The traditional use of the M. charantia L. plant to treat coughs, fever and expectoration is widely practiced in different cultures, but its effectiveness and safety still require scientific ...investigation. This study sought to perform a chemical analysis and evaluate the antitussive, expectorant and antipyretic effects of the ethanolic extract of M. charantia leaves (EEMc) in rats and mice. The EEMc was subjected to chemical analysis by HPLC-DAD, revealing the presence of the flavonoids astragalin and isoquercetin. Acute oral toxicity in mice did not result in deaths, although changes in liver weight and stool consistency were observed. EEMc demonstrated an antitussive effect at doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg in mice subjected to cough induction by citric acid nebulization. Furthermore, it showed expectorant activity at a dose of 300 mg/kg, assessed based on the elimination of the phenol red marker in bronchoalveolar lavage. In the evaluation of antipyretic activity in rats, fever induced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae was reduced at all doses tested during the first hour after treatment. This innovative study identified the presence of astragalin and isoquercetin in EEMc and indicated that the extract has antitussive, expectorant and antipyretic properties.
Abstract
Hyperglycemia leads to microvascular lesions in various tissues. In diabetic nephropathy—DN, alterations in usual markers reflect an already installed disease. The study of new biomarkers ...for the early detection of diabetic complications can bring new prevention perspectives. Rats were divided into diabetic adult—DMA—or elderly—DME and control sham adult—CSA—or control sham elderly—CSE. Blood and urine samples were collected for biochemical analysis. Bulbar region, cardiac, hepatic and renal tissues were collected for target gene expression studies. As result, DMA showed decreased
TNFR1
,
MCT1
and
CD147
expression in the bulbar region,
TNFR1
in the heart,
VEGFA
and
CD147
in the kidney and
TNFR1
in blood. Positive correlations were found between
TNFR1
and
MCT1
in the bulbar region and HbA1c and plasma creatinine, respectively. DME showed positive correlation in the bulbar region between
TNFR1
and glycemia, in addition to negative correlations between
CD147
in the heart versus glycemia and urea. We concluded that the initial hyperglycemic stimulus already promotes changes in the expression of genes involved in the inflammatory and metabolic pathways, and aging alters this profile. These changes prior to the onset of diseases such as DN, show that they have potential for early biomarkers studies.
Cell phones have become indispensable for professional activities, including healthcare. Thus, they are possible sources of bacterial contamination. There is a scarcity of data in the literature ...regarding identification of risk factors for contamination of cell phones with pathogenic bacteria.
To compare the prevalence rates of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and/or Enterobacteriaceae on cell phones belonging to hospital healthcare staff and university students in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, and to identify variables associated with such contamination.
Cross-sectional study conducted in a public university's referral hospital and lecture buildings in 2017.
We sampled the surface of cell phones using the dipslide method, with Baird-Parker agar and Escherichia coli-coliform chromogenic (ECC) agar. We assessed the population's sociodemographic, behavioral and hygiene characteristics through interviews. Possible presence of S. aureus colonies was confirmed using agglutination tests, with evaluation of methicillin sensitivity. Colonies in ECC medium were counted. Stepwise logistic regression (forward P < 0.15) was performed to identify characteristics associated with bacterial contamination.
The prevalence rates of S. aureus, MRSA and Enterobacteriaceae were, respectively, 32%, 4% and 3%. No difference was found between the hospital and university-based populations (P > 0.05). The only variable associated with bacterial contamination was the use of cloth/velvet/leather phone cases (odds ratio: 2.92; 95% confidence interval: 1.08-7.91).
Potentially pathogenic bacteria were prevalent on the cell phones of this hospital and university population. Use of phone cases made of cloth-like material should be discouraged, especially in hospital settings.

The article discusses the use of natural goods in relation to the protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Brings as examples the Fandango Caiçara and the Roda de Capoeira, cultural ...expressions made heritage that use species of the Atlantic Forest biomein the composition of its material base. The analysis of dossiers of cultural expressions and the legislation on intangible cultural heritage allows us to understand that in Brazil, the protection of this type of heritage does not consider into account the relationship with the material base that it contains and that is directly related to the uses from nature. For this reason, the intended safeguard is not fully implemented, which makes this article to consider that effective protection implies the integrated management of culture, nature and territory, a challenge to be faced by the cultural protection agencies and nature protection agencies.

•Room temperature saliva stability in hydrophilic cotton allow self-collection.•Self-collected saliva show high specificity for SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR diagnosis.•Accuracy of RT-qPCR with local ...consumables is similar to WHO recommended kits.•SARS-CoV-2 RT-endpoint PCR on saliva supports epidemiological investigation.•Spike encoding PCR fragment revealed a variant with partial HD1 deletion.
Until mass vaccination befalls, control of the new betacoronavirus-associated severe acute respiratory syndrome pandemic (SARS-CoV-2) is based on decreasing virus circulation by social distancing and blocking transmission foci after diagnosis. Globally adopted SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic criteria embrace viral RNA detection by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) on nasopharynx secretions, which requires healthcare facilities and specialized personnel for sample collection. To develop an alternative protocol, hydrophilic cotton as the material and saliva as the source for biological sample collection in qRT-PCR/RT-endpoint-PCR SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic methods prepared with local consumables were evaluated using 99 archived nasopharynx samples previously diagnosed as positive for SARS-CoV-2 and 111 prospective saliva samples pared with nasopharynx samples from patients attending the local reference ABC Medical School diagnostic laboratory. The kappa agreement coefficient between the SARS-CoV-2 qRT-PCR and RT-endpoint-PCR was k = 0.97 (95 % CI 0.92−1.00) and k = 0.90 (95 % CI 0.81−0.99), respectively, on SARS-CoV-2-positive archived samples, with the initial qRT-PCR CT under 25. The agreement coefficient of the SARS-CoV-2 alternative saliva diagnostic protocol, when used to test the paired nasopharynx samples, was k = 0.79 (95 % CI 0.56–1,00). These data support that the SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic assay based on self-collected saliva on cotton represents an alternative protocol for mass diagnosis and epidemiological studies in low-income regions.
