Health care solutions are needed to meet the need of an ageing population. Health care champions are people who endorse the adoption of new initiatives being implemented within health care settings. ...Although the role of champions has been cited as key to the success of numerous community-based interventions implemented to improve the care of older adults with chronic conditions, no synthesis of their implementation experiences have been conducted. We report on a scoping review protocol that will be applied to collect evidence on the role of champions within community-based health interventions to support older adults with chronic conditions. Specifically, we will identify how the term 'champion' is used and defined (i.e., conceptualized) and identify the roles (i.e., professional background) and functions of champions (i.e., responsibilities). We will also explore how this role impacts program implementation. This is a scoping review protocol informed by guidelines for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and a six-stage scoping review methodology. Peer-review literature will be retrieved from Medline, CINAHL, PubMed, PsycInfo, Cochrane JBI and Scopus databases, using a peer-reviewed search strategy developed in collaboration with an Information Specialist. The scoping review will consider all empirical studies published in English. Two reviewers will pilot-test the screening criteria and data abstraction forms, and then independently screen the literature. Extracted data will be analyzed numerically and thematically. Self-identified champions will be consulted to refine the practice recommendations from this work. This scoping review will broadly and systematically identify, define and expand existing knowledge on champions' impact in implementing community-based interventions to support older adults with chronic conditions. We anticipate that our results will lead to a greater understanding of the characteristics and role champions play within these interventions, which will be relevant to a wide range of knowledge users, including researchers, decision-makers, and health care providers.

A growing body of evidence suggests that older adults are particularly vulnerable to poor care as they transition across care environments. Thus, they require transitional care services as they ...transition across healthcare settings. To help make intervention research meaningful to the older adults the intervention aims to serve, many researchers aim to study their experiences, by actively involving them in research processes. However, collecting data from older adults with various forms of disability often assumes that the research methods selected are appropriate for them. This scoping review will map the evidence on research methods to collect data from older adults with disabilities within the transitional care literature. The proposed scoping review follows the framework originally described by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Manual: (1) developing a search strategy, (2) evidence screening and selection, (3) data extraction; and (4) analysis. We will include studies identified through a comprehensive search of peer-reviewed and empirical literature reporting on research methods used to elicit the experiences of older adults with disabilities in transitional care interventions. In addition, we will search the reference lists of included studies. The findings of this review will be narratively synthesized. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews will guide the reporting of the methods and results. The overarching goal of this study is to develop strategies to assist the research community in increasing the inclusion of older adults with disabilities in transitional care research. The findings of this review will highlight recommendations for research to inform data collection within future intervention research for older adults with disabilities. Study findings will be disseminated via a publication and presentations.

Genomics 1: 4150, 1999.An increased phospholamban (PLB)-to-sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum Ca 2+ -ATPase (SERCA) ratio has been suggested to contribute to the slowing of relaxation in failing human ventricle. We have used an adenoviral vector carrying the sequence for PLB to increase this ratio in isolated adult rat ventricular myocytes, and we have examined the functional consequences. With use of adenoviral vectors, the PLB content of adult rat myocytes was increased 2.73-fold, with SERCA2a levels unchanged. Maximum contraction amplitude of PLB-overexpressing myocytes was decreased to 6.9 ± 0.3% shortening compared with 11.2 ± 0.8% for 24-h controls (Con; P < 0.001, 5 preparations, 103 myocytes). Maximum rates of shortening and relengthening were also significantly decreased. Ca 2+ transient amplitudes were slightly depressed, and time to 50% decay of the transients was significantly increased: 237 ± 18 ( n = 14 myocytes) and 432 ± 32 ms in Con and PLB ( n = 15) myocytes, respectively ( P < 0.001). The amount of Ca 2+ in the sarcoplasmic reticulum stores was reduced by 21% ( P < 0.05). Relaxation was significantly slower in PLB than in Con myocytes when the Na + /Ca 2+ exchanger was blocked but not when sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ uptake was inhibited. Adenovirus infection with Ad.RSV.PLB was therefore able to produce functional changes in adult cardiac myocytes within 24 h, consistent with overexpression of PLB and similar to those seen in failing human heart.

Biochar is a widely known soil amendment. Here we synthesize the available information on influence of biochar application on different soil properties and crop productivity using meta-analysis. ...Global data on influence of biochar applications on different soil physical, chemical, microbial properties, and crop productivity were extracted from literature and statistically analyzed. Based on selection criteria, 59 studies from the literature published between 2012 and 2021 were selected for the meta-analysis. Correlations were developed between effect size of biochar application on different soil properties and crop productivity. Application of biochar increased soil pH, cation exchange capacity, and organic carbon by 46%, 20%, and 27%, respectively, with greater effects in coarse and fine-textured soils. Effects on chemical properties were variable among biochar prepared from different feedstocks. Among physical properties, biochar application reduced bulk densities by 29% and increased porosity by 59%. Biochar prepared at higher pyrolytic temperatures (> 500 ℃) improved bulk density and porosity to greater extents (31% and 66%, respectively). Biochar prepared at lower pyrolytic temperatures (< 500 ℃) had a greater effect on microbial diversity (both bacterial and fungal), with more diverse bacterial populations in medium and coarse textured soils, while fungal diversity increased in fine textured soils. Biochar applications increased crop productivity only in fine and coarse textured soil. The effect size of biochar application on crop productivity was correlated with responses to physical properties of soils. The meta-analysis highlighted the need to conduct long-term field experiments to provide better explanations for changes in biochar properties as it undergoes aging, its longer-term effects on soil properties, and timing of re-application of different biochars.

Plants are known to produce a variety of bioactive metabolites which are being used to cure various life threatening and chronic diseases. The molecular mechanism of action of such bioactive ...molecules, may open up new avenues for the scientific community to develop or improve novel therapeutic approaches to tackle dreadful diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. Ursolic acid (UA) is one among the categories of such plant-based therapeutic metabolites having multiple intracellular and extracellular targets that play role in apoptosis, metastasis, angiogenesis and inflammatory processes. Moreover, the synthetic derivatives of UA have also been seen to be involved in a range of pharmacological applications, which are associated with prevention of diseases. Evidences suggest that UA could be used as a potential candidate to develop a comprehensive competent strategy towards the treatment and prevention of health disorders. The review article herein describes the possible therapeutic effects of UA along with putative mechanism of action.

Retinoblastoma is a childhood retinal tumour that initiates in response to biallelic RB1 inactivation and loss of functional retinoblastoma (Rb) protein. Although Rb has diverse tumour-suppressor ...functions and is inactivated in many cancers, germline RB1 mutations predispose to retinoblastoma far more strongly than to other malignancies. This tropism suggests that retinal cell-type-specific circuitry sensitizes to Rb loss, yet the nature of the circuitry and the cell type in which it operates have been unclear. Here we show that post-mitotic human cone precursors are uniquely sensitive to Rb depletion. Rb knockdown induced cone precursor proliferation in prospectively isolated populations and in intact retina. Proliferation followed the induction of E2F-regulated genes, and depended on factors having strong expression in maturing cone precursors and crucial roles in retinoblastoma cell proliferation, including MYCN and MDM2. Proliferation of Rb-depleted cones and retinoblastoma cells also depended on the Rb-related protein p107, SKP2, and a p27 downregulation associated with cone precursor maturation. Moreover, Rb-depleted cone precursors formed tumours in orthotopic xenografts with histological features and protein expression typical of human retinoblastoma. These findings provide a compelling molecular rationale for a cone precursor origin of retinoblastoma. More generally, they demonstrate that cell-type-specific circuitry can collaborate with an initiating oncogenic mutation to enable tumorigenesis.

The consumption of diet-based naturally bioactive metabolites is preferred to synthetic material in order to avert health-associated disorders. Among the plant-derived polyphenols, ...kaempferol (KMF) is considered as a valuable functional food ingredient with a broad range of therapeutic applications such as anti-cancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory uses. KMF acts on a range of intracellular as well as extracellular targets involved in the cell signaling pathways that in turn are known to regulate the hallmarks of cancer growth progressions like apoptosis, cell cycle, invasion or metastasis, angiogenesis and inflammation. Importantly, the understanding of mechanisms of action of KMF-mediated therapeutic effects may help the scientific community to design novel strategies for the treatment of dreadful diseases. The current review summarizes the various types of molecular targets of KMF in cancer cells as well as other health-associated disorders. In addition, this review also highlights the absorption, metabolism and epidemiological findings.
Organic pollutants, with their increasing concentrations in the ambient air, are posing a severe threat to human health. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), due to their active functionalities and ...porous nature, have emerged as potential materials for the capture of organic pollutants and cleaning of the environment/air. In this work, the functionalization of cotton fabric is reported by the in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) MOFs on carboxymethylated cotton (CM Cotton) by employing a rapid and eco-friendly approach. The physicochemical characterization of the MOF functionalized fabrics (ZIF-8@CM Cotton and ZIF-67@CM Cotton) revealed uniform and wash durable attachment of porous ZIF nanocrystals on the surface of the fabric. These ZIF functionalized fabrics possessed high surface area and have been observed to adsorb significantly high concentrations of organic pollutants such as aniline, benzene, and styrene from ambient air. Interestingly these fabrics could be regenerated and reused repeatedly without any deterioration in their adsorption capacity. The negative and low binding energies calculated by DFT confirmed the physisorption of the aromatic pollutants on the surface of MOF functionalized fabrics. Such fabrics have a huge potential as protective textiles, anti-odor clothing, air purification filters, and related products.
