Exposure to ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can cause adverse health effects, including premature mortality due to cardiopulmonary diseases and lung cancer. Recent studies quantify global ...air pollution mortality but not the contribution of different emissions sectors, or they focus on a specific sector.
We estimated the global mortality burden of anthropogenic ozone and PM2.5, and the impact of five emissions sectors, using a global chemical transport model at a finer horizontal resolution (0.67° × 0.5°) than previous studies.
We performed simulations for 2005 using the Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers, version 4 (MOZART-4), zeroing out all anthropogenic emissions and emissions from specific sectors (All Transportation, Land Transportation, Energy, Industry, and Residential and Commercial). We estimated premature mortality using a log-linear concentration-response function for ozone and an integrated exposure-response model for PM2.5.
We estimated 2.23 (95% CI: 1.04, 3.33) million deaths/year related to anthropogenic PM2.5, with the highest mortality in East Asia (48%). The Residential and Commercial sector had the greatest impact globally-675 (95% CI: 428, 899) thousand deaths/year-and in most regions. Land Transportation dominated in North America (32% of total anthropogenic PM2.5 mortality), and it had nearly the same impact (24%) as Residential and Commercial (27%) in Europe. Anthropogenic ozone was associated with 493 (95% CI: 122, 989) thousand deaths/year, with the Land Transportation sector having the greatest impact globally (16%).
The contributions of emissions sectors to ambient air pollution-related mortality differ among regions, suggesting region-specific air pollution control strategies. Global sector-specific actions targeting Land Transportation (ozone) and Residential and Commercial (PM2.5) sectors would particularly benefit human health. Abstract Introduction This study evaluated the pulpal and periapical responses of dogs' teeth after pulpotomy and pulp capping with a new tricalcium silicate–based cement (Biodentine) when compared ...with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) by radiographic, histopathologic, and histomicrobiological analyses. Methods Sixty roots (30 teeth) of dogs were divided into 2 groups, Biodentine ( n = 36 roots) and ProRoot MTA (control, n = 24 roots). Animals were killed after 120 days, and the teeth were subjected to histotechnical processing (hematoxylin-eosin and Brown and Brenn staining). Qualitative and quantitative histopathologic data were analyzed by Fisher exact and Mann-Whitney tests (α = 0.05). Results Radiographically, mineralized tissue bridge formation was observed in more specimens treated with Biodentine (96.8%) than with MTA (72.2%) ( P = .02). Integrity of the lamina dura and absence of periapical bone rarefaction and root resorption (external and internal) were observed in all specimens. Histopathologic and histomicrobiological analyses revealed mineralized tissue bridge formation, pulpal vitality, odontoblast layer integrity, preserved periodontal ligament, and absence of bone or root resorption and microorganisms in both groups. Although the bridges formed at the amputation site had similar morphology, they were significantly thicker in the Biodentine group ( P < .0001). Comparison between the radiographic and histopathologic results showed that radiographic visualization of more bridges in the Biodentine group was related to bridge thickness because radiographic diagnosis was flawed for bridges with thickness less than 0.5 mm. Fluorescence microscopy improved the visualization of bridge structure. Conclusions Biodentine presented tissue compatibility and allowed for mineralized tissue bridge formation after pulpotomy in all specimens with similar morphology and integrity to those formed with use of MTA. Periapical radiographs failed in detecting mineralized tissue bridges with thickness less than 0.5 mm.
Aim
The aim of this study was to evaluate the IFI16 and IFN‐α/β receptors expression during the genesis and development of experimental apical periodontitis (AP) in mice teeth.
Methodology
Apical ...periodontitis was induced in the lower first molars of 40 C57BL/6 mice. They were divided according to the experimental periods 2, 7, 14, 21 and 42 days (n = 8 per group). Five animals were used as a control group (without AP). Specimens were submitted to histological processing for description of the inflammatory process, immunostaining for the presence/absence and localization of IFI16 and IFN‐α/β receptors (qualitative and semi‐quantitative analysis) and tartrate‐resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) histoenzimology.
Results
The results showed a gradual development of AP over the experimental times. The expression of IFI16 was noticeably more exacerbated in the experimental early period (day 2) whilst the lowest expression was observed in the control group (p = .02). For IFN‐α/β receptors, a higher intensity staining was observed 42 days after AP induction, that was statistically different from the control group (p = .02). In addition, the number of TRAP‐positive cells was higher on the later periods (days 21 and 42; p < .001).
Conclusion
IFI16 protein expression was highest during the early periods after AP induction in mice teeth, whilst IFN‐α/β receptor expression was highest after AP became established.
In this work, chitosan-based films containing gelatin and chondroitin-4-sulfate (C4S) with and without ZnO particles were produced and tested in vitro to investigate their potential wound healing ...properties. Chitosans were produced from shrimp-head processing waste by alkaline deacetylation of chitin to obtain chitosans differing in molecular weight and degree of deacetylation (80 ± 0.5%). The film-forming solutions (chitosan, C4S and gelatin) and ZnO suspension showed no toxicity towards fibroblasts or keratinocytes. Chitosan was able to agglutinate red blood cells, and film-forming solutions induced no hemolysis. Film components were released into solution when incubated in PBS as demonstrated by protein and sugar determination. These data suggest that a stable, chitosan-based film with low toxicity and an ability to release components would be able to establish a biocompatible microenvironment for cell growth. Chitosan-based films significantly increased the percentage of wound healing (wound contraction from 65 to 86%) in skin with full-thickness excision when compared with control (51%), after 6 days. Moreover, histological analysis showed increased granulation tissue in chitosan and chitosan/gelatin/C4S/ZnO films. Chitosan-based biopolymer composites could be used for improved biomedical applications such as wound dressings, giving them enhanced properties.
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide that is used worldwide. It represents a potential harm to surface water, and when commercially mixed with surfactants, its uptake is greatly magnified. The ...most well-known glyphosate-based product is Roundup. This herbicide is potentially an endocrine disruptor and many studies have shown the cytotoxicity potential of glyphosate-based herbicides. In breast cancer (BC) cell lines it has been demonstrated that glyphosate can induce cellular proliferation via estrogen receptors. Therefore, we aimed to identify gene expression changes in ER+ and ER- BC cell lines treated with Roundup and AMPA, to address changes in canonical pathways that would be related or not with the ER pathway, which we believe could interfere with cell proliferation. Using the Human Transcriptome Arrays 2.0, we identified gene expression changes in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468 exposed to low concentrations and short exposure time to Roundup Original and AMPA. The results showed that at low concentration (0.05% Roundup) and short exposure (48h), both cell lines suffered deregulation of 11 canonical pathways, the most important being cell cycle and DNA damage repair pathways. Enrichment analysis showed similar results, except that MDA-MB-468 altered mainly metabolic processes. In contrast, 48h 10mM AMPA showed fewer differentially expressed genes, but also mainly related with metabolic processes. Our findings suggest that Roundup affects survival due to cell cycle deregulation and metabolism changes that may alter mitochondrial oxygen consumption, increase ROS levels, induce hypoxia, damage DNA repair, cause mutation accumulation and ultimately cell death. To our knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the effects of Roundup and AMPA on gene expression in triple negative BC cells. Therefore, we conclude that both compounds can cause cellular damage at low doses in a relatively short period of time in these two models, mainly affecting cell cycle and DNA repair.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined as a decrease in kidney function within hours, which encompasses both injury and impairment of renal function. AKI is not considered a pathological condition of ...single organ failure, but a syndrome in which the kidney plays an active role in the progression of multi-organ dysfunction. The incidence rate of AKI is increasing and becoming a common (8–16% of hospital admissions) and serious disease (four-fold increased hospital mortality) affecting public health costs worldwide. AKI also affects the young and previously healthy individuals affected by infectious diseases in Latin America. Because of the multifactorial pathophysiological mechanisms, there is no effective pharmacological therapy that prevents the evolution or reverses the injury once established; therefore, renal replacement therapy is the only current alternative available for renal patients. The awareness of an accurate and prompt recognition of AKI underlying the various clinical phenotypes is an urgent need for more effective therapeutic interventions to diminish mortality and socio-economic impacts of AKI. The use of biomarkers as an indicator of the initial stage of the disease is critical and the cornerstone to fulfill the gaps in the field. This review discusses emerging strategies from basic science toward the anticipation of features, treatment of AKI, and new treatments using pharmacological and stem cell therapies. We will also highlight bioartificial kidney studies, addressing the limitations of the development of this innovative technology.
Retinal and choroidal neovascularization (NV) and vascular leakage contribute to visual impairment in several common ocular diseases. The angiopoietin/TIE2 (ANG/TIE2) pathway maintains vascular ...integrity, and negative regulators of this pathway are potential therapeutic targets for these diseases. Here, we demonstrated that vascular endothelial-protein tyrosine phosphatase (VE-PTP), which negatively regulates TIE2 activation, is upregulated in hypoxic vascular endothelial cells, particularly in retinal NV. Intraocular injection of an anti-VE-PTP antibody previously shown to activate TIE2 suppressed ocular NV. Furthermore, a small-molecule inhibitor of VE-PTP catalytic activity (AKB-9778) activated TIE2, enhanced ANG1-induced TIE2 activation, and stimulated phosphorylation of signaling molecules in the TIE2 pathway, including AKT, eNOS, and ERK. In mouse models of neovascular age-related macular degeneration, AKB-9778 induced phosphorylation of TIE2 and strongly suppressed NV. Ischemia-induced retinal NV, which is relevant to diabetic retinopathy, was accentuated by the induction of ANG2 but inhibited by AKB-9778, even in the presence of high levels of ANG2. AKB-9778 also blocked VEGF-induced leakage from dermal and retinal vessels and prevented exudative retinal detachments in double-transgenic mice with high expression of VEGF in photoreceptors. These data support targeting VE-PTP to stabilize retinal and choroidal blood vessels and suggest that this strategy has potential for patients with a wide variety of retinal and choroidal vascular diseases.
Research shows negative correlations between media exposure of body images in the context of hegemonic beauty ideals and body satisfaction. The present study deals with the underlying mechanisms and ...the effects of different exposure contents. In the online experimental study, a sample consisting of 226 individuals (82.3% female, 17.7% male) received a three-minute exposure to Instagram images of women and men in the context of either hegemonic beauty ideals in the experimental group or body diversity in the control group. A conducted Mixed ANOVA with repeated measures showed significant group differences, including an increase in body dissatisfaction in the experimental group and a reduction in the control group after exposure. Statistically significant detrimental effects of exposure to images in the experimental group on women's state mood as well as descriptive similar tendencies on men's state mood were found. Moderating effects of the tendency to make upward social comparisons and the internalization of the gender-specific beauty ideal on the relationship between exposure content and the change scores of body dissatisfaction were found. Furthermore, a mediation model was calculated to investigate the effect of exposure content on post-measurement of body dissatisfaction, using the constructs "comparison processes regarding sexual attractiveness" and "assessment of one's own sexual attractiveness" as mediators. The model did not yield significant mediation, although significant relationships were found between the model components. Exploratory analyses were conducted on the influence of the assessment of one's own sexual attractiveness on related social comparisons and the intensity of engagement with Instagram content as a predictor of body dissatisfaction. The results highlight the relevance for psychoeducational purposes of addressing a critical engagement with depicted beauty ideals in social media. Moreover, the study proposes body diversity as an alternative content that can have a positive impact on body satisfaction, which can be actively sought during the individual Instagram user experience.
