Obesity is a very prevalent chronic disease worldwide and has been suggested to increase susceptibility of periodontitis. The aim of this paper was to provide a systematic review of the association ...between obesity and periodontal disease, and to determine the possible mechanisms underlying in this relationship.
A literature search was carried out in the databases PubMed-Medline and Embase. Controlled clinical trials and observational studies identifying periodontal and body composition parameters were selected. Each article was subjected to data extraction and quality assessment.
A total of 284 articles were identified, of which 64 were preselected and 28 were finally included in the review. All the studies described an association between obesity and periodontal disease, except two articles that reported no such association. Obesity is characterized by a chronic subclinical inflammation that could exacerbate other chronic inflammatory disorders like as periodontitis.
The association between obesity and periodontitis was consistent with a compelling pattern of increased risk of periodontitis in overweight or obese individuals. Although the underlying pathophysiological mechanism remains unclear, it has been pointed out that the development of insulin resistance as a consequence of a chronic inflammatory state and oxidative stress could be implicated in the association between obesity and periodontitis. Further prospective longitudinal studies are needed to define the magnitude of this association and to elucidate the causal biological mechanisms.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) has a prevalence of 1%-3% in adults. Adult-onset AD has only been defined recently, and lack of familiarity with this condition and confusion regarding the appropriate ...terminology persist. AD may first appear in childhood or de novo in adults and is characterized by pronounced clinical heterogeneity. The disease often deviates from the classic pattern of flexural dermatitis, and there are forms of presentation that are specific to adults, such as head-and-neck dermatitis, chronic eczema of the hands, multiple areas of lichenification, or prurigo lesions. Although diagnosis is clinical, adult-onset AD frequently does not fit the traditional diagnostic criteria for the disease, which were developed for children. Thus, AD is often a diagnosis of exclusion, especially in de novo cases. Additional diagnostic tests, such as the patch test, prick test, skin biopsy, or blood test, are usually necessary to rule out other diseases or other types of eczema appearing concomitantly with AD. This article presents an update of the different forms of clinical presentation for AD in adults along with a proposed diagnostic approach, as new treatments will appear in the near future and many patients will not be able to benefit from them unless they are properly diagnosed.
Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is capable of fabricating 3D structures with dimensions from sub-µm to a few hundred µm. As a direct laser writing (DLW) process, fabrication time of 3D TPP structures ...scale with the third order, limiting its use in large volume fabrication. Here, we report on a scalable fabrication method that cuts fabrication time to a fraction. A parallelized 9 multi-beamlets DLW process, created by a fixed diffraction optical element (DOE) and subsequent stitching are used to fabricate large periodic high aspect ratio 3D microstructured arrays with sub-micron features spanning several hundred of µm
. The wall structure in the array is designed with a minimum of traced lines and is created by a low numerical aperture (NA) microscope objective, leading to self-supporting lines omitting the need for line-hatching. The fabricated periodic arrays are applied in a cell - 3D microstructure interaction study using living HeLa cells. First indications of increased cell proliferation in the presence of 3D microstructures compared to planar surfaces are obtained. Furthermore, the cells adopt an elongated morphology when attached to the 3D microstructured surfaces. Both results constitute promising findings rendering the 3D microstructures a suited tool for cell interaction experiments, e.g. for cell migration, separation or even tissue engineering studies.
We report a theranostic nanoparticle that can express ultrasound (US) imaging and simultaneous therapeutic functions for cancer treatment. We developed doxorubicin-loaded calcium carbonate (CaCO3) ...hybrid nanoparticles (DOX-CaCO3-MNPs) through a block copolymer templated in situ mineralization approach. The nanoparticles exhibited strong echogenic signals at tumoral acid pH by producing carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles and showed excellent echo persistence. In vivo results demonstrated that the DOX-CaCO3-MNPs generated CO2 bubbles at tumor tissues sufficient for echogenic reflectivity under a US field. In contrast, the DOX-CaCO3-MNPs located in the liver or tumor-free subcutaneous area did not generate the CO2 bubbles necessary for US contrast. The DOX-CaCO3-MNPs could also trigger the DOX release simultaneously with CO2 bubble generation at the acidic tumoral environment. The DOX-CaCO3-MNPs displayed effective antitumor therapeutic activity in tumor-bearing mice. The concept described in this work may serve as a useful guide for development of various theranostic nanoparticles for US imaging and therapy of various cancers.

The literature search was conducted in March 2015, using the Medline and Embase databases. The "Clinical Trial", from 2006 to March 2015, was carried out in English and only on human cases. The draft of the systematic review and assessment of the methodological quality of the trials was carried out following the criteria of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and the "Oxford Quality Scale".
Finally, a total of 26 trials were identified that met the previously defined selection and quality criteria; 14 related to drug treatments for dry mouth, 10 with non-pharmacological treatment and 2 with alternative treatments.
Pilocarpine continues to be the best performing sialogogue drug for subjects with xerostomia due to radiation on head and neck cancer or diseases such as Sjogren's Syndrome. For patients with dry mouth caused solely by medication, there are some positive indications from the use of malic acid, along with other elements that counteract the harmful effect on dental enamel. In general, lubrication of oral mucous membrane reduces the symptoms, although the effects are short-lived.
Currently no treat-to-target framework to guide systemic treatment in adults with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis exists. We sought to reach international consensus through an eDelphi process on ...a core set of recommendations for such an approach. Recommendations were developed by an international Steering Committee, spanning 3 areas (Guiding Principles, Decision Making, and Outcome Thresholds) and 2 specific time-points; an initial acceptable target at 3 months and an optimal target at 6 months, each based on improvements in patient global assessment plus at least one specific outcome domain. These treat-to-target- orientated recommendations were evaluated by an extended international panel of physicians, nurses and patients. Proposed recommendations were rated using a 9-point Likert scale; for each recommendation, consensus agreement was reached if ≥ 75% of all respondents rated agreement as ≥ 7. Consensus on 16 core recommendations was reached over 2 eDelphi rounds. These provide a framework for shared decision-making on systemic treatment continuation, modification, or discontinuation.

The aim of the present study was to calibrate the Periotron® model 8010 with volumes of three different fluids (distilled water, serum, and saliva) and to identify which of the three is the most ...reliable, feasible, and reproducible for routine calibration.
A total of 450 samples of Periopaper® were divided into three groups (150 each per group): distilled water, serum matrix and saliva. A calibration curve was run with 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 and 1.25 µl of each of the fluids, and the results were determined in Periotron units (PU). Statistical analysis was performed with one-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni's post hoc test and a linear equation.
Distilled water presented the lowest levels of PU at all volumes, while serum showed the highest levels at high volumes. Linear regression equations rendered similar slopes for saliva and distilled water, while serum was statistically different. Saliva presented a reproduction percentage of 99.7%, which indicated better accuracy and precision than serum and distilled water.
Saliva is more reliable and accurate than water or serum for the purpose of calibration of the Periotron® model 8010, though it shares drawbacks with serum. Distilled water is more easily available and does not require any additional procedure, in addition to producing a similar slope to saliva and a smaller deviation from the media than serum.
The use of genomic testing for selecting replacement heifers in commercial farms has recently attracted much attention. Fertility traits are among the most complex, hard to measure, and lowly ...heritable traits, and hence they can benefit the most from genomic testing. The objectives of this study were to assess the relationship between early genomic prediction of daughter pregnancy rate (GDPR) and pregnancy at the first service (P1), pregnancy at the end of lactation (PEND), number of services for conception (NSFC), days from calving to first service (TP1), and days open (TPEND). Data for GDPR, milk production, and reproductive outcomes from 1,401 multiparous and 3,044 primiparous Holstein cows from 4 commercial farms with the same reproductive management were used in the analyses. All animals were genotyped and genomically evaluated as heifers before first breeding, so no phenotypic data were available for predicting genomic merits. Data for GDPR and milk production were categorized in quartiles. The statistical models included GDPR, farm-year-season of the first insemination, milk yield, breeding code (estrus detection or timed artificial insemination), and the interaction terms as potential predictors for the different reproductive outcomes evaluated. Data were analyzed separately for primiparous and multiparous cows. The proportion of cows bred by estrus detection increased linearly from lowest to highest GDPR in primiparous cows. There were positive associations of GDPR for P1, PEND, NSFC, TP1, and TPEND in both primiparous and multiparous cows. For instance, positive GDPR effects in multiparous cows included a 15.7% higher P1 (47.6% vs. 31.9%), 11.9% higher PEND (84.9% vs. 73.0%), and 48.0-d shorter TPEND (139.8 vs. 175.7 d) for the highest quartile compared with the lowest quartile. Milk yield affected PEND in multiparous cows, and TPEND and NSFC affected PEND in primiparous cows. The only significant interaction between GDPR and milk production was detected for NSFC in primiparous cows, where high-producing cows showed a reduction in NSFC as GDPR increased, whereas low-producing cows showed no relationship between GDPR and NSFC. Overall, our findings show that GDPR can be effectively used as a predictor of future reproductive performance, reaffirming the potential benefits of applying early genomic predictions for making accurate early selection decisions.
Microencapsulation of hydrophobic (α-tocopherol) and hydrophilic (ascorbic acid) vitamins by native (non-modified) and modified soy protein isolate (SPI) was carried out using a spray-drying ...technique. Proteins' functional properties were modified by acylation and cationization reactions in aqueous alkaline media. The results obtained demonstrated that SPI modification resulted in decreased emulsion droplet size and viscosity. All preparations with ascorbic acid (AA) had lower viscosity and microparticle size than those with α-tocopherol (T). Moreover, grafting of fatty acid chains to SPI by acylation improved its amphiphilic character and affinity with hydrophobic substances. Thus, the microencapsulation efficiency of T was increased from 79.7% to 94.8% and the microencapsulation efficiency of AA was reduced from 91.8% to 57.3% compared to native SPI. Conversely, attachment of quaternary ammonium cationic groups to proteinic chains by cationization, increased SPI solubility and favored the AA microencapsulation. This study illustrated that an appropriate modification of SPI can improve the microencapsulation efficiency of suitable active cores.

Background
Metal allergies are the most frequent causes of allergic contact dermatitis. Although the use of palladium is increasing, it is not included in any baseline series.
Objective
To assess the ...prevalence of hypersensitivity to palladium and to describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients who are sensitized to palladium dichloride (PdCl2).
Methods
A single‐centre, retrospective study of 15 years of patch testing with the Spanish baseline series supplemented with PdCl2 2% pet. was performed. We collected clinical and demographic data and data on co‐sensitization among the metals studied, and we compared patients who were sensitized to palladium, with or without co‐sensitization to nickel, with the rest of the study population.
Results
Among the 3678 included patients, 730 (19.9%) were sensitized to nickel sulfate. The prevalence of sensitization to PdCl2 (n = 316, 8.6%) was higher than the prevalence of sensitization to potassium dichromate (n = 240, 6.5%) and similar to the prevalence of sensitization to cobalt chloride (n = 353, 9.6%). Only 26 (8.2%) of the patients sensitized to palladium were not co‐sensitized to nickel. The percentage of men and patients aged ≥40 years was higher in this subgroup than in the patients with nickel co‐sensitization.
Conclusions
Given the high prevalence of hypersensitivity to PdCl2, this metal salt should be included in the Spanish baseline series, notwithstanding the frequency of co‐sensitization to nickel.
