The concept of high refractive index subwavelength dielectric nanoresonators, supporting electric and magnetic optical resonance, is a promising platform for waveguiding, sensing, and nonlinear ...nanophotonic devices. However, high concentration of defects in the nanoresonators diminishes their resonant properties, which are crucially dependent on their internal losses. Therefore, it seems to be inevitable to use initially crystalline materials for fabrication of the nanoresonators. Here, we show that the fabrication of crystalline (low-loss) resonant silicon nanoparticles by femtosecond laser ablation of amorphous (high-loss) silicon thin films is possible. We apply two conceptually different approaches: recently proposed laser-induced transfer and a novel laser writing technique for large-scale fabrication of the crystalline nanoparticles. The crystallinity of the fabricated nanoparticles is proven by Raman spectroscopy and electron transmission microscopy, whereas optical resonant properties of the nanoparticles are studied using dark-field optical spectroscopy and full-wave electromagnetic simulations.

In this review, we aim to highlight the application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a useful neuroimaging technique for the investigation of cognitive development. We focus on ...brain activation changes during the development of mathematics and language skills in schoolchildren. We discuss how technical limitations of common neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have resulted in our limited understanding of neural changes during development, while fNIRS would be a suitable and child-friendly method to examine cognitive development. Moreover, this technique enables us to go to schools to collect large samples of data from children in ecologically valid settings. Furthermore, we report findings of fNIRS studies in the fields of mathematics and language, followed by a discussion of the outlook of fNIRS in these fields. We suggest fNIRS as an additional technique to track brain activation changes in the field of educational neuroscience.
Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a common complication of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Development of bioactive wound healing covers is an important task in medicine. The use of autologous ...platelet-rich plasma (PRP) consisting of growth factors, cytokines and components of extracellular matrix is a perspective approach for DFU treatment, but we previously found that some T2DM PRP samples have a toxic effect on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in vitro. Here, we covalently immobilized T2DM PRP proteins on polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers, and the growth of endothelial cells on the PCL-COOH-PRP was investigated. Additionally, the level of NO reflecting the cytotoxic effects of PRP, angiogenin, and VEGF levels were measured in T2DM PRP samples. The results showed that the application of PCL-COOH-PRP nanofibers allows to remove the cytotoxicity of T2DM PRP and to improve endothelial cell adhesion and proliferative activity. We showed that the origin of T2DM PRP (the level of PRP toxicity or presence/absence of DFU) does not influence the efficiency of cell growth on PCL-COOH-PRP, and on the level of angiogenin, vascular epidermal growth factor (VEGF) in PRP itself.
The ability of Prussian Blue, ferric hexacyanoferrate (FeHCF), to sensitively and selectively detect hydrogen peroxide by its reduction in the presence of oxygen is of high importance for analytical ...chemistry. Success with Prussian Blue (PB) provided an appearance of contradictory reports concerning electrocatalysis of the other transition metal hexacyanoferrates (HCFs) in H2O2 reduction. Investigating thermodynamics of the catalyzed reactions as well as electrochemical properties of the hexacyanoferrates, we are able to conclude that the noniron hexacyanoferrates themselves are completely electrocatalytically inactive, except for a minor electrocatalysis in the opposite reaction, hydrogen peroxide oxidation, registered for NiHCF. Concerning the most important reaction, H2O2 reduction, the observed electrocatalytic activity (by the way, 100 times decreased compared to PB) is due to the presence of FeHCF (Prussian Blue) as defects in the structure of noniron hexacyanoferrates. This finding, considering other unique properties of transition metal HCFs, will provide a systematic search for sensing materials with improved analytical performance characteristics.
Detection of breast cancer has particular importance for the diagnosis of cancer diseases. This is the most common type of cancer among women. Breast cancer is a malignant tumor of the glandular ...tissue of the breast. It is proposed to use infrared spectroscopy of blood serum as a simple and quick way to detect breast cancer. The paper presents the results of research using the methods of multivariate processing of IR spectra of human blood serum obtained by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The paper presents the results of research using the methods of multivariate processing of IR spectra of human blood serum obtained by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. A sufficiently large sample of patients and healthy donors was diagnosed. Blood samples are examined from 66 patients who are clinically diagnosed with breast cancer and 80 healthy volunteers. A feature of the applied approach was a combination of the method of principal component analysis (PCA) and principal component regression (PCR) for processing the IR spectra of blood serum. The PCA method allows us to determine the spectral bands referring for the intensity differences between the control group and the patient group. Shown, that the range of 1306–1250cm−1 in the IR spectrum of blood serum is diagnostically significant for breast cancer. This range corresponds to the vibrations of several functional groups of DNA and RNA, which play a key role in discrimination in breast cancer screening using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. It is shown that the proposed method has advantages in ease of use for clinical diagnosis and gives good results for the identification of breast cancer. The values of sensitivity (92.3%) and specificity (87.1%) obtained using the PCR method are close to those of mammography and ultrasound. This indicates the possibility of using this method in real clinical laboratory diagnostics.

Functional peculiarities of paralemniscal subdivision of the thalamocortical system were examined in normal Wistar and in WAG/Rij rats genetically prone to absence epilepsy. In 6-7-month-old WAG/Rij ...characterized by developed epileptic activity, the response of cortical somatosensory neurons to single electrical stimulation of the posterior thalamic nucleus was phasic, whereas in normal Wistar rats, similar reaction was tonic. The study views this phasic response as neural equivalent of spike-wave discharges known as typical EEG symptom of absence epilepsy.
The aggregation phenomena in aqueous solutions of hydrophobically modified (HM) chitosan, containing 4 mol % of n-dodecyl side chains, were studied by viscometry and fluorescence spectroscopy with ...pyrene as a probe. The results are compared with those for unmodified chitosan. Surprisingly, fluorescence data reveal the appearance of intermolecular hydrophobic aggregates both in chitosan and in HM chitosan. Nevertheless, these polymers exhibit quite different rheological properties: upon the formation of aggregates the viscosity of HM chitosan sharply increases, while that of unmodified chitosan raises only slightly. The aggregation models for both chitosan and its hydrophobic derivative were proposed. It was shown that in solutions of HM chitosan two types of hydrophobic domains exist: hydrophobic domains typical for different associating polymers with hydrophobic side chains and hydrophobic domains inherent to chitosan itself.
The marine shore sulfidic mine tailings dump at the Chañaral Bay in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile, is characterized by extreme acidity, high salinity, and high heavy metals concentrations. Due ...to pyrite oxidation, metals (especially copper) are mobilized under acidic conditions and transported toward the tailings surface and precipitate as secondary minerals (Dold, Environ. Sci. Technol. 2006, 40, 752–758.). Depth profiles of total cell counts in this almost organic-carbon free multiple extreme environment showed variable numbers with up to 108 cells g–1 dry weight for 50 samples at four sites. Real-time PCR quantification and bacterial 16S rRNA gene diversity analysis via clone libraries revealed a dominance of Bacteria over Archaea and the frequent occurrence of the acidophilic iron(II)- and sulfur-oxidizing and iron(III)-reducing genera Acidithiobacillus, Alicyclobacillus, and Sulfobacillus. Acidophilic chemolithoautotrophic iron(II)-oxidizing bacteria were also frequently found via most-probable-number (MPN) cultivation. Halotolerant iron(II)-oxidizers in enrichment cultures were active at NaCl concentrations up to 1 M. Maximal microcalorimetrically determined pyrite oxidation rates coincided with maxima of the pyrite content, total cell counts, and MPN of iron(II)-oxidizers. These findings indicate that microbial pyrite oxidation and metal mobilization preferentially occur in distinct tailings layers at high salinity. Microorganisms for biomining with seawater salt concentrations obviously exist in nature.
Internet Industrial Control Systems (IICSs) that connect technological appliances and services with physical systems have become a new direction of research as they face different types of ...cyber-attacks that threaten their success in providing continuous services to organizations. Such threats cause firms to suffer financial and reputational losses and the stealing of important information. Although Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDSs) have been proposed to protect against them, they have the difficult task of collecting information for use in developing an intelligent NIDS which can proficiently detect existing and new attacks. In order to address this challenge, this paper proposes an anomaly detection technique for IICSs based on deep learning models that can learn and validate using information collected from TCP/IP packets. It includes a consecutive training process executed using a deep auto-encoder and deep feedforward neural network architecture which is evaluated using two well-known network datasets, namely, the NSL-KDD and UNSW-NB15. As the experimental results demonstrate that this technique can achieve a higher detection rate and lower false positive rate than eight recently developed techniques, it could be implemented in real IICS environments.
Heart failure (HF) is associated with skeletal muscle wasting and exercise intolerance. This study aimed to evaluate the exercise-induced clinical response and histological alterations. One hundred ...and forty-four HF patients were enrolled. The individual training program was determined as a workload at or close to the lactate threshold (LT1); clinical data were collected before and after 12 weeks/6 months of training. The muscle biopsies from eight patients were taken before and after 12 weeks of training: histology analysis was used to evaluate muscle morphology. Most of the patients demonstrated a positive response after 12 weeks of the physical rehabilitation program in one or several parameters tested, and 30% of those showed improvement in all four of the following parameters: oxygen uptake (VO2) peak, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), exercise tolerance (ET), and quality of life (QOL); the walking speed at LT1 after six months of training showed a significant rise. Along with clinical response, the histological analysis detected a small but significant decrease in both fiber and endomysium thickness after the exercise training course indicating the stabilization of muscle mechanotransduction system. Together, our data show that the beneficial effect of personalized exercise therapy in HF patients depends, at least in part, on the improvement in skeletal muscle physiological and biochemical performance.
