of an education that excludes the internet and digital technologies.
Air pollutants affect their quality, making, inappropriate, harmful and damaging to health in general. The air quality can be measured by the use of higher plants as bioindicators in environmental ...biomonitoring. In this study, we evaluated the increased frequency of micronuclei (MN) in Tradescantia pallida exposed to potentially toxic environments. The vegetables were implanted in five points (4 test and 1 control) for 15, 30 and 60 days. After this period of exposure, the young inflorescences were analyzed and the observation frequency of MN using the technique of Tradescantia-micronucleus (TRAD-MCN). The results showed an increased frequency of MN in pollen grains of T. pallida in environment with severe vehicular exhaust and manipulation of benzene derivatives, indicating that the compounds present in the atmosphere of these environments have genotoxic potential.
Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), particularly ankylosing spondylitis was historically considered a male's disease and has been under-recognized in women. Emerging evidence reveals sex differences in ...pathophysiology, disease presentation and therapeutic efficacy.
To identify differences between sexes in a Portuguese cohort of patients with axSpA regarding clinical manifestations, disease activity, functional capacity, patient related outcomes and presence of sacroiliitis on x-ray or magnetic resonance imaging.
Patients with ≥18 years fulfilling the ASAS- Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society classification criteria for axSpA registered in the electronic Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Register (Reuma.pt) were included in this multicentric cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic data, clinical features and imaging were collected from the first record in Reuma.pt. These variables were compared between sexes using Mann-Whitney test and Chi-Square test. Variables with a significant association with variable sex were considered in the multiple variable analysis to adjust the sex effect on the outcome variables. Statistical analysis was performed with R version 4.0.2 and p <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
A total of 1995 patients were included, 1114 (55.9%) men and 881 (44.1%) women. Men had an earlier disease onset (25.1 vs 28.4, p <0.001), were younger at diagnosis (26.9 vs 30.4, p<0.001) and were more frequently smokers (32.1% vs 15.7%, p <0.001). Comparing to women, men had worse Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrological Index scores (4.0 vs 3.4, p<0.001), higher levels of C-Reactive Protein (10.5 vs 6.9 mg/L, p <0.001) and were more often Human Leukocyte Antigen-B27 positive (67.8% vs 54%, p <0.001). In contrast, women more frequently had inflammatory bowel disease (8.8% vs 4.9%, p =0.004), higher levels of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (25.0 vs 21.0mm/h, p=0.003) and worse patient-related outcomes- Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (5.7 vs 4.5, p<0.001), Patient Global Assessment (60.0 vs 50.0, p <0.001) and fatigue (6.2 vs 5.0, p <0.001).
In this large multicentric study from a Portuguese axSpA cohort, we confirmed sex differences in patients with axSpA. This work brings awareness to these differences, resulting in less underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis, optimizing treatment strategies, and improving outcomes in axSpA.
Introduction. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be the most common cause of death worldwide, and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is noteworthy due to its great magnitude. Objectives. This ...study was carried out to evaluate the structure (molecular and particle size) and functionality of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) shortly after AMI, in the presence of acute inflammatory response. Casuistic and Methods. A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted between January 2015 and August 2016, with a total convenient sample of 85 patients. The patients’ data were segregated according to the Registry of Acute Myocardial Infarction (REAMI), with 45 confirmed AMI patients. The study groups consisted of patients from both sexes, older than 35 years, presented to the Hospital São Rafael (HSR) initially with AMI clinical symptoms. In addition, 40 nonischemic control patients (CPs), without AMI symptomatology, and according to previous inclusion criteria, were selected for convenience in an outpatient care unit. The HDL particle size was measured by laser light scattering (LLS), after separation of HDL from apoB-rich lipoproteins. The paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity was determined in a spectrophotometer by using paraoxon as a substrate. The other laboratory marker information, secondary data, was obtained in the laboratory system. Results. The HDL particle size, free cholesterol, and hs-CRP analysis showed significant differences when compared between REAMI and CP groups (p<0.0001, p=0.007, and p<0.0001; two-tailed unpaired t-test, respectively). Regarding paraoxonase, the data comparison between REAMI and CP groups was also significantly different (p<0.0067; two-tailed unpaired t-test). Conclusion. Despite an important current database on the HDL cholesterol role, our study provides relevant complementary information about the HDL particle susceptibility to the inflammation following AMI. The HDL particles’ quantitative and functional attributes should be measured as markers of HDL functionality.
Abstract Abstract: This article aims to investigate how the bicycle racing emerged in Curitiba. For this purpose, the newspapers from the period delimited between 1895 and 1913 were used as sources. The analysis of the materials indicated a relationship between the bicycle and the emerging urban ideas in the capital of Paraná in the temporality in question, as well as the need for a pedagogization of riding by bicycle because of the growing city. By way of conclusion the article points out that the presence of bicycles and races in Curitiba, at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, contributes significantly in the formation of athletic gestures and in the education of bodies in individuals who interacted with bicycles.
Background
Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease in which anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) are the diagnostic hallmark. Whether AMA-negative PBC patients ...represent a different phenotype of disease is highly debated.
Aims
The purpose of our study was to compare AMA-positive and AMA-negative PBC patients in a large non-white admixed Brazilian cohort.
Methods
The Brazilian Cholestasis Study Group multicentre database was reviewed to assess demographics, clinical features and treatment outcomes of Brazilian PBC patients, stratifying data according to AMA status.
Results
A total of 464 subjects (95.4% females, mean age 56 ± 5 years) with PBC were included. Three hundred and eighty-four (83%) subjects were AMA-positive, whereas 80 (17%) had AMA-negative PBC. Subjects with AMA-negative PBC were significantly younger (52.2 ± 14 vs. 59.6 ± 11 years,
p
= 0.001) and had their first symptom at an earlier age (43.2 ± 13 vs. 49.5 ± 12 years,
p
= 0.005). Frequency of type 2 diabetes was significantly increased in subjects with AMA-negative PBC (22.5% vs. 12.2%,
p
= 0.03). Lower IgM (272.2 ± 183 vs. 383.2 ± 378 mg/dL,
p
= 0.01) and triglycerides (107.6 ± 59.8 vs.129.3 ± 75.7 mg/dL,
p
= 0.025) and higher bilirubin (3.8 ± 13.5 vs. 1.8 ± 3.4 mg/dL, p = 0.02) levels were also observed in this subgroup. Response to ursodeoxycholic acid varied from 40.5 to 63.3% in AMA-positive and 34 to 62.3% in AMA-negative individuals, according to different response criteria. Outcomes such as development of liver-related complications, death and requirement for liver transplantation were similar in both groups.
Conclusions
AMA-negative PBC patients are similar to their AMA-positive counterparts with subtle differences observed in clinical and laboratory features.

Oral melanoma represents an unusual type of malignant tumor that is extremely aggressive, with poor prognosis that usually develops distant metastases, local recurrence, and low overall survival in 5 ...years. A 66-year-old female patient, ex-smoker, complained of palate lesion after a dental procedure 1 year ago, weight loss of 10 kg in 6 months, and cervical lymphadenopathy. The oroscopy evidenced a bleeding blackened lesion of approximately 10 cm located on the palate, affecting left gingival border and ipsilateral lymphadenopathy. Incisional biopsy was performed with a positive result for invasive melanoma and positive immunohistochemical profile for HMB-45, Melan-A, and S-100. Thorax tomography presented suspect image of secondary involvement, and clinical staging was defined as T4 BN1 M1, grade IVb. Surgical treatment was contraindicated due to metastatic lesions. Oncologists are waiting the result of c-Kit for therapeutic definition.
